Got something a-little different for you guys, Peter Fogel’s one man show- ‘Til Death Do Us Part…You First!

In a nutshell, last night at the Boca Black Box (8221 Glades Road, Boca Raton, (561) 483-9036, bocablackbox.com) – Peter Fogel the national headliner comedian and current national touring star of “My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m In Therapy” had a “read through” of his new national touring show ‘Til Death Do Us Part…something like 50 people were there- to listen/watch and critique the upcoming production.

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats were there and I gotta tell you- Fogel had the crowd laughing its ass off for a solid 90 minutes! Trust Jeff Eats, this show is going be a huge hit when it starts making the rounds of casinos, conventions, theaters all across America!

For those of you not familiar with Peter Fogel, the Delray Beach resident is one of the funniest clean-comedians currently working the comedy club/convention circuit today! Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have been Fogel fans for years and last night for the first time it dawned on Jeff Eats that Fogel does one of the best Robert De Niro impersonations on the planet!

Anyway, not going to give away the show’s plot- but think “Scrooge” in a Valentine’s Day setting and you just maybe on the right page!

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats can’t wait to see the “full production”- which will debut in South Florida sometime in April, 2016. When a performance schedule is released, Jeff Eats will let you know the where/when and how you can get tickets before anyone else does!

* Singer Bill Medley and Comedian Stewie Stone.

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats saw Medley earlier this year…The legendary Rock N’ Roller put on a terrific show! For sure- Bobby Hatfield is missed, but trust Jeff Eats when I tell you, Medley’s show absolutely kills!

Go see him!

Medley is in for 1- show on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 7:30pm.

The really great kicker to this show, is that comedian Stewie Stone is the opener- you wanna talk “clean” very funny, then talk Stewie Stone. Jeff Eats has seen Stone something like 5-times and like I just said, the guy is hilarious!

Bring back that lovin’ feelin with legendary crooner Bill Medley, better known as one half of the Righteous Brothers. Medley’s distinct baritone combined with Bobby Hatfield’s tenor and Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” production on hits like “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin,'” “Just Once in My Life,” “Unchained Melody” and “(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration.” In 1987, Medley and Jennifer Warnes scored a monumental hit with “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” for the film Dirty Dancing. The song earned an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Grammy. For his show at the Countess de Hornie Theatre, Medley will be sharing the stage with Friar’s Club comedian Stewie Stone.

***** Al’s Pizza and Restaurant, 905 US Highway 1, Lake Park, Florida 33403, (561) 855-7471.

Got an absolutely terrific “mom & pop” Italian red sauce joint for you guys, Al’s Pizza and Restaurant in Lake Park.

Gonna make this tale short and sweet, Al’s Pizza and Restaurant is one of the best “mom & pop” Italian red sauce joints that Jeff Eats has eaten in- here in South Florida!

If you’re looking for fancy schmancy, Al’s ain’t gonna work for you! On the other hand, if you’re looking for dynamite food, reasonable prices, huge portions, super pleasant service, this joint is exactly what the opthomologist ordered!

image

The skinny…

First things first, AL’s Pizza and Restaurant is located in the “obligatory” bombed-out el crapo strip center!

Last night Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple ate dinner at Al’s. Our order- 16″ cheese pizza, veal parmigiana, shrimp fra diavolo, chicken with broccoli/garlic & oil, veal marsala- all of the entrees came with soup/or house salad, garlic rolls, pasta side. Trust me on this one, “mom & pop” Italian red sauce dynamite delicious! For those of you who like “pecking orders” a virtual tie- every entree was just-right! The pizza, thin crust/sweet sauce/drop of oil drip when pointed down- was also right on the money!

By the way, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats thought that the food was so-good, that we also did a takeout order- sausage & peppers sub, meat lasagna, penne ala vodka, cheese steak with mushrooms/peppers/onions sub for Son Jeff Eats and Daughter Jeff Eats who were at home visiting with us for a few days!- that of course is a story for a whole ‘nother time! At home, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats were “allowed” tastes- and everything was again, right on the money delicious!

Like I said a few seconds ago, Al’s Pizza and Restaurant is a terrific joint. If you live or work anywhere near it, try it- you’ll love it!-that’s of course assuming that your “taste” matches up with mine!

You can check menu/prices/info at alspizzawpb.com

Al’s Pizza and restaurant is open Monday-Thursday 11am-9pm, Friday-Sunday 11am-10pm.

Jeff Eats saw Buddy- The Buddy Holly Story twice on Broadway…great show!

The Pompano Beach Amphitheater just announced that…Buddy- The Buddy Holly Story is in for 1- performance on Tuesday Night, February 9, 2016!

Trust Jeff Eats on this one, you wanna see this one!

Just a little something for you guys…Don Mclean’s 1971 hit song “American Pie” is in part about the – 23 year old Holly’s death in an airplane crash on February 3, 1959.

Between you guys and Jeff Eats, every so often I wonder what the careers of Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) who both died in the crash with Holly- would have been like had the crash never happened! One other thing, The Beatles in part- got the idea for their The Beatles- from Buddy Holly’s group’s name The Crickets!

Like I said before, you definitely wanna see this show!

***** Big Bite Bagel & Deli, 5369 Lyons Road, Coconut Creek, Florida 33073, (954) 418-7100.

Got a real good bagel-deli joint for you guys, Big Bite Bagel & Deli in Coconut Creek. For your file, delicious food, hefty portions, booth/table seating, reasonable prices, very pleasant-competent service. Big Bite is open 7 days week 6:30am- 3pm. Menu/prices/info bigbitebagelanddeli.com.

Now, you guys know or should know that over the years, Jeff Eats has eaten in his fair share of South Florida bagel-deli joints – running the gamut from dynamite to pump my stomach!

