Real simple tale to tell, Nelson’s Diner is a terrific “mom & pop” breakfast/lunch diner. I absolutely love eating-the joint’s cinnamon raisin French toast- surrounded by “everything” Elvis. Trust Jeff Eats on this one, if you’re into “mom & pop” diners, you will really enjoy Nelson’s. Jeff Eats has eaten a ton of Nelson’s- breakfasts and lunches and each and every time, right on the money!

Thank you very much!

Nelson’s Diner…”mom & pop”- 1950’s-1960’s décor- booth/table/counter seating diner. The joint is open Monday-Friday 6am-3pm, Saturday-Sunday 7am-2:30pm.

Jeff Eats recently did breakfast and really enjoyed the joint. Before I get into the breakfast, I’m thinking that Nelson (or whatever the owner’s name is) must really “love” Elvis Presley…pictures- posters all over the joint. Like I said 1-second ago…. Thank you very much! So if you aren’t into the King, anyway…

You can check Nelson’s menu/prices-at nelsonsdinerpompano.com. For you guys who like things handed to you, loads of breakfast stuff, appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, salads, lunch entrees.

Now, about that breakfast,

Jeff Eats was there on a Tuesday morning around 7:30am and the joint was jammed. Just an eyeball call, but I’m thinking that Nelson’s seats maybe 40…

Jeff Eats’ party of four…ordered- Belgian waffle with bacon ($5.99), country fried steak/2eggs/hash browns/toast ($7.99), biscuits and gravy ($3.99), French toast ($3.99), pancakes (3-$4.69), western omelette/hash browns/toast ($6.79)…and I gotta tell you, Nelson’s makes real good breakfast food. Nothing for nothing, I’ve eaten in my fair share of mom & pop diners and Nelson’s definitely holds its own against the best of them.

Let me wrap this up for you,

You guys know by now, that Jeff Eats is a huge fan of the mom & pop-neighborhood diner “concept”…I really enjoyed Nelson’s Diner. The food was right on the money, the prices were reasonable, the service was pleasant, the décor was “whatever”-and Jeff Eats left Nelson’s Diner knowing that America was built brick by brick by guys like Nelson -or whatever the owner’s name is. By the way, I know, a bit over-dramatic, but hey!- last Tuesday was Veterans Day.

Nelson’s Diner is a winner. If you live or work in Nelson’s neighborhood give it a shot, you won’t be disappointed!

There are songs you hear in your life that transport you to a certain time period or give you a special feeling. You associate those good times to the group that made them famous. Songs like “I’d Really Love To See You Tonight,” “Nights Are Forever Without You” and “Love Is The Answer” have that kind of effect on people. Those songs and numerous others have made John Ford Coley a singing legend. He has spent decades touring, writing, recording, and producing. John is most revered as half of the Grammy nominated duo England Dan and John Ford Coley. He continues with an active roster performing the platinum and gold record hits for audiences around the world. Classically trained on piano and an avid guitarist, John loves the craft and enjoys every audience he encounters.
With double platinum and gold records behind him, John has also produced other artists. Most recently, he co-produced several sides on Eddie Money. Country musician, Vince Gill added vocals along with John to give the sessions a country feel. Additionally, John has produced CD’s on Country Artist Tom Wurth and another talent, Lynn Bryant. Of late, John recorded a live album while he was on tour in the Philippines with many of the hits. It is available on the internet, and at concerts. John is currently going into the studio to record new material for an acoustic album. Some of John Ford Coley’s hits are as follows: “Love Is The Answer”, “Gone Too Far”, “I’d Really Love To See You Tonight”, “We’ll Never Have To Say Goodbye Again”, “Nights Are Forever Without You”, “Soldier In The Rain”, “Come Back To Me”, “Sad To Belong”, “Simone”, “Westward Wind”, “Part of Me, Part of You.” Some of John’s songs have appeared in feature films such as “Nights are Forever Without You” in “Dickie Roberts Former Child Star”. Another hit “I’d Really Love To See You Tonight” appeared in the film “Long Kiss Goodnight” with Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson. Over the years John has shared the stage with many of the music industry’s famous hit makers. Some of those include: Elton John, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Chicago, Carole King, Bread, Loggins and Messina, Led Zepplin, Carly Simon, Bill Cosby, Steve Miller Band, Randy Bachman, Jesse Colin Young, Air Supply, Ambrosia, Poco, Terry Sylvester (formerly of the Hollies), Orleans, Lou Gramm and Gordon Lightfoot, to name a few. John’s television exposure crosses all demographic boundaries. He’s hosted “The Midnight Special” and co-hosted “The Mike Douglas Show”. He’s appeared on “The Tonight Show”, “Merv Griffin”, “David Soul and Friends”, “Dinah”, “American Bandstand”, “Hollywood Squares” (A Special Rock Edition), “Make Me Laugh”, “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert”, “Prime Time Country”, and the “Trinity Broadcasting Network.” Some of John’s Television and Movie Theme Songs written or performed include: “Just Tell Me pYou Love Me”, “Dr. Pepper”, “Major League, Back To The Minors”, “James At 16”, “Joe Panther”, “The Spy Within” “Cold Case” and “Maxwell House Coffee” with Paul Newman in Japan.
In the mid-1980’s, John entered acting. In “Dream A Little Dream”, Coley performed as the boyfriend of actress Susan Blakely. In this role he enjoyed playing an antagonist and pushing teen Corie Feldman down some stairs and spiking Feldman’s girlfriend’s wine to keep her from sneaking out. Previously, in his first acting role in “Scenes From The Gold Mine”, Coley played a drummer alongside Eagles Timothy B. Schmidt. The film also featured Joe Pantoliano (The Sopranos). In another film “Aces and Eights”, John played in a deadly 1870’s poker game against Steve Railsback and Doug McClure. Most rewarding though was an episode of “America’s Most Wanted”. Here, John played a drug dealer who was killed by his partner. In this re-enactment, the capture of John’s character’s real-life killer was among the fastest captured in the show’s history. 2 John’s experiences stem from a broad background, since he is very eclectic in his interests. Although John performed throughout high school and college as a classical and rock pianist, he chose to major in English Literature in his university studies and is an avid student of history. In between the extensive road duty, John lives in the Nashville area with his family, where he’s penned a book on his years in the music industry entitled “Backstage Pass”, and is writing another book about his spiritual journey back from another religion to Christianity. He also speaks in churches about his experiences

