If- like Jeff Eats you are a fan of the “mom & pop” diner-concept- I got an absolutely terrific diner for you…Doc’s Diner in Key Largo. By the way, I first told you guys about Doc’s way-back on 6/18/12- but somethings really do-bear repeating!

No reason to spin you guys a detailed tale…tons of breakfast stuff, burgers, salads, sandwiches, salads, entrees, desserts. Counter/table-booth seating, open 7 days a week 6am-2pm.

A recent breakfast outing had Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats doing…banana pancakes and strawberry French toast- and I must-say- both were off the hook! Throw in super pleasant service, reasonable prices (which you can check at docsdinerkeylargo.com) and you got a dynamite joint for breakfast and lunch.

Jeff Eats loved Doc’s- and unless there is something seriously wrong with you- you will too!

Next time you are “down” in Key Largo…give “mom & pop” diner-Doc’s Diner a shot.

First things first, yes–the name “got” me in the door…and yes, before I even walked in the door, I knew in my mind’s eye as to exactly what the joint and its menu would look like. AND. my money says you to would “know”…but if I’m wrong-check www.docsdinerkeylargo.com for menu/prices/pictures. Counter/booth “formica” seating. Open 7 days a week 6am-2pm. Loads of breakfast stuff, sandwiches, burgers, salads, daily meat/chicken seafood specials, desserts.

Second things second, did breakfast at Doc’s Diner…real simple…scrambled eggs with bacon/home fries, pancakes, french toast, coffee. Exactly what I expected, good solid food, super pleasant waitress, about 7 bucks a head (with tip)–For sure, your neighborhood “Doc’s” got a different name–maybe it’s Joe’s, Tom Sawyer’s, Peter Pan, Johnny’s…but give or take—they are all the same, that-go-to local breakfast/lunch joint where you really enjoy eating “dolled up” in your tee shirt/shorts/flip flops ensemble.

All I know, is that–Madison Avenue has got it all wrong…America runs on the “DOC’S” of this world-not Dunkin’ Donuts.

Jeff Eats is gonna take a shot here- I’m thinking that you guys know what Carvel is…if you don’t, it’s “Google Time.” By the way, if you have to Google- while you’re researching also checkout the term Flying Saucer!

Anyway,

For the record, down here in South Florida its-always been a very close toss-up for me between Carvel and Dairy Queen and I do mean REALCLOSE. Just in case we go on The Newlywed Game tv-show together, Dairy Queen is the pick, but like I just said 2 seconds ago it’s real close.

Anyway,

Last night around 8:15pm I picked up 2 six packs of Vanilla/Chocolate Flying Saucers ($10.59) and by 8:56pm there were only 7 left. Now, you mathematicians out there can solve the equation- If Mrs. Jeff Eats ate 1 Flying Saucer, how many Flying Saucers did Farmer Jeff Eats eat?

Let me wrap this up for you…

If you are in the mood for top notch soft serve and scooped ice cream- Carvel will definitely get the job done for you.

Although I have never physically counted them- Jeff Eats knows that there are loads of Carvel stores in South Florida. You can check carvel.com for locations/other info.

Finally,

While writing this “review” I’m thinking that Dairy Queen and Carvel are sort of like Coke and Pepsi- not so sure on how Jeff Eats would do in a “blind taste test.” What I do know is that Dennis the Menace was one of my favorite tv shows and I still love the comic strip. For those of you not “following”” the Dennis the Menace references- “GOGGLE TIME.”

* “Back To The 50’s” starring David ‘Elvis’ Morin, Joey Dale & The Gigolos, Spanky & Dino.

Let’s call this one, “Local Boys Make Good”…

Three of South Florida’s most popular casino/country club/festival/private event/lounge 50’s-60’s music-acts join forces tomorrow night, Sunday-February 26th (7pm) at the Township Center for Performing Arts- with great covers of legendary artists- Dion & The Belmonts, The Duprees, Elvis, The Crests, The Temptations, Jimmy Beaumont & The Skyliners, The Platters, just to name but a few!

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats got-tickets!

