Last night, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats and a couple of friends gave “American-Style” Madisons New York Grill & Bar in Boca Raton a shot–and I gotta tell you, the joint literally blew our socks-off. No fooling around here…Madisons food and service were terrific!

Real quick, Madisons is a Canadian based restaurant chain that currently owns/operates 14 restaurants in Quebec, 1 in Boca Raton and has 1- under construction in Pompano Beach. If you think–Houston’s, J. Mark’s and J. Alexander’s you’ll be on the right décor page. The Boca Raton joint opened about 1-week ago, in a completely renovated building that at one time or another housed California Pizza Kitchen, Wolfie Cohen’s Rascal House, Copper Canyon Grill and Stephane’s Steak & Seafood. The restaurant has both indoor/outdoor patio seating and a separate full-bar area with something like 9 flat screen tvs.

As I mentioned 16 seconds ago, Madisons’ food and service were terrific…no ifs or buts, but the guys who own Madisons-know how to run a restaurant. Every dish that hit our table was exactly as ordered, glasses were continuously refreshed by Dave “The” Waiter-and during the evening we were “visited” by GM-Charles, Front Of The House Manager-Juan and Owner-Steve. Just so you know, Jeff Eats’ eagle eye caught- that every table in our section got the exact-same management treatment.

Let’s talk food…

Real simple menu–8 appetizers ($8-17), 6 meal salads ($15-$20), 5 sandwiches/burgers ($14-$18), 12 entrees ($16-$37), handful of salads/sides ($4-$8), handful of desserts ($5-$8).

Our table “had”–Three Cheese Garlic Bread, House Salad, Mykonos Style Greek Salad, Quinoa Caprese Salad, Cheeseburger With French Fries, Crab Cake Sandwich, Baby Back Ribs, Key Lime Pie, Brownie With Vanilla Ice Cream…everything was delicious. Just so you know, the garlic bread appetizer easily fed 4-people, the salads and desserts large enough for 2-people to share.

For you-guys who like more “review detail”…the French fries weren’t as delicious as everything else–but Owner-Steve told me, that fresh-handcut fries would soon be replacing the frozen product being used. I must tell you-that the garlic bread appetizer topped with melted Monterey Jack/cheddar/parmesan cheese was off-the-chart. To be perfectly honest, 2-orders of that garlic bread with a 2-liter bottle of ice-cold Coke and Jeff Eats could do some serious damage to himself…a definite must order.

Look! I could go on and on–as to how the ribs were basted with a delicious sweet bbq sauce, or how the crab cakes were loaded with crab (what else?) with virtually no filler, or how the cheeseburger which came on a lightly toasted bun-was topped with shredded lettuce/tomato slice/pickles spears and a mustard/ketchup/mayo dressing, but I won’t.

At this stage of the game, you may want to check www.madisonsnewyork.com for menu/prices.

The truly amazing thing about Madisons was that the service was impeccable…to be honest with you, Jeff Eats went into this thing-thinking a hiccup or two, afterall it was a brand new joint…but au contraire (hey! I told you that the chain is out of Quebec!)—the food and service couldn’t have been better.

Let me wrap this all up for you,

Madisons is going to be a huge winner. Mark these words–perfect for the business lunch crowd–perfect for the happy hour crowd–perfect for both Boca Raton’s young families and its 55+ crowd.

No question in Jeff Eats’ mind, Madisons can definitely hold its own against local “American Style” players–The Cheesecake Factory, Houston’s and J. Alexander’s.

A cursory “menu-look” found Madisons’ price-points $2-$5 lower than its “next door” neighbor Houston’s…..Hey! I already told you- The guys who own this joint know how to run a restaurant.

One final thought, a little bird told Jeff Eats that Madisons owns the Boca Raton property/building–so, to paraphrase poet Ernest Henley – Madisons is the master of its fate, captain of its soul (I know, I know a bit dramatic).

Madisons is open Monday-Sunday 11am-11pm.

Every so often, you gotta go for the cash- and eat at an upscale-pricey joint! Just make sure that the food and service are dynamite!

By the way, if the steak doesn’t work for you- maybe the $48 16oz Double Rib Veal Chop or the $14 Oysters Rockefeller will!

