A recent e-mail received by Jeff Eats:

Jeff,

Long time reader. Love the Jeff Eats’ site.
I need a great 50s-60s Rock N Roll band for a charity event that I am the Chairperson of. The charity event is in September, 2016 and will be held in North Miami. Expecting around 300 people.
I have seen a number of south Florida 50s-60s bands and although many are very good, I would love to have a band that is really special and if possible not based in the immediate area so that its appearance will be be fresh, in that most if not all of the guests have never seen the band before.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Got the perfect band for you, Johnny Dee and the Starlights (I know-Joey Dee & The Starliters)!

Trust Jeff Eats on this one, the band is amazingly-good!

Jeff Eats is thinking (actually I’m knowing) that your crowd will go absolutely nuts over Johnny Dee and the Starlights- as they put on a great show! I’m also thinking, that because Johnny Dee and the Starlights is based out of Orlando and seldom plays- Dade/Broward/Palm Beach Counties- that most of your guests- will not have seen the band before!

Like I said before, the band is amazingly good!

You can check the band out at johnnydeeandthestarlights.com.

Thanks for reading…

Calling themselves “your time machine back to the early days of rock ‘n’ roll,” this Florida band features music made famous by Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, and Elvis Presley, among many others. Songs include classics like “Runaround Sue,” “Only the Lonely,” and “Unchained Melody.” Come hear the hits of yesteryear played the way they were meant to be played!

MORE ABOUT JOHNNY DEE AND THE STARLIGHTS

Much more than your average cover band, Johnny Dee and the Starlights are out to change the way you think about tribute performances. Featuring popular actor and musician Andy Matchett as Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Hank Williams, and his own alter ego, Johnny Dee – along with a five-piece band, including the lovely Starlettes – this is a performance you will not want to miss!

***** Danish Pastry Co., 2031 Tyler Street, Hollywood, Florida 33020, (954) 362-4366.

Real simple bakery/coffee concept going on here…small store, window-counter seating/handful of tables outside—order at/pickup at the counter…

Danish Pastry’s menu has something like 25 different freshly baked pastries, danish, croissants-and orange juice/coffee/tea.

You can check www.danishpastryco.com for pastry/danish/beverage selection-prices.

Look!-based on my double chin…

It would be fair to say, that Jeff Eats in his day, has eaten his fair share of danish and croissants…with that in mind- the cinnamon swirl, maple pecan plait and chocolate bun that I recently had- were delicious.

Trust me on this one, you ain’t gonna find stuff like this at Publix or specialty markets like Doris Italian Market & Bakery or Joseph’s Classic Market.

Really have no opinion on the brewed coffee that I had…to this very day, Jeff Eats can’t quite wrap his head around the $2.50-$—(you fill in the number) cup of coffee concept…I still remember 10 cent-cups at Brooklyn’s- Garfield’s Cafeteria circa 1965–gonna sound crazy, but give or take-all black coffee tastes good to me.

While I’m on the subject of coffee-bet you a buck that in a blind taste test- Julio Valdez or whatever the hell his name is/was (I know it’s Juan) couldn’t tell one coffee bean from another-for sure this guy, Robert Schultz got a ton of people drinking the Kool-Aid… But that’s just what Jeff Eats thinks! As my late uncle by marriage Sam Ting use to say…”Jeff Eats, bet you a buck-that if I blindfold you-you couldn’t tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi.” Uncle Sam was a very bright man–who knew a-lot of “things.”

Anyway…

Danish Pastry Co. is open Monday-Saturday 7am-6pm, Sunday 9am-4pm.

Over the course of his storied career, Money sold over 28 million records and amassed over 20 hits with overwhelming success at both Pop and Rock radio including “Shakin’,” “I Think I’m in Love,” “I Wanna Go Back,” “We Should Be Sleeping,” “Walk On Water,” “I’ll Get By,” and his legendary hit with Ronnie Spector, “Take Me Home Tonight”. Money’s songs have appeared in dozens of movies including, television shows and hit video games including “Mall Cop”, the infamous Geico commercial, “Grand Theft Auto”, and “Guitar Hero”.

Mickey Thomas is the owner of the soaring voice that propelled Starship through the decades of the 80’s and 90’s. With his soulful and compelling vocals, Mickey has established himself as one of rock music’s most recognizable stars. Mickey made his mark in 1976 as lead vocalist on the mega-hit “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” with The Elvin Bishop Band.

In 1979, Mickey’s joined Jefferson Starship and his powerful vocals brought a new wave of success. The group was renamed Starship and had an amazing string of hits including “No Way Out,” “We Built This City,” “Sara,” and an Oscar nomination for the #1 hit “Nothing Gonna Stop Us Now,” from the movie Mannequin. Other top hits included “Find Your Way Back,” “Stranger,” “Laying It On the Line” and “It’s Not Over Till It’s Over” which became Major League Baseball’s theme in 1987. Moreover, every Starship album released since 1979 has gone Gold, Platinum, or Multi-Platinum. Mickey’s stellar voice and video charisma on Starship’s video classics have become staples on MTV and VH1. Material covered in Starship’s live performance ranges from Mickey’s tenure with The Elvin Bishop Band and Starship, as well as songs from his two solo albums.

