* The Shindigs Surf Party- A Tribute To The Beach Boys.

A recent e-mail received by Jeff Eats…

Hey Jeff,

Maybe you could help me out here.

My husband and I are planning a Summer party at our home here in Delray Beach. It’s going to be an outside BBQ around our pool and we will have close to 80 people. We were hoping that you could recommend a local Beach Boys band for the party.

Thanks in advance,

Roberta K

Roberta K:

***** The Shindigs *****

This past Friday Night (November 28, 2008) I attended a private party at the Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton. The evening’s entertainment featured a 4-piece South Florida based 1950’s-60’s-70’s tribute band…The Shindigs.

I have to tell you, that The Shindigs had a crowd of 250 up and dancing all night. The band did absolutely amazing covers of the hits of such groups/acts as (now get ready for this partial list in no particular order)…The Beatles, The Dave Clark Five, The Zombies, The Monkees, The Grass Roots, The Bee Gees, K.C & The Sunshine Band, The Commodores, The Rascals, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, The Byrds, The Temptations, Barry White, Chubby Checker, James Brown, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Dion & The Belmonts, Roy Orbison, The Beach Boys, Chicago, Gerry & The Pacemakers and Bill Haley & His Comets.

Take a look at The Shindigs’ website www.theshindigs.us. If you check the members’ bios…you will find that these guys aren’t “kids” playing rock’n’ roll, but rather… are seasoned-professional musicians with extensive music industry backgrounds. If you check “Events” you will find that in the upcoming months, The Shindigs have South Florida “free” gigs scheduled at such venues as the Hollywood Band Stand (12/3/08) and the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (12/26/08)…

I am telling you, that if you like great classic rock ‘n roll/disco music from the 50’s-60’s-70’s, you will absolutely love The Shindigs. By the way, The Shindigs also perform a Beatles’ tribute show–costumes and all…under the name The Beatles Remembered. If you check You Tube, you will find a number of videos starring The Beatles Remembered and the performances are amazingly accurate…

The Shindigs are a band/act that you should make it your business to see. By the way, unlike many bands…The Shindigs’ music is 100% live, no tracks or tapes are used to enhance the band’s performance.

Don’t miss these guys!!

Gin Blossoms with Special Guests: Tonic & Dishwalla (Pompano Beach Amphitheater- Pompano Beach)

* Gin Blossoms with Special Guests: Tonic & Dishwalla.

Three of the 90’s most popular Rock n Roll bands – are set to play the Pompano Beach Amphitheater on Sunday, May 15th. Jeff Eats just checked the box office and goldstar.com (discount tickets) and there are a handful of tickets left for this concert. So if you wanna go and don’t already have tickets, time to make your move!

The Skinny:

Gin Blossoms with Special Guests: Tonic & Dishwalla

Sunday, May 15
Concert: 7:00pm | Doors: 6:00pm
The Amp (Pompano Beach Amphitheater)
Tickets: $40-$60. theamppompano.org goldstar.com (discount tickets)

Taking their name from a caption on a W.C. Fields photo, Gin Blossoms signed a record deal with A&M and recorded their first EP “Up And Crumbling” in 1991. But, it was not until their breakout record “New Miserable Experience” in 1992 that their rise to fame began. “New Miserable Experience” kept the band on the charts for almost 3 years with singles “Hey Jealousy,” “Allison Road,” “Until I Fall Away,” “Mrs Rita,” and “Found Out About You.” The album took the airwaves by siege and held MTV hostage with multi cross-over hits in 4 different radio formats. It was this record that rocketed the band into the mainstream going on to sell over 4 million copies making the band a 90’s radio mainstay

Special Guests: Tonic & Dishwalla will open the show in Pompano.

With six top 10 singles, over 4 million records sold, multiple Grammy nominations, platinum albums, hit songs around the world including the #1 most-played rock song of 1998, it is safe to say that Tonic is a musical powerhouse. Merging the raw honesty of rock with their unabashed melodies Tonic have helped usher rock n roll into the new millennium.

Dishwalla’s debut album, Pet Your Friends, lit up the airwaves in 1996 with their edgy smash-hit singleCounting Blue Cars. With a gritty attitude and edgy musicianship reminiscent of past musical legends, Dishwalla’s Alt-Rock sound was enough for music fans to crown Counting Blue Cars one of the most requested songs of that year. The track earned them a Billboard Award for “Best Rock Song” for 1996 as well as two ASCAP Awards for “Rock Track of the Year” in both 1996 and 1997, driving Pet Your Friends to sell more than a million copies worldwide.

The Nazi Titanic

The book just came out!

Jeff Eats read it…

You guys gotta get a copy- it’s a great read!

from Amazon.com

Built in 1927, the German ocean liner SS Cap Arcona was the greatest ship since the RMS Titanic and one of the most celebrated luxury liners in the world. When the Nazis seized control in Germany, she was stripped down for use as a floating barracks and troop transport. Later, during the war, Hitler’s minister, Joseph Goebbels, cast her as the “star” in his epic propaganda film about the sinking of the legendary Titanic.