New York Prime is an “upscale steakhouse” located in Boca Raton.

This is a re-review…the original review July 23, 2008 was a “so-so” finding.

Over the years, I have eaten in this joint a number of times. My last outing was this past Saturday night with an 8:30 pm reservation. Let’s just say, that from the crowd, it appears that the “recession” didn’t hit New York Prime. Wall to wall people…with a 30-minute wait to “honor” that 8:30 pm reservation.

I have mixed “feelings” on New York Prime. The food is delicious and the service is as good as it gets…that said, there is something about this joint which doesn’t sit right with old Jeff Eats. Can’t exactly put my finger on it, but each and every-time I have eaten there, I find the joint surreal…the latest outing had me “defining” the feeling- as “New Jersey Houswives comes to Boca”—a lot of plastic surgery going on here…I’ll leave you guys to figure out what this all means…let’s just say that the crowd to say the least is eclectic.

Let’s talk food…Delicious—-chopped salad ($9.50–enough for 2 people), 22 oz. bone-in-ribeye steak ($39.50), garlic chicken ($23.50), petite New York strip steak ($34), large sauteed onions ($11), large southwestern creamed corn ($11), large hash brown potatoes ($12).

Let me sum up the experience…excellent food, excellent service, prices aren’t too terrible. Loud track/live keyborad music… with people singing along (and I do mean singing along at the top of their lungs to folks like Neil Diamond, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons and Dion & The Belmonts)—if you are looking for a quiet-intimate–or even a dinner where you can hear yourself talk, New York Prime at least on a Saturday night, isn’t the joint for you.)

Take a look at New York Prime’s website www.centraarchy.com for menu/prices. New York Prime is open 7 days a week 5pm-11pm.

Every once and awhile, a joint like New York Prime is a real good place for an upscale steak-seafood dinner. Like I said before, the food and service are top-notch and the prices not toooo bad. The “show” is also something to see.

This evening I ate dinner at New York Prime an upscale steakhouse…you know exactly what this kind of joint is all about…where a 22 oz. bone-in-ribeye goes for $42…where a baked potato goes for $7.50. Personally, if I closed my eyes and just ate, I couldn’t tell you if I was in New York Prime, Abe & Louie’s, Chops, Morton’s, Ruth’s Chris… as they all play the same tune, give or take a different “note” here and there. As for tonight’s food, it was okay, nothing great…the steak was very fatty…the hash browns bland, your neighborhood bagel-deli makes better ones and doesn’t charge $11…the onion rings and sauteed onions sides were good, but pricey at $8 and $11 respectively.

For information about menu/prices/hours… check this joint’s website at www.centraarchy.com.

Just for fun…Do a bit of homework here…look at the menu prices and figure out what “your” theoretical meal would cost. I think your calculator will show, that unless you eat like a bird… a no alcohol-no appetizer-no dessert meal is going to run you something like 60-85 bucks a head.

Last night, my party of 4 dropped $300+…everyone agreed that the food was just fair and was way overpriced. For that kind of money, you would expect at least one “Boy! that sure was delicious” comment…don’t you think?

I know people who swear by this joint…Personally, I think it’s “a- big- to-do-over-nothing.” The same goes for most of the upscale steak joints in South Florida, with one exception that being the Strip House (see review 5/9/08) in Palm Beach Gardens which doesn’t take itself all that seriously.

Direct from the famous Magic Castle in Hollywood California, renowned Magician and Comedian, Bruce Gold, brings his unique brand of Humor and Hocus-pocus to Boca Black Box Theater for a show that will make you roar with laughter and gasp in astonishment!

Variety Magazine called Bruce Gold, “A funny man of considerable charm” and Seinfeld actor, Jason Alexander, said, “Bruce has a truly funny act with great writing, brilliant magic and an authentic connection with his audience.” You may have seen Bruce recently on the hit TV show, Fool Us, with Penn & Teller. He’s also appeared on TV shows including, Master’s of Illusion, An Evening at the Improv, the sitcom Full House and he’s even been a guest on Oprah. Bruce has performed in comedy clubs from coast to cost, on the world’s top cruise lines and in Las Vegas. When he was just 12 years-old he discovered he was a distant relative of Harry Houdini and imagined he too could become a famous magician, but when his first daring escape proved more amusing than amazing, Bruce realized making people laugh was a much better trick. He says, “As a comedy magician, unlike an escape artist, if a joke dies, I don’t.

