***** FOODBEAST *****

Jeff Eats recently came across a really cool website FOODBEAST—www.foodbeast.com

The site “describes” itself as:

“FOODBEAST is the premiere food news resource. A one-stop location for food news, culture and entertainment. Birthed from a small apartment in Orange County, with the goal of providing a clean display of current food trends, products and industry information. Written by and for the average eater.”

FOODBEAST will keep you plenty busy–with tons of articles/photos about restaurants and other food “things.”

***** Shula Burger *****

image

***** Shula Burger *****

Let’s do this one together…
In recent months- Jeff Eats has been “watching” Shula Burger being built at the Delray Marketplace in Delray Beach….this burger chain is “fronted” by Don Shula who was the Miami Dolphins’ quarterback in 1970-1973…strike that, Bob Griese and Earl Morrall were the quarterbacks and Shula was the head coach.
Anyway…
This guy Shula- who incidentally was born on Januray 30, 1930 currently has his name on a “ton” of different restaurants here in South Florida and around the USA. In addition to the aforementioned (the lawyer in me) Shula Burger, Shula is involved with Shula’s Steak House, Shula’s 2, Shula’s 347 Grill, Shula’s Bar & Grill and Shula’s On The Beach. For the researchers out there, you can check www.shula.com for details/menus/locations about the Shula restaurant empire.
Now back to Shula Burger which currently has 4 locations…Tampa, Kendall- Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Islamorada-Florida Keys…and a new location scheduled to open on June 10, 2013 in the Delray Marketplace, Delray Beach, Florida..
Now nothing for nothing…although Shula Burger has 4 locations, Jeff Eats has never eaten in one, nor met anyone who has eaten in one, nor met anyone who has talked about plans to eat in one.
Now to the point…
This afternoon, I stopped by the Delray Marketplace and took a close look at the physical layout of the almost finished restaurant. It’s– a you order at the counter/they bring it to the table deal. The store looks absolutely dynamite with inside and outdoor patio seating. The menu features burgers with all kinds of toppings, fries, hot dogs, salads, shakes, beer & wine. Take a look at www.shulaburger.com for menu/prices/locations/photos–this way you’ll know what Jeff Eats considers a dynamite-look, because you may not—different strokes for different folks!
Anyway…here’s the plan.
1. For those of you who have already eaten in a Shula Burger, please give Jeff Eats the skinny on it (before June 10, 2013 would be nice).
2. Jeff Eats is gonna try #5 right after it opens.
3. For those of you who haven’t eaten at a Shula Burger, either eat at one of the first-4 or try #5 right after it opens on June 10, 2013.
4. We all meet back here on June 15, 2013 to compare notes.
And…should you be captured, Jeff Eats will deny any knowledge of this mission.
One final note…since Coach Shula will soon be celebrating his 84th birthday to give you some perspective, I thought you guys would like to know that the first White Castle opened in 1921, the first MacDonald’s opened in 1940, the first Burger King opened in 1954, the first Sonic Drive-In opened in 1953, the first In-N-Out opened in 1948 and the first Wendy’s opened in 1969…and you thought that Jeff Eats was just another pretty face.

***** Update-June 14, 2013 *****

The new Shula Burger in the Delray Marketplace opened for business on June 10, 2013. Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats gave it a “shot” last night (6/13/13).

As Jeff Eats’ “original” article indicated- the joint is a very handsome-modern looking fast-food restaurant…there is both inside and outdoor patio seating. You order at the counter/servers bring the food to your table.

Shula’s menu is loaded with burgers/toppings, a couple of sandwiches, a hot dog, a handful of salads, shakes, a handful of sides, beer/wine. You can check menu/prices at www.shulaburger.com

The skinny—Jeff Eats had a Shula Burger ($6.49-American cheese/shaved lettuce/tomato/pickle)—Mrs. Jeff Eats had a turkey burger ($7.99-turkey patty/baby greens/tomato/red onion/herb mayo)…we shared an order of French fries ($2.49), sweet potato tots ($3.99), onion rings ($4.29)…every item was real good/timely-delivered/hot.

Let me wrap this one up for you this way…

Shula Burger can definitely hold its own against most of South Florida’s fast-food burger players (not going to list them, but you guys know who they are). For sure, Jeff Eats thought that $4.29 for 3 onion rings was a bit to pricey–but then again-Shula’s French fries ran circles around the crinkle cut fries that Jeff Eats recently had at Shake Shack’s Boca Raton outpost. Look! I could sit here all-day and nit-pick things about every player in this space…suffice it to say, I would definitely eat at Shula Burger in the Delray Marketplace-again.

