* Mr. Potato Head.

Just in case one-day you find yourself on Jeopardy!

from mom.me

Mr. Potato Head
This famous spud was the first toy to be advertised on television. From 1952 to 1963 parents had to provide their kids with actual potatoes to use as Mr. Potato Head’s body. Hasbro began manufacturing the plastic potato body that currently comes in the box in 1964.

Just between Jeff Eats and you guys, whenever I have to spell/type the word potato- I “see” former Vice President Dan Quayle’s face…do you guys have the same reaction?

***** Jr’s Gourmet Burgers, 7 Westward Drive, Miami Springs, Florida 33166, (786) 360-5347.

Here’s another Jeff Eats’ “out of sight out of mind” joint for you…Jr’s Gourmet Burgers in Miami Springs.

First told you guys about this hole in the wall burger joint- on 4/9/12 (that tale is down below)- hadn’t been back since…long story short, ate dinner there last night and I gotta tell you the bacon cheeseburger, chicken breast sandwich, onion rings, sweet potato fries, french fries were all -right on the money!

This joint is an absolute winner…only problem I got with it, it’s not in my neighborhood- thus the out of sight out of mind-designation.

No fooling here, outrageously delicious burgers…

***** Jr’s Gourmet Burgers, 7 Westward Drive, Miami Springs, Florida 33166, (786) 360-5347.

First, if you look, I got this joint listed as being in Miami Lakes, but it’s really in Miami Springs…don’t have a Miami Springs “category”—so you now know the city where this terrific “mom & pop” hole-in the wall burger joint is located.

One of my favorite meals is a cheeseburger–fries smothered in Ketchup–Coca Cola. Well let me tell you, Jr’s makes delicious burgers and fries. When you check Jr’s menu at www.jrsburgers.com you will find that the joint has 3- sized flat grilled burgers, 1/3 lb, 1/2 lb, 1 lb…handful of toppings…handful of sandwiches…handful of hot dogs…handful of salads—end of story. If I got it right, the pop-Jr is the “cook” and the wife is the wait-staff.

Like I said a few seconds ago–delicious burgers and fries. For the record, I did a 1/3er with American cheese ($6.99) and fries ($1.50). Let me make this real-simple, the burger and fries are right up there with the best currently out there in the South Florida market. Really-just that simple!

Jr’s is open Monday-Thursday 11am-9pm, Saturday 11am-10pm, closed on Sunday.

Frazier/Ali-they’ll be talking about that one forever!

Mayweather/Pacquiao- do you really care?

Jeff Eats will bet you a buck right now, that at least 97% of you guys can’t even tell me what “weight division” Mayweather/Pacquiao is in!

Today’s- Social Media makes it so easy to make nothing into something…it’s really scary!

America’s Best 25 College Bars

Posted on April 16th, 2015 · American Music/Events/Other · 3 Comments »

* America’s Best 25 College Bars.

This column is for you guys- who are “picking” colleges for your kids (or for that matter- yourselves) to go to-next-Fall!

Jeff Eats did some heavy-duty research (actually I found the list on dailymeal.com) on what are considered- America’s best 25-college bars.

In looking at the list, I found that 3 (#2, #4, #15) of the top 25 BARS were in FLORIDA…so there you go! and- you thought that Florida just- had great weather, great beaches and great scam artists…

By the way, The Boot/Tulane University in Louisiana was #1… Now you know why Tulane’s tuition is soooo high!

Hope this column helps you out with picking a school to go to!

You can catch the whole list at dailymeal.com.

4/25. Bullwinkle’s Saloon – Florida State University – Tallahassee, Florida
Since 1979, Bullwinkle’s Saloon has been catering to the needs, and mouths, of the Florida State Seminoles. Bullwinkle’s ranked so high on the list thanks to its convenient location to campus, live rock and roll band, massive dance floor, and outside double deck area. And for $10, students can drink as much as they want during the week. How can you top that drink special?

