The hair was long, the skirts were short and tie-dye ruled the scene! Spend the night with an epic lineup of classic rock greats presenting music from the great era of the 1960’s and 70’s. Performances by Blue Oyster Cult, The Doors’ guitarist Robby Krieger and psychedelic foursome Vanilla Fudge. Sip on cooling beverage at one of our bars or sample delicious local food in between sets – concessions and drinks served all evening to round out an already awesome concert.

Blue Oyster Cult

Spanning three decades, Blue Öyster Cult has a long and storied history, including hits such as “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”, “Godzilla” and “Burnin’ for You”. The band has sold over 24 million albums worldwide, including 7 million in the United States alone. They got their start in the late ’60s on Long Island, New York, as the Soft White Underbelly, but each member had been involved in bands previously in high school and college, before ending up in the “right place at the right time” to create the beginnings of Blue Öyster Cult.
View Blue Öyster Cult’s website.

Robby Krieger of The Doors

Krieger’s energetic fingerstyle approach to the electric guitar, broad musical tastes, and songwriting helped establish the Doors as a successful rock band in the 1960’s and beyond. As the guitarist, and arguably the band’s secret weapon, he wrote or co-wrote many of the band’s songs, including “Light My Fire”, “Love Me Two Times”, “Touch Me”, and “Love Her Madly”. Krieger has performed alongside band members from Blue Oyster Cult, Oingo Boingo, The Black Crowes, Fuel, The Cult and Gov’t Mule. Rolling Stone has named him one of the 100 best guitarists of all time. Visit Robby Krieger’s website.

Vanilla Fudge

Still touring today, Vanilla Fudge retains their dynamic, psychedelic sound that helped them rise to stardom in the 1960’s. The band successfully covered of “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” by The Supremes, warping the song into a slowed-down, hard rocking version that put them in the Top 10. The band has been cited as “one of the few American links between psychedelia and what soon became heavy metal.” In 2007, they went back into the studio to record a cover of Out Through the In Door, the acclaimed Led Zeppelin album. Vanilla Fudge has been featured on hit TV shows such as Mad Men and The Sopranos. Most recently, the band returned to TV with a appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, who called them “a legendary rock ‘n’ roll band who are still as heavy as ever.”

This is a real simple one.

Donut Gallery has been around for 35 years. Donut Gallery has a counter and 24-stools to sit at. Donut Gallery doesn’t have donuts. Donut Gallery is a great “hole in the wall” breakfast/lunch joint which is open 7-days a week 5:30am-3pm. Donut Gallery’s “house special” is a toasted buttered English muffin topped with bacon, ham, American cheese, egg and tomato…that is not to be missed.

You can check menu/prices/info at donutgallery.com.

Donut Gallery is my kind of joint! It does have one fault it’s- Cash Only!

The 101 Best Burgers in America

“Our expert panel has spoken. Did your local favorite make the list?

June 4, 2015 | 03:21 AM By Kate Kolenda, Editor

This year’s list of the best burgers in America spans the country, from sea to shining sea.

The burger is one of the staples of American popular cuisine. The simple recipe allows for considerable creativity from the chef who’s making it, and there are thousands of variations, from one end of the country to the other. And when done properly, there are few foods more delicious.

The 101 Best Burgers in America

In a recent interview, meat-blending master Pat LaFrieda shared some of the key characteristics of the foundation of a great burger: the patty. LaFrieda has found that “An eight-ounce burger, inch-thick, is perfect for a barbecue — it can get a good sear without overcooking it.” What it’s actually made of, or not made of, matters, too; the butcher likes to keep it an all-beef affair and thinks that mixing in additions such as beans and red peppers makes it “taste like meatloaf. It no longer tastes like a burger.” Finally, not all meat blends are created equal, and he warned us that the meat-to-fat ratio should be 80/20 because “Anything else is a marketing ploy.”

