Wall’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream (Miami)

*****  Wall’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream, 8075 SW 67th Avenue, Miami, Florida 33143 (305) 740-9830.

Wall’s is literally Ice Cream Heaven…if you don’t like ice cream, then Wall’s is not for you. This free standing 1950’s “looking” take-out joint with its outdoor red/white umbrella-tables features something like 40 different flavors of premium quality home made ice cream.  For sure, its got yogurt and fat free stuff, but ice cream is the king at Wall’s.

Do yourself a favor and check Wall’s website wallsicecreamfl.com and see if you can honestly  tell me (after looking at its menu/photos) that you don’t want to go there RIGHT AWAY.

This a great place. Once again, if you don’t like ice cream Wall’s is not for you.

Wall’s is open 7 days a week.

JB’s on the Beach (Deerfield Beach)

*****  JB’s on the Beach, 300 North Ocean Boulevard, Deerfield, Beach, Florida 33441 (954) 571-5220.

JB’s is located right on the beach in Deerfield Beach…there is inside and out-door dining. This is a “semi-upscale” joint, but you will look just fine in a tee shirt/shorts. Take a look at JB’s website at www.jbsonthebeach.com.  The menu is loaded with appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and entrees. The food is excellent as is the service and your dinner bill will probably run you something like  $7-$10 more a head than your favorite “ale house” tab  does. This is a jumping joint…if you check its entertainment schedule,  a line-up of live bands, singers and djs perform inside/outside most days. There is no cover-charge for the entertainment and some of South Florida’s top party bands like Gypsy Lane work the joint regularly.

JB’s is open 7-days a week for lunch and dinner. This joint is always busy… just so you know, finding parking can sometimes be a real pain for those who don’t want to “go” for the valet charge.

This is one of my favorite “semi-upscale” joints in South Florida.

Don’t miss this one.

The Cove Restaurant & Marina (Deerfield Beach)

*****  The Cove Restaurant & Marina, 1754 SE 3rd Court, Deerfield Beach, Florida (954) 421-9272.

Let’s make this review real simple…take a look at The Cove’s website at www.thecoverestaurant.com. ..review its menu/pricing and all of the photos of the joint. Go ahead, I’ll wait…

Now you tell me one person who wouldn’t enjoy eating in a gorgeous joint like this in a tee shirt/shorts ensemble …personally I can’t name one.

The Cove is located right on the Intracoastal…It has a menu loaded with appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and entrees…trust me on this, everyone will find something to eat at this joint. The food is good…not gourmet stuff, but far superior to the stuff that your local “ale-house” serves. The prices are just fine, maybe a buck or two more than that local-ale-house of yours.

The Cove is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. Just so you know, on the weekends it is usually packed with people eating inside the restaurant and its marina is loaded with other folks eating on their boats.

Like I said before, check The Cove’s website…the photos (didn’t someone once say, “that one photo was worth a 1,000 words” or something like that?) will tell you what this joint is all about.

I love taking out of town friends to The Cove for lunch…its joints like this, that make living in South Florida special.

*****  Hamburger Heaven, 314 South County Road, Palm Beach, Florida 33480 (561) 655-5277.

Hamburger Heaven has been in business since 1945. It’s got booths and a horseshoe shaped counter for seating.

This joint is open Monday-Saturday 7:30 am-8pm. It is closed on Sunday.

This is one of my favorite places for a “nice” greasy cheeseburger/french fries/Coke. Hamburger Heaven has loads of toppings for its burgers…This is also a great place for a diner-type breakfast. For those of you not into the burger scene, this joint also has a full-lineup of salads and sandwiches.

Marcello’s Italian Ristorante (Deerfield Beach)

*****  Marcello’s Italian Ristorante, 718 South Federal Highway, Deerfield Beach, Florida 33441 (954) 427-4909.

Marcello’s is a white-table cloth Italian Restaurant located in Deerfield Beach.  You can check menu/pricing at its website  www.marcellositalianristorante.com. I am not sure how long Marcello’s has been around, but my best guess would be something like 20-25 years.

Marcello’s food is excellent. Over the years, I must have eaten at Marcello’s 10 times and always enjoyed the food/ambiance/and the service. This joint does a great job with all of the usual stuff like veal parmigiana, veal marsala, shrimp scampi, chicken cacciatore…but my favorite is Joe’s Steak which is a 1 1/2 lb  New York Cut Steak broiled and covered in sauteed green peppers-onions-mushrooms. This steak is as good as that found in South Florida’s finest steakhouses.

Marcello’s is open 7 days a week for dinner. As for pricing, a few bucks more than your favorite neighborhood pizzeria joint, but nothing too terrible.

