McDonald’s Fires CEO Steve Easterbrook Over Relationship With Employee
Head of U.S. business is named chief executive as burger giant fights weak domestic sales

Steve Easterbrook had been chief executive since 2015.
By Heather Haddon
Updated Nov. 3, 2019 6:41 pm ET
McDonald’s Corp. said it had fired Chief Executive Steve Easterbrook because of his consensual relationship with an employee, the latest challenge for the company as it races to keep up with changes reverberating throughout the food industry.

The burger giant said Sunday that its board voted Friday to terminate Mr. Easterbrook after investigating his relationship with the unnamed employee. Mr. Easterbrook resigned from McDonald’s board as well. He said in an email to McDonald’s employees on Sunday that he had violated company policy on personal conduct.

“This was a mistake,” Mr. Easterbrook said in the email. “Given the values of the company, I agree with the board that it is time for me to move on.” Mr. Easterbrook said he is grateful for his time at the company and has declined to comment further, according to a representative.

The company wouldn’t provide more details on the relationship.

McDonald’s said Mr. Easterbrook would be replaced immediately by USA President Chris Kempczinski, 51.

Mr. Easterbrook, 52 years old, has been chief executive since March 2015. During his tenure, the company’s shares nearly doubled in value but traffic to U.S. restaurants continues to stagnate. McDonald’s is reckoning with challenges reverberating throughout the food industry from meat producers to supermarkets as consumers switch to products that they see as more healthful and big companies sacrifice profit for technological upgrades and delivery.

McDonald’s has invested in updating its sandwiches and renovating its restaurants to keep up with those changes, but paid a price in profits. And U.S. franchisees have balked at mandated investments in digital-ordering kiosks and new menu items like fresh-beef burgers. Franchisees started an independent association last year to push back against some of Mr. Easterbrook’s changes.

Chris Kempczinski, the new CEO of McDonald’s PHOTO: GABE PALACIO FOR THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
Mr. Easterbrook said earlier this year that he and other top executives, including Mr. Kempczinski, had been talking to franchisees in light of their concerns, and had pushed back the timeline for owners making some capital investments as a result.

“Wouldn’t life be great if everyone was happy? Of course,” Mr. Easterbrook told investors. “Am I fundamentally concerned that it will derail us from the shared vision that we have? No, not at all.”

Mr. Easterbrook also rolled back offerings including premium burgers and parts of an all-day breakfast menu after they slowed down restaurant operations. Wait-times at McDonald’s drive-throughs have climbed in recent years as the company’s menu became increasingly complex.

Mr. Kempczinski, who helped implement many of the recent changes as head of U.S. operations, said he will maintain Mr. Easterbrook’s focus on technology as CEO and believes the company’s investments will pay off.

“There isn’t going to be some radical, strategic shift. The plan is working,” Mr. Kempczinski said in an interview on Sunday.

Mr. Kempczinski said investors should feel confident in the succession and that he intends to listen to consumers. He also said he looked forward to continuing to discuss concerns with franchisees. “It’s something we need to solve together,” said Mr. Kempczinski, who will also join McDonald’s board.

McDonald’s said Joe Erlinger, most recently president of international operated markets, is succeeding Mr. Kempczinski to oversee McDonald’s roughly 14,000 domestic restaurants.

McDonald’s shares, up 9% this year, have trailed the broader S&P index tracking restaurants in that period, including other fast-food peers such as Wendy’s Co. and Restaurant Brands International Inc.

McDonald’s faces more challenges at the U.S. restaurants that drives its sales. Labor organizers and some lawmakers have called on the company to address workplace harassment issues and raise its minimum wage to $15 an hour.

McDonald’s this year strengthened workplace training and protocol for reporting potential employee misconduct. Mr. Kempczinski said the company had a responsibility to address workplace well-being. The company said this year that it would stop lobbying against federal minimum wage increases, and that it recognizes the rights of its employees to join labor organizations.

The company said details of Messrs. Kempczinski’s and Easterbrook’s pay would be disclosed in a filing by Tuesday.