We at The Daily Meal began ranking our country’s burgers back in 2013, when we detailed what we had found to be the 40 best, and last year, we took it up to a comprehensive 101. In order to compile this year’s ranking, we assembled a list of nearly 250 burgers from all across the country, from Hollywood, Florida, to Anchorage, Alaska. Building upon last year’s suggestions from various authorities on the subject, we dug through online reviews and combed existing best-of lists, both in print and online, that were published since our 2014 burger ranking. Even though each of the burgers we found was unique, certain qualities were universal must-haves: high-quality beef (you’ll find no turkey or black bean burgers here), proper seasoning, well-proportioned components, and an overall attention to detail that many would call “making it with love.” As usual, we didn’t include large chains like Shake Shack and In-N-Out — we celebrated the best chain burgers earlier this year — choosing instead to focus on smaller-time restaurant owners. We compiled a survey which was then taken by a panel of 50 noted writers, journalists, bloggers, and culinary authorities from across the country, asking them to vote for their favorites, limited to the ones that they’ve tried.

We divided these burgers by region and compiled a survey that was taken by a panel of 70 noted writers, journalists, bloggers, and other culinary authorities from across the country, among them Hamburger America author George Motz, along with the knowledgeable Daily Meal staff, City Editors, and contributors. Participants were asked to vote for their favorites, limiting themselves to places they’ve actually visited. We tallied the results, and the 101 burgers that received the most votes are the ones you’ll find in this story.

This year’s list spans the country, from sea to shining sea. New York City gained the most ground over last year, garnering three new spots to lead the way with 18 entries. Los Angeles edged up just slightly with one new spot to claim eight burgers joints on the list. Texas gained substantial ground; last year, there were only six burgers from the state that made the cut, whereas this year, there are five in Austin, two in Houston, and three others from smaller towns, which brings the grand total number of spots given to Lone Star State burgers to 10. Atlanta and Philadelphia each lost two spots since last year, winning three each out of 101. And San Francisco and Seattle lost ground as well. But great burgers aren’t limited to just big cities; other locations include Hackensack, New Jersey; Lake Oswego, Oregon; Meriden, Connecticut; Roanoke, Virginia; and Salina, Kansas.

Regionally, the Midwest slid from eight spots to 11 this year and the Southeast also lost ground, going from 27 to 21 spots. Conversely, the Northeast held steady at 30 entries, the West gained four to bring its total to 23, and the biggest gain was seen in the Southwest, which doubled its representation from eight spots to 16.

One question is: Why do burgers hold such a high place in the American culinary psyche? We think Mr. Motz said it best when he told us that “Americans are intensely proud of their hamburger heritage, probably because it’s widely known that the burger is an American invention. The burger also carries a lot of weight in the nostalgia department and is the ultimate portable comfort food available everywhere.” So, did your local favorite make the list? (If not, let us know and we’ll add it to our list to consider next year.) What about that burger you crave from that certain spot back in your hometown? You’ll just have to read on to find out.

The S & S Diner has been around since 1938.

Jeff Eats is thinking that just maybe this 18 seat horseshoe counter diner-knows what it’s doing!

ss2

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, over the past 5 years- I must have eaten breakfast/lunch at S & S something like 20 times. Not for nothing, but everything this joint makes is delicious!

Since this is a DISH OF THE WEEK- tale, I gotta tell you, that S & S Deluxe Burger is off the chart…this is DINER food at it’s best!

If you are into the “mom & pop” diner-concept…you must try S & S.

***** S & S Diner, 1757 Northeast 2nd Avenue, Miami, Florida 33132, (305) 373-4291.

S & S Diner is a REAL DINER…the joint has been around since 1938, has no booths or tables…customers sit at an 18 seat horseshoe counter. This is a cash only joint. The only thing that “tells” you that it’s 2010 is a flat screen tv…and of course the prices—no 5 cent coffee.

The way I figure it, if a joint has been around for something like 72 years, just maybe it’s doing something right–don’t ya think?

S & S does breakfast, lunch, early dinner…pleny of breakfast stuff, sandwiches, burgers, salads and “daily specials” like meatloaf and turkey.

Like I said before–real diner. Nothing fancy here…just solid good diner food.

S & S is open Monday-Friday 6am-6pm and Saturday-Sunday 6am-2pm.

Every Oreo Cookie Flavor, Ranked

* Every Oreo Cookie Flavor, Ranked.

Jeff Eats recently came across this “Every Oreo Cookie Flavor, Ranked” article on thrillist.com…I’m kinda thinking that lists-like this come-about- when somebody has got way too much time on his/or her hands.

