Another Broken Egg Cafe (Boca Raton)

image

* Another Broken Egg Café, 508 Via de Palmas, Boca Raton, Florida 33432, (561) 405-6940.

Way back on May 30, 2014 Jeff Eats told you guys about-Another Broken Egg Café- a new “breakfast-lunch” restaurant that was getting ready to open in Boca Raton. A copy of that “story” is printed down-below.

This morning…Jeff Eats received an email from Another Broken Egg Cafe’s PR-firm describing 3-pre-opening charity events for its new Boca Raton restaurant. That email is also printed below.

In a nutshell, on June 5th (9am-11am), June 6th (10am-1pm), June 7th (9am-1pm)…the public (that’s you guys) are invited to eat FREE. You have to call (561) 405-6940 to make a reservation. In return for the free-food, Another Broken Egg Café is hoping that you’ll make a donation to the designated charity–but nothing is mandatory.

In his day, Jeff Eats has been to his fair share of “Family & Friends” and pre-opening events…To be perfectly honest with you, I think that this 3-day charity “thing” is brilliant. In effect, Another Broken Egg Café gets to “dry run” its new Boca Raton joint- raise some bucks for three local charities- and generate a ton of local publicity all in one fell swoop. I LOVE IT! A real nice “variation on the old “Family & Friends” theme.

By the way, the Grand Opening is set for Monday, June 9th.

Just so you know, Jeff Eats will be there on Saturday, June 7th for breakfast!

Real quick story…

Jeff Eats has a good buddy who lives in Winter Park, Florida.

The other day, he told me about- a breakfast-lunch chain-Another Broken Egg Café that had recently opened in Winter Park. To say that he raved about his breakfasts/lunches- would be an understatement.

To be perfectly honest with you, before my buddy’s “heads-up” Jeff Eats had never heard of Another Broken Egg Café.

Anyway,

Jeff Eats’ “research” turned-up that Another Broken Egg Café currently has 9 Florida locations (34 total) with huge Florida and national expansion plans in the works. For our “immediate”-purposes, sometime in the next 2-weeks- Another Broken Egg Café is set to open in Boca Raton. Check www.anotherbrokeneggcafe.com for menu/prices-locations.

Like I said before, Jeff Eats hasn’t been to Another Broken Egg Café…that said, I got plans to check-out the Boca Raton joint–when it’s up and running. For what it’s worth, Another Broken Egg Cafe’s website/Facebook page have some absolutely dynamite “food” pictures- if the actual food tastes just-half-as good as those photos, this chain may really have something cooking (pun intended).

Just thought that you guys would like to know about a new joint–headed for Boca Raton.

One other piece of business, the Boca location plans to be open 7 days a week from 7am-2pm

***** Topper’s Creamery, University of Central Florida–4000 Central Florida Boulevard, Orlando, Florida 32816, (407) 823-6700.

Topper’s Creamery…a small “soft serve” ice cream chain…currently has 7 Florida locations.

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats recently tried the Topper’s location on the UCF campus-in Orlando…

I gotta tell you–Topper’s is a terrific ice cream joint.

I’m gonna let you check www.topperscreamery.com for menu/photos/other info.

Jeff Eats “tried” a vanilla bean with hot fudge waffle cone—delicious. Mrs. Jeff Eats “tried” a cup of strawberry topped with chocolate sprinkles/waffle pieces—delicious.

When you check Topper’s website, you are going to find a fabulous selection of soft serve flavors/toppings, shakes and other ice cream stuff. Like I said a few seconds ago, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “did” the Topper’s on the UCF campus. Now I don’t know about you, but when I went to college (Ithaca College 1966-1970) the only campus “food” option offered- was a cafeteria style deal–provided by Saga Foods. Trust me, Saga’s food-dessert offerings didn’t taste or look anything like those- now being offered by Topper’s.

To be perfectly honest with you, until the UCF-outing Jeff Eats hadn’t heard of Topper’s Creamery.

The folks that own/operate this chain know exactly what they are doing…they have successfully brought soft serve ice cream into the 21st century–terrific products, great looking locations (all 7 stores have different sq. foot configurations), super pleasant employees, price points in-line with national-players like Carvel and Dairy Queen.

