Before they were The Lords of 52nd Street, you could find them playing at local clubs in Long Island under the band name, “Topper.” Topper was a 1960s high school rock and roll band originally formed by, Russell Javors on guitar and vocals, Doug Stegmeyer on bass, and Liberty DeVitto on drums. The band was drawing a large audience at the time, but bassist Doug Stegmeyer quickly flew out to California to audition for the “Piano Man,” Mr. Billy Joel.

Joel was looking to form a new band that will record and tour with him regularly. Stegmeyer was immediately accepted into the Billy Joel Band, and Joel asked if Stegmeyer knew any other players, specifically a New York style drummer. Stegmeyer told Joel, “You know them,” and recommended his Topper bandmates, Russell Javors and Liberty DeVitto, for the part. DeVitto frequently played gigs with Joel’s high school band “The Hassles” at Plainview’s My House. To say the least, Joel and DeVitto were not foreign to each other’s playing. No one ever expected these musicians would cross paths again, and help form one of pop music’s most famous bands.

Doug Stegmeyer, Liberty DeVitto and Russell Javors joined Billy Joel in studio to record his 1976 album “Turnstiles.” Billy Joel was also looking specifically for a saxophone player who can play keyboards. Al Stegmeyer, Doug Stegmeyer’s father, was a sound engineer on the album, and recommended Richie Cannata to play saxophone and keyboards on the album. Cannata walked into Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead, New York, and heard for the first time the legendary hit, “Angry Young Man.”

Joel, Stegmeyer, DeVitto and Javors recorded the tune a day earlier, and Cannata was blown away by their experienced playing and speed. Cannata went into the studio and immediately recorded the unforgettable Empire State love song, “New York State of Mind.” What made the music on this album so special, were the dedicated and loyal New York musicians behind its creation.

The Turnstiles album was a huge success because Joel and his new recording and touring band performed the songs with such a fresh, and young driven beat. DeVitto, Javors and Cannata blew away audiences with their playing, and helped Joel sell millions of albums. The band went from playing local colleges and universities across the nation to performing at the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden.

After the success of the Turnstiles album, Joel and the band began looking for a music producer for their next album. George Martin, the legendary Beatles record producer, offered Billy Joel a record deal, but he informed Joel he wanted to record with studio musicians. Joel would not create this new album without The Lords of 52nd Street, so he told Martin, “Love me. Love my band.” Joel turned down The Beatles’ record producer, George Martin, and was pleased to work with the legendary, Phil Ramone.

Phil Ramone and Joel coined DeVitto, Cannata, Javors and Stegmeyer as The Lords of 52nd Street, and went into Columbia Studios to record, “The Stranger.” The album was a commercial success, it holds a RIAA diamond certification (10x platinum), and several #1 singles including, Only The Good Die Young and Just The Way You Are. The Lords of 52nd Street, along side the Piano Man, led an international tour, and performed at famous arenas including, Wembley Stadium, Royal Albert Hall, the Sydney Opera House, Nassau Coliseum, Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall, Budokan, the LA Forum and many others.

The band also performed on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” and on the BBC’s “The Old Grey Whistle Test” television program back in 1978. The Lords of 52nd Street helped Joel establish a popular music career, and the opportunity to perform and record in the most prestigious settings.

Joel and The Lords of 52nd Street returned to the studio, and recorded Grammy award winning albums including, 52nd Street, Glass Houses, and The Nylon Curtain. The band recorded and toured with Joel for over a decade, and it wasn’t until their induction into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame where they decided to reunite after a 30-year separation. After their 2014 hall of fame induction, The Lords of 52nd Street picked up their instruments yet again, and began performing in front of live audiences together.

The Lords finally returned to the stage to a sold out crowd at The Space at Westbury in February 2016. Critics adored the band, and their performance blew away fans of all ages. The Lords of 52nd Street are touring regularly since their return in early 2016, and they do not plan on stopping anytime soon. Fans declared that The Lords’ live performances sound just like the original recordings with Billy Joel, if not better. The Lords of 52nd Street perform regularly for live audiences in public and private events, and continue to awe fans from around the world.

