Kim’s Chinese Restaurant (Miami Beach)

*****  Kim’s Chinese Restaurant, 1245 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, Florida 33139 (305) 672-8822.

Got a real good “neighborhood” Chinese Restaurant for you…assuming that you live in Miami Beach…Kim’s Chinese Restaurant.

This joint seats something like 90 and its decor would give South Beach interior decorators real-bad nightmares…ever see the paintings/rugs that guys sell in front of gasoline stations?

Kim’s  which has been around for something like 40 years…serves very good Chinese food. A recent “taste-test” of wonton soup, fried wontons, egg rolls, boneless bbq ribs, sweet and sour chicken, shrimp with lobster sauce, roast pork fried rice and pepper steak…made the grade. You can check Kim’s website www.kimschinese.com for menu/prices.

Kim’s prices are “neighborhood” Chinese joint prices…service is very pleasant. Kim’s is open Monday-Saturday 11:30am-10pm and Sunday 1pm-10pm.

*****  Nick’s 50’s Diner, 1900 Okeechobee Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida 33409 (561) 471-3155.

Nick’s name says it all…50’s diner…well almost, Nick’s has been around something like 25 years, so you do the math.

Anyway…check Nick’s website at www.nicks50diner.com for menu/loads of pictures and you’ll know exactly what this joint is all about.

Nick’s is a great place for a “diner” breakfast or lunch. Nothing fancy…good food-good prices-pleasant wait-staff. The menu is loaded with breakfast-stuff, salads, soups, burgers, sandwiches, meat/seafood/chicken entrees, shakes/malts/ice cream/desserts. My personal favorites, grilled cheese with bacon, chicken fried steak, double cheeseburger and the meatloaf.

If 50’s-diner “look and food” is your bag (it’s mine)…you will really enjoy this joint. Nick’s is open for breakfast-lunch… Monday-Saturday 7am-3pm and Sunday 8am-2pm.

*****  MAO Columbian Fast-Food, 8438 SW 40th Street, Miami, Florida 33231 (305) 551-0506.

I am not sure if I should even tell you guys about this one…MAO Columbian Fast-Food.

Mao is a “hole in the wall” Columbian fast-food/take-out joint…order from the counter…six stools to sit on. Basically there are 3 things to order…hamburgers, hot-dogs, arepas.

I only tried the hamburger…the beef patty in a bun (unless you stop the counter-guy) is topped with ham, french fries, mayo, fried egg, lettuce, some “unknown sauces” and a pineapple sauce. I know it sounds real scary…but once I bit into the thing, it was pretty-good…Now don’t get me wrong, I’m still…a burger-grilled onions-ketchup guy…but I had to try it.

Like I said before, I only tried the burger…but I did see two guys eating hot-dogs that were covered with “God only knows what.”

MAO is not for everyone. By the way, when you eat one of these burgers you should consider wearing a bib…messy, messy, messy.

MAO is open Monday-Thursday noon-1am, Friday-Saturday noon-5am and Sunday 7pm-1am. It is absolutley amazing what lengths I will go through to find joints for you guys.

J. Mark’s Restaurant & Bar (Pompano Beach)

*****  J. Mark’s Restaurant & Bar, 1490 Copans Road, Pompano Beach, Florida 33062, (954) 782-7000.

Last night I had dinner at J. Mark’s which is an “American-Style” joint located in Pompano Beach. Take a look at J. Mark’s website at www.jmarksrestaurant.com for menu/prices/photos…so you will have some idea of what I am yapping about.

 J. Mark’s reminds me of Houston’s which has five South Florida locations (Palm Beach, Boca Raton, North Miami Beach, Coral Gables and Winter Park) in decor/menu…so, if you are a fan of Houston’s or know anything about it, you now have a point of reference to work with. By the way, J. Mark’s menu-prices are far more reasonable than those charged at Houston’s

Now let’s get down to brass tacks…I think that J. Mark’s is an absolutely terrific restaurant. J. Mark’s is a very handsome looking joint, doing the “stone-wood” look… bar area, dining room, out-door patio for dining. This joint is not a sports bar, but there are enough flat screen tvs to keep you updated on your favorite team.  On Saturday nights a small jazz band works the joint.

