Christmas Day 2014 + 2 Reformed Jews formerly from Brooklyn = Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats giving the nod to Chef Tai’s this year.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about here, I give up!

Jeff Eats’ 11/30/2010 Chef Tai’s “review” is reprinted down below.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Chef Tai’s…it’s a “mom & pop” takeout only Chinese joint, located in a big old-huge crappy strip center and it makes delicious stuff.

Chef Tai’s is a Chinese takeout-only joint in Boca Raton…surprise-surprise (courtesy Gomer Pyle), it is located in a “bombed-out” shopping center- that you probably wouldn’t drive into in a million years. That said…Chef Tai’s makes some delicious stuff. I heard about Chef Tai’s about 5 months ago– have gotten food four times…haven’t been disappointed even once.

Delicious- egg rolls, fried dumplings, bbq ribs, general tso’s chicken, roast pork fried rice, shrimp with black bean sauce, pepper steak.

You can check menu/prices at www.bocamenus.com.

Based on Jeff Eat’s patent-pending “Brooklyn Chinese Food Taste Test”- I gotta give Chef Tai’s a top-notch rating. Trust me on this, the food is really good.

Chef Tai’s is open Monday-Saturday 11am-9pm, closed on Sunday.

Son Jeff Eats just told Jeff Eats a story…

About a month ago on a real cold night, Son Jeff Eats had just picked up a to-go-order… pastrami on rye ($18.50)-chopped liver on rye ($14.95)-order of French fries ($5.95) from the legendary 2nd Ave Deli in NYC. As he left the restaurant, a homeless-man walked up to him looking- for spare change…Son Jeff Eats in reply, said- ” Here take this bag, its got French fries and a couple of sandwiches”…the homeless man asked “What kind of sandwiches” and Son Jeff Eats replied, “pastrami and chopped liver”…The homeless man said- “I don’t want them, I got to watch my cholesterol” and walked away.

You can check 2nd Ave Deli’s menu at secondavedeli.com.

***** Sorrisi, 5550 Northwest 40th Street, Coconut Creek, Florida 33073, (954) 935-6688.

The other night Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple ate at- Sorrisi which is an Italain restaurant located in the Seminole Casino in Coconut Creek. Just so you know, the bill was “comped” by the casino based on our black-jack play. So we ate on the arm, but not as Jeff Eats.

Short and to the point, Sorrisi is an “okay” restaurant…ordered dishes included-fried calamari ($9), Caesar salad ($7), penne alla vodka ($15), margherita pizza ($11-personal size–wood fired), chicken parmigiana ($18 with pasta side), spaghetti and meatballs ($17) meat lasagna ($19)-and like I just said, Sorrisi is an okay-joint…but, nothing really special is going on there.

So…

We get a “comp”…we use the “comp” at Sorrisi- no “comp” we don’t go-driving no 17 miles-one way (you can fill in your own number) to eat there… you’re already in the casino, no “comp”- you’re hungry, you weigh your eating options (just so you know -Jeff Eats is being overly dramatic here), maybe you do Sorrisi, maybe you do the casino’s deli, maybe you do the casino’s steak joint, maybe you do the casino’s outdoor tiki bar, maybe you do the casino’s buffet…..

To close it out for you-handsome restaurant, full bar, inside seating/inside patio seating, decent enough menu/food, casino (captured audience) prices- but nothing even close to approaching highway robbery, good service and you can wear your tee shirt/shorts/flip flop ensemble.

One last thought…Did you ever notice that when the word “BUT” is used in a sentence the next part of the sentence ain’t good news? For example…Hey Jeff Eats you look great, BUT your hair looks like crap. Or, how about- Hey Joey, you got the promotion, BUT your dog just got hit by a car and died.

Sorrisi is open Tuesday-Thursday 5pm-11pm, Sunday 3pm-10pm, closed on Monday.

Jimmy Shubert (Fort Lauderdale Improv- Fort Lauderdale)

* Jimmy Shubert.

Last night Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats caught a couple of comedian Jimmy Shubert tickets on goldstar.com for 8 bucks a piece-and had an absolutely great time at his 7pm Improv-show. Throw in 2 glasses of wine, 1 Diet Coke, 1 Coke, burger sliders appetizer, garlic chicken wings appetizer, French fries- total “all in” $66 for the whole night. For you non-math majors out there, that’s $33 a person-which in any language other than Swahili is a bargain!

Purpose of this essay…

1. You gotta go see Jimmy Shubert the next time he plays Florida. The guy works ‘light blue” and is absolutely hysterical. To that end, you can follow his career at jimmyshubert.com.

2. On 8/26/14 Jeff Eats told you guys about Gold Star Events (goldstar.com)- a site that has all kinds of discount show/concert tickets. Jeff Eats got $17 tickets for 8 bucks a piece. So the moral of this part of the story, you should follow goldtsar.com unless you’re like my friend Vance who has nothing but cash to burn.