Pellegrino’s Ristorante (Deerfield Beach)

Posted on July 7th, 2008 · Deerfield Beach Italian · 4 Comments »

*****  Pellegrino’s Ristorante, 847 SE 8th Avenue, Deerfield Beach, Florida 33441 (954) 418-0611.

Pellegrino’s Ristorante is a white table cloth-hole in the wall Italian joint located  in a non-descript Deerfield Beach strip shopping center. This is one of the best Italian Restaurants in South Florida, so make sure that your GPS system is working…so that you can find it.

Take a look at Pellegrino’s website at www.pellegrinosrestaurant.com for menu details. Also take a look at the joint’s history and picture gallery. In the “history” you will find that Bobby Pellegrino (Pellegrino’s owner) is a nephew of the owners of Harlem’s world-famous Rao’s Restaurant. Folks who have eaten at Rao’s have told me that the Pellegrino’s and Rao’s food is very similar as is the total dining decor/ambiance. All I can tell you (having never eaten at Rao’s) is that Pellegrino’s sets the right mood, that being that you are eating at a family run NYC Italian joint circa 1950 by having an old juke box playing doo wop records when you enter the joint.

I have eaten in Pellegrino’s exactly 4 times. The food is absolutely terrific… delicious veal chop valdostano, veal parmigiana, shrimp scampi, zuppa  di pesce.

Like I said before, this joint is a hole-in-the-wall, so you are going to need a reservation. As for pricing, this joint ain’t cheap…but “you get what you pay for.”

Pellegrino’s is open Tuesday-Sunday for dinner…closed on Monday.

Bamboo Wok (Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Coconut Creek)

*****  Bamboo Wok, 9181 Glades Road, Boca Raton, Florida  (561) 218-6003…12040 South Jog Road, Boynton Beach, Florida (561) 742-0123…4660 West Hillsboro Boulevard, Coconut Creek, Florida (954) 427-1888.

Bamboo Wok currently has 3 South Florida locations…Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Coconut Creek.

Bamboo Wok is a take-out-only joint.

Bamboo Wok’s food is excellent. The food is as good as your favorite South Florida Chinese take-out…in fact, Bamboo Wok’s food could compete quite nicely with most of  NYC’s Chinese eat-in/take-out joints. A few of my favorite dishes are…boneless bbq spare ribs, pan fried dumplings, moo shu pork, beef with mixed vegetables. Trust me on this, if a Bamboo Wok is in your neighborhood,  after you order food the first time, you will make this your regular take-out Chinese joint.

Check out Bamboo Wok’s website  www.bamboowok.com for menu/pricing details. Bamboo Wok is open 7-days a week.

Orient Palace (Boca Raton)

Posted on July 6th, 2008 · Boca Raton Chinese · 3 Comments »

*****  Orient Palace, 7875 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton, Florida (561) 997-7889.

Go figure…

Orient Palace serves up solid Chinese Food. The joint (located on North Federal Highway) ain’t doing NYC Chinatown quality, but all in all the food is-pretty good. A recent dinner…wonton soup, roast pork fried rice, spare ribs, egg roll, sweet & sour chicken was just fine!.. Orient Palace is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

Now for the “go figure” part of the story…Orient Palace also has a take-out only joint located at 3013 Yamato Road, Boca Raton, Florida (561) 241-9933 which makes food that is borderline inedible and I really mean that.

Go figure…

Mom’s Kitchen (Lake Worth)

*****  Mom’s Kitchen, 7478 Lake Worth Road, Lake Worth, Florida 33467 (561) 964-4931.

Mom’s Kitchen is located in a small free-standing “house” right on Lake Worth Road.  Simply put, this joint is a neighborhood diner that does breakfast-lunch and dinner 7 days a week.

Mom’s interior is rural America, with wooden tables/chairs and counter seating…the walls are adorned with cutsey little Americana signs/pictures.

This joint’s menu isn’t gigantic, but I guarantee that everyone will find something to eat. The food is terrific and the service is as friendly/efficient as can be. The prices are diner prices and there are daily specials that will fit everyone’s budget.

Just so you know, this is a very popular joint, so be prepared to wait on line for Saturday-Sunday breakfasts and dinner most nights.

If more moms cooked this way, we would have less runaways in America.

Try this joint.

Gourmet Deli House (Lake Worth)

Gourmet Deli House, 7117 Lake Worth Road, Lake Worth, Florida 33467 (561) 965-1605.

The Gourmet Deli House has a “big reputation” in South Florida. This New York City “kosher” style deli has been around for years and does breakfast-lunch-dinner 7 days a week. The place is always jammed.

Over the years, I have eaten in this joint maybe 3 times.

The Gourmet Deli House is a perfect example of people confusing quality with quantity/price. This joint’s food is just average…but the portions are large and very reasonably priced.

There really is nothing more to say…other than if you are willing to sacrafice quality for quantity/price, then this joint is for you.

Not one of my favorite places.
