***** MaggieMoo’s Ice Cream & Treatery, 2571 South University Drive, Davie, Florida 33324, (954) 382-1677.

MaggieMoo’s Ice Cream & Treatery is a “national” retail ice cream chain…it opened its first store in 1989 and currently has 3-Florida locations.

MaggieMoo’s stores make their ice cream-in-house…MaggieMoo’s hook-is that in addition to a set- flavor line-up…you can also pick from a slew of toppings which are then “folded” into the chosen hard ice cream. For you ice cream students out there, think Cold Stone Creamery and Marble Stone Creamery and you’ll be on the right concept page.

The other day Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats gave the MaggieMoo’s Davie joint a shot…sampled flavors–Chocolate 2 The Extreme, Express Yourself, Banana Beach, Cherry Vanilla Vacation, Better Batter Boogie Board and I gotta tell you…the ice cream was off the chart. You can check- www.maggiemoos.com for the description of the above flavors–and others on the menu.

I know that you guys are a smart-bunch-well at least some of you are…

As I mentioned above, Maggie Moo’s is a national chain, that said-Jeff Eats did some checking and found that it currently has 69 locations–down from a high of 400 stores just a few short years ago. Not to go into too much detail, but I also learned, that both Cold Stone and Marble Slab franchises have in recent years -been closing at an alarming rate– this- has Jeff Eats thinking that the novelty of “folding in” ice cream may have shot its load with retail customers. Now I’m just guessing here, but “the seen it, done it” factor maybe at play here. With that in mind, look for the “nitrogen made” ice cream concept to now get a “run” and then witness the inevitable musical-chair retail collapse.

Anyway…

Jeff Eats has absolutely no idea as to how (for our purposes) the Davie and to a lesser extent the Jacksonville and Orange Park joints are doing…what I do know, is that Maggie Moo’s ice cream is amazingly delicious.

Let me wrap this up for you,

Jeff Eats loved MaggieMoo’s. Its ice cream is delicious.

MaggiMoo’s Ice Cream & Treatery is open Sunday-Thursday noon-10pm, Friday-Saturday noon-11pm.

* American Pop 60’s.

Way back on November 7, 2010- Jeff Eats told you guys about American Pop 60’s–an absolutely amazing- 1960’s Rock N Roll cover band based out of Orlando, Florida. That write-up is reprinted below.

It would be an understatement to say-that over the ensuing years since that article first appeared that- American Pop 60’s public appearances have been extremely limited. Just so you know, the “primary” reason for the lack of gigs- was/is that American Pop 60’s lead singer-Mark Dawson also happens to be the lead singer of the legendary 1960’s group-The Grass Roots–and their USA touring schedule has basically shelved American Pop 60’s for months at a time.

To make a long story short, on Sunday-April 12, 2014 from 7pm-9pm at the Deltona Amphitheater, 2150 Eustace Avenue, Deltona, Florida–American Pop 60’s is performing a FREE-2-HOUR CONCERT.

If you like 1960’s Rock n Roll…and will be anywhere near the Deltona Amphitheater on April 12th…do yourself a big favor and catch this band in action.

Trust Jeff Eats on this one…in my day I’ve seen tons of 60’s recording bands and tons of 60’s cover bands–and American Pop 60’s is right up there with the best of them.

American Pop 60’s is a band not to be missed!

***** American Pop 60′s *****

If you like 60′s Rock N Roll, I got something for you…American Pop 60′s, a terrific 4-piece 1960′s cover band based in Orlando, Florida. The group does absolutely perfect renditions of American hits from 1960-1969. The band also has a big kicker…namely, lead singer Mark Dawson…who also- happens to be the current lead singer of the lengendary 1960′s-1970′s band, The Grass Roots who have sold over 20,000,000 records worldwide…with hits such as–Let’s Live For Today, Sooner Or Later, Where Were You When I Need You, Temptation Eyes, Midnight Confessions. Two Divided By Love, Wait A Million Years, The River Is Wide.

Like I said before, if you like 1960′s American Rock N Roll…you will absolutely love American Pop 60′s. In addition to a “mini” Grass Roots concert, American Pop 60′s performs hauntingly accurate versions of gold & platinum hits by groups– The Buckinghams, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Three Dog Night, The Doors,The Rascals, just to name a few.

I recently saw American Pop 60′s at a private party…they blew me away. They are sensational.

Look for this band- to start making the rounds of South Florida’s residential communities, country clubs and concert venues…www.ap60.bandzoogle.com.

Zuccarelli’s Italian Kitchen (West Palm Beach)

***** Zuccarelli’s Italian Kitchen, 4595 Okeechobee Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida 33409, (561) 686-7739.

Got a -good Italian joint for you…Zuccarelli’s Italian Kitchen in West Palm Beach.

How did Jeff Eats find this one?

Michael D’Amore told me about the joint. If you “search” Michael D’Amore on Jeff Eats–you’ll find a number of “stories” about this fabulous vocalist!

To make a long story short, a couple of months ago D’Amore (who performs at Zuccarelli’s) told me about the joint and raved about the food–so the other night, Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple gave the restaurant a shot.

