A Recent Starbucks Conversation: Are You A Pilot? I Thought I Was…

* A Recent Starbucks Conversation: Are You A Pilot? I Thought I Was…

You think you have lived to be 80 plus and know who you are, then along comes someone and blows it all to hell!

An old Marine Pilot sat down at the Starbucks, still wearing his old USMC flight jacket and ordered a cup of coffee.

As he sat sipping his coffee, a young woman sat down next to him. She turned to the pilot and asked,
Are you a real pilot?

He replied, ‘Well, I’ve spent my whole life flying planes, first Stearmans, then the early Grummans… flew a Wildcat and Corsair in WWII, and later in the Korean conflict, Banshees and Cougars. I’ve taught more than 260 people to fly and given rides to hundreds, so I guess I am a pilot, and you, what are you?

She said, ‘I’m a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about naked women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about naked women. When I shower, I think about naked women. When I watch TV, I think about naked women. It seems everything makes me think of naked women.’

The two sat sipping in silence.

A little while later, a young man sat down on the other side of the old pilot and asked:
“Are you a real pilot?”

He replied, ‘I always thought I was, but I just found out I’m a lesbian.’

The New York Times compared Jake Ehrenreich to Billy Crystal and Bill Murray in its review of the actor-writer’s one-man musical comedy A Jew Grows in Brooklyn. Now, after its record-breaking run in the heart of Broadway and tours from L.A. to London, this uplifting biographical journey returns to the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. From growing up with parents who survived the Holocaust, to playing stickball in the streets of Brooklyn, to his show business career in the Catskills and on Broadway, to finding himself heartbroken at the bedsides of ailing family members, Ehrenreich chronicles his search for the American Dream with warmth, humor and optimism. Come find out why The New York Times called A Jew Grows in Brooklyn “dazzling.”

LOU VILLANO Performs The Hits Of Paul Anka Live Show

Lou Villano grew up in Brooklyn singing the songs of some of the most popular singers from the 50’s & 60’s – Paul Anka was one of his favorites. While Lou was arranging his shows he remembered how many of his audiences would comment that his resemblance and vocal styling is very similar to Paul Anka. They asked “Why don’t you do more songs by Paul Anka”? That’s when Lou acted upon their advice. Lou becomes Paul Anka performing his hits – Diana, Lonely Boy, The Longest Day, My Hometown, Puppy Love, Destiny and so much more. Within the show are songs Paul Anka wrote for singers like Buddy Holly, Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones plus hit songs from some of his fellow songwriters and friends Frankie Avalon & Bobby Rydell. Lou is receiving rave reviews and standing ovations from his audiences performing this show. It’s a show that you are going to remember as you walk out singing the songs that you loved so much by such a talented songwriter and singer.

“The Hits Of Paul Anka Live Show” is a MUST HAVE & SEE SHOW!

***** Jimmy The Greek Taverna, 8221 Glades Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33434, (561) 477-3272.

Very original name, don’t-cha think…Jimmy The Greek! That aside, this “mom & pop” Greek joint serves some really dynamte-reasonably priced stuff. You can check menu/prices at www.jimmythegreekrestaurant.com.

Over the past 3-weeks, I did 2- lunches and 1-dinner at Jimmy The Greek. Let’s just say, that the joint didn’t miss a beat–delicious gyros, pork souvlaki, char-broiled pork & lamb chops, Greek salad, moussaka, tilapia lemonato. Lots of food for the money…the most expensive “dinner” on the menu runs about 18 bucks.

If you like Greek stuff, I think that you will really enjoy Jimmy The Greek.

The joint is open 7 days a week 11am-9pm.

***** Red Cow, 1025 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304, (954) 652-1524.

A recent e-mail received by Jeff Eats.

Jeff,

I really love good barbecue. I know there are loads of styles, but I was wondering what’s one of your best picks in the Fort Lauderdale area?

Thank you very much,

Gene Kennedy (Woodstock, New York)

______

George Kennedy,

Not exactly sure what “type” (i.e. North Carolina, Memphis, North Carolina) of barbecue- you’re looking for…that said, Red Cow in Fort Lauderdale is one of “MY” absolute favorites. I love this joint’s food- not too smokey, just right!. Checkout the “story” Jeff Eats ran on January 4, 2015 which is printed down below. Also take a look at Red Cow’s website redcowftl.com for menu/prices/info.

Like I said at the top, I’m not exactly sure what type of barbecue you’re looking for- all I can tell you, is that Jeff Eats has eaten there a number of times- and each and every time the food killed! I might add, that I’ve taken a number of friends there to eat- and everybody loved the food! Now, I know there is nothing scientific about all of this- but I will tell you, most of my friends are major pain in the asses-so I’m kinda thinking that just maybe the food is pretty decent! But then again who knows?

If you end up trying Red Cow- careful on the ordering- the portions are enormous!

Thanks for reading…

***** Red Cow, 1025 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304, (954) 652-1524.

Last night Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple ate in a bbq-joint named Red Cow. Just this simple, some of the most delicious bbq-that I’ve eaten in a very long time.. By the way don’t quote me, but I’m thinking the joint has been open something like 18 months!

I’d be lying to you-if I actually tried to explain the bbq-“style” Red Cow uses…I know that I have kids who went to sleep away camp in Asheville, North Carolina… I’ve flown over Dallas at least 23 times and I recall having been to Atlanta, Georgia 7 times- but I’m just not qualified to tell you styles.