With the above in mind, I’m gonna make this tale real sweet and simple, Big Bite Bagel & Deli is right up there with the best bagel-delis that I’ve eaten in/taken out from in South Florida. A recent outing had Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats eating in- western omelette, sausage/American cheese/scrambled egg sesame bagel sandwich, French toast…and taking out- 1/2 lb of tuna salad, 1/2 lb of chicken salad, 1/2 lb whitefish, 1/2 lb of pastrami, 1/2 lb of corned beef, 2 potato knishes, 2 kasha knishes, 1/2 dozen mixed bagels and I gotta tell you, everything was right on the bagel-deli money!

Like I said 3 seconds ago, Big Bite Bagel & Deli is right up there with the best bagel-delis that Jeff Eats has eaten in/taken out from in South Florida! Trust me on this one, if you live or work in Big Bite’s neighborhood, you wanna eat its stuff!

Latest Review: 8/1/2012

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats the 1st Street Deli makes an absolutely terrific-Matzo Ball Soup. If you don’t tell too many people, during the past 3 years- on average- Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats ate at the 1st Street Deli something like every 6 weeks or so- and everything that we ordered (i.e.- hamburgers, hot dogs pastrami, corned beef, turkey, potato pancakes, chopped liver, tuna salad, chicken salad) was right on the money! The 1st Street Deli is a great looking joint and its service is as pleasant and competent as can be!

By the way when Jeff Eats first ‘reviewed” the joint back on 8/1/12 there was an- Original Brooklyn Water Bagel outlet in the restaurant…that’s no more, the 1st Avenue Deli now has its own (bagels made in house) operation in that space!- Just in case you’re wondering, the bagels that Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have tried- (everything, plain, onion, sesame) were as good, if not better than the stuff being turned out by most of the bagel joints that dot South Florida’s landscape!

1st Street Deli is open:
Breakfast
Monday – Sunday: 6:30AM – 11AM | Featuring hot, fresh donuts with every dine-in entrée.

Lunch & Dinner

*****1st Street Deli, 5550 Northwest 40th Street, Coconut Creek, Florida 33073, (954) 977-6700.

The 1st Street Deli is located inside the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek in Coconut Creek. Great looking joint, with table/booth/counter seating…looks like a NYC “kosher style” deli circa 1960…in addition, part of the “store” has an- The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Company outlet (check Jeff Eats 8/11/09 review for Delray Beach location).

Just so you know, Jeff Eats always treats casino “restaurants” with a jaundiced eye…is the food any good? are the prices outrageous? is this just a tourist trap?

Got some good news for you on 1st Street Deli…

Tried 1st Street Deli the other night for dinner…matzo ball soup (bowl-$4.95), potato pancake appetizer (3 pancakes $5.95), pastrami on rye (with french fries $12.95), salad trio (1-scoop each of chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad-$10.95), 8oz cheeseburger with french fries $11.95)—everything was A-OK! As a point of reference, I know a lot of you guys eat in Too Jay’s Gourmet Deli…the food at 1st Street Deli is better than Too Jay’s stuff (see Jeff Eats’ Too Jay’s review 3/28/09)…as a matter of fact, 1st Street Deli’s food is as good as the stuff served at most of the better bagel joints and New York Kosher Style Delis down here in sunny South Florida. For the record, although very good, 1st Street Deli’s food isn’t quite in the same league (although not by much) as TOP delis like the Pomperdale, Zinger’s or Ben’s (if you like, you can check Jeff Eats’ reviews for these 3 joints, if not, not!) On the pricing front, maybe a “drop” higher here and there-than your favorite bagel joint, but nothing that’s glaring…besides, if you spend the money on food, you won’t have to waste time “losing” it playing the slots—in any event, the Indians are gonna get the cash no matter how you slice it.

Check www.seminolecoconutcreekcasino.com for menu/prices.

One final thought, if you checked my review on The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Company you’d know that it makes some real-good bagels. That said, I think that a bakers dozen at the Casino’s location fetches something like 14 bucks—now that’s a rip-off. One other thing on The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Company, the casino’s website says that the “bagel” store is open from 6am-11pm–but when I was there at 9:30pm it “appeared” to be closed and its bagel display bins were totally empty…not good!

1st Street Deli is open 7 days a week 11am-11pm.
The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Company is open 7 days a week 6am-11pm.

Over the past 5 years or so Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have eaten at Paolo’s 3’s Company Italian Restaurant & Lounge something like 8-times (with last night being the most recent) and each and every time, I/we could’ve sworn that Henry Hill, Tommy DeVito and their buddies would be walking in at any minute! Great food, not exactly- Great service, not exactly, but we really enjoy this joint! Not sure as to the exact allure…but the 1950’s- 1960’s Italian gangster/Rat Pack décor-vibe-wait service, nightly “live oldies” music (Rat Pack, Doo Wop, Elvis, Darin), celebrity sightings like Jake “The Raging Bull LaMotta (I know, you thought he was dead!), separate dance floor, outdoor dining/smoking patio, separate bar area, decent enough food (think- your average “mom & pop” red sauce Italian joint with surprisingly dynamite garlic bread and you’ll be on the right page) and service – make this joint a “one of a kind.”

image

Like I said 2 seconds ago, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats really enjoy Paolo’s 3’s Company. Just so we are straight with each other, if you’re into EDM (Electric Dance Music) Jeff Eats is kinda-thinking (actually I know) that this joint ain’t gonna work for you! Now on the other-hand, if you’re looking for a Marty McFly type “outing”- I am telling you, you will really enjoy Paolo’s 3’s Company Italian Restaurant & Lounge!

Paolo’s 3’s Company is open Sunday-Thursday 4pm-10pm, Friday-Saturday 4pm-11pm.
