***** Grimaldi’s Coal-Brick Oven Pizzeria, 11701 Lake Victoria Gardens Avenue, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida 33410, (561) 625-4669.

Grimaldi’s Coal-Brick Oven Pizzeria is a “coal oven” pizza chain…there are currently locations in Arizona, Florida, Nevada, New Jersey, New York and Texas. For our purposes, there is currently 1-location in South Florida (Palm Beach Gardens) with announced plans to open a second spot at 1 North Clematis Street, West Palm Beach.

You can check menu/prices/locations at www.grimaldispizzeria.com.

Over the years, I’m gonna guess- that I have eaten in the Brooklyn location 10 times and the Tucson joint 8…Last night, I had dinner at Palm Beach Garden’s restaurant…same menu, same delicious pizza. The only problem I have with Grimaldi’s is that its menu is extremely limited…like try- pizza, a handful of salads, handful of calzones, handful of desserts…end of story. So–if pizza and salad ain’t your bag, you’re in for a serious problem while the rest of your party stuff their faces.

The Palm Beach Gardens’ joint is located in DOWNTOWN AT THE GARDENS…a gorgeous white elephant outdoor mall, which has more empty stores than there are Chins in a Chinese phonebook.

Grimaldi’s pizza is outstanding…it’s right up there with the best of breed. The joint’s caesar and caprese salad are also delicious. The Palm Beach Garden’s joint has a full bar, indoor and outdoor patio seating.

So what we got here…one of the best coal fired pizza/salad joints in South Florida albeit with a very limited menu…great looking indoor wood decor/outdoor patio seating…full bar—in a huge ghost town complex.

Grimaldi’s is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-10pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-midnight.

Jeff Laub is a Brooklyn, NY native who writes and performs his totally original material in comedy clubs, country clubs and on cruise ships the world over. He’s been featured on Fox News, and appeared on the Showtime Showcase and the MDA telethon. Jeff has also opened for stars of stage and screen such as Oscar winner Joel Grey, Tony Orlando, Melissa Manchester, Lou Rawls.

from jefflaub.com

Jeff Laub is a funny guy. Some people are tall. Some people are brilliant. Some people are beautiful. And some people are naturally funny. It’s what you are. It’s what you do. Lebron dunks, Martha cooks and Jeff Laub makes people laugh. He’s always been funny. He was funny in P.S. 99, Midwood High School and especially in Brooklyn College, where he once starred in Country Fair as a character based on his comedic idol, Don Rickles.
But funny isn’t always funny. After spending too much time cracking up his Pi Lam fraternity brothers, Jeff bombed on his calculus and chemistry finals, abruptly putting an end to his mother’s dream of her “tatala’s” future dental career. So Jeff switched his major to Television Production and there was no looking back. He earned a Masters degree in Speech & Theater and Television Production and landed the best job of his life, working as a Page on the Dick Cavett Show. Earning $1.70 an hour and pocketing an extra 30 cents a day that was supposed to go towards shirt dry cleaning, Jeff spent each day meeting and watching the greatest entertainers, in the world, including comedy legends such as Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Bill Cosby and Robert Klein. But married life beckoned, and even Jeff Laub couldn’t live on $1.70 an hour forever, even in a $101 a month rent control apartment on Ocean Avenue.
So he landed a job in the game show business, utilizing his Masters Degree expertise by typing questions on blue index cards and fetching tea for Bill Cullen (Bill preferred Red Rose, by the way). Eventually, Jeff worked his way up to writer and Producer on such shows as “Three On a Match,” “Winning Streak,” “Shoot For the Stars” and the Emmy Award winning “10,000 Pyramid” starring Dick Clark. Things were looking up, so Jeff moved to Wantagh, Long Island with wife Ellyn and baby girl Heather.
He then created “The ShowBiz Quiz,” which resulted in a development deal with NBC. But Jay Leno said he wanted the time slot, so the show never got on the air.
Jeff soon branched out and pioneered the Instructional Video genre as writer and co-Executive Producer of “Watch Your Step” and the VIRA award winning “The Incredible Magic of Magic.” Unfortunately, it was 1979, and only six people in American owned VCRs, so the profits were slim to say the least. But he kept himself afloat by writing and starring in sketch comedy on “The Showtime Showcase,” hosted by Tom Kennedy. Son, Cory arrived and the Laub family unit was now complete.
Soon the Corporate world beckoned, and Jeff became the number one writer and outside creative consultant for Pepsi-Cola Company, writing and producing hundreds of speeches, roasts, song parodies and multi-media presentations for sales meetings and bottler conventions all over the U.S. for over 12 years. But he was tired. And New York was cold. Still funny, but cold and tired. So Jeff Laub sold the house on Long Island, packed up the wife and two kids and moved to south Florida.
He really had no choice, did he? Brooklyn…to Long Island…to Florida. That’s the Appalachian Trail for Jews and Italians.
Then, one day, Jeff discovers the open mic comedy show at Borders Bookstore and it hits him. “Finally…a job where I can always be funny and only have to work an hour a day.” The rest is history.
Jeff Laub performs year-round at comedy clubs, country clubs, hotels, casinos, synagogues, churches, corporate functions and on cruise ships all over the world.
He’s had the pleasure of opening for such stars as Oscar winner Joel Grey, Tony Orlando, Lou Rawls, Hal Linden, Lucy Arnaz and Sally Kellerman.
One of Jeff’s key strengths is his versatility and skill in adapting his style and material to any audience setting. With his razor sharp wit and ad-libbing ability, he’s received rave reviews whether he’s performing his “R” rated late night comedy club shows or headlining for 2000 senior citizens at an adult retirement community. Hopefully, you’ll have a chance to catch Jeff’s act soon. But don’t wait too long. He hasn’t totally given up on that dental career. Are you listening, Ma?