Jeff Eats’ thinking on the “recommendation”–D’Amore, a legendary South-Jersey lounge performer–has eaten/performed in more Italian joints than there are Chins in a Chinese phonebook–so I figured that he might just know what he was talking about (see how scientific this food reviewing gig is?)

For what it’s worth, D’Amore was spot on…dishes “tried”–margherita pizza, baked clams, fried calamari, veal parmigiana, chicken marsala, shrimp scampi, meat lasagna… the food was really good. If I had to “do” a pecking order–lasagna, pizza, clams, veal parmigiana, shrimp scampi, chicken marsala, calamari–trust me, it was all good -but I know that some of you guys like “reviews” all tied-up with nice bows–so there you go!

On the price front, “neighborhood red sauce joint prices”–

On the service front, not good news here-the food was slow getting out of the kitchen and the word “attentive” never entered the service equation. Hey Zuccarelli’s! trust me- it isn’t the customers job to “chase” the waitress down for water-soda refills! Let’s put it this way, even as a kid Jeff Eats-wasn’t much into playing “hide and seek.”

For you historians out there, Zuccarelli’s has been around for something like 32-years…it’s a casual joint-with both indoor/outdoor patio seating. The restaurant also has “live” entertainment–so when you check www.zuccarellis.com for menu/prices/photos you may also want to take a look at its entertainment schedule.

Zuccarelli’s is open Monday-Saturday 11am-10pm, Sunday 4pm-10pm.

Hamburger Heaven (West Palm Beach)

***** Hamburger Heaven, 1 North Clematis Street, West Palm Beach, Florida 33401, (561) 655-5277.

Way back on July 7, 2008 Jeff Eats told you guys about Hamburger Heaven-that was located at 314 South County Road in Palm Beach.

In a nutshell, “that” Hamburger Heaven was a 1945 (from 1945-1953 it was located at 295 South County Road) “mom & pop” diner–that had a horseshoe stool counter/handful of booths–and made delicious hamburgers.

For those of you who might care, Jeff Eats’ original article is reprinted below.

To make a long story short, in 2013 Hamburger Heaven moved from its South County home and opened on Clematis Street.

Anyway…

The other day, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats got up to the new Hamburger Heaven for lunch…now nothing for nothing, I liked the “real 1940’s-1950’s” décor better than- the current “faux 1940’s-1950’s” décor…but I will tell you, that the cheeseburgers, French fries, onion rings, griddled hot dogs, chocolate/vanilla shakes- we had were all-delicious.

Look! Jeff Eats is a bona fide sucker for real-old diners–that said, I definitely can appreciate Hamburger Heaven’s leap into the 21st Century…for sure, if I hadn’t been to the Real McCoy (you guys do remember Walter Brennan and Richard Crenna, sure you do!)–I’d be going nuts over the new location’s decor, but what is-is.

Hamburger Heaven’s menu is packed with breakfast stuff, sandwiches, burgers, a create your own salad “thing”-desserts. Take a look at www.hamburgerheavenpb.com…you’ll find loads of pictures/ menu-prices.

Let me wrap this up for you…

The “new” Hamburger Heaven is a winner. Welcome to the 21st Century (that- create your own salad “thing” is the tip-off that it ain’t the 50’s anymore…not to mention the large outdoor dining patio, that I’m just now telling you about.)

Hamburger Heaven is open Monday-Friday 11am-9pm, Saturday 9am-9pm, Sunday 9am-3pm.

***** Hamburger Heaven, 314 South County Road, Palm Beach, Florida 33480 (561) 655-5277.

Hamburger Heaven has been in business since 1945. It’s got booths and a horseshoe shaped counter for seating.

This joint is open Monday-Saturday 7:30 am-8pm. It is closed on Sunday.

This is one of my favorite places for a “nice” greasy cheeseburger/french fries/Coke. Hamburger Heaven has loads of toppings for its burgers…This is also a great place for a diner-type breakfast. For those of you not into the burger scene, this joint also has a full-lineup of salads and sandwiches.

* THE ZOMBIES.

Just a reminder…THE ZOMBIES are scheduled to appear tomorrow night-April 8th at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach.

Reprinted below–is Jeff Eats’ March 31, 2014 “story” on the event.

Trust Jeff Eats on this one-

IF YOU ARE A FAN OF 1960’s ROCK ‘N ROLL YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS CONCERT!

The Zombies (Mardi Gras Casino–Hallandale Beach)

* The Zombies.

Every so often, “something” comes along that is really too good to pass-up…

With that in mind- on Tuesday Night- April 8, 2014, The Zombies will be appearing in concert at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach.

Jeff Eats is thinking that most of you guys know who The Zombies are…for what it’s worth- Jeff Eats considers The Zombies to be one of the greatest 1960′s British Invasion Bands…

Trust me on this one–The Zombies “today” are as good as they were way back in the 60′s. I saw the group a year or so ago, and lead singer Colin Blunstone sounds exactly as he did on the group’s hit records “She’s Not There”-”Tell Her No”-”Time Of The Season”. What many folks don’t know, is that Zombies’ co-founder Rod Argent- after leaving The Zombies in 1969- fronted the group Argent-which had the 1972 mega hit “Hold Your Head Up.” Not to bore you with Rock ‘N Roll history–but Blunstone and Argent formally reunited as The Zombies in 2004 and since then have been in huge demand playing concerts all over the world.