J. Mark’s menu is loaded with appetizers, salads, pastas, burgers, sandwiches, meat/seafood/chicken entrees and desserts. Now for the taste test…fabulous, no make that sensational mini-cheeseburgers, delicious baby back ribs-roast chicken-orange chicken and grilled tuna steak. The shoe-string french fries were okay, but nothing to write home about. As for service, Clint our waiter was terrific and didn’t miss a beat.

Just so we are straight…over the years, I must have eaten in Houston’s something like 10 times. I consider Houston’s and for that matter The Cheesecake Factory to be the “middle ground” between the “just borderline passable” T.G.I. Friday’s-Applebee’s-Duffy’s-Ale Houses and the “upscale-over priced-pretentious” steak/seafood joints like New York Prime- Morton’s- Ruth’s Cris-Abe & Louie’s.

The bottomline is this…J. Mark’s is a terrific restaurant. It looks upscale, but tee shirts/shorts are just fine…the food is very good, the service is excellent…and the prices are extremely reasonable…appetizers run $7.95-$10.95, salads $8.95-10.95, burgers-sandwiches $8.95-$9.95, entrees $10.95-25.95. By the way, those sensational mini-cheesburgers that I previously mentioned, run $9.95 for 4 with french fries…each burger is topped with cheddar cheese-ketchup-pickles-fried onion ring and they are not to be missed.

You now know about J. Mark’s. Give this joint a try…I really think that you will enjoy this restaurant. By the way, J. Mark’s is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-10pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm.

*****  Mama Jennie’s Italian Restaurant, 11720 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, Florida 33161 (305) 757-3627.

Mama Jennie’s is a “RED SAUCE ITALIAN JOINT.” Mama Jennie’s which has been around since 1973 has a menu that could literally choke a horse…tons of appetizers, soups, salads, pastas, pizzas, subs, meat/seafood/chicken entrees.

Just so you know, a recent “taste test” of chicken parmesan, veal marsala, shrimp scampi and baked lasagna…got a “GOOD” rating on each item.

Are we talking gourmet stuff here?…Now, let’s not be silly. Good food. Large portions. Very reasonable prices. Pleasant wait-staff. Check the joint’s website at www.mamajennies.com for menu/prices.

If you live in Mama Jennie’s neighborhood, you now know about a good eat- in/take-out that is open Monday-Thursday 11:30am-10pm, Friday-Saturday 11:30am-11pm and Sunday 10am-10pm.

Sieng House (Boca Raton)

*****  Sieng House, 1001 SW 2nd Avenue, Boca Raton, Florida 33432 (561) 447-0807.

Strange…very strange…very-very strange…a Chinese restaurant that is CLOSED ON SUNDAY.

Anyway…tried  Sieng House the other day and I have to tell you…that this “no frills” and I do mean “no frills” joint serves some heavy-duty delicious food.

Sieng House is located in a small strip-center in Boca Raton. Maybe there are 8 booths and 4 tables…the kitchen is “out in the open” so you see everything that is going on. This joint’s decor/feel/food… reminded me of several of my NYC Chinatown favorites. I am warning you… Sieng House’s decor makes your neighborhood Chinese restaurant look like the Taj Mahal.

Now for the “test” (this was a party of six)…wonton soup, egg roll, bbq ribs, steamed dumplings, general tso’s chicken, shrimp in lobster sauce, cashew chicken, pepper steak, shrimp chop suey, moo shu pork, pork fried rice…Let me start by saying, that I will definitely be back. The food was very good. There were all kinds of specials and combination plates. The prices were neighborhood Chinese joint prices. The service was “mom & pop” and very pleasant.

Sieng House is one of the better NYC “style” Chinese joints that I have eaten in South Florida. Like I said earlier, Sieng House is closed on Sunday…which seems real-strange to those of us who grew up in the 5-boroughs during the 1950s-60s-70s because (at least in my neighborhood) Sunday night was Chinese Night.

Anyway…I highly recommend this restaurant. By the way, Sieng House which doesn’t use msg, is open Monday-Saturday 11:30am-9pm.