***** Kingsburg Asian Cuisine, 9819 South Military Trail, Boynton Beach, Florida 33436, (561) 734-8255.

Got a real good Chinese joint for you…Kingsburg Asian Cuisine in Boynton Beach. Don’t let the “Asian Cuisine” in the joint’s name throw you off, Kingsburg is a Chinese restaurant- with a pretty good handful of Korean, Vietnamese and Thai dishes thrown into the menu-mix!

The other night, Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple ate dinner at Kingsburg…not exactly sure as to how long Kingsburg been around- but when I squinted (no insult or pun intended) my eyes, I’m thinking that I could have been sitting in a Brooklyn Chinese Restaurant in 1957…loads of booths, big round tables for about 100!

image

Dishes ordered:
Wonton Soup
Hot & Sour Soup
Fried Pork Dumplings
BBQ Spare Ribs
Egg Rolls
Roast Pork Fried Rice
General Tso’s Chicken
Shrimp With Lobster Sauce
Mu Shu Pork
Shrimp Lo Mein
Pepper Steak

…and I gotta tell you, everything was right on the money! Now I could- break things down for you, by telling you that Jeff Eats has had better Egg Rolls and Pepper Steak…and that I really enjoyed the General Tso’s Chicken and Shrimp Lo Mein- but you guys know that this food-reviewing business is purely a subjective game, what I like, you may hate and vice versa!-so let’s leave it at, I would definitely eat at Kingsburg again- because all four of us (in case you forgot- Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple)-all agreed that the food worked, the prices were reasonable, the portions were huge, the service was pleasant and the décor when we squinted our eyes (no pun or insult intended) made us feel like we were back in a Brooklyn Chinese restaurant in 1957!

You can check menu/prices at kingsurgfl.com.

Kingsburg Asian Cuisine is open Monday-Saturday 11am-10pm, Sunday 11am-9:30pm (I guess “they” want to get home in time to watch The Good Wife).

Call it crazy, but at least once a week -Jeff Eats gets asked among other things-to name his favorite south Florida Italian/pizza joints…very flattering -to think that so many of you guys actually believe that I know what I am talking about…

Anyway…

Way back on June 28, 2010- Jeff Eats “reviewed” Barone’s La Pizzeria…and I gotta tell you, that over the ensuing years, Barone’s has become one of Jeff Eats’ “go to joints.” Personally, I would match Barone’s food/prices/service up-against the best “mom & pop” red sauce players in South Florida.

So…you now know where Jeff Eats goes when he is craving -outstanding New York Style pizza, amazing garlic knots, fabulous minestrone soup, delicious veal marsala—so forth and so on.

One final thought…Barone’s has been around for something like 40 years…that should tell you something!

The original (6/28/10) review is reprinted below.

***** Barone’s La Pizzeria, 5632 West Sample Road, Margate, Florida 33073 (954) 968-4396.
Barone’s La Pizzeria is a “Mom & Pop—red sauce” pizza joint located in Margate.
You can check its menu/prices at www.lapizzeriamargate.com.

You know and I know that “Mom & Pop” pizza joints are a dime a dozen-down here in old South Florida. I think the way it works…the strip center landlord first signs Publix, then Walgreens, then a Chinese takeout, then a pizza joint, then a dry cleaners…then a —-(you fill in the blanks)….then half of the businesses go bust…

Anyway, the other evening, I gave Barone’s La Pizzeria a shot- and I gotta tell you, the food is real-good. My party did pizza, shrimp scampi, veal parmigiana, meat lasagna, chicken & shrimp alfredo, penne ala vodka—and like I just said, real good.