For you Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen types out there, before the show- Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats are probably gonna catch a couple of slices and some chicken parm at Barone’s La Pizzeria which is maybe 10 minutes away from the “theater”…

Call it crazy, but at least once a week -Jeff Eats gets asked among other things-to name his favorite south Florida Italian/pizza joints…very flattering -to think that so many of you guys actually believe that I know what I am talking about…

Anyway…

Way back on June 28, 2010- Jeff Eats “reviewed” Barone’s La Pizzeria…and I gotta tell you, that over the ensuing years, Barone’s has become one of Jeff Eats’ “go to joints.” Personally, I would match food/prices/service up-against the best “mom & pop” red sauce players in South Florida.

So…you now know where Jeff Eats goes when he is craving -outstanding New York Style pizza, amazing garlic knots, fabulous minestrone soup, delicious veal marsala—so forth and so on.

One final thought…Barone’s has been around for something like 40 years…that should tell you something!

The original (6/28/10) review is reprinted below.

***** Barone’s La Pizzeria, 5632 West Sample Road, Margate, Florida 33073 (954) 968-4396.
Barone’s La Pizzeria is a “Mom & Pop—red sauce” pizza joint located in Margate.
You can check its menu/prices at www.lapizzeriamargate.com.

You know and I know that “Mom & Pop” pizza joints are a dime a dozen-down here in old South Florida. I think the way it works…the strip center landlord first signs Publix, then Walgreens, then a Chinese takeout, then a pizza joint, then a dry cleaners…then a —-(you fill in the blanks)….then half of the businesses go bust…

Anyway, the other evening, I gave Barone’s La Pizzeria a shot- and I gotta tell you, the food is real-good. My party did pizza, shrimp scampi, veal parmigiana, meat lasagna, chicken & shrimp alfredo, penne ala vodka—and like I just said, real good.

As you know– over the past few years, old Jeff Eats has eaten-in his fair share of “mom & pop” Italian joints…and, to be perfectly honest with you, most of them barely get the job done, but then again, that’s the nature of the beast…”cheap is cheap”….”you get what you pay for”…”one if by land, 2 if by sea.” Trust me on this one, Barone’s La Pizzeria is REAL GOOD…if you live or work near the joint, I highly recommend that you give it a try.

By the way, Barone’s La Pizzeria is right across Sample Road from the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek and is maybe a 3-minute drive (west) from the Festival Flea Market on Sample Road.

Barone’s La Pizzeria is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-10pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm

Got a real-good sub joint for you guys, MacDaddy Sub Shop in Plantation.

Unless you just arrived on a spaceship from Mars, you know exactly what the ‘deal” at MacDaddy is- hot & cold large-small subs, wraps, salads- order & pickup at counter, handful of tables!

Jeff Eats and a couple of buddies did a recent lunch there and I gotta tell MacDaddy served up some real-delicious sandwiches! For those who need to know, the joint uses a real nice “soft” sub roll!

Jeff Eats is kinda thinking that some of you guys might like longer-more detailed “stories”- if that’s your game, I recommend War & Peace by Leo Tolstoy!

Jeff Eats really enjoyed MacDaddy Sub Shop which is open Monday-Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday 10am-4pm, closed Sunday.

Got a real good sports bar for you guys, Lucky’s Saloon in Homestead.

Last week, Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and our old friends (from our Brooklyn Days) Tom and Marie who live in the area-did dinner at Lucky’s Saloon- best described as a small, limited menu, neighborhood sports bar which serves up some real good reasonably priced appetizers, hot dogs, burgers, salads, sandwiches and wings! Just so you guys and Jeff Eats are on the same page, don’t let the limited menu “mention” scare you off or nothing, with the bet being- that you’ll find what to eat, but don’t be looking for no T-bone steaks or huge portions of veal parmigiana!

Now for the best part of the story, Tom picked-up the check!

Anyway, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats really enjoyed Lucky’s Saloon which by the way, has an events calendar that includes live music acts and karaoke nights!