To be perfectly honest with you guys, Jeff Eats really-didn’t know that all of these Oreo “flavors” even existed…

As they say in Helsinki…You live and you learn!

Every Oreo Cookie Flavor, Ranked
Published on 7/27/2015
By Lee Breslouer

Lee Breslouer/Thrillist

Other than craft beer in a can, The Bachelorette, and the NFL, there is no greater American invention than the Oreo. But every Oreo is not created equal. There are actually a stunning 25 flavors, some of which bear little to no resemblance to the cookie your grandparents loved. And some that do, because they probably ate Hydrox.

Which of the 25 Oreo (fun fact: the plural of Oreo is “Oreo”) is the best? To find out, I tracked down every available flavor, including the harder-to-find ones on Amazon, eBay, and Walmart.com. No Fudge Cremes though — we don’t consider them a true Oreo, what with all that fudge on top of them. Here they are, ranked from good to best.

25. Berry
I love Oreo. And I love my job. But I’m not dying for either. I’m severely allergic to strawberries, son! That said, who was clamoring for a strawberry/raspberry Oreo?

24. Mega Stuf (Golden Cookie)
See: chocolate cookie Mega Stuf (#23), with the added fact that the vanilla creme overpowers the subtle vanilla cookie (aka the Golden Cookie, which is how we’re referring to it in the rest of this ranking).

23. Mega Stuf (Chocolate Cookie)
When I go to an ice cream shop, I don’t ask them to spray a pound of whipped cream on my ice cream, because I’m an adult. I crave subtler flavors. The amount of creme here is just too much of a good thing.

22. Chocolate Creme (Golden Cookie)
Oh look, a golden sandwich cookie with chocolate creme in the middle. This might have blown people’s minds in the early aughts, but today’s consumers have birthday cake Oreo, Reese’s Oreo, and a bunch of other Oreo that take the Oreo formula to new heights and challenge what you think an Oreo actually is.

21. Chocolate Creme (Chocolate Cookie)
I love chocolate, and that’s the only flavor here. Chocolate cookies and chocolate creme. So I was expecting to love it… but that didn’t happen. Since the Oreo debuted, chocolate flavors have come a long way. I routinely eat 85% dark chocolate bars from national and local artisanal producers. The variety of chocolate out there has turned me, and much of America, into a chocolate snob. Nowadays, if you’re only giving me basic chocolate flavors, they better knock my socks off.

20. Birthday Cake (Chocolate Cookie)
This makes me sad about birthdays. And it’s strange to be typing that, because you’ll see another version of the same exact cookie that Oreo made much higher in this ranking. The chocolate and birthday sprinkle-laden creme just don’t mix to create beautiful Oreo harmony here like they should. Instead, it feels like there was an accident at the Oreo factory and sprinkles accidentally were added to one of the more perfect cookies ever created.

19. Reduced Fat
“30% less fat than original Oreo!” the box exclaims. On the plus side, it tastes like a regular Oreo! But to me — either you eat an Oreo or you don’t. I don’t think this 30% fat reduction is making anyone less chubby, but whatever helps you sleep at night.

18. Oreo Thins (Mint Creme)
Something that has the words “thin” and “mint” in the name and isn’t a Thin Mint? That’s just mean. This is as much a Thin Mint as a wax figure in Madame Tussaud’s is the real thing.

17. Regular Oreo
I’m bored with these. As a kid, I wanted nothing more than for my mom to bring home normal, American-as-apple-pie Oreo cookies. I never got that wish, and ended up eating them at the homes of less-healthy families. As an adult, I’ve eaten a billion different flavors of these things, and have found the original to be lacking. I’m not saying the two chocolate cookies and vanilla aren’t still delicious, but I’ve changed, Oreo. And I need something more in a cookie.

16. Oreo Thins (Golden Cookie)
If for some reason I had forgotten what the consistency of a Nilla Wafer cookie felt like, I could be convinced that this was a Nilla Wafer cookie. And that’s not a bad thing. Crush these things up and put them in my banana pudding.

15. Mint
Refreshing! The mint has a pleasant aftertaste. And the chocolate cookie and the mint play off each other splendidly. The problem is that this hint of mint just makes me want to have some real mint action in the form of a mojito. An even bigger problem is that I’m supposed to be working and not drinking a mojito. Whatever, getting one anyways.