The Flamingos – loved by fans, revered by fellow singers and enshrined forever into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as eternal proof of it all. From the time he wrote and sang lead on “Lovers Never Say Goodbye”, Terry Johnson knew he had created something transcendent. With the release of “I Only Have Eyes for You” a year later, The Flamingos reputation was cemented as the pre-eminent vocal group of their era. Rolling Stone magazine even called them, “one of the, if not the, best” of the time. The singles and the albums – totaling 9 national smash hits – just kept on coming, and even though the original group splintered when Terry left in 1962, the Flamingos live on today with Johnson’s new spotlight companions, Starling Newsome and Stan Prinston. “Nobody Loves Me Like You”, “Besame Mucho”, “I’ll Be Home”, “Mio Amore”, “Begin the Beguine” and songs like “Ebb Tide” and “I Who Have Nothing” from their Diamond Anniversary CD are on the menu for this feast of timeless music and style. Class personified, voices of champagne, ambassadors for romance – welcome The Flamingos to the Curtis Peterson on July 23rd.

The Mystics were one of the most loved street corner groups of the 1950’s and remain a crowd-favorite today. Their biggest hit, “Hushabye” made the national charts in 1959 and the follow-up, “Don’t Take the Stars”, became a collector’s classic over the years. Both featured the original lead voice of Phil Cracolici, who still fronts the group today. Cracolici, along with his nephew George Galfo, perform all over the country telling tales of Brooklyn street corners at a time when the locale was bursting with vocal group talent. Joined by Rocky Marsicano (of Lenny Cocco & the Chimes) and Ralph Rati (of New York’s Music Box show band), the originals show no signs of slowing down, nearly 6 decades after the group’s inception. The Mystics’ show is an endearing and joyful romp through 50’s and 60’s classics you

Just in case you guys are wondering where Son Jeff Eats and Daughter Jeff Eats are taking Jeff Eats for Father’s Day…

For the record, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats love Bobby Rubino’s…so let’s kill two birds with one stone, Father’s Day Story & Dish Of The Week Story (Dinner For Two $25)!

***** Bobby Rubino’s, 2501 North Federal Highway, Pompano Beach, Florida 33064, (954) 781-7550.

Haven’t really got the time or inclination to tell you Bobby Rubino’s story…suffice it to say, Bobby Rubino use to work for Tony Roma’s which was a South Florida bbq ribs/chicken chain, then Bobby Rubino in 1978 opened his own bbq ribs/chicken joint naming it Bobby Rubino’s—over the years Bobby and Tony were huge competitors each with loads of South Florida locations…not sure on Tony Roma’s dimished numbers—but today, there is only one Bobby Rubino’s location left and it’s-in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Now…

For whatever it’s worth, for something like 30 years—old Jeff Eats has been a huge Bobby Rubino’s fan…delicious sweet sauced ribs/chicken, french fries, onion rings, corn—never empty soda glasses.

Real simple…loads of food at really reasonable prices. If your looking for upscale-gourmet-fancy schmancy this joint ain’t for you. Just so we are straight, the last outpost is kinda on the dated 1970’s looking side–so like Jeff Eats said 2 seconds ago, fancy schmancy is a definite no-no here.

