***** Ellie’s 50’s Style Diner.

Recent e-mail from reader Linda James.

Jeff,

We are recent transplants from Princeton, New Jersey. My husband and I both recently retired and moved to be near our grown kids in Delray Beach. We both love diners and from reading Jeff Eats you seem to see things as we do. What do you suggest in Delray Beach/Boynton Beach area? We wouldn’t mind retro 50s-60s style.
Thank you very much,
Linda James

***** Ellie’s 50’s Style Diner, 2410 North Federal Highway, Delray Beach, Florida 33483 (561) 276-1570.

Ellie’s name says it all…a 1950’s diner. It’s not a real 1950’s relic, but when you are inside you’ll really enjoy the fountain-counter, booth seating, formica tables, juke box and black and white checkerboard floor…not to mention a full diner menu that is loaded with appetizers, soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, meat-fish-chicken entrees…there also plenty of ice cream, pies and cakes.

Ellie’s food is DINER FOOD…This is not a gourmet restaurant. Over the years, I have eaten at Ellie’s something like 10 times. Great place for a greasy burger (meant as a compliment) and french fries…tuna fish on rye toast…meatloaf…hopefully you get the picture.

Take a look at Ellie’s website at www.elliescatering.com for menu/pricing/and a virtual tour of the joint.

By the way, attached to the “diner” is a full catering facility…I have been to two catered affairs, one was a 1950’s themed 50th birthday party for 100 and the other was a wedding for something like 150 and both parties were sensational.

Ellie’s does breakfast, lunch and dinner…Sunday-Thursday 8am-9pm and Friday-Saturday 8am-10pm.

If you wear saddle shoes you will look real stupid…but tee shirt/shorts will be just fine

***** Tien Tien Chinese Takeout, 9975 Miramar Parkway, Miramar, Florida 33025, (954) 436-6913.

Tien Tien Chinese Takeout is a TAKEOUT ONLY joint…

Long story short, a recent business-eat in-lunch meeting had Tien Tien delivering…

Wonton Soup
BBQ Ribs
Egg Rolls
Sweet & Sour Pork
Pepper Steak
Shrimp With Lobster Sauce
General Tsoa Chicken
Cashew Chicken
Roast Pork Fried Rice

and I gotta tell you, putting aside- that my buddy Phil paid for the food, Tien Tien’s food was pretty solid stuff. Now for sure, Jeff Eats has had better, but trust me, I’ve also had a whole lot worse! For those of you guys who are “detail oriented”- Wonton Soup (fair), BBQ Ribs (good), Egg Rolls (fair), Pepper Steak (good), Shrimp With Lobster Sauce (fair), General Tsoa Chicken (very good), Cashew Chicken (very good), Roast Pork Fried Rice (good). By the way, Phil had it good, good, fair, good, good, good, good, good- and our friend Lou had it good, good, good, good, good, good, fair, fair!

This joint makes amazing- delicious Detroit Style Pizza!

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, my “knowledge” about Detroit is kinda limited- you know- cars, Al Kaline…what I do know- if Pizza Squared was by my Boca Raton house, I’d weigh something like 347 lbs and be wearing a 52 long suit!

I know-I know–Tampa! Next time your in Bush Garden’s neighborhood- remember that Jeff Eats told you about Pizza Squared.

Just so you know, there is also a second location at 3424 South Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa, Florida 33629, (813) 832-9606.

Pizza Squared is basically a “takeout”…it does have 3- tables that seat 4 each–like I just said, takeout!

Pizza Squared makes Detroit Style Pizza–rather than Jeff Eats knocking -himself trying to describe Detroit Style Pizza-just check the photos that came with this “review.” The joint also makes round pizza, wings and a handful of salads/gyros/sandwiches. The game here–Detroit Style Pizza!!!!!

You can check www.pizzasquaredtampa.com for menu/prices.

Let me wrap this up…

Pizza Squared makes some of the most delicious PIZZA that Jeff Eats has ever eaten.

Absolutely- positively loved Pizza Squared.

If you “come” anywhere near this joint—get the pizza!

Pizza Squared is open Monday-Thursday 11am-11pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-midnight, Sunday 2pm-10pm.

Stingers Bar & Pizzeria (Pompano Beach)

meatball pizza

***** Stingers Bar & Pizzeria, 1201 South Ocean Boulevard, Pompano Beach, Florida 33062, (954) 782-2344.

Not gonna name-names, but a long time reader (Jon G) who “knows his stuff”- has been telling Jeff Eats for almost-forever that I had to try Stingers Bar & Pizzeria!