14. Lemon
This has two golden cookies sandwiched around lemon creme, which means it only resembles an Oreo in shape, and not at all in taste. It’s like a Vanilla Wafer someone spilled lemon juice on.

13. Golden
This is mad boring — it’s just a regular Oreo that’s subbed two chocolate cookies for two vanilla ones (aka the Golden Cookies). But I recognize its importance in the Oreo game, because without this cookie, you couldn’t get amazing other varieties that utilize the vanilla cookie. This is the Oreo lineup’s utility player, like Ben Zobrist of the Oakland A’s (or so Google tells me).

12. Heads or Tails Double Stuf
This is the Oreo for those indecisive jerks you know who can never make a decision. Do I eat the Golden Oreo or the plain? Oh, the struggles these people go through every day. Clearly Oreo is catering to these people, and this experiment is… actually a success. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that a vanilla cookie and a chocolate cookie go so well together.

11. Triple Double
This is a chocolate creme Oreo stacked on top of a vanilla creme Oreo with three chocolate Oreo cookies. It’s the Oreo version of a Big Mac. And it’s good, but holy geez when you take a bite, watch out for crumbs. I mean, it’s like a crumb bomb exploded in your kitchen. Or your bathroom, or wherever you hide when you feel guilty for eating a whole package of Oreo cookies.
related

10. Oreo Thins
“Awww, wook at the witty-bitty Oreo,” I definitely said to myself as I cradled this tiny version of the cookie. Then I bit into it and thought about this thin Oreo a little more. So, they’re just giving you less of the cookie you know and love? Why would I pay for that? Because sometimes less is more. You get all of that Oreo flavor, plus the possibility of eating a sleeve of these in one sitting: if I eat a regular Oreo or three, I’m usually set, but I can inhale a few handfuls of these and not even blink. More is more, too.

9. Double Stuf (Golden Cookie)
Exactly like the Double Stuf Oreo with chocolate cookies, but not as good. Still pretty good! If Mega Stuf is too much creme and normal Oreo is the right amount of creme, Double Stuf is a little more than the right amount of creme. That makes sense, right?

8. Double Stuf (Chocolate Cookie)
The Double Stuf Oreo is a uniquely American product. Nabisco went all McDonald’s on the Oreo and Super-Sized the creme. It’s an original product — I didn’t know I needed more creme in my Oreo until this came along. The only knock is that Eli Manning was once paid to endorse this product, and as a lifelong Eagles fan, I cannot in good conscience enjoy this. I mean, it’s good and everything, but I don’t like it.

7. Key Lime Pie
I opened many Oreo boxes to do this story, and I’ve not yet remarked on how the Oreo cookies smell. Probably because there’s not much of a scent. But the second you crack open these limited-edition suckers, the smell hits you. And it smells unmistakably like Key lime pie, or lime Powerade (of which I’m a huge fan). The taste is pretty dead on — I’m not getting a ton of action from the graham-flavored cookie, but the Key lime is very much there. There are even whipped cream notes in the back end. Nabisco must’ve done some serious cookie-science to create these flavors.

6. Peanut Butter
This Oreo is the new girlfriend of your friend who clearly only started dating her because she looks just like his ex — I say that because this is a straight up Reese’s Oreo clone. Because the Reese’s Oreo was a limited-time cookie, this is here in its place. Don’t worry, you can still find Reese’s Oreo on eBay and whatnot. Anyways, it falls a little short, because a copy will never be as good as the original. If Michael Keaton were an Oreo and his movie Multiplicity was about a guy who clones cookies again and again, this would be the second or third Michael Keaton — not super dumb, but also not the original. That said, you’ll always win points with me for combining chocolate and peanut butter.

5. S’mores
Oreo nails the marshmallow flavor here. One bite and I’m in front of a bonfire, being bitten by mosquitoes, surrounded by people I don’t like that much, wishing I was at home watching Family Matters. But seriously, the graham cracker cookie, the chocolate, and the marshmallow flavors here all combine with spectacular results.