Nothing for nothing…

Since this is a Jeff Eats “story” you do “know” that my inner-self is saying…”Hey Jeff Eats, the Delray Marketplace is going to be a fiasco-white elephant, can Shula Burger really make-it there? To my inner-self… For right now, let’s leave it- that if things are based solely on food, Shula Burger should be just fine!

***** Cory Kahaney *****

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats recently “caught” comedian Cory Kahaney’s act…and I gotta tell you, this lady–is as funny and clever as can be.

You guys do know that Jeff Eats has an eye-for-talent, don’tcha?…after-all, back in 1973 at New York’s Improv–he spotted newcomers Freddie Prinze, JJ Walker, Andy Kaufman, Steve Landsberg and Al Franken and predicted that they would all become huge stars–and in Franken’s case, a United States Senator to boot.

In all seriousness, check Kahaney’s website www.corykahney.com—for videos/schedule.

From what I understand, Kahaney is currently being booked for a number of 2013-2014 South Florida condo/country club/theatre dates.

If you enjoy laughing your head-off, make it your business to catch Cory Kahaney the next time she’s down here in sunny South Florida.

* FAKES vs. FAKES *

Jeff Eats got a real good one for you this morning…

Beatles tribute band–“Rain A Tribute To The Beatles” is suing its co-producer for bringing another Beatles tribute band “Let It Be” to Broadway this coming July. Here’s the beautiful part…Rain in its federal lawsuit claims that Let It Be infringes on Rain’s copyright which is the life’s work of musicians Mark Lewis, Joe Curatolo, Ralph Castelli and Joe Bithorn.

For what it’s worth, Jeff Eats has seen the Rain-show and all these 4 guys do is impersonate John, Paul, John and Ringo—singing, talking, dressing like The Beatles. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ORIGINAL GOING ON IN THEIR SHOW except the guy “playing” Paul is a righty and the real-Paul is a lefty. Trust me on this one, the guy trying to be Paul isn’t trying to be different he just can’t play the bass left handed.

FAKES vs. FAKES…is there no honesty among thieves?

Or as The Beatles once said…HELP!

HBO is currently airing a movie named–Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter…”President Abraham Lincoln moonlights as a vampire hunter after learning that his mother was killed by bloodsuckers in this wildly fun supernatural action thriller adapted from the genre-bending novel.”

So let Jeff Eats get this straight…Abraham Lincoln, arguably America’s greatest president—was also a vampire hunter!

You do what you want with this one.

* MARDI GRAS CASINO DOES 60’s *

Most of you guys know that Jeff Eats is a huge fan of 1950s-1960s Rock N Roll.

During the past 20 or so years that I’ve been down here in South Florida, I have seen a huge number of 50s-60s recording acts and oldies tribute/cover bands. The list of recording acts is virtually “endless” with The Turtles, The Zombies, The Crystals, The Duprees, The Contours, Joey Dee & The Starliters, The Shirelles, The Beach Boys, The Drifters, The Critters, being on it—and for sure, Jeff Eats has never met a 50s-60s band/act that he didn’t like. Some are better than others—but give or take a very rare one, they all get the job done. While I’m on the subject of “top notch” South Florida 50s-60s cover bands Whitestone–Viva Classic Rock N Roll Band–The Shindigs–The Fabulons–Orange Sunshine–Rocky & The Rollers immediately come to mind. On top notch South Florida 50s & 60s “track” groups, Joey Dale & Gigolos, Brylcream, Sha-Boom, Lola & The Saints and Amanda & the Earth Angels are 5 of the best.

Now to the point…

Jeff Eats wants to give you guys who like this kind of stuff–a heads up!

From what I understand, the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach is “now” setting its sights on the “60’s rock n roll crowd”—last Tuesday night, the Mardi Gras had- The Lovin’ Spoonful and earlier today-announced a 2013 concert calendar that includes–The Grass Roots, Jay & The Americans, The Manhattans, The Association, The Atlanta Rhythm Section and The Marshall Tucker Band.

The next scheduled concert is Tuesday Night, June 18th at 8pm—The legendary group The Grass Roots will be performing…and for what it’s worth—Jeff Eats has seen the current Grass Roots’ lineup twice in concert and I am telling you that they are absolutely amazing–right up there with the best “60’s” acts working in America today. The group- which had such hits as “Midnight Confessions” and “Where Were You When I Need You” has sold millions of records and in their hey-day, was on the Billboard charts for something like 307 consecutive weeks—Tickets go on sale May 24, 2013.