Long story short, last night Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats gave Stingers a shot…and the man once again- was right on the money…real good- burger/French fries, meatball pizza and philly cheese steak sub!

Just so you know, Stingers Bar & Pizzera is a neighborhood/sports bar-that has been around for something like 21 years- and is as far from being fancy- as can be! The joint is located in a small strip center-right across A1A from the beach…based on what I saw- the crowd is a mix of locals- and tourists that inhabit the hotels/motels that dot the beach-landscape. I’m thinking that Stingers does a ton-of hotel/motel deliveries, but that’s just Jeff Eats thinking!

Stingers got indoor table/booth -outdoor table seating- a separate bar area, and tons of flat screen tvs… like I said 1.5 seconds ago, real casual joint. Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, if you wear anything “more” that a tee shirt/shorts/flip flop ensemble you’re gonna look pitifully overdressed!

Stingers does breakfast, lunch and dinner…

LOVED LOVED LOVED…Danny’s All American Diner & Dairy Bar in Tampa.

Simple tale to tell…which by the way, Jeff Eats already told you on April 22, 2012!

Fast food burgers/hot dogs/fries/onion rings/subs-sandwiches/salads/shakes/ice cream- order/pickup at inside counter or outside window- no inside seating/a load of outside benches to eat at! All kinds of old baseball memorabilia -“decor.”

image

Did Jeff Eats tell you that he and Mrs. Jeff Eats LOVED LOVED LOVED- Danny’s All American Diner & Dairy Bar?- If I didn’t- we LOVED LOVED LOVED the joint! Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, if Danny’s was “close” to my Boca Raton house- regardless of what my cardiologist said, I would eat there everyday- that’s how good its food is…

Now, no bs-here, a recent Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats’ -lunch netted us some absolutely delicious flat top grilled-hamburgers/hot dogs- onion rings and French fries. Trust Jeff Eats on this one, Danny’s stuff is right up there with- the best fast food burgers/hot dogs/fries/onion rings that I’ve had in a very-very long time!

Let Jeff Eats wrap this one up for you guys…

Danny’s is an absolute must try!- the food is dynamite, the prices are reasonable, the staff is as pleasant as can be, the decor/vibe kill and Danny’s “salads” will keep- the vegans, vegetarians, party poopers and dieters in your car from busting your-balls when you pull-up to the joint!

You can check Danny’s menu/prices/info at dannysallamericandiner.com

Danny’s All American Diner & Dairy Bar is open 7 days a week 10:30am-6pm.

***** Danny’s All American Diner & Dairy Bar, 4406 North Falkenburg Road, Tampa, Florida 33610, (813) 740-0606.

There is an old saying…”One picture is worth a thousand words.”—With that in mind, I need you guys to go to www.dannysallamericandiner.com—when you get there- in addition to menu/prices, you will find photos/videos which will “explain” this joint in detail. Basically, you order from a small building’s window and pickup your own food—you eat outside on picnic tables. Just so you know, Danny’s was featured on tv’s ‘Diners, Drive-ins & Dives’–that “segment” is on Danny’s site…for good or bad, thanks to Guy Fieri, Danny’s customer base is now just not limited to townies.

For you purists out there, Danny’s really isn’t a diner—actually, it’s a hole in the wall-fast food joint that does breakfast stuff, burgers, franks, sandwiches, salads, fries, ice cream, shakes.

Before we go any further, I absolutely loved Danny’s. No lying, if Danny’s was by-my house, I’d eat there at least once a week.

The other day I did lunch at Danny’s…”tried”-bacon cheeseburger, french fries, onion rings, chocolate shake. For what’s it worth, I would match Danny’s “flat-top” grilled burger/fries/onion rings/shake against the best that I’ve had down here in South Florida. There really isn’t too much more that I can say about this joint other than–its food is tremendous, its dumpy roadside building has a great retro-vibe (watch the video), its prices are reasonable and Danny- a former marine (who cooks everything) captures the essence of what American roadside food is suppose to be-and not what the McDonald’s of the world have pushed on us.

I highly recommend Danny’s All American Diner & Dairy Bar.

Danny’s is open Monday-Friday 8am-6pm, Saturday 10:30am-3pm, closed on Sunday.