*****  Bella Napoli Pizzeria and Restaurant, 1443 Alton Road, Miami Beach, Florida 33139 (305) 672-1558.

The other day I found an absolutely terrific “Southern Italian Red Sauce” joint…Bella Napoli Pizzeria and Restaurant. The joint is located in a small-strip center and has something like 16 tables.

Bella Napoli’s menu is loaded with appetizers, salads, soups, pizzas, subs, pastas and meat/chicken/seafood entrees. The joint’s prices are neighborhood pizza-joint prices.

Everything in my “taste test” was delicious…fettuccini carbonara, pizza, gnocchi alfredo, veal pizzaiola, shrimp francaise and chicken parmigiana. Nice sized portions, reasonable prices, very pleasant wait-staff.

Now…you know and I know, that there are more “mom & pop” Italian joints in South Florida than there are Chins in a Chinese phonebook…let’s just say, that Bella Napoli Pizzeria is one of the best that I have eaten in.

If you live in Bella Napoli’s neighborhood, you have an absolutely great joint for eat-in and take-out. Bella Napoli is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

*****  Conchy Joe’s Seafood, 3945 NE Indian River Drive, Jensen Beach, Florida 34957 (772) 334-1130.

Got a real good casual-“American” joint for you…I know that that this indoor-outdoor restaurant is called Conchy Joe’s Seafood, but this joint in addition to loads of seafood stuff has enough non-fish appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, chicken/meat entrees, so no-one is going to go hungry. Don’t believe me?… check Conchy’s website at www.conchyjoes.com for menu/prices…by the way, there are also loads of pictures at the site, which will give you some idea of what this joint is all about.

Just so we are straight…we are not talking gourmet seafood or gourmet anything else here…we are talking “SOUTH FLORIDA DINING EXPERIENCE”…tee shirts/shorts…honky-tonk indoor and outdoor deck dining (be smart and sit outside)…decent enough food…large portions… cold sodas and beers…very reasonable prices…easy-going pleasant staff.

Like I said before…Conchy Joe’s Seafood card is… decent food with great ambiance. Unless you are a real stuff shirt, there is no reason why you shouldn’t have a great time eating at this joint. Conchy is open 7 days a week 11:30am-10pm.

*****  Papa Hughie’s Seafood World & Marketplace, 4602 North Federal Highway, Lighthouse, Florida 33064 (954) 942-0740.

Papa Hughie’s is a “real-casual seafood joint” which seats something like 75…in addition to its 20 or so tables, Papa Hughie’s has a seafood market where both fresh and frozen stuff is sold. If you take a look at this joint’s website at www.seafood-world.com you will find menu/prices and photos which will give you some idea as to what this combination restaurant/market looks like.

Just so you know…if you are not a fish/seafood eater, this joint is probably not for you…Papa Hughie’s has exactly 3 things on its menu for you guys…filet mignon, chicken fingers and blackened chicken. On the other hand, seafood-lovers, will be like “pigs in sh@t.”… appetizers, soups, salads, pastas, entrees.

A recent food “sampling” found…delicious crab-cakes, conch fritters, calamari marinara, snapper franciase and fried oysters. Entrees come with a house salad, vegeatble and potato/or rice.

If you like great seafood and enjoy eating it in tee shirts and shorts…you got to try Papa Hughie’s. The joint is open Monday-Saturday 11:30am-10pm and Sunday 3pm-9pm.

*****  Porky’s Last Stand, 701 Bald Eagle, Marco Island, Florida 34145 (239) 394-8727.

On the average, twice a year…me and the family get over to Marco Island. As part of our sojourn, we try and make it our business to have either a lunch or dinner at a terrific bbq-joint named Porky’s Last Stand.

Porky’s is a real casual-moderatley priced restaurant with a menu loaded with appetizers, soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, burgers, bbq, meat/seafood/chicken entrees. In addition to serving some really decent food, Porky’s which has been around since 1992… has a full bar/lounge that has some of Florida’s top bands/musical acts on its stage. Check-out the joint’s website www.porkyslaststand.com for menu/prices/entertainment schedule.

The next time that you visit Marco Island keep Porky’s in mind. Good food…large portions… reasonable prices…terrific waitstaff…and in the evenings, top-shelf entertainment. Porky’s is open 7 days a week from 11am-10pm.