As you know– over the past few years, old Jeff Eats has eaten-in his fair share of “mom & pop” Italian joints…and, to be perfectly honest with you, most of them barely get the job done, but then again, that’s the nature of the beast…”cheap is cheap”….”you get what you pay for”…”one if by land, 2 if by sea.” Trust me on this one, Barone’s La Pizzeria is REAL GOOD…if you live or work near the joint, I highly recommend that you give it a try.

By the way, Barone’s La Pizzeria is right across Sample Road from the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek and is maybe a 3-minute drive (west) from the Festival Flea Market on Sample Road.

Barone’s La Pizzeria is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-10pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm

Little River Band

Little River Band was the first Australian band to successfully conquer foreign markets from an Australian base. Within eight months of their birth, LRB had already scored three Australian Top 20 singles and two Top Ten albums. In 1976, after their self-titled debut album was released in the USA, the long grind of 13 US tours in eight years had begun.

From Portland to Fort Lauderdale and New York to LA, fans of the band are treated to an entertaining mix of classic songs and new material, delivered as always with that trademark blend of impeccable vocals, soaring harmonies, kick-ass playing and the unmistakable feeling of a band really enjoying itself.

2015 marks the band’s 40th Anniversary, keeping alive the enduring appeal of recognizable and powerful classics, as well fresh new rock/country crossover hits.

Ambrosia

Exploring the possibilities of progressive classical and world influences, yet rooted with the soul of the blues and R&B, Joseph Puerta, Christopher North, David Pack, and Burleigh Drummond created a new sound that was defined and recognized as Ambrosia. In its brief recording history, Ambrosia garnered 5 Grammy Nominations, 5 Top 20 singles, heavy FM airplay, and the admiration and respect of the musical community. All this is in addition to several sold out concerts around the world.

Today the band is more alive than ever. The band recently rocked the The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon show with accolades from Jimmy himself and has shown its musical versatility with the ability to play a prog set of music with Yes and Genesis or glide into their pop hits “How Much I Feel and Biggest Part of Me” with a romantic soul.

Player

In January 1978, Player had an international number one hit with their first single: “Baby Come Back”, which was co-written and sung by Beckett. The self-titled album went platinum and the band toured extensively. Four albums followed rendering four more top forty singles, including “This Time I’m In It For Love”, which reached number ten on Billboard’s chart. Player started performing again in the year 2003, always featuring an all star line-up, which has included at various times members of The Cars, REO SpeedWagon, Foreigner and Little River Band.

Band member Peter Beckett has written hit songs for many artists including: Heart, Olivia Newton-John, Kenny Rodgers, The Temptations, Poco, Janet Jackson, The Commodores, Cliff Richards, Survivor, Grace Slick, and more recently Vanessa Hudgens of “High School Musical” fame.

Between the years 1989-1997, Peter was a featured member of The Little River Band and has written several singles for them. Peter and Ronn were part of Sail Rock 2013 and toured the country with Christopher Cross, Orleans, Firefall and many other great musicians. In 2014, the entire band toured Australia and appeared on national TV shows like General Hospital and Home and Family.

First told you guys about Randazzo’s on September 11, 2008. Jeff Eats doesn’t get to eat at Randazzo’s as much as I would like (Boca Raton where I live-to Coral Gables is a “nice” drive”)- that said, every time I’ve eaten there, I’ve been totally blown away by its food and service!

Long story short, last night Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple “did” dinner- and once again, the joint’s food was delicious and its service as pleasant- professional as can be!

Trust Jeff Eats on this one, you guys gotta try this joint- it’s terrific!

Got a terrific Italian Restaurant for you to try…Randazzo’s Little Italy. In addition to having delicious food…efficient wait-staff…large portions…reasonable prices…Randazzo’s has an owner who if you piss him off, could actually knock you out…the joint is owned/operated by former cruiser-weight boxing champion Marc Randazzo.

The best way to describe Randazzo’s decor-ambiance is ADRIAN’S…let me explain. Rent yourself a copy of Sylvester Stallone’s latest Rocky film, “Rocky Balboa”…in the film, Rocky is a retired boxer who owns/operates a restaurant named after his late wife, Adrian…Rocky’s joint is decorated with a combination of stuff which includes boxing memorabilia and Rocky walks around the joint “schmoozing” the clientele. Randazzo’s which has a red/white table cloth setup, is decorated with all kinds of photos of “this and that” and boxing memorabilia… it is owned/operated by a retired boxing champion, who likes to “schmooze”…sound familiar?

Anyway…this is a terrific place. It has limited seating and the two times that I ate dinner there, it was jammed with “tons” of folks waiting for tables. This joint has all of the usual dishes and many portions are enough to feed two or more…ask the server when ordering…no need to over-order/over-spend. By the way, if you don’t like the food, keep it to yourself, as Marc had one of the best left-hands in his divsion.

Randazzo’s is open for lunch Monday-Friday 11:30am-2:30pm, Monday-Saturday for dinner, closed on Sunday.

You can check menu/prices at randazzoslittleitaly.com.
