* Walter Becker, Guitarist, Songwriter and Co-Founder of Steely Dan, Dies at 67.

Jeff Eats’ bet here- is that most of you guys never had the honor nor privilege of seeing Steely Dan perform live!

As I’ve written countless times, you’re not getting any younger nor are the “greats”” of Rock n Roll!

Please! Go see these “acts” on their Florida tours!

______

from washingtonpost.com
Walter Becker, the co-founder of the 1970s supergroup Steely Dan, which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, died Sept. 3. He was 67.

His official website announced his death but provided no further details.

Mr. Becker had missed performances earlier in the summer in Los Angeles and New York.

Mr. Becker, a guitarist and bassist, met fellow musician Donald Fagen while they were students at New York’s Bard College in the late 1960s. They later moved to California and worked as songwriters and backup musicians before launching Steely Dan in 1972. (The band’s name derived from a sex toy mentioned in William S. Burroughs’s “Naked Lunch.”)

The group’s first release was the 1972 album “Can’t Buy a Thrill,” which included the hit songs “Reelin’ in the Years,” “Dirty Work” and “Do It Again.” Steely Dan often included a rotating cast of musicians, but Mr. Becker and Fagen were always the core figures and songwriters. Fagen was the lead vocalist.

The Steely Dan sound featured an original, sophisticated style of music that borrowed elements from rock, jazz, pop and soul.

“We play rock ’n’ roll, but we swing when we play,” Mr. Becker told Rolling Stone magazine in 1974. “We want that ongoing flow, that lightness, that forward rush of jazz.”

Later albums included “Countdown to Ecstasy” (1973), “Pretzel Logic” (1974), which featured the band’s biggest hit, “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number,” and “Katy Lied” (1975).

With a group of skilled studio musicians, including drummer Jim Keltner and jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Steely Dan released “Aja” (1977), which sold more than 5 million copies. The album, which contained the hits “Deacon Blues,” “Peg” and the title track, was named one of the 500 greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone.

Steely Dan became one of the top touring groups of the late 1970s, but Fagen and Mr. Becker broke up after the release of the 1980 album “Gaucho.”

They reunited in 2000 to record “Two Against Nature,” which won four Grammys, including Album of the Year. The group recorded one more studio album, “Everything Must Go,” in 2003.

In 2001, Steely Dan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and its music was cited for intellectual sophistication.

Mr. Becker was living on the Hawaiian island of Maui at the time of his death. Fagen said in a statement that he intends to continue to perform Steely Dan’s music with other musicians.

This hole in the wall, order at/pickup at the counter takeout pizza joint- makes an absolutely delicious thin crisp sweet sauce NY slice! The joint’s subs, salads and entrees are also real good.

There’s an old Chinese or maybe it’s an old Japanese-saying…”out of sight out of mind.”

Anyway,

Way back on August 26, 2009- Jeff Eats told you guys about Dean Anthony’s Express-a terrific red sauce Italian “takeout” joint that had just opened in Boca Raton. Long story short, ultra-crappy strip center location -literally made Jeff Eats forget all about the joint (which just happens to be 6 minutes from my home)…that is, until this past Monday when Mrs. Jeff Eats got a Dean Anthony’s Express flyer “advertising” all kinds of- specials in the mail…the result-the ordered 18″ $9.99 cheese pizza, chicken parmigiana sub/philly cheese steak sub/meatball parmigiana sub/sausage-peppers-onion sub ($6.50 each) put Dean Anthony’s Express back on the Eats’ radar.

Real simple…the food was absolute dynamite.

Dean Anthony’s Express is open Monday-Saturday 11am-8:30pm, closed on Sunday.

The original 8/26/2009 “review” is reprinted below.

Dean Anthony’s Express
August 26, 2009

The folks in Boca Raton just-lucked out…let me explain.

Dean Anthony’s is a “mom & pop” red sauce Italian joint which currently has 1 full- restaurant in Wellington and 1 full-restaurant in Boynton Beach. Two days ago…in a real-small Boca Raton strip center a Dean Anthony’s Express opened… which if you forget about a few window-counter seats, is a takeout-only joint.

Over the years, I must have eaten in the Dean Anthony’s restaurants at least 10 times…I rank these joints right up there with the “best” in the mom & pop South Florida Italian category. By the way, before the Jeff Eats’ website crashed a few years ago, there was a very favorable review on the full-restaurants. On my to do list, is a revisit for an updated “opinion”…

Last night, I tried Dean Anthony’s Express…the menu is loaded with appetizers, salads, pastas, sandwiches, chicken wings (something like 12 different sauces), entrees, pizzas… I did a plain pizza, penne alla vodka, chicken parmigiana, greek salad, garlic rolls, cheese calzone, chicken wings (honey garlic), meatballs-spaghetti…everything I “sampled” was real-good. Gourmet food? Now, let’s not play dopey here! This is a takeout red- sauce -joint, but I am telling you, that give or take a handful of restaurants, this Dean Anthony’s Express is as good as neighborhood takeout gets. One thing that I gotta single out here for special treatment, the pizza…plain old slice with sauce/cheese—one of the best slices I have had down here in South Florida…let’s call it a real NY slice.

