***** Bagel Works Restaurant & Deli.

Recent e-mail from reader Marlene J.
Jeff,
Not to put you on the spot, but what’s the best bagel joint in Boca?
I’ve eaten in loads of them and just curious where your head is on this one.
Thanks

Marlene J:

If we are talking the sum of all-of-the parts-you may want to checkout Bagel Works.

Posted below is Jeff Eats’ 12/11/06 “review”…by the way, the joint “now” has bacon.

Just between you and me, there are some Boca Raton joints-with better pumpernickel bagels, better everything bagels, better bialys, better egg salad, so on and so forth…but, if we are talking “over-all” bagel joints, Bagel Works is right up there with the best of breed. For what it’s worth, over the years-Jeff Eats has eaten at/taken out from Bagel Works numerous times and I can’t remember a single bad outing. One other thing, for what it’s worth- I’ve never heard anything but rave reviews about Bagel Works’ tuna fish salad.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for reading…

If you want bacon with your eggs, or bacon with your cheeseburger, or a BLT, then you “can’t” eat at Bagel Works. Bagel Works is a bagel-joint. Bagel Works is not a kosher-bagel-joint. I will leave it to you, to ask the owner or the “powers that be” when you are there, as to why: Bacon is not served? By the way, I know Bagel Work’s reason, but I ain’t telling.

Bagel Works has been serving some of the best New York Styled Deli “stuff” in South Florida for over 15 years. This joint is open 7 days a week for breakfast & lunch, 6:30am-4pm. Bagel Works’ eat-at-counter and tables are always jammed and its take-out /appetizing counter always has a line.

Try this joint, it is a winner. By the way, don’t forget to ask about the “bacon.”

Stella’s is a real hole in the wall, maybe we’re talking 6 tables! Formerly known as Perrini’s Pizzeria & Ristorante- Stella’s (same owners) has been pumping out top-shelf pizzas, real good subs and “other” delicious red sauce Italian stuff for over 30 years. Trust Jeff Eats on this one- Stella’s Pizzeria is a winner!

***** Perrini’s Pizzeria & Ristorante, 19585-M State Road 7, Boca Raton, Florida 33498 (561) 488-4371.

Perrini’s which seats 28, is a red sauce-hole in the wall-Southern Italian joint…it has been in the same spot for something like 22 years. I have eaten in Perrini’s exactly twice…the first time, something like 10 years ago and the second being this evening. There is an old saying “out of sight out of mind”…well, Perrini’s is located in a strip-shopping-center which I hardly visit. Anyway…10 years ago, I loved its pizza…

Tonight, I sampled Perrini’s veal parmigiana, chicken marsala, shrimp scampi and pizza…and I have to tell you, that the pizza was absolutely terrific…actually it was one of the best slices that I have had down here in South Florida. The other stuff was very good, but the pizza is in a league of its own.

Like I said before, Perrini’s is a hole-in-the-wall…From any seat in the house, you can see the pizza ovens, kitchen and the entire “take-out department.” This is strictly a “mom & pop” affair, so don’t expect anything special decor-wise. You know the drill here, soup or salad/entree/side of pasta/garlic rolls…the veal parmigiana and chicken marsala go for $15.49…the shrimp scampi is a buck more at $16.49…a large pizza goes for $13.49. Perrini’s menu also has daily “specials” like a large pizza and one dozen chicken wings for $17.99.

I am telling you, that the pizza alone makes Perrini’s a home-run joint in my mind. If you live in the Boca Raton area, Perrini’s is a real good place to know about.

Perrini’s is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-11pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-midnight.

***** Sicilian Oven, 21170 Saint Andrews Avenue, Boca Raton, Florida 33433, (561) 750-9772.

Here’s another one of those “out of sight out of mind” joints for you… wood fired pizza-Sicilian Oven.

Printed down below is a- Jeff Eats’ review from March 14, 2009. When you read that write-up, you’ll notice that the joint being “discussed” was the first- Sicilian Oven that had “just” opened in Lighthouse Point…since that review appeared, Sicilian Oven has also- opened joints in Aventura, Coral Springs and most recently Boca Raton.

