***** Tio Colo Bocaditos de Helado, 6268 Southwest 8th Street, Miami, Florida 33144, (786) 536-9007.

Jeff Eats loved, Tio Colu Bocaditos de Helado…a hole in the wall ice cream store that has a handful of tables inside/outside.

Real simple concept…the joint makes “Cuban” ice cream sandwiches.

All of the ice cream is made in-house, figure something like a dozen different flavors—the ice cream which is hard-is then sandwiched between two slices of soft pound cake that are dusted in sugar. You pick your sandwich-out of a large freezer.

To make a long story short…Jeff Eats “sampled” (well someone has to do it!) chocolate, coconut, almond, dulce de leche-and I gotta tell you–this stuff is addictive…delicious ice cream/delicious pound cake.

As I mentioned a few seconds ago, I loved this joint…and if you like ice cream, you’ll be on the same page as Jeff Eats.

Tio Colo Bocaditos de Helado is open Tuesday-Friday 11am-8pm, Saturday noon-9pm, closed Sunday-Monday.

* Tom Cotter.

Last night Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats and something like 225 of our closest friends caught comedian-Tom Cotter in action. For those of you who are unfamilar with Cotter-he’s the comedian who a couple years-back came in second to a “dog act” on tv’s America’s Got Talent.

Anyway…

Just wanted you guys to know that Cotter is a very-very funny guy. For over an hour, he literally had the audience crying from laughter.

The reason I’m mentioning Tom Cotter–is 1: I just saw him-duh! and 2: In reviewing his website www.tomcotter.com -I see that the guy although based out of NYC–works quite a bit down here in South Florida. As a matter of fact, he is due for a run in Marco Island in April, 2014 and Fort Lauderdale in May, 2014.

Anyway…

If you are looking for a fun night out-with a clean comic…Tom Cotter fits the bill.

One final thought, I know that over the past year-or so, Cotter has appeared at a number of South Florida condos/country clubs/venues–this guy would be a real good recommendation for communities that have yet to book him.

* Critic’s Stars!

The Sun Sentinel uses a Star System for rating restaurants…

****=EXCELLENT
***= GOOD
**= FAIR
*= POOR

Today–one of the Sun Sentinel’s “food critics”–rated a restaurant * 1/2…

So…I guess the “nameless” restaurant was POOR but 1/2 way to being FAIR.

Now, I maybe nitpicking here…but I find the 1/2 star-business kinda silly…

Maybe the Sun Sentinel should eliminate the “fractions” and just add a TERRIBLE or maybe a HORRENDOUS or maybe an ARE YOU KIDDING ME “category” to its rating system.

Personally, I think that readers shouldn’t have to be mathematicians–to read a food review!

* Dave And Buster’s & Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlour.

The other day Jeff Eats received the following e-mail…
“Jeff,
My husband and I have been reading Jeff Eats for years. We love the site and have tried many of the restaurants that you mentioned. We really enjoy your sense of humor and easy going writing style.
We were wondering if you could give us a fun idea for a Sunday outing for sometime in April.
Our daughter and son in law will be attending a business conference in Orlando and are going to leave their 10 year old son and 7 year old daughter with us on Sunday morning around 8am- with a pickup the following Monday night. We live in Delray Beach and would like to do something special with the grandkids on Sunday. We would prefer indoor activities.
Any help would be appreciated.”
By the way, we are both 71 and in pretty decent shape.
Thanks,
MK
*****
MK: Got a perfect Sunday for you guys.

I think that you, your husband and both kids will love this…

Posted below are “reviews” for Dave And Buster’s & Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlour. Dave- is in Hollywood and Jaxson’s- is in Dania Beach—maybe 5-6 minutes drive from each other.

I would suggest planning on doing lunch/play at Dave And Buster’s from 1pm-4pm and then doing Jaxson’s from 4pm-5pm. It will be a fun day and the little tykes should be pretty exhausted-for the ride back to Delray Beach.

Have fun!

***** Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlour, 128 South Federal Highway, Dania Beach , Florida 33004, (954) 023-4445.
Jaxson’s has been around something like 50 years. This is one of the greatest joints in all of South Florida, not to mention the United States, to get great home-made ice cream. The Food Channel has done several stories on Jaxson’s.
Decorated in Early American License Plate, Jaxson’s is located in a non-descript strip-shopping center in Dania Beach. The joint is packed day and night with people stuffing their faces with some of the most delicious ice cream that you have ever tasted. The portions are enormous and “individual” servings can feed 1-2-3 people. Jaxson’s also does, burgers, hot dogs, salads etc., but the game here is ICE CREAM. Personally, my favorite is a waffle with a scoop of strawberry and a scoop of mocha chip. That single dish, is big enough to serve 2-3 people. Be smart and don’t over order here, because (1) you will be wasting a ton of great ice cream and (2) you will be wasting a ton of money.
I am telling you that you absolutely positively want to try this joint. The ice cream and food are great…the atmosphere is terrific…the service is terrific…and the “penny candy” assortment at the front of the joint will have you reminiscing about 1950′s Brooklyn-Bronx-Queens (etc,).
There are always lines waiting to get in and for take-out. Jaxson’s is open 7-days a week…Monday-Thursday 11:30am-11pm…Friday-Saturday 11:30am- midnight…Sunday noon-11p

***** Dave And Buster’s, 3000 Oakwood Boulevard, Hollywood, Florida 33020 (954) 923-5505.
Dave And Buster’s is a national chain of American-casual dining restaurants that feature enormous bar areas and humongous indoor video/skill game arcades…and I do mean humongous.
“Let’s cut to the chase”…the food is TGI Friday’s quality…the game arcade (maybe 20,000 sq ft.) awesome…great place for kids…great place for teenagers…great place for almost drunk adults…great place for the hard of hearing…the noise in the play area is borderline deafening. Check Dave And Buster’s website at www.daveandbusters.com for menu/hours/details.
For right now, Dave And Buster’s has something like 40 locations. There are currently 3 in Florida… Hollywood, Miami and Jacksonville. I have been to the Miami joint once and the Hollywood location something like 15 times. Just so you know, these aren’t sleazy joints…they are gorgeous, clean, well kept and very well supervised…think a Las Vegas Casino and you got the picture.
I am not hard of hearing…I don’t really drink…so you figure out whay old Jeff Eats was at the Florida joints so much.
Dave And Buster’s is open 7 days a week for lunch-dinner- late at night. By the way, Dave And Buster’s always has some “special” for food/games which makes this a very value oriented joint.. If you go, make sure that you ask what deals are available.
By the way, the last time I played at Dave And Buster’s I won something like 5,000,000 tickets and took home some really nice prizes…3 “Chinese finger puzzles”…you know, those 5 inch woven straw cylinders which you stick one finger from one hand in (at one end) and another finger from the other hand in (at the other end)…and then after all that work, you try and pull both fingers out…go figure.
Dave And Buster’s is a great place for kids and teenagers…and “you” folks” who accompany those teenagers and kids, will probably enjoy the joint, just bring a few pieces of cotton for your ears and some Bayer Asprin… what we won’t do for our children.

Sing Sing Karaoke (Miami Beach)

***** Sing Sing Karaoke, 717 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida 33139, (305) 763-8410.

Don’t even ask!

Jeff Eats was recently at Sing Sing Karaoke…a really cool- upscale-karaoke bar in Miami Beach.

You can “sing” -one of two ways at Sing Sing…you can wait your turn in the full-liquor bar- or you and your friends/relatives/co-workers can rent a private room (which is fully equipped with sound/lights) where you can sing your little hearts out.

Sing Sing Karaoke doesn’t serve food, but allows customers to order/bring in food from local restaurants. Sing Sing’s “game” is to sell you “time” and booze–really, just that simple.

You can check Sing Sing’s website www.singsingmiami.com for song lists/charges/other info.

Like I said a few seconds ago…Don’t even ask! But I will tell you that my covers of Wooly Bully, Ooo Baby and If Ever You’re In My Arms Again–absolutely killed!

Be like “Mikey” and try it…

Sing Sing Karaoke is open Sunday-Thursday 5pm-3am, Friday-Saturday 5pm-5am.