Mr. Easterbrook, who is divorced, had a long career at McDonald’s. Before becoming CEO, he worked as head of the company’s U.K. business, which he helped return to growth by modernizing its restaurants, revamping the menu and portraying McDonald’s as environmentally friendly—tactics he later employed at the company more broadly. Mr. Easterbrook, who was born in Watford, England, was the second non-American to lead the company, after the late Charlie Bell of Australia.

Mr. Easterbrook left McDonald’s in 2011 to become CEO of Britain’s PizzaExpress Ltd. and then Japanese-style noodle bar chain Wagamama Ltd. Two years later he returned, eventually becoming McDonald’s global chief brand officer.

Within months of becoming CEO, he enacted several changes, including committing to switch to cage-free eggs, antibiotic-free chicken and hormone-free milk; raising workers’ pay above minimum wage and giving different geographic markets more control over the menu.

His pay as CEO rose with McDonald’s share price, which closed Friday at $194. His compensation peaked in 2017 at a total of $21.8 million including $9.1 million in incentive-based pay. He received $15.9 million in total compensation last year. He also sits on the board of Walmart Inc

Hole in the wall with scarily good American-Style food located at 215 Northeast 6th Avenue, Delray Beach after 23 years was forced to move- because the landlord sold the building it was in. A few months later (January, 2017) the “former” hole in the wall re-opened 3-times larger at 892 Southeast 5th Avenue, Delray Beach serving the same scarily good American-Style food!

All Jeff Eats can tell you guys, is that if you’re into absolutely dynamite burgers/ wings/ bbq ribs/ fried zucchini/ onion rings/ French fries/ tuna salad/ chili/ fried chicken/ onion soup/ meatloaf so-on and so forth, portions that could choke a horse, super reasonable prices and a staff that can’t do enough for you- Granger’s Grille is a must try for you!

Granger’s is a 38 seat bar-grill located on Federal Highway. The joint has something like 10 seats at the bar and a handful of booths and tables…one waitress-one busgirl-3 in the kitchen and that’s the whole shooting match. By the way, the waitress and busgirl are also the bartenders. The bathrooms are out-houses in the parking lot.

Granger’s food is absolutely great. Appetizers, burgers, salads, main dishes everything is delicious. How that little kitchen bangs out so much delicious food is beyond me, but in the 30-40 times that I have eaten at Granger’s everything was right on the money.

I am telling you, that this little joint is a MUST for you. Wear tee shirt/shorts so you don’t look stupid. The joint is open Monday-Saturday for lunch and dinner. The prices are also dirt cheap and if you are there on a Saturday Night you have to try the brick of meatloaf that is one of this joint’s specialities.

From the outside, Granger’s looks like a D U M P. Try it, you will love it.

Chick-fil-A sent an email promoting National Sandwich Day on Sunday. Did they forget they’re closed that day?

Chick-fil-A mistakenly promotes National Sandwich Day, apologizes
USA TODAY
Kelly Tyko, USA TODAY
USA TODAYNovember 1, 2019

Popeyes vs Chick-fil-A: Southerners (try) to settle the great chicken sandwich debate

Chick-fil-A fans firmly have it ingrained in their minds – and stomachs – that the chicken chain is closed on Sundays.

But the Atlanta-based fast-food chain apparently forgot when it sent an email to some of its loyalty members this week.

“Calling all sandwich lovers,” the email that also promoted the Chick-fil-A One program said, “Some prefer it grilled, others fancy the original. No matter which Chick-fil-A sandwich you love, order yours on November 3 for National Sandwich Day.”

This year, the made-up food holiday held annually on Nov. 3 falls on a Sunday, which also happens to be the day that rival Popeyes’ chicken sandwich – the one that prompted this summer’s Chicken Sandwich War – returns to restaurants.

Chicken Sandwich War: Popeyes announces return date of its chicken sandwich and takes a dig at Chick-fil-A

Another email followed Thursday with the subject, “Well … this is awkward.”

“We recently sent an email that included a message about National Sandwich Day, which naturally we were very excited about,” the email reads. “We didn’t realize it falls on Sunday when we are closed. We apologize for the confusion and hope to see you soon (Monday-Saturday).”