Long story short, last night Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and two other couples ate dinner at the Boca Raton restaurant. Stuff ordered- Sicilian salad (large $11), wood oven roasted chicken wings (large $17), large- Nona’s Square Pizza ($22-thick crust/mozzarella/pomodoro sauce), large- The Bianco Pizza ($17-parmesan/romano/ricotta/mozzarella- and I gotta tell you, everything was A-OK! Now you know and I know that “pecking orders and nitpicking” aren’t really my game-but I must tell you that the Sicilian salad (romaine lettuce/roasted peppers/walnuts/olives/vine ripen tomatoes/red onions/garbanzo beans/celery/shaved parmesan cheese/creamy house dressing) was one of the most delicious salads that I’ve had in a very long time…while I’m doing this, I liked The Bianco Pizza better than the Nona’s Square Pizza and the chicken wings were good but could have used more seasoning/and the bread that came with them-I’ve had much better. Not that it really matters, because I’m Jeff Eats and they’re-not- but the other 5 in my party all agreed on the salad, the pizza “rank” and the little tweaks needed by the chicken and bread!

As you can well imagine (then again, maybe you can’t) Jeff Eats- eats-out/takes-out quite a bit…every so often a joint just falls through the cracks. Let’s just say that Sicilian Oven was one of those casualties-and trust me, my loss! Its food is very good and “all in” the bill was a super reasonable 80 bucks.

You can check menu/prices/locations/info at sicilianoven.com.

***** Sicilian Oven, 2486 North Federal Highway, Lighthouse Point, Florida 33064.

Got an absolutely terrific “wood fired Italian” joint for you…Sicilian Oven, located in Lighthouse Point.

Gave this joint a shot last night and got-to tell you, that the food is dynamite. The menu is packed with appetizers, salads, pastas, ciabattas, wings and pizzas. My “taste test” (somebody has to do it)… sicilian salad ( a combination of mixed greens, roasted peppers, roman tomatoes, red onions, garbanzo beans & something like 5 other ingredients), wood oven roasted chicken wings, wood fired pizza, “no pasta” lasagna (eggplant & vegetables), meatballs and fried calamari…everything was delicious.

Sicilian Oven is owned by two guys, Andrew and Ralph. From what I can tell, Andrew “handles” the action in the open-kitchen and Ralph “handles” the dining area. Although the joint was packed, these boys were efficiently cranking-out some heavy duty orders. Sicilian Oven is a real modern looking joint, with just enough flat-screen tv sets to make it interesting for sports-afficianados. The prices are neighborhood “pizza joint” prices. Service is excellent & your tee shirt/shorts’ ensemble will work here.

Just so you know, although Sicilian Oven has only been open for something like 4-months, it already has a loyal-following… Giving credit where credit is do, Sun Sentinel food critic Judith Stocks gave the joint **** (four stars: excellent) on March 13, 2009…so, old Jeff Eats can’t claim to be the “discoverer” of this one…as a matter of fact, it was Stocks’ review that alerted me to this joint.

Give Sicilian Oven a try, it really is that good. For menu/prices, check its website www.thesicilianoven.com.

Sicilian Oven is open Monday-Saturday 11:30am-10pm and Sunday 4pm-10pm.

The $25 Gift Card is good at-any Tropical Smoothie Cafe. Check tropicalsmoothiecafe.com for locations, menu, prices, info.

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, despite the fact that this national order-pickup at the counter 500+ unit “smoothie” chain has a “ton” of Florida locations which feature a menu that Jeff Eats and most-definitely Mrs. Jeff Eats can handle (menu: includes smoothies, sandwiches, flat breads, wraps, salads, bowls, breakfast wraps, and breakfast flat breads, superfood smoothies, classic smoothies, indulgent smoothies, and supercharged smoothies along with supplements that may be added to each smoothie)- Jeff Eats has never been to one!

Anyway…

Long story short, the other day Tropical Smoothie Cafe’s pr-people sent Jeff Eats 2-$25 Gift Cards…one for me to use and one for one of you guys to use!

Printed down below is probably “way-too-much” Wikipedia “info” on Tropical Smoothie Cafe…

Tropical Smoothie Cafe

The current logo for “Tropical Smoothie Cafe”
Tropical Smoothie Cafe, sometimes referred to as simply Tropical Smoothie, is a restaurant franchise in the United States. In addition to smoothies the company is a full Cafe that offers sandwiches, wraps, salads, flat breads, and introduced bowls to their food line in 2016.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe currently operates more than 500 locations nationwide.