Following the film’s enormous failure, the German navy used the Cap Arcona to transport German soldiers and civilians across the Baltic, away from the Red Army’s advance. In the Third Reich’s final days, the ill-fated ship was packed with thousands of concentration camp prisoners. Without adequate water, food, or sanitary facilities, the prisoners suffered as they waited for the end of the war. Just days before Germany surrendered, the Cap Arcona was mistakenly bombed by the British Royal Air Force, and nearly all of the prisoners were killed in the last major tragedy of the Holocaust and one of history’s worst maritime disasters.

Although the British government sealed many documents pertaining to the ship’s sinking, Robert P. Watson has unearthed forgotten records, conducted many interviews, and used over 100 sources, including diaries and oral histories, to expose this story. As a result, The Nazi Titanic is a riveting and astonishing account of an enigmatic ship that played a devastating role in World War II and the Holocaust.

Do Yourself A Big Favor-Eat Watermelon!

* Do Yourself A Big Favor- Eat Watermelon!

Long story short, Jeff Eats wants you guys to eat watermelon!

Back in 1963 at Junior High School 62 in Brooklyn, New York- my Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Ethel Wenger told me that I had a bad habit of repeating myself…

Anyway, printed down below are two previous “stories” that Jeff Eats has done on why you should – Do Yourself A Big Favor- Eat Watermelon!

As for Mrs. Wenger who I’m sure is long gone (she’d be something like a 104)- right you are/were!

***** Eat Watermelon!

Way-back on September 5, 2014 Jeff Eats did a story “Watermelon!” It’s reprinted down below.

The reason why I am mentioning WATERMELON is that I really-believe that eating this fruit helps-makes-keeps you healthy!

Look!

I maybe nuts, but- it’s now Watermelon Season and if I’m wrong, so what!

Watermelon tastes great and it’s dirt cheap to buy!

* Watermelon!

I don’t know about you guys, but when Labor Day hits, that means-end of Summer to Jeff Eats.

Taking that formula one-step further, Labor Day/End of Summer/next step- goodbye watermelon until next Summer.

Anyway,

As I’m sure you know, last Monday- Labor Day 2014 hit…and it got me to thinking about watermelon. Now no bs-ing here, on any given day Jeff Eats can eat 1/2 of a large watermelon-no problem at all. For the record, watermelon is one of my favorite fruits and I recall years ago hearing that it was a very “healthy” fruit.

With the above in mind, take a look at this Watermelon “story” I just read on howstuffworks.com…

For what it’s worth, I think this watermelon “info” is something to definitely have on file in the back of your head. As the late great- Sy Syms use to say, “An educated consumer is our best customer.”

Finally, maybe one of you scientists out there can explain this- How do you grow seedless watermelons from seedless watermelons?
*****

Some foods are fun to eat, and watermelon is definitely one of them. That triangular wedge of bright red/white/green, sweet juiciness forbids us to take life too seriously and shouts, “SUMMER!!!” As if that weren’t enough, watermelon is packed full of nutrition, hydrates and is low-fat. While many of us think of watermelon as a great snack option, when you tally up its nutritive value, you might consider making this all-star a feature player in your cuisine.

Watermelons are an excellent source of several vitamins: vitamin A, which helps maintain eye health and is an antioxidant; vitamin C, which helps strengthen immunity, heal wounds, prevent cell damage, promote healthy teeth and gums; and vitamin B6, which helps brain function and helps convert protein to energy.

Tomatoes have been highly touted as a great source for lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that helps fight heart disease and several types of cancer — prostate cancer in particular. Watermelon, however, has the highest concentrations of lycopene of any fresh fruit or vegetable.

If your little ones don’t dig into their swiss chard, lima beans or spinach — all great sources of potassium — consider offering them a serving of watermelon instead. It is a great source of potassium, which helps muscle and nerve function, helps maintain the body’s proper electrolyte and acid-base balance, and helps lower the risk of high blood pressure.

Watermelon also contains the amino acids citrulline and arginine, which can help maintain arteries, blood flow and overall cardiovascular function.

Alone or in a fruit salad are the most common ways many of us eat watermelon. While eating the meat of the fruit is the best way to take advantage of all of its nutrients, this is one of my favorite bits of summer refreshment. I get a version of this from my local burrito truck. The key to making this great: don’t oversweeten it. With just a touch of sweetness, it’s heavenly.

*****. Ginther’s Swirls Ice Cream, 11036 International Drive, Rolando, Florida 32821, (407) 477-1212.

Got an absolutely terrific soft serve ice cream joint (order/pickup at counter, drive-thru, indoor/outdoor patio seating) for you guys- Ginther’s Swirls Ice Cream in Orlando.

A recent Orlando “trip” netted Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats…

image

image

Just so you know, Ginther’s Swirls Ice Cream is owned/operated by the same guys who own 2- Twistee Treat soft serve ice cream joints also in Orlando. Jeff Eats isn’t exactly sure how this all plays- but Ginther’s Swirls Ice Cream’s products are identical to those served-up by Twistee Treat…Jeff Eats is kinda thinking that franchise-related “issues” are responsible for the Ginther’s Swirls Ice Cream name! In any event, like I said 2-seconds ago, Ginther’s is an absolutely terrific soft serve ice cream joint!