You can check www.mardigrascasinofl.com for concert schedule/to buy tickets. Mardi Gras Casino’s phone number: (954) 924-3000.

Spadini’s Pizzeria (Boca Raton)

***** Spadini’s Pizzeria (Boca Raton)

Early this morning, Jeff Eats told you guys about Spadini’s Pizzeria, 134 Northeast 2nd Avenue, Boca Raton, Florida 33432, (561) 826-7420. The jist of that “article” was that Jeff Eats had heard terrific things about this relatively -new pizza joint (it opened in February 2013) and had “plans” to give it a shot in the near future. That original article is down below.

To make a long story short…

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats decided to take food out tonight.

Items ordered… chopped salad (large $9.50), 16″ plain pizza (Wednesday Night Special $8), chicken parmigiana hero ($9.95), sausage & peppers hero ($8.95), penne alla vodka ($11.95)…and I gotta tell you, everything we had was delicious. A special shoutout to the pizza—let’s just say, that Spadini’s knows how to make a real New York Slice—thin crust, delicious sweet sauce, great tasting mozzarella. By the way, the heroes were big enough to feed two people–and featured a really tasty-lightly toasted bread.

Spadini’s Pizzeria is an absolute “hole in the wall”—a few tables inside and even fewer outside. You order at the counter/you pickup at the counter.

Based on the food that Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “had”—Spadini’s is right up there with the best “mom & pop” red sauce joints in sunny South Florida.

You can check menu/prices at www.spadinispizzeria.com.

Finally, Spadini’s has a whole bunch of “specials”—like $8- 16″ pizzas on Wednesday and buy 2 heroes and get 1 free on Monday…so “ASK” what “deals” are on the table-before you order…Capice!

*****

Nothing for nothing…

Jeff Eats is hearing amazingly-fabulous-incredible “things” about a relatively new Boca Raton pizza joint…Spadini’s Pizzeria.

Just so we are straight with each other, Jeff Eats hasn’t gotten to the joint yet, but at least 7-maybe 11 or maybe it was 13 people (who have eaten there) told me that this “hole-in-the wall” turns out some of the best New York Style pizza/subs/other stuff that they have had- since migrating down here from Brooklyn, New York– Montclair, New Jersey–Hartford, Connecticut– Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania– Cortland, New York–Chicago, Illinois.

Being a top notch “reporter”- this morning Jeff Eats called Spadini’s Pizzeria and spoke to its owner 31 year old Thomas Sellick. Sellick told me that he has lived in South Florida for about a year and prior to coming down- he learned his “craft” working in his family’s Northport, New York (for those who don’t know, that’s part of Long Island) pizza joints. He told me that he opened for business on February 7, 2013—just so you know, Sellick bought out Mizner Plaza Pizza (reviewed 11/28/12), 134 Northeast 2nd Avenue, Boca Raton… did a drop of cosmetic surgery—and with new recipes and menus in hand re-opened as Spadini’s Pizzeria. Sellick told me that he has the same seating as Mizner Plaza had-that being a handful of tables inside and a handful outside. He also said-the joint works on an “order at the counter/pickup at the counter” system–but if you “want” he or one of his “guys” will bring the food over to your table.

Anyway…

Like I said, Jeff Eats is hearing terrific things about Spadini’s Pizzeria. If you get there before I do, I’d apprecaite hearing your thoughts.

You can check Spadini’s website www.spadinispizzeria.com for menu/prices/photos/other stuff.

Spadini’s Pizzeria, 134 Northeast 2nd Avenue, Boca Raton, Florida 33432, (561) 826-7123—is open Monday-Saturday 11am-11pm, Sunday noon-9pm.

The 64,000 Dollar Question:
Are the opinions of the folks from Montclair, Hartford, Pittsburgh, Cortland and Chicago-to be trusted on what consitutes top-notch New York Style pizza? We “know” that the Brooklyn folks are qualified, but-the others?—Jeff Eats is just asking!

***** SUNPASS FOR DISNEY WORLD *****

Before we get going here…this little “diddy” really has nothing to do with Florida’s Sunpass.

Anyway…

This morning I read a very interesting article in the “New York Post”… ‘Disney $leazy Riders–Rich kid fast track’–

The jist of the story is that some guy in Celebration, Florida has a company name Dream Tours (www.dreamtoursflorida.com) that will “supply” a handicapped person in a wheelchair to a party of up to 6 people at the rate of $130 per hour…during their visit to Disney World. The article said that Disney World has special auxiliary entrances to rides/shows for the wheelchaired person and up to 6 of his/her guests—thus avoiding long lines/wait times. The article also said that Disney World has its own service called Disney World’s VIP Tours which charges hotel guests $315 per hour/non hotel guests $340 per hour–for a personal guide who will “guide” up to 10 visitors through the various parks cutting wait times at rides/shows.