As for prices…strictly neighborhood prices. 10 wings $7.99–Greek salad (enough for 2) $9.99–a large pizza goes for $13.99. You definitely won’t go broke ordering from this joint.

You folks in Boca Raton really lucked out…I am telling you, that the next time you want takeout, you want to give Dean Anthony’s a try.

The joint is open Monday-Sarurday 11am-9pm and Sunday 3pm-9pm.

Starbucks Sued by Country’s Largest Mall Operator

Just read this QSR Magazine “article” (qsrmagazine.com).

Thought that you would-be lawyers out there might find it interesting!

Starbucks Sued by Country’s Largest Mall Operator
August 30, 2017
QSR Magazine
by Danny Klein,
Claiming that the concept isn’t actually losing money, Simon Property Group Inc., the country’s largest mall operator, is suing Starbucks Corp. over its decision to shutter Teavana retail stores in its U.S. malls.

The Indianapolis-based company filed suit August 21 regarding the closure of 78 Teavana stores. Starbucks announced in July it plans to cut the chord on all 379 units across the country. The reason being sagging financials, which have hurt the java giant’s bottom line in recent quarters. In April, Starbucks revealed it was launching “a review process … to take clear action to improve the performance of our Teavana mall store portfolio.” The rate of decline at retail stores struggled through the holiday season and was worse through the second quarter than Starbucks forecasted.

During the company’s ensuing financial release, a third-quarter that saw global comparable-store sales increase 4 percent, U.S. comp-store sales grow 5 percent, and net income fall to $691.6 million from $754.1 million in the prior year quarter, Starbucks made the news official.

“As reported on the Q2 call, many of the company’s principally mall-based Teavana retail stores have been persistently underperforming. Following a strategic review of the Teavana store business, the company concluded that despite efforts to reverse the trend through creative merchandising and new store designs, the underperformance was likely to continue,” Starbucks said in a statement at the time.

But Simon Property Group sees a different story. The company believes Teavana is simply not growing fast enough to fit into Starbucks’ overall business goals.

“Starbucks’ decision to close its Teavana stores is simply an effort to further increase its economic gains at the expense of others,” Simon said in the suit, filed by Indianapolis-based law firm Barnes & Thornburg LLP and reported by the Indianapolis Business Journal. “Starbucks does not contend that Simon breached any lease or that Starbucks cannot remain viable if it continues to honor its promises in its leases for stores in Simon’s shopping centers. Instead, Starbucks simply believes it can make more money if it violates the leases than if it honored its contractual promises and obligations.”

Starbucks said the closures will mostly take place in the spring of 2018. Simon Property is contesting this point as well. The company said Starbucks indicated that it intends to shutter the units no later than December 31. Per The Indianapolis Business Journal, the mall landlord said only two of its 78 Teavana leases expire prior to spring and the rest extend as far as January 2027.

Simon Property said in the suit that Teavana’s fate shouldn’t be compared to that of some big-box retailers struggling to stay open. When it was announced, Starbucks’ 2012 acquisition of Teavana for $620 million was the largest in company history. And as recent as a year ago, the suit claims, Starbucks was touting success within its tea business.

The suit said many companies, such as Sears, Macy’s, and Sports Authority, have closed stores to avoid bankruptcy and “that staying open and fulfilling their leases would cause them financial ruin.”

“That obviously is not the case with Starbucks, which is one of the largest and most recognized companies in the world,” the suit continued.

Starbucks has mentioned it has no plans to remove Teavana from its shelves, and that the product remains popular in-store, especially overseas in Japan and China, where sales ballooned 40 percent in the second quarter.

The suit, which did not specific how much it was seeking from Starbucks, said the company opened 575 net new stores in the third quarter, which points to its overall health and ability to keep the Teavana retail business afloat.

A Starbucks spokesperson told WBAA it is “working to resolve this dispute.”

Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish?

In “Too Jewish?”, Avi Hoffman begins the exploration of his Jewish roots, and now that he has had over two thousand performances nationwide, he has discovered that audiences throughout North America can identify with the humor and music of his upbringing. Jews and non-Jews alike, laugh and cry with Avi, as he takes them on a journey through his history, relating stories of his family’s immigrant background and the culture within which he was raised. He has discovered the “lost treasures” of Jewish comedy and music. He has found the songs and comedy routines that entertained hundreds of thousands of people from the Catskills to Miami Beach, from Carnegie Hall to Yiddish Vaudeville.

Avi introduces performers, that were thev biggest stars of the 40s, 50s, and 60s, whose jokes, stories, and songs served as a bridge between the old world and the new, and are now completely unknown to contemporary audiences; only vague memories to those who lived through that era. he re-creates the persona of the great grandfather of stand-up comedy, the Jewish Vaudevillian Menashe Skulnick.

Avi Hoffman recreates and rediscovers the wonderful music, comedy, and pathos of the extraordinary period of creativity that began with the immigrants and continued with their children. A time that was to become the breeding ground for the great comedians of our time- Henny Youngman, Milton Berle, The Marx Brothers, Rodney Dangerfield, Mel Brooks & Carl Reiner, Woody Allen and the hundreds of others that were influenced and inspired during those years.

This award winning performance was taped live at the Westside Theatre in NY, and has received critical acclaim nationwide.