Printed down below is Jeff Eats’ March 4, 2014 Twistee Treat tale- other than Ginther’s physical layout- and business hours you can apply Jeff Eats’ thoughts on Twistee Treat to Ginther’s!

Long story short, Ginther’s Swirls Ice Cream makes dynamite stuff and is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-10:30pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm.

***** Twistee Treat, 11933 East Colonial Drive, Orlando, Florida 32826, (407) 309-3878.

Twistee Treat…fast food/soft serve ice cream. Small Florida chain -8 “cone” locations-I’ll explain later!

Recently “tried” the Twistee Treat joint–located two minutes from UCF in Orlando.

Do you know what a pig in sh@t is? Well, Jeff Eats was one–while devouring the vanilla/chocolate/strawberry soft serve–and the amazing chocolate, cherry and butterscotch dips that covered the ice cream.

No ifs or buts…Twistee Treat’s stuff is major-league…and is as good if not better, than guys like Carvel and Dairy Queen. Look! This soft serve “review” business is real subjective–so let’s just say that, if you like/love soft serve ice cream–this joint is a homerun.

While I’m on the subject of “subjective” reviews–comparing Carvel-Dairy Queen-Twistee Treat is like comparing–three colorless diamonds-with one being 0, another being 0.5 and the third 1.0. First of all, Jeff Eats has absolutely no idea as to what he’s talking about diamond-wise—but you do get the point!-the differences are infinitesimal and Carvel/Dairy Queen/Twistee Treat all-get the job done. One final thing–in 1958 Jeff Eats lost P.S. 179’s “Spelling Bee” to Melody Cohen when he failed to correctly spell the word- I N F I N I T E S I M A L and she did.

Twistee Treat’s “gimmick”–its free standing stores are “shapped” like- ice cream cones/topped with soft serve. Order at window/outdoor table seating.

You can check complete menu/prices/locations/photos at…Twistee Treat’s website www.twisteetreat.com.

Twistee Treat is open Sunday-Thursady 11:30am-midnight, Fruday-Saturday 11:30am-1am.

Printed below is “History” taken from Twistee’s site.

“What’s the attraction? It’s what’s in the Cone!
The Twistee Treat cone shaped building and ice cream have been around since 1983. The 20’ high and 20’ wide fiberglass cone buildings have housed America’s favorite Twistee Treat ice cream. Twistee Treat’s long history of serving up the best ice cream experience is legendary! The Twistee Treat cone buildings will soon dot America’s landscape again, reminding us of how great ice cream can be. Twistee Treat ice cream makes you smile. Our philosophy is old fashioned – turn every guest into a fan. Over the years there have been millions!
Twistee Treat ice cream is real homemade ice cream. Its rich smooth flavors take you back to a simpler time. The menu indulges in ice cream, cones, cups and shakes. The banana splits are the best in the land. Twistee Treat also offers Malts, Shakes, Sundaes, and Slushes!

Liverpool Live is the No. 1 working Beatles tribute band in the state of Florida. They perform note-for-note copies of the Beatles’ best music — from The White Album to Abbey Road — with period-authentic equipment, costumes and amps, just like the ones used by the Fab Four. Liverpool Live is an immersive Beatles experience brought to you by talented musicians, several of whom were past cast members of Disney Orlando. This group has played it all from corporate shows to sold out theaters. See them when they bring the Beatles to the Boca Back Box.

Today (Wednesday, December 27, 2006) is your lucky day. Earlier today, I told you guys about Captain Charlie’s Reef Grill as being one of the best places for seafood in Juno Beach, not to mention all of South Florida. Now I am going to “give” you Juno Beach Cafe, which is one of the best breakfast-lunch joints in Juno Beach. Just think, you now have all 3-daily meals “covered” courtesy of www.JeffEats.com.

Juno Beach Cafe is a small hole-in-the wall joint. Tee-shirts/shorts are the dress-code of the day. There is seating inside and on an out-door patio. Suffice it to say, that this joint makes “great breakfasts.” You name it, Juno Beach Cafe has it. This joint does breakfast-so-well, that on Sunday from 7am-2pm, breakfast is all that the joint serves. Juno’s menu also has an assortment of salads, burgers, wraps, sandwiches etc., This joint’s food is terrific.

Juno Beach Cafe is open 7 days a week, Monday-Friday 7am-3pm, Saturday-Sunday 7am-2pm.

Just wondering, if this guy Bill Philipps is supposedly as-good at what he says he does, how come he didn’t know from the beginning that his $40 tickets would be fetching 20 bucks on goldstar.com more than 2-months before the event’s date?

Did you ever notice that Gypsy Fortune Tellers always seem to live in the back-room of the stores where they have their reading-parlors? As they say in the legal business, I rest my case!
