For the interested, Rolling Stone Magazine ranks Appice #28-“!00 Greatest Drummers Of All Time”…

28. Carmine Appice
A valuable team player as well as a bruising power hitter with an instantly identifiable style, Carmine Appice literally wrote the book on rock drumming: His 1972 text The Realistic Rock Drum Method has been a staple since its release. Appice made his name in the late Sixties with eccentric psych outfit Vanilla Fudge – influencing a young John Bonham with his romping, aggressively funky grooves – before moving on to a heavier blues-rock style with Cactus and Beck, Bogert & Appice. He demonstrated his range in the late-Seventies Rod Stewart band, contributing sassy backbeats and key songwriting assistance on hits such as “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy.” (Stewart reportedly called Appice “The Dentist” for employing what he termed “too many fill-ins.”) More recently, he’s kept busy playing “Drum Wars” shows with younger brother and fellow elite hard-rock beatsmith Vinny (Dio, Black Sabbath). According to Appice, some of his key innovations came from the constraints of playing live rock music during his formative years: “All the stuff we all did – the stuff that I am [credited with] starting was just stuff that I did out of necessity,” Appice told Drum Magazine in 2011. “I pioneered the use of big drum sets and played with the butt end of the sticks early on. I did that because there were no P.A. systems.”

A Good Night’s Sleep

Posted on February 8th, 2017 · Music/Events/Other · 1 Comment »

* A Good Night’s Sleep.

I don’t know about you guys but every so often I don’t sleep so good!

Down below an article Jeff Eats recently caught on rebootwithjoe.com.

By: Claire Georgiou, Reboot Naturopath, B.HSc ND

The health benefits of a good night’s rest are endless. Sleep supports a healthy immune system, happy mood, trim waistline, a sharp brain, glowing skin, healthy hair, happy hormones and long-term it helps lower your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and premature death.

Forty percent of Americans are said to be getting less than 7 hours of sleep on average a night, this is a frightening fact considering that studies show less than 7 hours per night increases the risk of premature death particularly for men and many other serious health conditions. 25% of Americans are using sleeping drugs (hypnotics) to help them get some shut eye.

It is also well known that sleep supports weight loss and a healthy waistline. People who are sleeping less than the recommended 7-9 hours per night will have hormone changes that are tied to an increased appetite, eating larger portions, increased cravings and pleasure signals for high-calorie foods, combined with a reduced ability to stop these impulses, a very dangerous combination for weight control.

In studies people who were sleep deprived (less than 7 hours) had increased levels of ghrelin (a hunger hormone) and reduced leptin levels (satiety hormone).

Sleep deprivation causes a list of overwhelming symptoms such as irritability, headaches, fatigue, increased appetite, depressed mood, slow thoughts, increased appetite and cravings, infections, poor decision making processes, depression, premature death, cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

Here is a list of foods that have shown to improve sleep:

1. Cherries:Particularly tart cherries. They contain melatonin which enhances sleep onset, depth and length of sleep.

2. Walnuts: Walnuts naturally contain the antioxidant hormone melatonin which supports sleep and they also contain the amino acid tryptophan which is a precursor for melatonin.

3. Dark Green Leafy Vegetables:Leafy greens such as kale, spinach, collards, arugula (rocket) and watercress contain excellent levels of calcium and magnesium, these minerals support relaxation of the nervous system and the muscles. Calcium also helps the brain use the amino acid tryptophan to manufacture the sleep-inducing substance melatonin.

4. Bananas: Bananas are an excellent source of magnesium, potassium and Vitamin B6, which are needed for relaxation and to make melatonin (a sleep-inducing hormone). My little 4 year old often asks for a small banana when she is having trouble sleeping, funny thing our instinct.

5. Herbal Teas:Teas such as chamomile, passionflower, skullcap. They contain sedative properties that enhance the sleep cycle.

6. Honey: This natural sweetener in your tea can give you a slight elevation of blood sugar that allows tryptophan to enter the brain effectively to enhance sleep.