Jeff Eats loved and I do mean loved Topper’s.

Topper’s Creamery is open Monday-Friday noon-10pm, Saturday noon-6pm, closed on Sunday.

Fork & Balls (Fort Lauderdale)

* Fork & Balls, 1301 East Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301, (954) 771-2257.

Got a heads-up for you guys…sometime in the next 2-3 weeks a joint name Fork & Balls is set to open on East Las Olas Boulevard.

Fork & Balls is the brainchild of-The Restaurant People Inc.–that currently owns and operates YOLO (Fort Lauderdale), Tarpon Bend (Coral Gables) and Sun-Surf-Sand (better known as S3 in Fort Lauderdale).

Here’s the skinny,

Last night Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats ate dinner at YOLO. If you check, I did a story on YOLO on February 7, 2009…suffice it to say, back then Jeff Eats loved the food etc., singling out its MEATBALLS–for special praise. Anyway, last night’s meal was right on the money–and the meatballs were once again dynamite. To make a long story short, talking with YOLO’s folks- I learned that The Restaurant People Inc. is getting ready to open Fork & Balls…an Italian joint which “plays” to the meatball crowd–all kinds of meatballs (beef, chicken, vegetable, turkey, lamb) partnered up with all types of pastas-vegetables-sauces-sliders-sandwiches…with loads of beers and wines on tap.

Now here’s, my thinking on Fork & Balls–this restaurant could prove to be a huge winner.

The logic,
YOLO kills.
Buddies in the “biz” told me that-Tarpon Bend and S3 also kill.
Apparently -The Restaurant People Inc. know exactly how to create/operate successful restaurants.
YOLO’s meatballs kill.

Now, I could be dead wrong on this call, but from what I see, hear, read, tasted–I think that Fork & Balls is gonna kill (I know, enough with the “kill” stuff).

So there’s your heads-up.

Finally, Jeff Eats plans to “try” Fork & Balls and we’ll see if the proof is in the pudding–I mean sauce!-or for you “purists” out there, gravy!

I know that some of you guys don’t like to strain yourselves, so the original YOLO story is reprinted below.
*****

***** YOLO, 333 East Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301 (954)523-1000.

Last night I caught comedian, Jackie Mason’s show at the Broward Center. The next time he “comes around” don’t make the same mistake. Oh Jackie…time to retire. Anyway…before the show, had dinner at a relatively new ( 4 months old) “American Style” restaurant named YOLO…which is short-hand for You Only Live Once.

At this juncture let me send you to YOLO’s website www.yolorestaurant.com for menu/photos/details.

Got to this joint at 6:10pm and its inside & outside bars were PACKED…great looking-stylish 25-35 crowd. So if you are 25-35, you now know about Fort Lauderdale’s latest hot-spot.

Now for the rest of us, let’s talk FOOD (all of a sudden, I’m writing like Jackie Mason talks)…In addition to a couple of “specials” the menu consisted of 5-appetizers, 5-salads, 5-sandwiches, 10-entrees and 5-desserts. My “taste-test” consisted of meatball sliders, California spinach salad, beef tenderloin, rotisserie chicken and bbq pork ribs…I will tell you, that the ribs were some of the best that I have eaten “down-here” in South Florida and if the meatball sliders weren’t 4 bucks a pop, I could have eaten 6 of them…they were absolutely dynamite. The California spinach salad was delicious… large enough for 2. The rotisserie chicken and beef tenderloin were good, but not in the same league as those ribs or sliders. By the way, the entrees came with 2-sides…I had mashed potatoes and cole-slaw, they were just fine.

If you check this joint’s website, you will find photos…so you’ll know that this is a real-sharp…modern-decor joint. Personally, I found the lighting a bit too dark…but the super-modern bathrooms are gorgeous.

Let’s wrap this one up. Great looking joint. Very good food. Very good service. Price-point…Appetizers $6-$11…Salads $8-16…Sandwiches $11.50-$17.50…Entrees $16-30…Sides $4…Desserts $7.

YOLO does lunch and dinner 7-days a week.

I really enjoyed this joint. On this particular Friday Night it had “great energy” and very good food. Oh, to be 25-35 again!!!!

