Come to Festival Marketplace and have a nice lunch and paint a different themed painting every month! This event is held just west of the food court and your $12.00 includes lunch, your painting and instruction from a painting expert! Each month there will be a new picture to paint, NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Our instructor will be with us every step of the way, so even if you think you can’t paint, try it and see the results of a beautiful painting YOU will paint on your own! (this is similar to painting parties that cost 2 to 3 times more than this one and they don’t include lunch). This has limited spots available, so reserve your spot now! Now just between you guys and Jeff Eats, although billed as a “fish” joint, Charlie’s Fish Fry also serves up a bunch of “non-fish” stuff, so you guys with allergies or whatever-will definitely find what to eat!

The Fresh Market…think Whole Foods Market (www.wholefoodsmarket.com—overpriced national “specialty” supermarket) and you got the whole (pun intended) concept in a nutshell. The Fresh Market is a publiclly traded company and as of June 2, 2011 had 101 stores in 20-states. You can check www.thefreshmarket.com for store locations/and other stuff.

Last week I stopped in the newest- The Fresh Market which had “just” opened on State Road 7 in Boca Raton. The space was previously occupied by an Albertson’s store. Like I said before, squint your eyes/and you’ll think that your in a Whole Foods. For those of you who don’t know what a Whole Foods is—specialty grocery retailer. Anyway…I absolutely love fresh orange, grapefruit, tangerine juice. To make a long story short, went to the the juice “area” and found fresh orange and fresh grapefruit. There were 2-brands Kennesaw and a Signature Collection. There was also a sign that in essence said that that Signature Collection was made by Kennesaw especially for The Fresh Market. Being a “good” shopper, I checked the “SELL BY DATE” on the product and low-and-behold I found a number of both the orange-grapefruit (Kennesaw-Signature Collection) quarts to have dates that had already-come-and gone. NOT GOOD!

Imagine—A specialty food market selling “expired” products?…or for that matter, any supermarket selling dated-expired stuff.

Sorry, I can’t comment on the fruits, vegetables, baked goods, prepared foods, candies…didn’t try them. I came for juice and found a store that couldn’t even handle the simpliest of tasks-having fresh products.

It just dawned on me, that although I have referenced Whole Foods Market in several “joint” writeups, I’ve never done a writeup on Whole Foods Market. Play along with me, because I seriously doubt that any of you guys don’t know what Whole Foods Market is all about…

The best way that “I” can describe Whole Foods Market is- a national chain of specialty supermarkets…that does an absolutely incredible job-of-marketing its products. The reason I make the “marketing” comment, because give or take a handful of items, Whole Foods’ prices are ridiculously HIGH…for example, a quart of fresh squeezed tangerine juice at Whole Foods $3.99, while a similar quart at The Boy Farmers Market in Delray Beach goes for $2.49. The folks behind Whole Foods Market are real smart—they successfully carved out a niche in the organic food/product business—and you do know, don’t you, that many Americans are really into this holistic/organic/healthy/climate control lifestyle. Personally, I still believe that hiding under my desk at PS 179 in Brooklyn/1955 was enough protection from a Russian nuclear attack.

Just so we are straight, every so often I buy stuff at Whole Foods Market. The primary reason, my local Publix doesn’t carry the item…that fresh tangerine juice is an example.

Let me leave you with this thought. When I was a kid, my parents would let me and my brother “look” at the toys at FAO Schwarz in Manhattan…they- then bought us “our” toys at Toy R Us or a local store in Brooklyn for much less. For sure, every so often FAO Schwarz had a unique toy here and there, but then again my parents weren’t buying me a $1,000 battery powered car to drive on the sidewalks of East Flatbush—for some perspective here, in 1955 (just to pick a year!) pizza was $.15 a slice, a gallon of gas ran $.26, a small Coke went for a nickel and a haircut was 50 cents

The 2nd Annual Italian Fest in Downtown Boca Raton will take place on Saturday February 25th at the beautiful Sanborn Square Park located at 72 N. Federal Highway beginning at 4pm . Italian Fest will feature an amazing array of authentic Italian food and wines, entertainment and kids activities.