7. Almonds: They contain vitamin B6, magnesium and protein which supports melatonin production and healthy blood glucose levels to promote sleep.

8. Oatmeal:Carbohydrate-rich foods have a sedative effect although you want something slow release as high GI foods may help you to sleep initially but they can create wakefulness later in the night due to dramatic sugar slumps after the initial spike.

9. Hummus: Chickpeas are a great source of tryptophan and B6. Vitamin B6 supports healthy sleep hormone cycles.

10. Pineapple: Pineapple was shown in research to enhance and raise serum levels of melatonin levels in males. Oranges also showed promise along with bananas of course.

Having a small snack an hour or 2 before bed can enhance sleep, while it is really important to remember not to eat heavy large meals or snacks before bed as this will have the opposite effect and will create a restless night.

***** Corner Bakery Cafe, 2240 Northwest 19th Street, Boca Raton, Florida 33431, (561) 417-6060.

Corner Bakery Cafe is a U.S. chain of self-serve cafes that specializes in breakfast stuff, breads, pastries, soups, sandwiches, salads. Last count-about 150 of these joints spread out–Arizona, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Virginia. For our purposes, there are 4 Florida location-Boca Raton, Pembroke Pines and 2-Miami. You can check www.cornerbakery.com for locations/menu/prices/photos.

Simple concept-order/pickup at counter.

Can’t really believe it, but Jeff Eats has-never reviewed Panera Bread. For the purposes of this story, I’m gonna assume that you know what Panera Bread is all about. With that in mind, Corner Bakery Cafe looks/tastes/feels/quacks just like Panera Bread does–only difference, Panera Bread has more than 10-times the number of stores that Corner Bakery Cafe does. For those of you who don’t know about Panera Bread…check www.panerabread.com.

As Jeff Eats’ uncle (by marriage) Sam Ting would say…Corner Bakery Cafe and Panera Bread are the same-thing (took some doing to sneak this one in here)-jacks of all trades and masters of none.

Jeff Eats has eaten twice in Boca’s-Corner Bakery Cafe…chicken salad on rye, French toast/scrambled eggs, meatball panini, chicken noodle soup. Now, nothing terrible–but nothing that I would ever consider for a last meal at Attica. Look, I know-this is Corner Bakery Cafe’s story–but just insert Panera Bread where Corner Bakery Cafe is now and vice versa–and you basically got Jeff Eats’ take on Panera Bread…of course, I ate different stuff at Panera Bread’s CityPlace and Mission Bay joints-but like Corner Bakery Cafe’s food, I wasn’t a fan.

To be perfectly honest with you, for the life of me- Jeff Eats can’t figure out why Panera Bread and to a lesser extent Corner Bakery are seemingly so successful. No fooling, their food/service are mediocre at best…same mystery surrounds McDonald’s- but that’s a story for another day!

If you refuse to listen, Corner Bakery Cafe is open Monday-Sunday 7am-8pm.

A Tribute To The Jersey Boys And More- Featuring Michael D’Amore (Boca Black Box- Boca Raton)

* A Tribute To The Jersey Boys And More- Featuring Michael D’Amore.

Literally 5 minutes ago, the Boca Black Box added – A Tribute To the Jersey Boys And More- Featuring Michael D’Amore to its entertainment lineup -scheduling the show on Monday, February 13, 2017 (8pm).

Trust Jeff Eats on this one, if you’re a fan of The Four Seasons, doo wop and 50s-60s Rock n Roll you gotta go see- A Tribute To The Jersey Boys And More- Featuring Michael D’Amore! Jeff Eats & Mrs. Jeff Eats saw the 90 minute show- last year at the Boca Black Box and the 6 member band received 11 standing ovations and had the audience singing in their seats and dancing in the aisles all night long!

