Latest Review: 8/1/2012

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats the 1st Street Deli makes an absolutely terrific-Matzo Ball Soup. If you don’t tell too many people, during the past 3 years- on average- Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats ate at the 1st Street Deli something like every 6 weeks or so- and everything that we ordered (i.e.- hamburgers, hot dogs pastrami, corned beef, turkey, potato pancakes, chopped liver, tuna salad, chicken salad) was right on the money! The 1st Street Deli is a great looking joint and its service is as pleasant and competent as can be!

By the way when Jeff Eats first ‘reviewed” the joint back on 8/1/12 there was an- Original Brooklyn Water Bagel outlet in the restaurant…that’s no more, the 1st Avenue Deli now has its own (bagels made in house) operation in that space!- Just in case you’re wondering, the bagels that Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have tried- (everything, plain, onion, sesame) were as good, if not better than the stuff being turned out by most of the bagel joints that dot South Florida’s landscape!

1st Street Deli is open:
Breakfast
Monday – Sunday: 6:30AM – 11AM | Featuring hot, fresh donuts with every dine-in entrée.

Lunch & Dinner
Monday – Sunday: 11AM – 11PM

Late Night
Friday & Saturday: 11PM – 2AM

*****1st Street Deli, 5550 Northwest 40th Street, Coconut Creek, Florida 33073, (954) 977-6700.

The 1st Street Deli is located inside the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek in Coconut Creek. Great looking joint, with table/booth/counter seating…looks like a NYC “kosher style” deli circa 1960…in addition, part of the “store” has an- The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Company outlet (check Jeff Eats 8/11/09 review for Delray Beach location).

Just so you know, Jeff Eats always treats casino “restaurants” with a jaundiced eye…is the food any good? are the prices outrageous? is this just a tourist trap?

Got some good news for you on 1st Street Deli…

Tried 1st Street Deli the other night for dinner…matzo ball soup (bowl-$4.95), potato pancake appetizer (3 pancakes $5.95), pastrami on rye (with french fries $12.95), salad trio (1-scoop each of chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad-$10.95), 8oz cheeseburger with french fries $11.95)—everything was A-OK! As a point of reference, I know a lot of you guys eat in Too Jay’s Gourmet Deli…the food at 1st Street Deli is better than Too Jay’s stuff (see Jeff Eats’ Too Jay’s review 3/28/09)…as a matter of fact, 1st Street Deli’s food is as good as the stuff served at most of the better bagel joints and New York Kosher Style Delis down here in sunny South Florida. For the record, although very good, 1st Street Deli’s food isn’t quite in the same league (although not by much) as TOP delis like the Pomperdale, Zinger’s or Ben’s (if you like, you can check Jeff Eats’ reviews for these 3 joints, if not, not!) On the pricing front, maybe a “drop” higher here and there-than your favorite bagel joint, but nothing that’s glaring…besides, if you spend the money on food, you won’t have to waste time “losing” it playing the slots—in any event, the Indians are gonna get the cash no matter how you slice it.

Check www.seminolecoconutcreekcasino.com for menu/prices.

One final thought, if you checked my review on The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Company you’d know that it makes some real-good bagels. That said, I think that a bakers dozen at the Casino’s location fetches something like 14 bucks—now that’s a rip-off. One other thing on The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Company, the casino’s website says that the “bagel” store is open from 6am-11pm–but when I was there at 9:30pm it “appeared” to be closed and its bagel display bins were totally empty…not good!

1st Street Deli is open 7 days a week 11am-11pm.
The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Company is open 7 days a week 6am-11pm.