Anyone from Florida knows that the Gators are big on football and drinking. With a wide range of college bars in Gainesville, how could you choose the best? The Salty Dog Saloon, a 50-year old establishment, stands out in the crowd with its jukebox, 50-cent drink happy hour and every Sunday’s 2-for-1 mimosa special. For less than $10, the Salty Dog’s patrons can get the most booze for their buck.

2/25. Knight Library – University of Central Florida – Orlando, Florida
A ranked list of the best college bars in America would not be complete without the University of Central Florida’s Knight Library. The general size of the establishment is impressive in itself; students have access to three full bars, a giant dance floor, a patio bar, and even VIP sections. Not a big dancer or drinker? Knight Library has darts, customized beer pong tables, and corn hole boards to get you entertained. Still not impressed? An Island Oasis frozen drink machine is the newest addition to the bar.

1/25. And the title of the best college bar in America goes to none other than The Boot, a Tulane favorite. If you’re a broke college student, and only have a couple of quarters to spare, you have enough for a drink at 50-cent drink night at The Boot. The Knight Library was originally tied with this college bar, but in the end, location was the deciding factor. Our panel of college students came to a consensus that the Boot and the city of New Orleans, especially during Mardi Gras, is the ideal place to throw back a few drinks and celebrate four years of relative freedom.

***** Top Burger.

Jeff Eats first told you guys about this fast food hole in the wall- burger joint way back on October 19, 2012 (that tale is reprinted down below)…

Long story short, hadn’t been back until yesterday afternoon- and I gotta tell you, Top Burger is still serving-up delicious cheeseburgers and fresh handcut French fries …

Trust me on this one, this is a good joint to catch a burger at!

By the way, there are now 2- Top Burger joints…1 (the original)- 109 Northeast 1st Avenue, Miami and 1- 764 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach.

You can check topburger.com for menu/prices/info.

Top Burger…small- hole in the wall fast food burger joint in Miami. Handful of formica tables and counter seating.

Top Burger opened in August, 2012…you can check menu/prices/photos at http://topburger.com.

Let me make this one real short and real simple…the grilled top cheese burger/french fries were delicious.

Like Jeff Eats mentioned a few seconds ago, the joint has been in business for only a few months… nothing “original” going on here—burgers, fries, hot dogs, chicken breast sandwiches, shakes.

You know and I know that eventually this game of fast food burgers “musical chairs” is gonna end real-badly for most of the joints in this space. Only time will tell if Top Burger can successfully carve out a niche for itself.

Top Burger is open Monday-Friday 11am-5pm, Saturday 11am-10pm, closed on Sunday.

Pubgrill (Cutler Bay)

***** Pubgrill, 18503 South Dixie Highway, Cutler Bay, Florida 33157, (305) 253-4996.

For our purposes let’s call Pubgrill a neighborhood sports-bar (handful of beers on tap and bottled craft beers)…tvs, booth/table seating.

Pubgrill is open Monday-Friday 11am-11pm, Saturday- Sunday 8am-11pm (breakfast is served).

Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple recently gave this joint a shot for dinner and I gotta tell you, Pubgrill’s food absolutely killed!

Trust me when I tell you, that the French onion burger, spicy honey mustard grilled wings, garlic bbq grilled wings, French onion soup, blackened mahi on onion challah bread, fried calamari, Caesar salad, philly cheesesteak sub (Pubgrill calls it a hoagie), truffle mac n’cheese, French fries, mashed potatoes- were all delicious…

Pubgrill is definitely not serving-up typical-standard sports’ bar stuff…somebody (somebodies?) in its kitchen really knows how to cook!

Like many of the joints that Jeff Eats “finds”- “tries”- whatever you wanna call it- this Pubgrill joint is a loooong-way from my Boca Raton home- All I can tell you- if this joint was in my neighborhood, Jeff Eats would definitely be a real steady customer. The food, service, prices, vibe were all right on the money!