***** The Dandee Donut Factory, 1900 East Atlantic Avenue, Pompano Beach, Florida 33060, (954) 785-1461.

Let me start by saying that Jeff Eats LOVES-The Dandee Donut Factory-in Pompano Beach.

For the record, Jeff Eats originally told you guys about Dandee on 11/19/11-but some stories warrant “re-telling”…

Just so we are straight, there are two other Dandee Donut outposts in South Florida-Deerfield Beach and Hollywood…Pompano Beach and Hollywood are owned by the same guy, while the Deerfield Beach store has a totally different-unrelated owner.

For the purposes of today’s story…I’m only talking about the Pompano Beach joint…which is open 24/7-which has indoor table/counter–outdoor patio seating…which makes amazing donuts and serves-up delicious “diner” food. If you are wondering why Jeff Eats is “featuring” Pompano Beach–it’s because this is the joint that Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have been frequenting -to the tune of something like twice a month for years. While I’m busy telling you my life story- Hollywood’s donuts/food are as good as Pompano’s…Deerfield Beach’s donuts are OK-but not great (Remember! I told you -this joint has a different owner not to mention a different baker)-but its diner food is decent enough.

At this stage of the game I’m gonna let you check dandeedonuts.com for menu/prices/other info.

If you got the time, you can “read” (or re-read, whatever the case may be) Jeff Eats’- The Dandee Donut Factory write -up (11/19/11).

I’m gonna close this story out by telling you, that if you want- terrific donuts, delicious diner food, fabulous pleasant service, perfect diner-decor (whatever that is!)…then you gotta get yourself over to The Dandee Donut Factory in Pompano Beach.

Oh! One other thing…

In surfing the net, Jeff Eats caught on TripAdvisor what I think is one of the greatest food reviews of all-time…

We rolled into Dandees about 1:00 AM at the end of August. Despite Pompano Beach being almost completely shuttered, Dandees was bustling. The donuts are far superior to Dunkin and the atmosphere was worth the trip. I believe my son met his future ex wife there!!

Trader Joe’s Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings (Trader Joe’s- Boca Raton)

***** Trader Joe’s Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings.

For the past several months, Son Jeff Eats has been raving about how delicious Trader Joe’s Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings were/are!

Accordingly, yesterday afternoon- Jeff Eats bought a package of Trader Joe’s Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings ($2.99) at the Trader Joe’s, 855 South Federal Highway, Boca Raton, Florida 33432, (561) 338-5031 and later that evening ran a “taste test” at home!

Happy to report that Son Jeff Eats- like his dad Jeff Eats knows his stuff, as Trader Joe’s Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings were/are delicious!

You can check traderjoes.com for store locations/info.

from traderjoes.com
After enjoying similar dumplings in a local dim sum eatery, our buyers went on a quest to create similar dumplings we could sell in our freezer case. It was a long road, because these dumplings, known as xiao long bao, need to be stuffed with not only a ground chicken filling, but also a savory broth, before freezing. We kept at it, for months. The flavor of the filling was right but the dough was too thick. The dough was just right, but the broth kept leaking out. And then finally, one fateful day, everything came together.

Trader Joe’s Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings are just that: a soft dumpling filled with chicken and a rich, savory broth. They come in a microwavable tray, and heat in two minutes or less. Once they’re heated through, we recommend some simple steps to amplify your enjoyment. First, you carefully remove them from the tray, taking care not to puncture the dough. This is important because you really don’t want to lose the soup inside. Yet. Place a Soup Dumpling on a large spoon and bite a small hole, big enough to let the gingery broth run out into the spoon – this is the step where you want the soup to come out, not before. Let them cool for just a bit – they’ll come out of the microwave very hot. And then, finally, put the whole thing – spoon, soup, dumpling – into your mouth and let the flavors, textures, and aromas treat you to that same dim sum experience that began our quest in the first place.

We haven’t seen dumplings like this in any other stores, and they’re challenging to find even in dim sum restaurants. But we have them in the freezers at Trader Joe’s, where we’re selling each six ounce box of six for $2.99, every day.