Anyway,

Like I said 2.3 seconds ago, some of the most delicious bbq-going! For sure, I can tell you that the stuff is definitely “smoked”- but not smoked where the smoke overwhelms everything. I can also tell you, that Red Cow “uses” dry rubs and 3- actually make that 4 types of bbq-sauce if you want to “customize” your bbq.

Let me tell you what Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple “tried”…but before I do, I just want you to know, that Red Cow’s portions are ENORMOUS- so when you go, figure on sharing “dishes”- you’ll “save” some cash and- just as important, get to try-all kinds of stuff.

The folks who own Red Cow know what they are doing, they have a menu that has a handful of appetizers and salads, a list of bbq entrees that literally allows you to mix and match what shows up, a load of sandwiches, sides and desserts. Before Jeff Eats gets to the “eating”…I wanted to mention that our waiter Garrett was amazing-good. He knew the menu cold, made great recommendations and made sure that the beer and soda glasses were never empty.

Last night our party of 4- had…iron skillet corn bread, chopped salad, beef ribs, baby back pork ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork, prime rib, rotisserie chicken, corn fritters, corn on the cob, cowboy mashed potatoes, jalapeno cheddar sausages, fried brussel sprouts, coleslaw, peanut butter/white chocolate tart with vanilla ice cream. Hey! I already told you that the portions were enormous and the joint lets you customize what shows up on your plate. Just so you don’t get scared- or nothing- the most expensive item on the menu the- Eat More Meat Combo runs 23 bucks and I’m telling you, it can easily feed 3 people (unless one of the 3 is my friend Bobby G. who clocks in around 287, wears a size 52 suit and claims to have some kinda gland problem).

Now, nothing for nothing- I tried everything…and of course- some stuff was better than some other stuff! I will tell you, that the chopped salad (shallot Dijon vinaigrette), beef brisket, prime rib, wagyu beef ribs, cowboy mashed potato and chicken were absolute dynamite and I do mean dynamite. Not to be too repetitive, everything we had was delicious, but the stuff I just mentioned- really caught my attention.

At this stage of the game you can check redcowftl.com for menu/prices/info.

Finally, real cool casual décor, full liquor bar, large tv screens, you can wear shorts/tee shirts/flip flops and the odds say-you’ll leave with a bag full of leftovers.

Red Cow is a winner. You definitely got to try this joint!

Red Cow is open Monday-Saturday 11:30am-10pm, Sunday for brunch 9:30am-1:30pm and then 1:30pm-9pm.

***** Howard’s Market, 6060 Southwest 18th Street, Boca Raton, Florida 33433 (561) 392-2422.

Way-back-when in 2009– I told you guys about “gourmet markets” like The Boys Farmers Market (Delray Beach 5/16/09), Doris Italian Market (Boca Raton 5/21/09) and Joseph’s Classic (Boca Raton 6/22/09)…these are joints are where you shop when you want fruits, vegetables, baked goods, prepared foods…better than the stuff that Publix is pushing. Mind you, they aren’t full supermarkets…but they do serve a very valuable purpose when you are craving fresh tangerine-grapefruit-orange juice, or semi-homemade chicken cacciatore on the bone.

Anyway…Howard’s Market is a “gourmet market”…very similar to the others listed. This joint has been around for something like 25 years…is 10,000 square feet and has the full-boat of cheeses, wines, cakes, seafood, meat, prepared foods. Reasonable prices!

You can check Howard’s website www.howardsmarket.com for details.

Howard’s is open Monday-Friday 7am-10pm, Saturday 8am-9pm, Sunday 8am-8pm.

Turnstiles- The Ultimate Tribute To The Music Of Billy Joel (Boca Black Box- Boca Raton)

This article first appeared on 11/12/16. Jeff Eats just checked the Boca Black Box- box-office (bocablackbox.com) and goldstar.com (discount tickets) and there are a handful of tickets left for Turnstiles’ Friday-12/16/16 show! I just picked-up 4 discount tickets on goldstar.com and I’m thinking SRO is in the cards for Friday night! The suggestion here, if you wanna go, it’s definitely time to make your move on the ticket-front!

Posted on November 12th, 2016
* Turnstiles- The Ultimate Tribute To The Music Of Billy Joel.

If you guys can keep a little secret, Jeff Eats remembers Turnstiles beginnings…back then, just a few short years ago, when Tony the band’s “Billy” (who at the time was the keyboard player of the Shakedown Band) mentioned to me-his plans for a South Florida based Billy Joel tribute band!

Long story short, today- Turnstiles is one of America’s best Billy Joel tribute bands! The band plays all over the United States, usually to Standing Room Only crowds!

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have seen Turnstiles something like 5 times and all I can tell you is…

If you’re a Billy Joel fan, you gotta go see Turnstiles!

The Skinny:

After years of performing with various original projects and cover bands, Tony decided to form “Stormfront”, his first Billy Joel tribute back in 1993. While Stormfront played to critical aclaim in the New York Area, their career was cut short when Tony decided to relocate to South Florida. Now, some 15 years later, Tony decided to enlist some of the finest musicians in South Florida to join with him to once again pay tribute to the man he has so much respect and admiration for, Billy Joel. Never intending to be an impersonator, his focus instead is simply on the music and delivering a faithful and completely live Billy Joel experience to share with others. Turnstiles’ renditions of Billy’s classic songs are certain to move the casual listener as well as the hard core “Joel fan” to their feet and have them singing along with all the classics!