* One Of Jeff Eats’ Favorite Yelp Reviews!

Read this one on YELP.

Now nothing for nothing, I’ll bet you guys a buck that “those” grandparents were more than happy to let these two-food critics- escape.

Enjoy…
*****
“My sister and I were visiting our grandparents in Delray Beach recently. This is something that Jews often do. We decided we wanted to escape for a bit and go somewhere where we were not the youngest people by 20 years, so we went downtown. My sister is a Buddhist and we are both suckers for places with an overly hip Asian theme, so here we were.

It was kind of bumpin’ on a Saturday at 10pm, but filled up more by the time we left. We found a table, ordered some sake and a sampler of sashimi and chatted for awhile while admiring the view. The sake was very good. The sashimi was better. The prices were high, but your usual for downtown. Service was good enough. We left happy.”

* Disco Mania.

For sure, South Florida in recent years has had its fair share of 1950’s-1960’s oldies- shows…that said, if you do some checking–you’ll find that the “area” really hasn’t had too many “1970’s disco” shows. No question-there are a -load of Abba and Bee Gees’ tribute bands that have come through…but very few shows that actually featured legendary disco artists…

Way back on August 19, 2013 I told you guys about Disco Mania…that’s set for Sunday, March 16, 2014 at the Coral Springs Center For The Arts…

The show features LEGENDARY PERFORMERS…TAVARES– THE TRAMMPS–FRANCE JOLI–MONTI ROCK III–MUSIQUE.

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats are “going” to Disco Mania… we can’t wait to see these acts in action– really looking forward to meeting them at the “Meet & Greet” after the show.

There are a few seats left.

Printed below is the original August 19, 2013 article which has all of the details on the show/tickets.

BY THE WAY…if you buy your tickets online…type in the passcode “MANIA” and you’ll get 15% off the ticket price.

See you guys there!

No question in my mind that this “thing” is gonna sell-out…

Some of you inquisitive guys might like to-do some Googling on the EDM business, it’s a very interesting “read.”

* Barry Newman’s “Memories Of Gold” Show.

Got something terrific for you “oldies” fans out there…

Barry Newman’s “Memories Of Gold” Show—set for Friday- March 28, 2014 (8pm) at the Kings Point Theatre in Delray Beach.

This show which was just added to Kings Point’s schedule- features music from 1940’s-1970’s with vocalists…Barry Newman (formerly of The Crests), Richie Merritt (formerly of The Marcels), Sal Prado (formerly of The Reflections) and Michael D’Amore. Just so you know, over the past several years, Jeff Eats has caught all 4-vocalists in action, and they are all great singers/showmen.

If you like “oldies”–you are gonna love this show. “Hits” you will definitely hear include, “Sixteen Candles”–“Blue Moon”–“Just Like Romeo and Juliet”–

For those who missed him on Januray 18, 2014, Michael D’Amore received 3-standing ovations at a Kings Point show…his covers of “Sherry”–“Big Girls Don’t Cry”–“Hey There Lonely Girl” had the crowd screaming for more. Following that show, D’Amore was mobbed in the theatre’s lobby for autographs/photos/cds and entertained with acapella versions of “Gloria”–“Diamonds and Pearls.”

Now nothing for nothing…Jeff Eats knows that oldies’ shows in South Florida are like Chins in a Chinese phonebook. Trust me, I know that “every” condo/country club and tons of bars/restaurants have oldies shows-In Season. Just so you know, this Barry Newman’s “Memories Of Gold” Show is going to be something-special…the four “stars” are top-stuff—and I’ll bet you that this relatively new “foursome” will be in huge demand in 2015–so, why not be the first to see “them” before everyone else does? If you check www.2bproductions.net you’ll find a video that will give you some idea as to what this show is all about.

One final thought, based on the tremendous show that Michael D’Amore put on Kings Point–Jeff Eats wouldn’t be surprised to see this show sell-out very quickly.

Check www.kingspointdelray.com for tickets. Figure- Kings Point residents $13, non-residents a couple bucks more…no service charges.

Printed below is a PR piece on Barry Newman’s “Memories Of Gold Show.