Anyway…

If Bobby Rubino’s sounds like something that might interest you, do yourself a GIGANTIC FAVOR and go to its website www.bobbyrubinos.com—you’ll find menu/prices, you’ll also find a bunch of coupons that will allow you to literally eat like a pig for virtually nothing.

In all fairness to you guys, Jeff Eats in recent years had lost “contact” with Bobby Rubino’s—and it was Rubino’s recent advertisement/coupons in the Sun Sentinel that reunited “us.”

To wrap this one up…my favorite coupon:

DINNER FOR 2 -$20 plus 1 beverage purchase.
Includes:
1 appetizer–onion loaf
2 entrees–full rack babyback ribs or rib/chicken combo
2 sides
1 dessert

Bobby Rubino’s is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

* Back In The Dayz-Legends Of Rock & Roll.

If you want to see one of America’s premier 50s-60s-70s Rock & Roll cover bands in action- then plan on seeing The Shindigs’- Back In the Dayz- Legends Of Rock & Roll show at the Boca Black Box, 8221 Glades Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33434, Box Office: (561) 483-9036, Tickets: bocablackbox.com, goldstar.com (discount tickets).

Jeff Eats has been following The Shindigs for years and I am telling you they are crazy good!

Here’s what Jeff Eats wrote about The Shindigs way-back on December 1, 2008…

Posted December 1, 2008
***** The Shindigs *****

This past Friday Night (November 28, 2008) I attended a private party at the Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton. The evening’s entertainment featured a 4-piece South Florida based 1950’s-60’s-70’s tribute band…The Shindigs.

I have to tell you, that The Shindigs had a crowd of 250 up and dancing all night. The band did absolutely amazing covers of the hits of such groups/acts as (now get ready for this partial list in no particular order)…The Beatles, The Dave Clark Five, The Zombies, The Monkees, The Grass Roots, The Bee Gees, K.C & The Sunshine Band, The Commodores, The Rascals, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, The Byrds, The Temptations, Barry White, Chubby Checker, James Brown, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Dion & The Belmonts, Roy Orbison, The Beach Boys, Chicago, Gerry & The Pacemakers and Bill Haley & His Comets.

Take a look at The Shindigs’ website www.theshindigs.us. If you check the members’ bios…you will find that these guys aren’t “kids” playing rock’n’ roll, but rather… are seasoned-professional musicians with extensive music industry backgrounds. If you check “Events” you will find that in the upcoming months, The Shindigs have South Florida “free” gigs scheduled at such venues as the Hollywood Band Stand (12/3/08) and the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (12/26/08)…

I am telling you, that if you like great classic rock ‘n roll/disco music from the 50’s-60’s-70’s, you will absolutely love The Shindigs. By the way, The Shindigs also perform a Beatles’ tribute show–costumes and all…under the name The Beatles Remembered. If you check You Tube, you will find a number of videos starring The Beatles Remembered and the performances are amazingly accurate…

The Shindigs are a band/act that you should make it your business to see. By the way, unlike many bands…The Shindigs’ music is 100% live, no tracks or tapes are used to enhance the band’s performance.

***** Sande’s Restaurant, 1717 North Federal Highway, Delray Beach 333483, (561) 272-9104.

Not exactly sure as to how long Sande’s- a “mom & pop” cash only- counter/table/booth seating diner has been around- all I can tell you- is that Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have been eating there for something like 17 years.

image

image

Simple tale to tell you guys, Sande’s is open 365 days a year 6am-2:45pm and serves up delicious, reasonably priced – breakfast stuff, salads, sandwiches, burgers, entrees, desserts. If you didn’t catch it before, the joint is a cash only-situation!

Long story short, a recent e-mail from long time Jeff Eats’ reader Jon G- prompted a Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats’ lunch-yesterday- and “alerted” me to the fact that Jeff Eats had never mentioned this terrific “mom & pop” diner to you guys- so if you go and like Sande’s you can thank Jeff Eats and- if you go and don’t like Sande’s- blame Jon G!

By the way, here’s Jon G’s e-mail…
From: Jon G
Subject: Sande’s Restaurant
Jeff, ever get a chance to try Sande’s in Delray on US1. Real good mom and pop diner. The frosted flake French Toast is delicious. You’ll like it!!

Finally, for you guys who made it “all” the way down here- that Frosted Flakes French Toast that reader- Jon G raved about- is absolute dynamite- I’ve had it a good handful of times!
