***** Bay Bays Chicken & Waffles.

Here’s a recent e-mail Jeff Eats received.

Jeff,
Can you point me and my husband in the right direction for some terrific fried chicken & waffles. We live in Boynton Beach and have no problem traveling for great top food.
Thanks,

Lynn F:

Check-out Bay Bays Chicken & Waffles in West Palm Beach.

There are 2-locations.

Printed down below is Jeff Eats’ 5/5/13 “story.”

Thanks for reading…
_______________

May 5, 2013
***** Bay Bays Chicken & Waffles, 2400 Okeechobee Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida 33409, (561) 429-3796 & 1558 Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida 33401, (561) 360-3591.

Late this afternoon, Jeff Eats came across a “southern” chicken/ribs joint that I think you guys will absolutely love…Bay Bays Chicken & Waffles. Just so you know, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats ate at the 2400 Okeechobee Boulevard location…the 1558 Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard joint is scheduled to open sometime next week.

To be perfectly honest with you–Bay Bays was an “impulse stop”—Jeff Eats saw Bay Bays’ big chicken sign from the road and like a Greek siren the red/yellow 1200 square foot run down/free standing building with its 24 outdoor bench seats and 30 indoor booth/counter seats called my name…remember the movie “Deliverance”? Bay Bays looks exactly what Jeff Eats “envisions” 1950’s-1960’s southern roadside joints having looked like.

Anyway…

At this stage of the discussion you can check menu/prices/photos at www.baybays.com.

Bay Bays menu features some of the most delicious fried chicken and babyback ribs that Jeff Eats has had in a very long time. For sure, the joint’s menu has its fair share of salads/subs/sandwiches/burgers/pastas/desserts but the real game here is the chicken and waffles’ (plain, apple cinnamon, peanut butter & jelly, cuban coffee, cornbread, lemon cake, red velvet, strawberry, chocolate, pumpkin pie, pecan) combo and the fall-off the bone -sweet sauced oven baked ribs.

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats shared a 1/2 fried chicken/plain waffle ($11.95)–1/3 slab of ribs/macaroni & cheese/mashed potatoes ($9.95) and–every item was absolutely dynamite…Just a fast note– the fried chicken has a spicy kick to it -which is balanced by the sweet waffle flavors offered–the combo of spicy/sweet in one “mouthful” was really delicious. For those of you who aren’t as adventuresome as Jeff Eats–on request, Bay Bays will make your chicken toned-down.

Like I said a few seconds ago, the game here-for Jeff Eats “is” the chicken/waffles and the ribs…that said, the table next to us raved about the fried catfish (no thank you!) sandwich and jerk turkey burger they had. As Jeff Eats has said countless times—each to their own—live and let live—one if by land, two if by sea.

No fooling around here, Bay Bays is something you gotta try.

So there is no misunderstanding or anything…

Bay Bays which has been open 8 months–serves beer and wine-and is about as casual as it gets. When we arrived, our waitress brought us a couple of fried chicken wings on a paper napkin to-taste—soda was served by the bottle and samples of collard green and baked beans also found their way to the table. Just so you know, those great-ribs are only served Friday-Saturday-Sunday “from 3pm until gone.” Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats were there from 3:30pm to 4:15pm–we ate outside and really enjoyed Okeechobee Road’s speeding traffic–during the time we were there, every seat inside was taken and let’s say 82% of the outside seats were filled. By the way, every customer surveyed was clad in shorts.

If you are looking for fancy schmancy—this joint ain’t gonna work for you.

Now nothing for nothing, Jeff Eats can’t really say for sure what 1950’s-1960’s southern roadside joints really looked like…afterall, we didn’t have too many of them on Cortelyou Road in Brooklyn. Look, I saw “Deliverance” (Do you remember what they did to Ned Beatty’s character?) and have read numerous articles/books so I think I’m making a real good call here…Bay Bays has got it down-perfectly!

Finally, Bay Bays is set -later this week to open an inline location on Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard. Bay Bays owner (Israel) told Jeff Eats that the new store will have the exact same menu/color scheme/decor as the original location—the only thing I question (that figures) is whether the Bay Bays’ concept loses something in the translation without having the outdoor patio/free standing/run-down building look that makes its first location absolutely cool! Time will tell on that.

Jeff Eats loved Bay Bays.

The joint is open for breakfast/lunch/dinner…Sunday-Thursday 9am-11pm, Friday-Saturday 9am-midnight.