4. Birthday Cake (Golden Cookie)
Pretty sure they melted down a birthday cake into a cookie, because I don’t know how else they nailed the taste so hard. If I didn’t know what I’d just eaten, the aftertaste would make me think I was just at a kid’s birthday party. It’s uncanny.

3. Oreo Mini
If I’d had these as a kid, I would have been obese. Now that I have them as an adult, I still might become obese unless I throw them away. As a kid, though, I’d have eaten them for breakfast floating in a bowl of milk, for lunch also floating in a bowl of milk, and for dinner I would’ve just shoveled handfuls into my face. They figured out how to pack all that Oreo flavor into a smaller package. Genius!

2. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup
Sure, this kind isn’t on supermarket shelves anymore, but you can easily track a box down online. And I recommend that you do. Because as I wrote in my taste-test last year, the cookie features “delicious, lingering Reese’s notes when you’re done eating the Oreo” — an aftertaste only superseded by lingering Reese’s notes when you’re done eating a Reese’s. But you’re not! You get that glorious Oreo crunch and a tasty peanut butter flavor. It doesn’t get much better than this. Unless it’s the Oreo at #1.

1. Reese’s Oreo Mini
I could eat a million of these. OK, who am I kidding, I ate a million of these. I bought the family-size box and now I probably weigh as much as an entire American family. These are bite-sized peanut butter/chocolate bombs that have that signature Oreo crunch, and they are incredible. I want to blend them into a milkshake. I want to fashion a hat made out of these and eat one or two from my head whenever I need a snack. I want to hold this box close to my heart so that its goodness can repair the damage the world has done to it. Bottom line: get thee to your local supermarket.

***** Knucklehead Burgers, 4900 South University Drive, Davie, Florida 33328, (954) 434-0013.

Better late than never…Way-back on August 10, 2012, Jeff Eats promised you guys that I would try Nucklehead Burgers which at the time was a fast food hamburger joint that had just opened in Davie- and report back…My bad! Knucklehead slipped through the cracks, but I did get there yesterday for lunch…

Yesterday’s lunch had Jeff Eats “doing” cheeseburger, french fries, hot dog, onion rings…everything was right on the money! Just between you guys and Jeff Eats-this Knucklehead joint-is right up there with South Florida players like Shake Shack, Five Guys, BurgerFi-just to name but a few!

Real simple, I really enjoyed Knucklehead Burgers and if it was by-my-house (which it isn’t) in Boca Raton, Jeff Eats would be a real steady customer.

Before I turn you guys over to knuckleheadburgers.com for menu/prices/info- besides having hamburgers and hot dogs- the joint’s menu has a handful of sandwiches/salads/wings so the “party poopers” in your car-who don’t eat or for that matter -just don’t like hamburgers and hot dogs, are covered!

Knucklehead Burgers is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-10pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm.

There are things in life that are “certain.”

1. When Jeff Eats buys a stock, the next tick is down.
2. After someone celebrates his or her 100th birthday-the next piece of news about that person ain’t gonna be good.
3. People worry about things happening and most of those things never even happen.

Anyway…

Jeff Eats’ buddies at Burger Beast (www.burgerbeast.com) already-got to Knucklehead Burgers and gave the 40 seater a rave review. Based on Burger Beast’s review, Knucklehead’s cool name/decor (www.knuckleheadsburgers.com) and a 20 minute phone conversation with Adam Knucklehead’s operations manager—Jeff Eats is gonna go out on a limb here and…green-light this joint for you.

Now-only certain things in this life are for certain…but Jeff Eats is feeling real good about Knucklehead. Now of course if Burger Beast’s stellar track record proves not to have been as stellar/certain) as I thought it was, Jeff Eats will have to further scrutinize Burger Beast’s picks a whole lot closer in the future.

I’ve got Knucklehead Burgers on my “to try” list.

If you get there before I do, let me know if my “gut” call on this joint was right or wrong.

Your input will certainly be appreciated..

