Smoke BBQ (Delray Beach)

* Smoke BBQ.

About 33 minutes ago my buddy Alan called and left a voice-mail about Smoke BBQ -a new bbq-sports bar that he had eaten in last night…in a nutshell, he raved about how good the joint was!

About 56 minutes ago Jeff Eats received a “pr-piece” email about Smoke BBQ.

Other than Alan’s message and the pr-piece, Jeff Eats has no “other” info-on this bbq joint.

Thought you guys might like a heads-up about what appears to be Delray Beach’s newest restaurant opening.

If you guys get there before I do, please give us some thoughts.

The pr-piece is printed below.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BBQ OPENS IN DELRAY
SMOKE BBQ Showcases Two-Time American Royal Grand Champion Pitmaster, Bryan Tyrell

Delray Beach, FL (September 15, 2014)—Smoke BBQ (eatbbqnow.com), formerly known as Union, has just opened at 8 East Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach. The new concept will feature authentic Kansas City style, smokehouse BBQ — low and slow smoked meats, including burnt ends. They will also feature Carolina pulled pork, affordable entrée selections, a cool, casual ‘American backyard’ design, a large craft beer selection, exceptional Happy Hour promotions, and a Pitmaster whose BBQ credentials are world-renowned. SMOKE BBQ is owned by local restaurateurs, Stephen Chin and Scott Kennedy.

Executive Chef and Pitmaster Bryan Tyrell is formerly of the famed Oklahoma Joe’s in Kansas City, Mo. (Anthony Bourdain named it “One of the 13 places to eat before you die”); and Bodean’s BBQ in London. Tyrell is an original member of Kansas City’s Slaughterhouse Five, and is a member of the two-time American Royal Grand Champion team in the World Series of BBQ.

“Bryan Tyrell is not only the most experienced and successful competitive BBQ Pitmaster living in South Florida, but likely the entire state,” said Kennedy. “We’re thrilled he has brought his award-winning talents to Atlantic Avenue.”

SMOKE BBQ will feature 15-hour oak smoked beef brisket, spare ribs, chicken, turkey and pulled pork, smoked each day using dry rubs. The restaurant will also offer Kansas City classic burnt ends on Wednesdays (while they last.) Additionally, SMOKE BBQ will have fresh fish and vegetarian options. Cocktails will be made with quality purees and house-made simple syrups—all at affordable prices.

Bryan Tyrell began his love affair with barbeque when former college roommate, Jeff Stehney, introduced him to the world of competitive BBQ in the late 1980’s. In 1990, Bryan became a member of Slaughterhouse Five, a competitive BBQ team. Slaughterhouse Five went on to be one of the most successful competitive BBQ teams in the U.S., winning the 1993 American Royal – Open Division and 1995 American Royal – Invitational Division–long considered the World Championship of BBQ.

“For me, smoking meat is a passion and an art form. Good barbecue is a feeling; it’s a touch, a feel, a taste, and understanding that has been earned from years of experience. My philosophy is, why do something if it’s not going to be great?” Tyrell said.

SMOKE BBQ will be open 6 days a week (closing on Tuesdays). Happy Hour will continue in its former Union tradition, with the best deals on the Ave. Happy Hours are: Mondays, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday hours 5-7 pm; Fridays 5-8 pm; and Sundays all day. On premises corporate BBQ events and catering are also available. Delivery Dudes will be the preferred delivery option.

SMOKE BBQ has the largest screen in a restaurant in Palm Beach County, and two additional oversized projections screens to watch college games on Saturdays and NFL games on Sundays. The restaurant will feature live music several nights a week. The kitchen will close at 10:00 p.m. for late night dancing. Food will be available until 1:45 a.m. with a late night snack menu.

For more information, call 561-330-4236 or visit www.eatbbqnow.com. Connect with SMOKE BBQ on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. #SmokeBBQFL

Lesson Learned: Use The Big Well Established Company!

* Lesson Learned: Use The Big Well Established Company!

Real fast story,

Jeff Eats is “readying” his home for sale…as a result- sundry items had to be “fixed” and “cleaned-up” for prospective buyers.

To make a long story short, a good friend of mine- who will go nameless here- recommended several “contractors” to do work in my home. This friend swore by each contractor and said that they were dirt-cheap and did a great job. Interesting to note, every one of the contractors was a 1-2 man operation.

Anyway,

1. Jeff Eats hired 1 contractor to paint, repair toilets, install lights, pressure clean, general fix-up work.
2. Jeff Eats hired 1 contractor to replace an AC unit and to fully service other units.
3. Jeff Eats hired 1 contractor to fix all roof leaks.

To- the contractor, about 1 or so month after finishing the job, most of the work had to be redone. For sure, when all 3-contractors left everything seemed in-order…but like I just said, within a month or so…the new AC unit failed, 3 toilets required work, the roof leaked, paint peeled.

The worse part of the story is-that not one of the contractors stood by “their” work…talk about bs-stories and not returning telephone calls. In the case of contractor #1, 2 phone call messages left, none returned. In the case of contractor #2, 5 phone call messages left, none returned. In the case of contractor #3, 2 phone call messages left, none returned.

As Jeff Eats types, calls are out to NEW CONTRACTORS to do the work-that I thought had “already” been done and paid for.

Lesson Learned:

Use a Big Well Established Company to do needed work. For sure its prices are going to be higher than the “small” guy– but the Big Well Established Company will get the job done RIGHT!…even if there is a problem, the Big Well Established Company will respond to your complaints because it doesn’t want WORD OF MOUTH to destroy its Big Well Established Business. Just thinking logically, the Big Well Established Company didn’t get big and well established because its work was no-good!