So…you guys now know TWO ways to shorten your Disney World wait times.

*** The Lovin’ Spoonful @ Mardi Gras Casino

Tomorrow night, Tuesday–May 14, 2013 at 8pm one of the 60’s legendary bands- THE LOVIN’ SPOONFUL- is going to be making an “out door” appearance at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach…tickets are $10, $15, $25. You can buy tickets online at www.mardigrascasinofl.com. By the way, ticketholders (special offer) can enjoy the casino’s French Quarter’s buffet $14.95 for $10.95. For those of you who haven’t been to the Mardi Gras Casino–it’s located at 831 North Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach…For more info give Mardi Gras Casino a call at (954) 924-3200.

You guys do- know that Jeff Eats is kinda like an “expert” on 50s-60s Rock N Roll…and I’m telling you that The Lovin’ Spoonful who had such mega hits as “Do You Believe In Magic” and “Summer In The City” were/and still are one of the greatest bands to ever grace a concert hall’s stage. Now for sure, legendary frontman John Sebastian is no longer with them…but the current lineup featuring original members/Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame members- Joe Butler and Steve Boone will definitely have the crowd “tripping” back in time…Jeff Eats recently saw “this” group and I am telling you, they are absolute dynamite.

If you are a fan of 60s Rock N Roll music, don’t pass-up the opportunity to see The Lovin’ Spoonful.

You do know that- The Spoonful and many of “us” aren’t getting any younger…

For you researchers out there…The Lovin’ Spoonful’s website www.lovinspoonful.com got all kinds of info/pictures/schedules/stuff- about the group.

Finally, in reviewing the Mardi Gras Casino’s website Jeff Eats notes–that prior to the concert (6pm-7pm) there will be a “60’s Costume Contest” with the winner taking home $1,000 and 2nd place catching $500–all contestants get $20 in Bonus Play (registration ended May 12th)—-sounds like the entire evening is going to be a retro-blast. Just so you know, a few years back Jeff Eats attended the Mardi Gras’ “70’s Disco Costume Contest” and had a great time watching the costumed contestants disco-dance to covers by The Shindigs Band.

Just a bet (pun intended)—tomorrow night is going to be awesome fun!

***** May 15, 2013 Update….

Last night Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats saw The Lovin’ Spoonful in action at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach…and I gotta tell you, the band put on a fabulous show.

For those of you who didn’t get there, this was an outdoor concert…seats were $10, $15, $25. Rather than going into minute-detail, this is basically a “first come” seating deal—some of the seats were on the lower level of the dog-track and others were in the grandstand. Jeff Eats’ cataract corrected eyes “told” him that there were about 800 people in the audience—and EVERY SEAT WAS GOOD.

The band took to the stage at 7:58pm and played for something like an hour/fifteen minutes. They played every one of their hits and also did covers of The Association’s “Never My Love”–The Byrds’ “Mr. Tamborine Man”–The Left Banke’s “Walk Away Renee”…despite the fact that original lead singer- John Sebastian is no longer with the group—original members Joe Butler and Steve Boone and “almost” original Jim Yester (the group started in 1965-he joined them in 1967) did exceptionally credible versions of the songs and had the crowd rock n rolling…the highlight of the evening was when the entire crowd -got to its feet as the band played “Do You Believe In Magic”….following the show, there was a “Meet & Greet” with the band–and I must tell you–the band members are some of the most engaging guys you’ll ever meet. They signed everything, literally answered every question and took countless pictures. The Mardi Gras’ staff did a great job–producing/running this event.

Jeff Eats and Mrs Jeff Eats “took” a look at the $10.95 special-discount buffet that was-offered to concert goers…We didn’t have “time” to try “it”—one of these days Jeff Eats will get you guys a review on the French Quarter’s buffet. I will tell you– Jeff Eats did see a number of concert-goers heading into the buffet right after the show ended. You wise-guys out there may right about now be saying… Hey Jeff, how did you know those heading into the buffet had been to the concert? To you, Jeff Eats says…because they were still wearing the purple wrist bands that they needed to get into the concert, so there!

Let me wrap this up…Terrific weather (in the low 70s), great seating, terrific band—a perfect night out.