They are New York’s favorite band, they sold more than 150 million records, they helped establish Billy Joel’s formidable sound, and they continue to perform their legendary hits still to this day. Look no further; The Lords of 52nd Street are here!

***** BurgerFi, 4343 North Ocean Drive, Lauderdale by the Sea 33308, (954) 489-0110.

Walked into this free-standing “fast food” burger joint last Saturday night—and immediately new that I was going to love it. The easiest way to describe BurgerFi–Shake Shack (see 8/1/10 review) meets Five Guys Famous Burgers (see 11/2/06 review) with indoor and outdoor “picnic table seating.”

Let me make this real simple…one of the best fast-food cheeseburgers and hand cut fries that I’ve had in a very long time.

At this stage of the proceedings, check www.burgerfi.com for menu/prices/photos.

I am telling you, if burgers and fries are your game, you are absolutely gonna love this joint.

As a 1949 “baby” I think I know a thing or two about the fast-food-burger industry. Trust me on this, old Jeff Eats has eaten his fair share of burgers and fries.

I think I know exactly what BurgerFi is “trying” to do here…The joint’s decor looks like a roadside fast-food burger joint circa 1950’s/1960’s with some-modern touches…throw in “gourmet” burgers and “upscale” fries-other stuff…and BurgerFi’s got all of the bases covered. It’s cooler looking than Five Guys but cheaper than the “upscale” full service-burger restaurants that are currently America’s latest craze.

Check Burgerfi’s site, there are a handful of pictures which will give you some idea as to what I am yapping about here.

Like I said before, if you like burgers, fries, hot dogs, custard…you’ll love this joint.

BurgerFi is open 7 days a week 11am-1am.

Vesuvio Pizza & Panini (Kendall-Miami)

***** Vesuvio Pizza & Panini, 13081 Southwest 88th Street, Miami, Florida 33186, (305) 385-4441.

Got a real good “take-out” pizza joint for you guys, Vesuvio Pizza & Panini in Miami.

Real simple concept going on at Vesuvio, hole in the wall/ order-pickup at the counter/ appetizers- salads- sandwiches-wraps -pizzas- pastas- calzones- stromboli- entrees/ if you insist on “dining” there, handful of indoor counter seats- handful of outdoor benches.

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeffs recently “benched it” and I gotta tell you that Vesuvio’s cheese pepperoni pizza, garlic rolls and philly cheese steak sub absolutely killed! For the interested- the pizza was thin/crispy/sweet sauce/loads of cheese & pepperoni, the garlic knots were soft and hot with the perfect combo of oil and garlic and the steak/ onions/ peppers/ cheese sub was perfectly seasoned and housed in a real nice soft roll! By the way, Jeff Eats knows what he likes and what he doesn’t like- I’m also smart enough to know that you guys got your own “taste”- so we may agree or disagree on what’s good and what sucks! The point, I’ll tell you guys what I think, but I know that you also know- and that this Jeff Eats’ “gig” is a two sided street!

Like I said 3 seconds ago, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats really enjoyed Vesuvio Pizza & Panini and if you know anything about cheese pepperoni pizza, garlic knots and philly cheese steak subs- you will too!😋

You can check menu/prices/info at vesuviomiami.com.

Vesuvio Pizza & Panini is open Tuesday-Thursday 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM, Friday-Saturday
11:00 AM – 11:00 PM, Sunday noon- 10:00 PM, closed Monday.

The other day Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and a couple of Mrs. Jeff Eats’ girlfriends- did a late lunch at a terrific sub joint- Totally Awesome Subs in Greenacres.

Trust Jeff Eats on this one, if it wasn’t so damn corny- I’d tell you that this order-pickup at counter/handful of tables/full boat of reasonably small-large hot-cold subs, salads joint that’s open Monday-Saturday 10:30am-7pm, Sunday 11am-5pm makes totally awesome subs, so I won’t!