The 4 Peace Band

***** The 4 Peace Band.

Yesterday (don’t even ask!) Jeff Eats spent 2 hours, 38 minutes and 11 seconds-at the Delray Affair in Delray Beach…not gonna go into details, but something like 1,000 degrees in the shade on Atlantic Avenue, along with 409,005 of my closest friends, looking at 86,940 booths filled with God Only Knows What!

Anyway…

One of the musical acts “booked” was local South Florida 60’s-70’s cover band- The 4 Peace Band…

Long story short, while Mrs. Jeff Eats “strolled” the Affair, Jeff Eats got to watch/listen to The 4 Peace Band… and I gotta tell you that this band killed! Fronted by lead singer Jason Colannino- The 4 Peace Band played absolutely (to name but a few) first-rate Beatles, Stones, Eagles, Steely Dan, Crosby Stills & Nash covers.

Just between you and Jeff Eats, I was so impressed with this band, that this morning I passed The 4 Peace Band’s “info” onto several local booking agents!

That’s the story.

You can check the band-out at jasoncolannino.com.

Latest Review: 5/2/12

Jeff Eats absolutely loves this “faux” 50’s joint/drugstore. The $7.99 meatloaf “special” is an absolute homerun.

Printed down below is my “original” 5/2/12 Johnny’s Soda & Luncheonette story.
_________________
***** Johnny’s Soda Fountain & Luncheonette, 45 Curtiss Parkway, Miami Springs, Florida 33166, (786) 953-5553.

If a 1950’s “looking” diner located in a Miami Springs pharmacy is your game…get ready to play.

Last week I had lunch at Johnny’s Soda Fountain & Luncheonette which is located in the Miami Springs Pharmacy. You can do the Googling here, but back in 1946 a guy named John Stadnik opened a drug store in Miami Springs…and like many of its brethern of the time, it had both a pharmacy and luncheonette in it. To make a long story short, the pharmacy “survived” but the luncheonette closed in 1965. Fast forward to 2010- the Miami Springs Pharmacy is still owned by the Stadnik Family– and Carol, John Stadnik’s daughter decides to “re-open” the luncheonette naming it Johnny’s Soda Fountain & Luncheonette.

So- you know what this joint is all about, the PHARMACY still has the original 1946-look…while-Johnny’s is 1950’s faux-stuff ala Johnny Rockets. For our purposes, this is a mom & pop diner—with an interesting “story” in a really cool location.

Johnny’s menu isn’t huge, but I’m sure you’ll find something to eat…handful of breakfast items–same for salads/sandwiches/burgers/hot dogs/entrees/daily specials/sundaes & shakes. Like I said a few seconds ago, I did lunch…cheeseburger, grilled chicken breast sandwich, french fries, vanilla ice cream/heath bar shake.

Now for the results…I loved the look of the whole joint. The pharmacy and luncheonette are separated by a half-wall divider. Now I know and you know (because I told you)–that the diner decor is a faux-deal, but it’s still cool and real mom & popish…if Johnny Rockets’ decor is a Bentley, Johnny’s is a really used Honda. As for the food, imagine if you made the stuff at home. I appreciate that we may get some-waaaay different results here, but I do make a real good cheeseburger and Mrs. Jeff Eats can muster up a decent enough grilled chicken breast…as for the fries, Johnny’s were ok– like mine- they came out of a frozen package. The shake wasn’t exactly in the league of a Dairy Queen’s Blizzard, but I definitely could handle 2-3 of Johnny’s a week. For the record, over the years Jeff Eats has tried to “duplicate” blizzards at home and has failed miserably.

Johnny’s Soda Fountain & Luncheonette is my kinda of a joint…I’m a sucker for black & white tiled floors, yellow counter stools and red & white checked tablecloths.

Johnny’s is open Monday-Saturday 8am-8pm, Sunday 9am-3pm.