There is an old Vietnamese saying, “You get what you pay for.” There is also an old Norweigan saying, “Cheap is cheap.”

Use -The Big Well Establised Company!

PILOT VARSITY DISPOSABLE FOUNTAIN PEN

* PILOT VARSITY DISPOSABLE FOUNTAIN PEN.

Jeff Eats recently told you guys (8/3/14 -Medicare & Food!) that effective October 1, 2014 I’m going on Medicare.

For some reason, Son Jeff Eats and Daughter Jeff Eats “found” this news hilarious and every week since have- had “something” delivered to me-that is meant to remind me as to how old-I’m getting! Those two Eats are real peaches!

Anyway,

This morning Jeff Eats received a shipment of Pilot Varsity Disposable Pens ordered through amazon.com. The manufacturer describes these pens as…

“Enjoy an old school writing style with this fashionable disposable fountain pen. Each pen in the Pilot Varsity Disposable Fountain Pen Assorted Ink 7-pack Pouch features a retro style barrel with a real fountain pen nib. Other useful features include an advanced liquid ink system for smooth writing and a visible ink supply so you’ll never be caught off guard.”

Nothing for nothing, these pens are dynamite. There are 7 different ink colors. Figure, they cost 2 bucks a piece–and it’s really enjoyable writing with a fountain pen.

Anyway,

Jeff Eats thought you guys might enjoy hearing about an “old” thing made “new.” You can check the pens out at pilotpen.us. By the way, Staples and other big box retailers stock the “pen”-so it must have a pretty big retail following.

Finally to Son Jeff Eats and Daughter Jeff Eats…ballpoint pens had “already” been invented by the time I started school, so nice try! That said, all of the wooden desks at PS 179 where I attended kindergarten through 6th grade- had holes drilled in them where inkwells were placed (by the kids who came before me)…and if you don’t know what an inkwell is, tough!!!! Go GOGGLE “it” on your new Apple Watches.

***** China Express, 5748 West Flagler Street, Miami, Florida 33144, (305) 639-8281.

China Express is a Chinese takeout joint. Its got 3 tables- but takeout is the game.

The other day Jeff Eats had “some” business to take care of -right by China Express…so I picked-up egg rolls, pork fried dumplings, honey garlic chicken, pepper steak, shrimp with lobster sauce, shrimp chow mein, roast pork fried rice–and made it a working lunch at my friend Michael’s office.

Real easy to score this joint…everything was delicious, the portions were huge, cheap prices.

You can check menu/prices/other info at chinaexpressmiami.com.

Like I said 2 seconds ago, this is a takeout joint-so it won’t play for 98.89% of you. For the other 1.11% of you-you now know where to get some real solid Chinese takeout.

Right about now, some of you guys are “thinking” hey Jeff pretty skimpy review. To you guys I say, Chinese takeout, delicious food, huge portions, cheap prices-by my friend Michael’s office…and if you insist, the fried pork dumplings and honey garlic chicken were worth the trip alone (which Jeff Eats had to make anyway)-down to Miami.

China Express is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-10pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm.

A “beautiful” re-creation of her timeless hits by the live vocalists and musicians of Tapestry, direct from California in their only east coast appearance this season!

Carole King is without question the most successful and revered female singer-songwriter in pop music history. More than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by over 1000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles — from “Will You Love Me Tomorrow”, “Take Good Care of My Baby”, “Run to Him”, “Crying in the Rain”, “The Loco-Motion”, “Up on the Roof”, “One Fine Day”, “I’m Into Something Good”, “Just Once in My Life” and “Don’t Bring Me Down”. Her 1971 album “Tapestry” took King to the pinnacle, winning all 3 of the key Grammy Awards — record, song and album of the year as well as best female vocalist honors for King. With more than 25 million units sold, Tapestry remained the best-selling album by a female artist for a quarter century and King went on to amass three other platinum and seven gold albums.

Tapestry: Tribute to Carole King faithfully recreates the glorious sound of a live Carole King concert, leaving you with memories of the great music she wrote and recorded, including “You’ve Got a Friend”, “Natural Woman”, “It’s Too Late”, “So Far Away”, “I Feel the Earth Move” and “Beautiful”, the title song of the mega-hit Broadway musical about the life and times of one of America’s most prolific, honored, and revered singer-songwriters. Enjoy an evening of the signature sounds of Ms. King with this must-see show that everyone calls “Some Kind of Wonderful.”

***** Shavedway Subs, 4900 West Atlantic Boulevard, Margate, Florida 33063, (954) 977-3019.

First things first, Jeff Eats doesn’t “get” the name Shavedway…if you ask me, rather odd!

Anyway,

The other day Jeff Eats did a lunch at Shavedway Subs and I gotta tell you-this joint makes awesomely delicious subs.

In a nutshell, cold/hot subs-wraps, salads. Order at/pickup at counter. Handful of tables. Very reasonable prices. You can check menu/prices/other info at shavedway.com.

The “taste test” included- tuna salad sub, meatball sub, Cuban sandwich…like I said 2 seconds ago, awesomely delicious.

shavedway1

Look! Jeff Eats has eaten in more sub joints than my waistline cares to remember. If you think that I can “recall” each and every outing, you’re nuts. It may sound crazy, but sometimes I gotta read jeffeats.com just to keep my facts straight. With the aforesaid (that’s a lawyer’s “word”) in mind, I think I’m gonna remember Shavedway Subs- 1. because its sandwiches were delicious, 2. because of its rather odd name… Ah-So!-that’s why they named it Shavedway!

Shavedway Subs is open Monday-Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday 10am-3pm, closed Sunday.