In a statement sent to USA TODAY, Chick-fil-A poked fun at its own mistake.

“The cows sometimes get over-eager on their quest for self-preservation,” Chick-fil-A said in the statement. “They have been reminded that Sundays are off limits.”

Popeyes took a dig at Chick-fil-A earlier in the week by announcing its chicken sandwich would return on a day the competition was closed.

In a short YouTube video, a highway sign showing Popeyes and Chick-fil-A’s names is updated to add the words “open Sunday” under Popeyes, next to the “closed Sunday” under Chick-fil-A.

***** NYY Steak, (Seminole Casino Coconut Creek) 5550 Northwest 40th Street, Coconut Creek, Florida 33073, (954) 997-6700.

Way-back on 2/15/12 Jeff Eats told you guys about NYY Steak located in the Seminole Casino Creek Coconut Creek- in Coconut Creek. That “review” is down-below…

Long story short, since that “review” was published, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have eaten in NYY something like 5-times, with the latest “outing”- being last night. For what it’s worth, all of the meals that Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have had, were all right on the money!

Last night, I got to thinking that Jeff Eats rarely if ever hears- NYY Steak mentioned in conversations about South Florida’s best steak-joints. No ifs, ands or buts- the 26oz bone-in-ribeye with grilled onions and French fries- that I had last night and didn’t come close to finishing- could easily be matched against the best of breed down here in sunny South Florida-same story for Mrs. Jeff Eats’ pan seared snapper!

Anyway,

Jeff Eats just wanted to mention NYY Steak to you guys, again…

It’s a very good steak joint!

***** NYY Steak, (Seminole Casino Coconut Creek) 5550 Northwest 40th Street, Coconut Creek, Florida 33073, (954) 997-6700.

Go figure!

One of the best-“upscale steakhouses” in South Florida is located at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek in- Coconut Creek…That’s right, the casino where you-gotta wear an oxygen mask because the cigarette smoke is so brutal—as part of a recently completed $150,000,000 renovation/expansion has opened an absolutely georgeous looking steakhouse with fabulous food and service. You can check www.seminolecoconutcreekcasino.com for menu/prices/photos. By the way, NYY is a joint venture–Seminole Indians/New York Yankees (there is another NYY at Yankee Stadium).

NYY…New York Yankees, get it? All kinds, of New York Yankee black/white photos, autographs…no dark wood–or dim lights here…but rather, a great looking open kitchen, light oak woods, bright lights, plenty of glass. Like I said before, an absolutely gorgeous looking joint.

When you check NYY’s menu, try not to get sticker-shock…no question about it- that $51.75 24oz bone in ribeye is “high” even for an upscale steakhouse–Now, I maybe going out on a limb here, but I think- that casino-joints like NYY get a ton of customers using their casino “PLAYER’S CLUB” rewards/points to pay the bill. If I’m right—the restaurant can charge more than what most folks would consider “normal”- because many customers aren’t using real-money. So, if you go there, I think you will find that many of the “diners” are eating on-the-arm.

At this juncture of the discussion, let me tell you that NYY looks totally out of place at the Seminole Casino. Nothing for nothing, but the Seminole Casino isn’t in this boy’s opinion–an upscale looking property. Now, there may-be something more developing at the Seminole Casino that’s gonna get it looking more like the Hard Rock operation in Hollywood-so NYY may eventually make sense, but for right now, NYY looks like a fish out of water. Personally, I don’t see non-casino players making special plans/reservations to eat at NYY, despite the fact that its food is absolutely dynamite.

A recent dinner had me “doing” the aforementioned 24oz ribeye, 28oz porterhouse ($54.75), veal chop milanase ($44.50), roast chicken ($28.50), lemon pepper halibut ($31.50), steak fries ($9.50), lobster mac & cheese ($11). Every item was delicious. On the service front, excellent without the “snotty” know-it-all attitude you find at many upscale steakhouses.

There are two ways to play NYY Steak. You can gamble your heart out…and accumulate points to spend or you can just fork over cash or your credit card at the end of the meal.

NYY Steak is a homerun…pun intended!

NYY Steak is open Monday, Thursday-Sunday 5pm-11pm. The joint is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