* Otis Cadillac & The El Dorados R&B Revue featuring the Seville Sisters.

Way back on February 26, 2014 I told you guys about Otis Cadillac.

That story is reprinted below. I just wanted you to know- that the band will be appearing on Saturday Night-June 7, 2014 at 9pm at Rip’s Sports Bar & Grill (Diamond Strike Lanes) 2200 North Federal Highway, Pompano Beach–(954) 941-0968.

If you haven’t seen this 13 piece band–GO SEE THEM AT RIP’S! You will have an absolute blast.

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats and a whole bunch of friends are gonna be there. From what I understand, the last time Otis was at Rip’s–it was SRO. Rip’s management just told me- that a huge crowd is expected and a smart move would be to- get to Rip’s 60 minutes before show-time to insure a seat. By the way, Otis is a complimentary event. Rip’s does have a sports-bar menu/full bar.
*****
Otis Cadillac & The El Dorados R&B Revue featuring the Seville Sisters.

Got something really cool, really campy, really fun, really entertaining… South Florida based—Otis Cadillac & The El Dorados R&B Revue featuring the Seville Sisters.

The group describes itself as…”an 11 piece band -that performs Classic R&B, Root Rock N’ Roll and related Blues oriented material. The band performs in a style that emulates the R&B revues of the late 50s and early 60s. It is the goal of each performance to recreate the atmosphere and energy that gave birth to Rock N’ Roll in that era. The band chooses eclectic and diverse material exposing the talents of its band members.”

Trust Jeff Eats on this one…this band puts on an amazing show.

You can check-out Otis Cadillac & The El Dorados R&B Revue featuring the Seville Sisters at www.theotiscadillacband.com.

Take it for what it is worth…Jeff Eats has seen a “ton” of classic rock/roots rock/blues bands in his day–and this Otis Cadillac- is as good as it gets.

Picture if you can…”The Blues Brothers Band” -”Otis Day & The Knights”- “Bette Midler & The Harlettes all in one package…and you’ll have some idea as to what Otis Cadillac & The El Dorados R&B Revue featuring the Seville Sisters is all about.

Otis Cadillac & The El Dorados R&B Revue featuring the Seville Sisters work bars/clubs/country clubs/condos/festivals all over South Florida.

No fooling around here, this is a must see-band.

Jeff Eats has been to three shows and each-featured a different playlist. The band has 11 core members but every so often 5 Seville Sisters (there are usually 3) help front the band. The beautiful thing about Otis Cadillac & The El Dorados R&B Revue featuring the Seville Sisters is that you never know what quirky stuff will unfold at any given performance. By the way, these “guys” can really play/sing/and dance-and use no tracks-to get the job done.

The band’s next scheduled public appearance…March 23, 2014 at the Waterside Blues Festival in Fort Pierce.

Dick’s Last Resort (Orlando, Panama City)

***** Dick’s Last Resort, 8201 Vineland Avenue (Orlando Premium Outlets), Orlando, Florida 32821, (321) 329-3002.

Dick’s Last Resort is a “small” sports bar chain…it currently has 17 US- locations with 2 Florida joints, namely Orlando and Panama City.

The other day, Jeff Eats and family ate in Dick’s Orlando restaurant.

Amazingly, even Jeff Eats a “wizard with the spoken word” has a hard time describing Dick’s Last Resort.

Full bar, loads of tvs, just passable sports bar food—and waiters/waitresses that- scream at, insult, joke with, harass and annoy customers…

When you check www.dickslastresort.com you’ll find menu/prices/locations/other info on interactive-entertainment.

The best way to wrap this, some folks are gonna love Dick’s and some folks are gonna hate Dick’s. You either go- for sophomoric humor or you don’t.

Personally, Jeff enjoyed the “entertainment” to a point–but the mediocre-cheeseburger/French fries/chicken wings/salads/pulled pork sandwich wouldn’t get me back for a return visit.

The suggestion here-despite my misgivings, give Dick’s Last Resort a shot—the way I see it-a chain with 17 locations just may be doing something right–and just maybe, Jeff Eats isn’t seeing this one “correctly.”–Don’t think so, but just maybe!