Jeff Eats has previously done two “stories” on this upcoming concert…As a matter of fact, I reprinted the February 27, 2014 “one” below.

Let me wrap this one up for you–

If you want to see one of the greatest 60′s British Invasion bands–then you gotta see The Zombies.

Really just that simple!
*****

* The Zombies.

Just this second, received a PR e-mail from the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach.

You can “play” food blogger (just like Jeff Eats does) and read the particulars on THE ZOMBIES’ scheduled April 8, 2014 Mardi Gras Casino concert.

Trust Jeff Eats on this one, The Zombies back in 1964 were an amazing band-and 50 years later-still are.

The Mardi Gras Casino is a great outdoor venue…and every seat is good.

When you see/hear original members Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent–you’ll wonder why you aged-and these guys didn’t. I think its got something to do with –”The Picture of Dorian Gary.”- but that’s just a guess!

Rollatini Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria (Lake Worth)

***** Rollatini Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria, 7125 Lake Worth Road, Lake Worth, Florida 33467, (561) 721-0089.

Just got back home from eating at Rollatini Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria- a mom & pop” red sauce Italian joint in Lake Worth. Jeff Eats is thinking that maybe Rollatini seats 60–its menu has the full boat of appetizers, pizzas, pastas, subs, meat/chicken/seafood entrees. You can check menu/prices at www.rollatinirestaurant.com.

Tonight’s menu had “cash” and “credit card” prices…soup or salad, entree with pasta side/or vegetable side/or potato side, beverage–cash $14.99 credit card $15.99. While there, I also checked Rollatini’s lunch menu–suffice it to say, that Monty Hall would have had a blast at Rollatini.

Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple-ordered, veal parmigiana, chicken cacciatore, veal & eggplant parmigiana, meat lasagna-house salads, minestrone soups. garlic knots.

The verdict…the food was OK–but that’s about it. To be honest with you, other than the chicken cacciatore the other stuff wasn’t worth wasting calories on.

For our purposes–let’s call Rollatini a “quantity/price over quality” joint…big-portions, cheap prices, decent service.

Look!

There are loads of folks down here–looking for a lot of food-for relatively cheap money. Suffice it to say, many of them will sacrifice QUALITY to get soup or salad–garlic knots–entree-pasta side-beverage in that quest. Not trying to be nasty or nothing, but that’s the only reason why I could see someone “picking” Rollatini. Now in all fairness, while at the restaurant at least 12 people raved about the food–so just maybe Jeff Eats “missed” something there–I don’t think so, in that a bunch of those same folks also told me-that Rollatini use to have a “deal” where they got soup, salad, garlic knots, entree, pasta side, dessert and beverage for a buck less-than the current $14.99-$15.99 rate.

Let me wrap this one up..

Rollantini definitely serves a purpose–for some people. Trust me, I got no problem with how you or anyone else spends or counts their money–the joint just ain’t for Jeff Eats.

Rollatini Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria is open 7 days a week 11:30am-9pm.

Trust me-Jeff Eats caught it right away…that being the play on Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” after-all I did graduate from Ithaca College and Brooklyn Law School.

Anyway…

Porky and Beth’s is the kinda joint that Jeff Eats goes looking for…real simple concept-a bbq trailer with a handful of smokers that turns out some-real delicious lightly smoked -sweet/glazed ribs, brisket, pulled pork, chicken…order at the window-outdoor thatched tiki hut with benches and tables–

For what it’s worth–Jeff Eats has been hearing about Porky and Beth’s for years…this afternoon was the first time that I made a conscientious effort to “get there.” Big mistake-waiting so long, the food was dynamite–by the way, you gotta try the joint’s mac & cheese–delicious.

Now for the bummer…Porky’s is only open Saturday-Sunday 10:30am-5pm…so don’t be making plans to eat lunch there Monday-Friday.

Porky and Beth’s has been around for something like 4 years and has a “catering” service–that handles private parties/events. Just a thought–rent the tiki-hut from Bedner’s and have a private party catered by Porky and Beth’s.

Real simple-Porky and Beth’s BBQ is a real winner.

***** El Mago de las Fritas, 5828 Southwest 8th Street, West Miami, Florida 33144, (305) 266-8486.

Heard about this Cuban-joint from my buddies over at Burger Beast (www.burgerbeast.com).

A real-mom & pop deal…maybe a half-dozen counter seats, maybe 6 tables.

Burger Beast told Jeff Eats that El Mago de las Fritas made the most amazing–fritas…so that’s what Jeff Eats ordered. For “you” uneducated guys out there–we’re talking basically- a flat-top griddled “seasoned” hamburger topped with fine julienne potatoes. Real easy order–a double frita and a double frita with American cheese/fried egg. AMAZING!!!!

Check www.elmagodelasfritas.com for menu/prices/photos.

El Mago de las Fritas is open Monday-Saturday 8am-8pm, closed Sunday.