Barrel Of Monks Brewing, 1141 South Rogers Circle #5, Boca Raton, Florida 33487, (561) 510-1253.

From its website barrelofmonks.com-Barrel Of Monks Brewing describes itself as…
Brewery
Out of our passion for beer made by monks in Belgium, was born Barrel of Monks Brewing.
We love Belgian beer! We proudly brew Belgian inspired ales to bring the taste of the old world a little closer to home at our production brewery in Boca Raton, FL.
We use the finest equipment and ingredients and combine that with a deep understanding and love of Belgian ales to create finely crafted ales that pay homage to the great beers made in Belgium.
Our beers are created for those who are willing to take the time to truly appreciate the look, aroma, taste, and overall experience of a fine ale. We will not compromise the quality of our products by taking shortcuts or using inferior ingredients in the effort to make money, and we believe that quality of the beer is the number one goal.
____
In a nutshell a small local brewery located in an industrial park, which is looking to sell its products both- wholesale and retail (it has a small bar on premises)…food trucks and restaurant deliveries provide food.

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats were at the 3/25/15 “opening party”- where “guests” paid for beer samples and food truck offerings…

Nothing for nothing, but Jeff Eats just doesn’t get this “deal.”

Unless I am really missing something here- the retail part of Barrel is going to be at best a “college kid ala Animal House” destination…taking that theory one step further- Boca Raton isn’t exactly College Town USA- so the audience is gonna be quite minimal! Throw in a location that absolutely STINKS (if you don’t have a GPS in your car you’re a goner!) and I see big time River City problems ahead!

As for the wholesale-end of the business, Jeff Eats has no real “knowledge” about the wholesale micro-brewery industry…so I really can’t comment on the viability of Barrel Of Monk’s wholesale prospects.

Jeff Eats wishes the owners well!

***** Broadway Bagels, 10085 Cleary Boulevard, Plantation, Florida 33324, (954) 424-3905.

Got a good bagel joint for you guys…Broadway Bagels in Plantation which has been around for something like 33 years.

Jeff Eats and a couple of buddies recently ate breakfast there- and I gotta tell you that Broadway Bagels’ deli omelette ($7.99-corned beef/pastrami/Swiss cheese), blueberry pancakes ($6.99) and corned beef hash ($7.99) were all-right on the money! Throw in REAL GOOD sesame, everything and onion bagels- and Jeff Eats would definitely do a second-visit! Just so we are straight with each other, Broadway Bagels isn’t curing cancer or nothing here- the food is good-with its bagels (made the right way- hand rolled/boiled/baked) being the real “keeper” of this tale!-so if you go, BAGELS!

You can check menu/prices at broadwaybagelsflorida.com

Broadway Bagels is open 7 days a week 6:30am-3pm.

A recent e-mail…

Hey Jeff,

Husband and I moved to Boca from Philly 6 months ago. Have tried out a number of your recommendations and we got similar tastes.
On Wednesday, I have a load of Philly family coming to stay with us over the holidays.
What’s a good Boca joint for subs especially Philly cheesesteaks where I can pick up a load of sandwiches for a big casual dinner?
Thanks in advance,
Laura Messina

Laura Messina:

Give Swifty’s Market Grill & Deli in Boca Raton a close look.

Swifty’s makes terrific subs.

Nothing for nothing, you-being from Philly-may know better than Jeff Eats, but I gotta rate Swifty’s Philly cheesesteak sub absolutely- awesome!

Just so you know, in addition to its Boca Raton joint, Swifty’s also has a location at 701 East Atlantic Avenue, Pompano Beach, Florida 33060, (954) 781-1312.

Down below is a reprint of my 4/29/14 Swifty “review.”

Thanks for reading…

Now, let’s be honest with one- another…

Have you ever met a sub-hoagie-grinder-blimpie (you- fill in your favorite regional “term”) that you didn’t like? Now for sure, some subs (that’s what Jeff Eats calls them) are better than others…but I can’t ever recall saying…”Boy this sub stinks. I’m not going to eat it. Let me just throw it in that garbage can over there.”

Anyway,

Not sure on this…but over the past few years- I must have driven by Swifty’s Market Grill & Deli something like 25,209,849 times without ever stopping. From the outside-and actually from the inside too–it’s basically a “hole in the wall” convenience store. As the old saying goes, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”–well- in the back of the convenience store is- a take-out-only- sub-counter that makes the full-boat of hot and cold hoagies..