Tropical Smoothie began as a smoothie shop in 1993. Tropical Smoothie Franchise Development Corporation was founded in 1997 in Destin, Florida. The first franchised store opened in 1997 in Tallahassee, Florida.

In 1999, they created a niche in the smoothie category by introducing a line of food items such as sandwiches and wraps. As more locations opened, the individual Cafes went through some changes. They redesigned their store’s decor to offer a tropical theme with bamboo walls, palm trees, bright colors, and original Bob Stedman artwork creations.

The franchise celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007 and was opening a new store at a pace of every 6–7 days at the time. In 2006, Tropical Smoothie Cafe opened their 200th store in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and in 2011 they opened their 300th store in Fort Myers, Florida.[1]

Founders and original owners Eric and Delora Jenrich and David Walker came from franchise backgrounds and used that knowledge to grow Tropical Smoothie Cafe. As they grew they recruited others from the food industry, including the hiring of their current chief executive officer Mike Rotondo who had previous experience at companies such as Great Wraps, Arby’s and HoneyBaked Ham.

In 2012, private equity firm BIP Opportunities Fund bought a controlling interest in Tropical Smoothie Café. Founders Eric Jenrich and David Walker, the former owners of Tropical Smoothie Café, remain on the board of directors, and former chief operating officer Mike Rotondo was promoted to replace Jenrich as chief executive officer. BIP partner Scott Pressly, who was a financial and strategic advisor to the chain since 2009, is now the company’s chairman.

The company posted over 100 million dollars in sales during 2008.

The lead singer of Panic! At the Disco, Brendon Urie, worked in a location, at one time.[2]

Menu

Tropical Smoothie Cafe’s menu includes smoothies, sandwiches, flat breads, wraps, salads, bowls, breakfast wraps, and breakfast flat breads. They offer superfood smoothies, classic smoothies, indulgent smoothies, and supercharged smoothies along with supplements that may be added to each smoothie.[3]

Tropical Smoothie Cafe also rolls out Limited Time Offerings 4–5 times per year. Previous LTOs include a spinach wrap and salad, a watermelon flavored smoothie, a spicy Thai chicken wrap, a sweet chili chicken flatbread, and more. In March 2016, Tropical Smoothie Cafe unveiled their newest menu item—Cali Chicken Club Flatbread.[4]

Tropical Smoothie Cafes sales are made up of 50 percent smoothie sales and 50 percent food sales.[5]

“Beyond Meat”

In May 2013, Tropical Smoothie Cafe began offering a vegan, non-gmo meat substitute called Beyond Meat.[6] Beyond Meat is made of a blend of soy and pea protein, flours, and fiber. In July 2013, Tropical Smoothie Cafe announced that Beyond Meat would become a permanent fixture on the menu.[7]

Charitable service

To celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2007, Tropical Smoothie Cafe created a holiday called National Flip Flop Day.[8] Every year, on the third Friday in June, Tropical Smoothie Café celebrates National Flip Flop Day. Customers who come into a participating Cafe across the nation from 2 pm to 7 pm while wearing flip flops will receive a free 24oz. Jetty Punch Smoothie. Tropical Smoothie gives proceeds of a $1 paper flip flop from customers to send ill children and their families to Camp Sunshine. Camp Sunshine is a retreat based in Casco, Maine, whose mission is focused solely on addressing the effects of a life-threatening illness on every member of the immediate family—the ill child, the parents, and the siblings. The year-round program is free of charge to families.[9]

In 2012, Tropical Smoothie Cafe raised more than $365,000 for Camp Sunshine, which brought the total amount raised since 2007 to more than $1.5 million. Money raised from Tropical Smoothie Cafe in 2012 will send 150 children and their families from across the country to camp for a week of games and activities. At their current fundraising rate of up to $400,000 per year, Tropical Smoothie Café is expected to raise more than $2 million for Camp Sunshine during the next five years. Of this $2 million, the company has pledged $1 million toward endowing a full weeklong session at Camp Sunshine every year—Tropical Smoothie Café Week.[10]