3. The Fort Lauderdale Improv has some -great comedy-shows, very good-reasonably priced “bar” food/ drink and won’t have you working a second job to pay for your night out. You can follow- Fort Lauderdale Improv at improvftl.com.

Literally just this minute, Jeff Eats learned that-legendary Rocker-Joe Cocker has died at the age of 70.

One of the greats!

Not trying to sound like a broken record or nothing, but please-please-please…make it your business to go and see the GREAT ENTERTAINERS/BANDS of the 50s-60s-70s when they “play” South Florida…trust Jeff Eats when I tell you, that you’ll be glad that you did!

Obama: North Korea’s hack not war, but “cybervandalism”

* Obama: North Korea’s hack not war, but “cybervandalism.”

If you hack into Jeffeats.com that’s vandalism! Steal the Show-Time section from my Sun Sentinel on my lawn- maybe that’s vandalism!

“SONY” ain’t vandalism.

By the way, this morning Jeff Eats mailed a check for $1,485.00 to Humana to pay Mrs. Jeff Eats’ 1/15’s monthly medical premium…last month the same coverage cost $625.00.

To put this-all in food blog terms-

A waiter spits in your food…vandal. A waiter breaks into your home, steals everything you have and then threatens to kill you if you don’t pay him ransom…You _______(you fill in the blank) the waiter.

The owner of a restaurant tells you that he is revamping his menu, but don’t worry- the $6.25 burger will still only cost $6.25. But, when you read the new menu, the $6.25 burger now costs $14.85. You __________(you fill in the blank) the owner.

Hopefully the next person will be more honest and not such a pussy!

***** Augy’s Pizza Restaurant.

Augy’s Pizza Restaurant…another Jeff Eats’ “out of sight, out of mind” joint.

Just that simple, Jeff Eats very rarely travels on Boca Raton Boulevard.

Long story short, ate at Augy’s last night and the food was absolute dynamite.

Reprinted below is Jeff Eats’ 1/7/10 essay on Augy’s Pizza Restaurant.

If you’re looking for delicious reasonably priced mom & pop red sauce stuff, tons of garlic rolls, Coca Cola refills up the wazoo, delightful waitresses-counter folks and owners- then Augy’s is definitely for you!

You can check menu/prices at Augys.com.

***** Augy’s Pizza Restaurant, 1501 Northwest Boca Raton Boulevard, Boca Raton, Florida 33432 (561) 368-1330.

Do me a big a big favor and check my Augy’s Pizza Restaurant review which I did back on July 23, 2008…it will save me from doing some typing here.

Augy’s is a “mom & pop” red sauce Italian joint…it has been around for something like 1,000 years.

That 2008 review told you…that a few years ago the “original” owners sold the joint to new guys, blah blah, blah…

Anyway…to make a long story–short…the old owners are BACK running the joint. During the past 4 weeks, I have eaten in Augy’s three times and the food has been outrageously good—in fact, better than ever. Some of the dishes that I have “sampled”… chicken marsala, bone in chicken cacciatore, pizza, veal parmigiana, bone in chicken scarpiello, shrimp scampi, garlic bread (not garlic knots), minestrone soup…and I must tell you, Augy’s is right up there with the best mama-poppa Italian joints in South Florida. By the way, they currently have a $20 dinner special…soup or salad, appetizer, entree, pasta side, dessert. They also have a Monday-Friday lunch buffet of pizzas–subs-salads for something like 5 bucks.

If you haven’t eaten in Augy’s…you gotta give it a shot. Nothing fancy here…but I am telling you– big portions, reasonable prices and the food is delicious.

Augy’s is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

Joker’s Wild 2015 Comedy Series (Mardi Gras Casino-Hallandale Beach)

Posted on December 22nd, 2014 · Hallandale Beach Mediterranean/Greek · 2 Comments »

* Joker’s Wild 2015 Comedy Series.

Jeff Eats has seen all 7-comedians scheduled to appear in this year’s Comedy Series…trust me, they are all-real funny!

If the truth be told, I’ve seen Bobby Collins-5 times…and Bob Nelson 3 times. Absolutely love these guys- they just know how to crack-me-up.

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats (as my Great Aunt Alva use to say- “God be willing”) are planning on catching all 3-shows.

You can catch tickets at mardigrascasinofl.com.

For what it’s worth, every so often “folks” like GROUPON.COM, GOLDSTAR.COM, LIVINGSOCIAL.COM run ticket-deals on- shows-just like these. Now, not talking out of school or nothing, but just maybe-not being the “early-bird catches the first worm” here-may work to your advantage, if you get my drift!