For what it’s worth, I just got back from Swifty’s Market Grill & Deli and as I type–I am enjoying one of the most delicious grilled Philly Cheesesteak Subs (chopped steak/American Cheese/grilled onions/peppers) that I’ve ever had. Really just that simple!

Based alone-on its Philly Cheesesteak Sub…Swifty Market Grill & Deli is a must try.

For the curious, Jeff Eats was “tipped” this morning (while walking Jiggy Eats) to- Swifty’s by a Comcast serviceman who was working down the block from my home.

Let me wrap this up…

Finally-Comcast did something right!

Swifty’s Market Grill & Deli is open Monday-Saturday 7am-10pm, Sunday 9am-9pm.

* JP’s Bagel Place.

It’s joints like JP’s Bagel Place that make Jeff Eats-a cool thing to do- namely telling you guys about a hole-in-the-wall bagel/deli joint that is absolutely off the chart!

Told you about JP’s on 12/12/08 and 4/1/10-telling you again on 3/30/15…

Trust Jeff Eats on this one, you’ll love this joint!

On December 12, 2008, I told you guys about JP’s Bagel Place…well, until a few days ago, I hadn’t been back–and things were just as terrific as I remembered.

JP’s Bagel Place in Hollywood is a “bagel-deli-diner”…maybe the joint seats 20 people. Check JP’s website www.jpsbagelplace.com for menu/prices/photos.

I love–and–I do mean love, hole in the wall joints like JP’s…nothing fancy, nothing expensive—just, good food, good service, good prices. JP’s has been around since 1982, so you got to figure…it must be doing something right.

A recent outing had me doing…western omelette (home fries, plain bagel $5.95), cheeseburger & fries ($4.95), chicken parm sub (chips, $6.25), philly cheesesteak sub (chips $6.50). Like I said before, good solid DINER FOOD.

JP’s does breakfast & lunch…Monday-Friday 7am-2pm and Saturday-Sunday 7am-1pm.

My money says…that every “neighborhood” in America has a joint just like JP’s Bagel Place…for sure, the names are different, but the decor-ambiance-food-service-prices are basically the same.

JP’s Bagel Place in Hollywood, has been around since 1982. This joint is a “neighborhood” diner and seats maybe 20. JP’s does breakfast-lunch, Monday-Friday 7am-2pm and Saturday-Sunday 7am-1pm. Take a look at its website at www.jpbagel.com for menu/prices.

JP’s Bagel is not a “typical” South Florida bagel-deli with 522 types of bagels and 91 different cream cheese spreads…but rather, shall we say, a mini-diner/lunchonette…very similar to those that dotted the United States in the 1950’s-1980’s…long before guys like Starbuck’s arrived on the scene. Guaranteed, this joint’s waitresses will “remember” you after you have eaten there once or twice.

I love joints like JP’s…real easy going atmosphere, terrific wait-staff and cheeseburgers/fries that go for $4.75 and chicken parm subs for $6.25.

If you live in JP’s neighborhood, you now know about a great place for a casual-inexpensive breakfast or lunch.

Latest Review: 6/19/12

If you’re looking for a joint to hold your college class reunion at, Tippi’s Pizza ain’t gonna work for you…maybe its got 2-3 tables…that said, definitely one of the best “New York” slices down here in sunny South Florida.

Printed down below the “original- 6/19/12 review.”

***** Tippi’s Pizza, 5778 Okeechobee Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida 33417, (561) 681-9224.

Got a real “hole in the wall” pizza joint for you…Tippi’s Pizza in West Palm Beach. Think takeout here- as the joint maybe has 2-3 tables.

Tippi’s Pizza’s menu has a nice selection of appetizers, salads, hot/cold subs, pastas, calzones, pizzas, meat/chicken/seafood entrees.

A few days ago I took some stuff out from Tippi’s…large plain pizza, meatball parmigiana sub, veal parmigiana sub, sausage & peppers sub, —every item was right on the money. Now I don’t want to “intrude” on my pals over at www.worstpizza.com domain–but I think, that Tippi’s pizza could successfully be sold at any NYC pizza joint. The slice, crisp-thin crust/sweet sauce/delicious cheese and when folded and pointed down- had the requisite oil drip. The $7 subs were also “perfect”—nice hard- crusty sub roll and the messy fillings were exactly what I like when I’m in front of the tv with a 2-liter bottle of Coke to wash things down.

Let me close this story out this way…if Tippi’s was in my neighborhood, I’d be a very good customer.

Tippi’s Pizza is open Monday-Thursday 11am-11pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-midnight, Sunday 11am-10pm