No bs here- Totally Awesome Subs’ subs and salads are -totally awesome, but you didn’t hear that from me!

You live, you visit, you work in Totally Awesome Subs’ neighborhood- you got to try this joint!

If- like Jeff Eats you are a fan of the “mom & pop” diner-concept- I got an absolutely terrific diner for you…Doc’s Diner in Key Largo. By the way, I first told you guys about Doc’s way-back on 6/18/12- but somethings really do-bear repeating!

No reason to spin you guys a detailed tale…tons of breakfast stuff, burgers, salads, sandwiches, salads, entrees, desserts. Counter/table-booth seating, open 7 days a week 6am-2pm.

A recent breakfast outing had Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats doing…banana pancakes and strawberry French toast- and I must-say- both were off the hook! Throw in super pleasant service, reasonable prices (which you can check at docsdinerkeylargo.com) and you got a dynamite joint for breakfast and lunch.

Jeff Eats loved Doc’s- and unless there is something seriously wrong with you- you will too!

Next time you are “down” in Key Largo…give “mom & pop” diner-Doc’s Diner a shot.

First things first, yes–the name “got” me in the door…and yes, before I even walked in the door, I knew in my mind’s eye as to exactly what the joint and its menu would look like. AND. my money says you to would “know”…but if I’m wrong-check www.docsdinerkeylargo.com for menu/prices/pictures. Counter/booth “formica” seating. Open 7 days a week 6am-2pm. Loads of breakfast stuff, sandwiches, burgers, salads, daily meat/chicken seafood specials, desserts.

Second things second, did breakfast at Doc’s Diner…real simple…scrambled eggs with bacon/home fries, pancakes, french toast, coffee. Exactly what I expected, good solid food, super pleasant waitress, about 7 bucks a head (with tip)–For sure, your neighborhood “Doc’s” got a different name–maybe it’s Joe’s, Tom Sawyer’s, Peter Pan, Johnny’s…but give or take—they are all the same, that-go-to local breakfast/lunch joint where you really enjoy eating “dolled up” in your tee shirt/shorts/flip flops ensemble.

All I know, is that–Madison Avenue has got it all wrong…America runs on the “DOC’S” of this world-not Dunkin’ Donuts.

The game- the first 20 “reader-comments” received – will be entered in a “blind hat pick”! You can submit as many comments as you’d like but- Please, only 1- reader comment – per day…play fair!

The $25 Gift Card is good at any Carvel location (carvel.com for locations, menu, info).

Posted on September 7th, 2014
***** Carvel, 9176 Glades Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33431, (561) 394-0411.

Jeff Eats is gonna take a shot here- I’m thinking that you guys know what Carvel is…if you don’t, it’s “Google Time.” By the way, if you have to Google- while you’re researching also checkout the term Flying Saucer!

Anyway,

For the record, down here in South Florida its-always been a very close toss-up for me between Carvel and Dairy Queen and I do mean REALCLOSE. Just in case we go on The Newlywed Game tv-show together, Dairy Queen is the pick, but like I just said 2 seconds ago it’s real close.

Anyway,

Last night around 8:15pm I picked up 2 six packs of Vanilla/Chocolate Flying Saucers ($10.59) and by 8:56pm there were only 7 left. Now, you mathematicians out there can solve the equation- If Mrs. Jeff Eats ate 1 Flying Saucer, how many Flying Saucers did Farmer Jeff Eats eat?

Let me wrap this up for you…

If you are in the mood for top notch soft serve and scooped ice cream- Carvel will definitely get the job done for you.

Although I have never physically counted them- Jeff Eats knows that there are loads of Carvel stores in South Florida. You can check carvel.com for locations/other info.

Finally,

While writing this “review” I’m thinking that Dairy Queen and Carvel are sort of like Coke and Pepsi- not so sure on how Jeff Eats would do in a “blind taste test.” What I do know is that Dennis the Menace was one of my favorite tv shows and I still love the comic strip. For those of you not “following”” the Dennis the Menace references- “GOGGLE TIME.”