Over the past 5 years or so Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have eaten at Paolo’s 3’s Company Italian Restaurant & Lounge something like 8-times (with last night being the most recent) and each and every time, I/we could’ve sworn that Henry Hill, Tommy DeVito and their buddies would be walking in at any minute! Great food, not exactly- Great service, not exactly, but we really enjoy this joint! Not sure as to the exact allure…but the 1950’s- 1960’s Italian gangster/Rat Pack décor-vibe-wait service, nightly “live oldies” music (Rat Pack, Doo Wop, Elvis, Darin), celebrity sightings like Jake “The Raging Bull LaMotta (I know, you thought he was dead!), separate dance floor, outdoor dining/smoking patio, separate bar area, decent enough food (think- your average “mom & pop” red sauce Italian joint with surprisingly dynamite garlic bread and you’ll be on the right page) and service – make this joint a “one of a kind.”

image

Like I said 2 seconds ago, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats really enjoy Paolo’s 3’s Company. Just so we are straight with each other, if you’re into EDM (Electric Dance Music) Jeff Eats is kinda-thinking (actually I know) that this joint ain’t gonna work for you! Now on the other-hand, if you’re looking for a Marty McFly type “outing”- I am telling you, you will really enjoy Paolo’s 3’s Company Italian Restaurant & Lounge!

Paolo’s 3’s Company is open Sunday-Thursday 4pm-10pm, Friday-Saturday 4pm-11pm.

Few people realize that it was Humperdinck, not Elvis, who made famous the sideburns and flamboyant leather jumpsuits. He has been a legend in the international music industry for the last forty plus years, withover 150 million records sold, with hits such as “(Please) Release Me”, “After The Lovin”, “Spanish Eyes”, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and the unforgetable “Quando, Quando ,Quando”. Several of the major forces in the world of rock n’ roll, including Jimi Hendrix and The Carpenters, started out as opening acts for Humperdinck in the late’60’s, 70’s and ’80’s.
Romance serves as the core of Engelbert Humperdinck’s music and lasting success. He knows how to pick songs with eternal themes of romance and longing. Engelbert recently recorded his first duets CD Engelbert Calling, with a who’s who of the music world, including Sir Elton John, Willie Nelson, Johnny Mathis, Cliff Richard, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Rogers and Gene Simmons, to name a few.

At JARC, we specialize in helping extraordinary people lead ordinary lives. What does that mean? It means every child, every adult, should know the joy of friendship, the satisfaction of doing work that is valued, and the comfort of being a loved and important member of a community.
For us it starts with a simple philosophy: we carry a sense of responsibility to be the voice of people who don’t have a voice that is heard, to be the advocate for people who are unable to advocate for themselves. Our goal is not only to be voices and advocates, but more importantly, to assist our clients in using their collective voices and becoming their own advocates.
Our programs include residential homes and apartments, community case management, and employment training. Through everything we do, we are developing life skills and growing friendships. Some of our clients live in our residential network, others live in private residences where we provide support services. Still others come to daily programs and live near our center in Boca Raton, Florida.
You don’t have to do this on your own. At JARC we understand families and how to help the extraordinary people who come under our care. Please call us.”

After a powerful debut performance at The Lyric Theatre last December, vocalist and diva Darlene Love returns for another night of soaring vocals and heart-wrenching emotion. Considered “one of the greatest singers of all time” by Rolling Stone Magazine, Love is known for her vital role as a vocalist in the biggest hits of the ‘50s and ‘60s, from The Ronnette’s “Be My Baby” to Bobby Pickett’s “Monster Mash.” Darlene Love will perform some of her greatest singles, including “Christmas Baby (Please Come Home)” and “He’s a Rebel” in downtown Stuart this February.

Darlene Love got her start in show business when the young singer was in high school, forming the little-known girl-group called The Blossoms. By 1962, Love had attracted the attention of record producer Phil Spector, who immediately signed her. Darlene Love quickly became one of the most recorded vocalists in the music industry, working with major artists such as Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, and Sonny and Cher. Aside from her success as a singer, Love has also enjoyed a career as an actress, performing both on stage and in film. Notably, Love played the role of Danny Glover’s wife in all four of the Lethal Weapon movies. With roles in Grease, Carrie, and Hairspray, Darlene Love has also appeared on television programs including Late Night with David Letterman and Saturday Night Live.

Most recently, Darlene Love was featured in the Academy-award winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom, which highlighted the careers of the often under-represented back-up vocalists from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. A 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Darlene Love will bring her powerhouse of a voice to The Lyric stage this season for an unforgettable, soulful performance.

Sweet Dewey’s BBQ’s “hole in the wall” size -didn’t do justice to the delicious food that came out of its kitchen- if that makes sense to you guys?

Like I said, 2 seconds ago, we’ll talk next week about the “new” restaurant!