The Three Tenors (who can’t sing) is a night of stand-up (and a sit down) with three made men of comedy. Having just finished a 27 city national tour in April of 2016, The Three Tenors is happy to be back the Box!

The Three Tenors (who can’t sing) stars Vic DiBitetto, now considered the Godfather of Comedy. DiBitetto has taken the internet by storm with over one hundred million views, multiple viral videos and his own television talk show. Vic has been touring the country selling out clubs and theaters along the way with his murderous brand of comedy that kills audiences.

Joining DiBitetto will be a rotating roster of hilarious headliners and special guests along the way!! Vic and his other Tenors will bring their incredible stand up and sit down comedy to the Box this February! It’s blue collar comedy in a red sauce!!

More about Vic DiBitetto… ‘The Italian Hurricane’

An incredibly powerful performer, comedian Vic DiBitetto churns energy, honesty and humanity into nonstop laughter. His pace is frenetic. His material vivid and true. He’s been called a cross between Rodney Dangerfield and Ralph Kramden. The bottom line is, DiBitetto leaves his audiences breathless with laughter.
Referred to by most other comics as a “killer”, it means you just can’t follow Vic onstage. And that has been uttered by many very famous stand-ups over the years.
Vic is currently:

Featured in Kevin James’ new movie Mall Cop: Blart 2 coming out in April 2015
Starring in Don’t Know Jack, a prime time Hulu Original scripted sit-com slated for Fall 2014
Writing and Producing his Ticked Off Vic segment for 95.5 WPLJ FM in New York City (reaches 3 million people) AND NJ101.5 FM in New Jersey (#1 radio station in NJ)
An Internet Sensation with over 22 million YouTube views and his now famous Bread and Milk and Justin Bieber viral rants
Featured, with other celebrities, in a video roll-in segment in the play Italian Bred coming to Broadway (Fall 2014)
Named the Grand Marshal for the NYPD Columbia Association in the 2014 Columbus Day Parade in NYC and will walk at the front with Mayor de Blasio and Police Commissioner Bratton.
One of the hottest Stand Up Comedians in the country

Vic has appeared on television’s America’s Funniest People (ABC) where he was a $10,000 Grand Prize winner as well as Stand-Up Spotlight (VH1) and Last Laugh at Pips and acted in a pilot with Woody Allen and Danny Aiello. In addition, he has warmed-up hundreds of audiences for hit shows such as Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and The Ricki Lake Show. Vic has performed at many of the nation’s best comedy venues such as New York City’s Dangerfield’s, Los Angeles’ Laugh Factory, Las Vegas’ Riviera Hotel, Resorts World Casino and Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel. His schedule is relentless and he is booked thru 2015 at every comedy venue imaginable in the New York Tri-State area. A Pay Per View special and major US Tour are in current discussions.

***** Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor, 128 South Federal Highway, Dania Beach , Florida 33004, (954) 023-4445.

Jaxson’s has been around something like 50 years. This is one of the greatest joints in all of South Florida, not to mention the United States, to get great home-made ice cream. The Food Channel has done several stories on Jaxson’s.

Decorated in Early American License Plate, Jaxson’s is located in a non-descript strip-shopping center in Dania Beach. The joint is packed day and night with people stuffing their faces with some of the most delicious ice cream that you have ever tasted. The portions are enormous and “individual” servings can feed 1-2-3 people. Jaxson’s also does, burgers, hot dogs, salads etc., but the game here is ICE CREAM. Personally, my favorite is a waffle with a scoop of strawberry and a scoop of mocha chip. That single dish, is big enough to serve 2-3 people. Be smart and don’t over order here, because (1) you will be wasting a ton of great ice cream and (2) you will be wasting a ton of money.

I am telling you that you absolutely positively want to try this joint. The ice cream and food are great…the atmosphere is terrific…the service is terrific…and the “penny candy” assortment at the front of the joint will have you reminiscing about 1950’s Brooklyn-Bronx-Queens (etc,).

There are always lines waiting to get in and for take-out. Jaxson’s is open 7-days a week…Monday-Thursday 11:30am-11pm…Friday-Saturday 11:30am- midnight…Sunday noon-11pm.