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, the band’s lead singer, Michael D’Amore has an absolutely huge Southeast & Southwest Florida following…Rather than try and “explain” D’Amore’s talent to you- do yourself a favor and check him out at michaeldamore.com and you’ll have some idea as to what I’m talking about! By the way, Michael D’Amore just happens to be the lead singer of the The Capris who had the legendary doo wop hits “There’s A Moon Out Tonight” and “Morse Code Of Love.”

There is absolutely no question in Jeff Eats’ mind that A Tribute To The Jersey Boys And More- Featuring Michael D’Amore is going to be a Standing Room Only situation- so if you wanna go, get your tickets as soon as is humanly possible (I know a bit over dramatic)…

The Skinny:
A Tribute To The Jersey Boys And More Featuring- Michael D’Amore

Boca Raton, Florida 333434
Box Office: 561.483.9036
Tickets: bocablackbox.com goldstar.com (discount tickets)

from bocablackbox.com
New York born and New Jersey raised Michael D’Amore brings an authenticity and light heartedness to the stellar sounds of the 60’s. Being from N.J. and possessing a strong falsetto voice naturally resulted in a love of The Four Seasons songs. Michael was the featured performer at the honor ceremony for original Four Season member Tommy DeVito performing for the music industry’s elite as well as the cast of Jersey Boys.

Michael has been an opening act for groups such as The Stylistics, Tommy James, Gary US Bonds and Tony Orlando to name a few. Having opened for and performed with many iconic sixties artists, Michael has developed the Jersey Boys and More tribute show in collaboration with musical director Tim Goodman. This is a “Clap Along, Sing Along, Dance in Your Seat” kind of show. It is not only a walk down a musical memory lane, but a fun time with an exciting band featuring world class touring musicians that have played with Bobby Vinton, Jerry Lee Lewis, Lou Rawls and so many great artists.

This will be a fun filled evening of music covering not only The Four Seasons hits but the sounds of an entire era.

This joint’s veal chop parmigiana is delicious and it’s big enough to feed two people!

* Frank & Dino’s, 718 South Federal Highway, Deerfield Beach, Florida 33441, (954) 427-4909.

Let’s play a game…eat at a new restaurant before Jeff Eats does.

Yesterday, Frank & Dino’s a casual-moderatley priced “Southern Italian” joint opened its doors for business. Yeah, I know–you thought-they were dead.

Anyway, this restaurant is the latest “project” of South Florida restauranteur extraordinare Dennis Max–so, if past performance means anything, this one has the potential to be a huge winner. You can check menu/prices at www.frankanddinos.com. You can also Google–Dennis Max and The Max Group for info if you are so inclined.

So…just maybe, you guys would like to get a jump on Jeff Eats and almost everybody else in South Florida and try this one out. By the way Max is also working on another Italian joint, Assaggio del Forno-for Boca Raton, but that’s a whole-other story for another day.

*****UPDATE–April 23, 2014*****

Sorry it took so long to get to this…it just slipped through the cracks.

As you guys can see from the “Comments” there are mixed feelings on this joint.

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple recently did dinner at Frank & Dino’s…

Great upscale looking joint-featuring photos of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin–hey! I know you knew–but I’m thinking that some Martian who just landed–might not know who Frank & Dino are/were based solely on first names. By the way, big Sinatra fan here–as for Martin, boy- was he lucky that he met Jerry Lewis.

Anyway,

Let me start by telling you, that we ordered…fried calamari, Caesar salad, chicken scarpariello, veal chop parmigiana, penne ala vodka, chicken marsala and everything was right on the money–while Jeff Eats is on the subject of “on the money” -the stuff was a bit pricey–but we knew going in (and most of you who tried it also knew) that Frank & Dino’s wasn’t a “local” mom & pop red sauce joint. Back to the food..I will tell you that the portions were-shall we say-quite generous-the veal chop parmigiana alone could have easily fed 2-people.

Let me wrap this up…

Jeff Eats and Mrs.Jeff Eats really enjoyed Frank & Dino’s…

If you are looking for an “upscale” Italian joint- with good food and a cool vibe, trust Jeff Eats when I tell you- that Frank & Dino’s will definitely work for you!