Drink Tangerine Juice

* Drink Tangerine Juice.

This article originally appeared on October 13, 2014. Do Jeff Eats a big favor and give-it-a-read! Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, no-one really knows for sure how the future is gonna break for them, one way or the other! That said, this Tangerine “stuff” makes a whole lot of sense to me!

image

Posted October 13, 2014
* Drink Tangerine Juice.

One of Jeff Eats’ favorite “drinks” is fresh squeezed tangerine juice.

Take a look at the below-article -Health Benefits of Tangerine Juice (juicebenefits.com)-I already knew the stuff was really good for me, but didn’t know that it was REALLY THAT GOOD for me!

Now, with tangerine season (November-April) nearing…Jeff Eats was thinking- just maybe, it wouldn’t hurt for you guys to plan on drinking an 8oz glass a day, could it? Just so we are straight, I got a “D” in junior high school biology- so if you go into diabetic shock or some other “shock” drinking this stuff- don’t-be suing Jeff Eats based on the claim that I’m some kind of a science/health expert!

By the way, Jeff Eats doesn’t “do” PASTEURIZED fresh squeezed tangerine juice…there are plenty of south Florida markets that have unpasteurized fresh squeezed tangerine juice. The reasons- 1. unpasteurized juice tastes better than the tinkered stuff- does, 2. pasteurizing cooks many of the nutrients out of the juice. Just so you know, don’t waste your time “looking” in Publix- EVERY juice it stocks is pasteurized…I usually catch mine at The Boys Farmers Market (Delray Beach) or Whole Foods Market.

One final thought, if you haven’t got time to go “chasing” around looking for unpasteurized fresh squeezed tangerine juice–you can always just buy some tangerines at your local supermarket and do whatever you want with them…
*****
Health Benefits of Tangerine Juice.

Aside from being sweet and flavorful, tangerine juice has many benefits for your health. In terms of nutritional value and disease-fighting properties, tangerine juice has several advantages over orange juice. From protecting you from diseases and cancer to keeping you fuller longer, this juice has a health benefit for nearly everyone.

Nutritional Value – The Source Of The Health Benefits Of Tangerine Juice
Tangerine juice has all of the tangy flavor of orange juice but with added nutrition. This juice is an excellent source of many antioxidants, such as hesperetin, xanthins, lutein, beta-carotene, and narigenin. Anti-oxidants eliminate free radicals that can cause cancer, as well as fight aging. The anti-oxidant beta cryptoxanthin may reduce inflammation from arthritis. Lutein protects the eyes and helps you keep your eyesight sharp. The flavenoid tangeretin is a powerful agent that has been shown in studies to prevent skin cancer and helps stop the spread of breast-cancer cells. The flavonoids tangeretin and nobiletin have blood thinning and anti-inflammatory properties, which may reduce your risk of heart attacks.

Additionally, tangerine juice is chock-full of vitamin C, which boosts your immunity. Consuming adequate amounts of vitamin C helps your body fight infections from the common cold to the flu. In addition to helping increase your immune function, vitamin C helps your body absorb iron, and helps boost wound healing.

Tangerine juice contains folic acid and potassium, and it is also an excellent source of both soluble and insoluble fiber, which promotes regularity. Being regular has been proven to reduce your risk for developing some forms of cancer, such as colon cancer. The fiber also helps prevent your body from absorbing cholesterol. Fiber whisks some of the cholesterol content from your food out of your system, which can lower your blood levels of LDL, or “bad” cholesterol.

One serving of tangerine juice provides 20-percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A. This is 10-times as much vitamin A as orange juice. Vitamin A is instrumental in protecting your eyesight, promoting immune function and bone and tissue health. The vitamin A in tangerine juice may also stimulate cell growth and cell division.

Antiseptic Properties
Tangerines have natural germ-fighting properties. Tangerine juice may help your body defend itself against an infection from the staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Staphylococcus aureus is highly contagious and causes painful lesions and boils on the skin, particularly on the face or in other tender areas such as the groin or the armpits.

In addition to fighting harmful bacteria, the pectin in tangerine juice has been proven to help increase the number of beneficial bacteria in your intestines. These bacteria improve digestion and increases your body’s ability to defend against harmful bacteria which can cause inflammation and intestinal disorders. When harmful bacteria enter the gut, beneficial bacteria help usher the bad bacteria out of your system before they can cause an infection.

Diet Support
Tangerine juice is an excellent way to start your day if you are dieting. The fiber and carbohydrates in the juice help keep you feeling full, which will prevent over-indulgence later on. Additionally, the sweet finish of the tangerine flavor can help prevent the cravings for sugar that can derail a diet.

Starting your day with tangerine juice is a tasty and healthy way to boost your immunity, bolster your digestive and tissue health and protect your body against the ravages of cancer. Tangerine juice is powerful enough to do all of those things, yet it is so tangy-sweet and flavorful that you will forget all about its many health benefits and simply enjoy the flavor.