The City of Boca Raton’s Summer Series: 2015 Tribute Bands- serves up Ruffhouse-a tribute to Bpb Marley this coming Friday Night- 7/31/15 at 7:30pm…

Jeff Eats has gotta compliment The City of Boca Raton… thus far well organized/produced shows (been to the last 3). Trust me, I know that the shows are “free” but it’s no easy task “pleasing” the crowds that have already ranged from 2,000-4,000. One thought- just between you guys and Jeff Eats- Neil Zirconia who recently did a real-good Neil Diamond tribute- looked “miniscule” up on the Mizner stage-with a 1-man track-show…I’ve seen Zirconia with a 5 piece backup band- that’s the way The City of Boca Raton should have contracted for him to appear! Trust Jeff Eats, much more realistic looking/sounding/professional show!

Anyway,

Jeff Eats has seen Miami based, Ruffhouse- and if this kinda music is your bag, you will absolutely love the band!

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats are gonna be there, with an early dinner before the show at:

***** Dubliner Irish Pub, 435 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, Florida 33432 (561) 620-2540.

Personally, I wouldn’t give you 5 cents for most of the Irish “pubs” in South Florida…darkly lit-dark wood-beer joints, with mediocre food, at best.

Dubliner Irish Pub located in Boca Raton’s Mizner Park…is the exception to the rule. For sure, it has the dark wood interior–and dark lighting… but its food is terrific. A recent outing had me “sampling” prime rib sliders, hamburger, shepherd’s pie, french fries and macaroni & cheese…all absolutely delicious. Throw in top-notch djs and bands (Thursday-Saturday) covering the 1960’s-2009, reasonable prices/pleasant waitstaff and an out- door dining patio for “people watching” the Mizner Park crowd…and you got a real good joint.

Dubliner’s menu has all of the “Irish” standards…plus loads of appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches and meat/chicken/seafood entrees. It’s got a real nice beer selection and hard stuff.

Dubliner Irish Pub is open 7 days a week 4pm-2am.

***** Jordan’s Steak Bistro, 10140 West Forest Hill Boulevard, Wellington, Florida 33414, (561) 793-9394.

First told you guys about Jordan’s Steak Bistro way-back on 9/11/13.

Over the past 2-years, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have eaten at Jordan’s a number of times and- absolutely love the joint!

Trust Jeff Eats on this one, Jordan’s Steak Bistro is as good-if not better than most of South Florida’s highfalutin-steak joints and it’s “cheaper”- (I think that I am suppose to say-less expensive)!

Anyway,

Reprinted down below is Jeff Eats’ 9/11/13 “story”- and a “deal” that I just got from localflavor.com which makes Jordan’s Steak Bistro even “cheaper” to eat at- or shall I say, less expensive than it normally would be.

Jeff Eats highly recommends that you guys try Jordan’s Steak Bistro and take advantage of localflavor.com’s “deal” (like I did, about 17 minutes ago)!

***** Jordan’s Steak Bistro, 10140 West Forest Hill Boulevard, Wellington, Florida 33414, (561) 793-9394.

Got a really good “American Style” joint for you…Jordan’s Steak Bistro in Wellington.

I appreciate—that the word STEAK is featured in the restaurant’s name…but Jordan’s really isn’t a steak-house….

The joint’s got a full bar with tvs and a casual décor. When you check Jordan’s website- www.jordanssteakbristro.com for menu/prices, you’ll find a couple of photos, so you’ll know what the restaurant looks like.

Jordan’s menu covers grilled cheese sandwiches to bone- in ribeyes…so don’t worry, everybody is gonna find what to eat.

A recent outing entailed, fried calamari-margherita flatbread-grilled Caesar salad-cheeseburger-18oz bone-in ribeye…and I must-say, everything was delicious. I especially enjoyed the ribeye-ranking it up there with the stuff you catch in the best South Florida steakhouses. On the price front, let’s say “reasonable” and service was as pleasant as can be.

Just so we are on the same page here, that ribeye ran 39 bucks and the steak fries side was another 5 …so– we ain’t exactly talking neighborhood “sports bar” prices—but all in all, the bet here is, that you won’t have to rush out to some ATM when you see the bill…then again, maybe you will have to, but I don’t know, because Jeff Eats hasn’t looked in your wallet-lately!

Let me wrap this one up for you this way…

Jeff Eats really enjoyed Jordan’s…

Jordan’s Steak Bistro is open Monday-Thursday 4pm-10pm, Friday-Saturday 4pm-11pm, Sunday 4pm-9pm.