***** Burger Monger, 10412 North Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa, Florida 33618, (813) 968-6860.

Got a small-fast food hamburger chain for you…Burger Monger which currently has 3-Florida and 1-Pennsylvania locations. Simple concept, grilled burgers/hot dogs/french fries/handful of salads-desserts/beers. Order at/pickup at counter.

Trust Jeff Eats…you’ve seen this “concept” before give or take a variation here and there. That said, if guys want to build these “upscale” fast food burger joints–Jeff Eats is more than willing to eat in them. You do know, that the day will come-like the video stores/self serve yogurt stores that came before the burger joints-when instead of openings you’ll be hearing about store closings…but until then, Jeff Eats is ready to eat away.

Anyway…

Jeff Eats recently gave the Burger Monger in Tampa a shot. Real simple order, 6oz. hamburger ($6.99), 1/2 lb. French fries ($2.99), chicken burger ($6.99), chocolate shake ($4.99)–like I just said, real simple order and I gotta tell you Burger Monger’s food is real good. Just so you know, Burger Monger has a full-boat of complimentary “toppings” for its burgers which come on a buttered challah or honey wheat bun.

Look! Jeff Eats could try and do a “comparison” ranking for Burger Monger–like, better than Five Guys but not as good as Shake Shack but almost as good as BurgerFi but not as good as Fat Burger, but I’m not! All I can tell you, is that I really enjoyed the food and definitely would eat at Tampa’s Burger Monger again…and as far as Jeff Eats is concerned-that’s a great recommendation.

You can check menu/prices at www.burgermonger.com.

Burger Monger is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-10pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm.

Not trying to be Rex Reed or nothing, but last night Jeff Eats saw the new film -Neighbors-and I gotta tell you-that it was one of the funniest pictures that I’ve seen in years.

The best way to describe -Neighbors…the 1978 classic Animal House- updated to 2014.

If you have a decent sense of humor, I dare you to tell Jeff Eats that you didn’t laugh your-ass off watching this film.

Since Jeff Eats is after-all a food blog at heart–the large popcorn and box of Milk Duds I had were delicious-and the counter folks were as pleasant as could me. Price wise-captive audience prices.

Go see Neighbors!

* Jazziz, 201 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, Florida 33432, (561) 300-0730.

Jazziz in Boca Raton…upscale restaurant-music venue.

Just so you know, Jeff Eats has yet to eat “there” -but has seen a number of terrific local/national bands and music artists on its stage.

A quick heads up, sometimes there are ticketed events/cover charges and other times complimentary music…so be sure to check the joint’s website to see what’s doing on any particular day. I’ll give you Jazziz website at the bottom of this story.

I got upcoming plans to try the-food…

Just a quick observation, as far as Jeff Eats is concerned–the name Jazziz is a bit misleading (maybe “confusing” is a better term). When I hear the name Jazziz, I think JAZZ, like -all the music played there is jazz. But au contraire–Jazziz- entertainment scheduled is as eclectic as it gets. To the point, I seriously doubt that anyone would consider the Jefferson Starship or Sandra Bernhard to be jazz-performers. Same goes for-recent appearances by Grammy winner Christopher Cross or local rockers- Solid Brass with its Chicago like-horn section! Like I said 3 seconds ago, haven’t-yet eaten at Jazziz, but I gotta tell you, this joint is great looking and has a sound/stage setup that makes for some real-nice partying.

In reviewing Jeff Eats’ PR mail, I spotted two really cool acts that are booked at Jazziz…Jefferson Starship (July 28-July 29 2014) and Sandra Bernhard (8/12-8/13 2014) and trust me, you definitely want to see both acts. For what it’s worth, Jeff Eats has seen the latest Starship lineup-and it puts on a dynamite show…I’ve also seen Bernhard’s show and the lady is an absolute trip.

You can check www.jazziz.com for restaurant-menu/entertainment-schedule-tickets.

There is an old Taiwanese saying that “The Early Bird Catches The First Worm”– with that in mind, if you want to see this show(s)- you can catch tickets before most people even know that Bernhard and Airplane (oops-I meant Starship) are coming.

As we get closer to these shows, Jeff Eats will have more to say about Jazziz- lineup.
