Real simple tale to tell- Park Avenue makes some outrageously delicious bbq baby backs and other stuff. Jeff Eats has been eating there (7 South Florida locations) for years and I can’t recall even one bad meal!

Just so you know, Park Avenue really isn’t into “smoke”- let’s just say pressure cooked meats finished-off on a gas grill- trust Jeff Eats, the ribs-so on and so forth, come out absolutely delicious!

Like I said a few seconds ago, I’ve been eating there for years- delicious food, reasonable prices, terrific service, big portions- Go!- you’ll become a fan!

On April 29, 2008 I told you guys about Park Avenue BBQ Grille…a small-casual-very reasonably priced-Florida based “bbq-chain.” Last night, I had dinner at Park Avenue’s newest location (#9) which just opened in Boca Raton…and the food is terrific.

Park Avenue’s newest spot—is located in the free-standing building formely occupied by Bucky’s BBQ. From what I can tell, other than hanging a few new signs and decorations, the joint has the same interior as Bucky’s had…and I gotta tell you, the cozy 98 seat dark wood table/ booth–dimly lit–small bar decor is great looking. For those of you not familar with this chain’s other 8 locations–they seat close to 150, have large bar areas and are brightly lit. Although the Boca location “looks” different than its brethren…the food is exactly the same, delicious.

Park Avenue is a small “local” South Florida bbq chain. I have lost count on how many there are, but 7 or 8 units sounds about right. Over the years I have eaten in 3 of its locations a total of something like 35 times and taken out so much food, that it’s amazing that I haven’t had to have an angioplasty done. Anyway…my last Park Avenue outing was last night (at the Boynton Beach location) and I have to tell you, that the joint’s baby-back ribs and bbq chicken are absolutely delicious. This joint also makes corn-fritters doused in powder sugar that are terrific.

Do yourself a favor and visit a location in your area. Delicious food. Big portions. Pleasant and efficient waiters/waitresses. All kinds of menu “price specials.” Park Avenue is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. If you wear anything dressier than tee shirt/shorts you will look silly.

This Beyond Genius Hack Prevents Your Bananas From Going Bad

When you buy a bunch of bananas you immediately enter into a race against the clock. If you don’t consume all the bananas within the week, you’re left with unappetizing browning and mushiness. Although you can find a gazillion tips online about how to keep bananas fresh for longer, there’s one specific hack that has proven itself worthy of trying.

As one would expect, there’s a lot of science going on during the banana browning process — specifically the release of ethylene gas and enzymatic browning. As Instructables tells us, fruits and vegetables release enzymes when picked, peeled, or cut. When introduced to oxygen, these enzymes start the browning process, as does the presence of ethylene gas, which certain fruits like bananas, apples, and tomatoes, release.

But even if you’re fascinated by the science of the ripening process, you probably still get peeved when it starts to happen. Luckily, there’s a super easy way to slow that browning down.

To keep your bananas yellow for longer, wrap the stems as tight as possible in plastic wrap, tin foil, or strips cut from plastic bags. Doing this will lessen the amount of ethylene gas being released from the stem, which ripens and browns the rest of the fruit.

An even more effective way of keeping the brown at bay is to separate each banana and wrap their stems individually. Again, this further decreases the amount of ethylene gas escaping and also makes the bananas easier to grab and go.

Test this hack out for yourself and we guarantee you’ll be pleasantly surprised. And if/when your bananas do finally go brown and mushy, freeze and save them for a banana bread or throw them in a compost pile to cut down on waste.

Let me get the necessities out of the way…Mellow Mushroom is a very-casual pizza joint located in Delray Beach. Its menu is loaded with appetizers, salads, calzones, subs and pizzas…all at neighborhood pizza joint prices. The joint also has something like 100 beers, if that’s your game! A recent taste-test had me “sampling” a meatball ricotta pizza, greek salad, steak & cheese calzone and chicken parmesean sub. The food at this joint is absolutely dynamite.

Just so you know, Mellow Mushroom is a small-chain with joints in 15 states…there are a handful in Florida. The guys who own this company have a terrific concept…great food combined with a “retro-1960’s-70’s decor”…When I was eating at Mellow Mushroom, I “expected” Scott McKenzie, Grace Slick, John Densmore and H. Rap Brown to come walking in at any moment… Mellow Mushroom’s website www.mellowmushroom.com will provide you with menu/prices and loads of pictures “showing” that decor I just mentioned.

Real Casual. Great Food. Great Ambiance.

I highly recommend that you give Mellow Mushroom a try.

The joint is open Monday-Thursday 11:30am-11pm, Friday-Saturday 11:30am-midnight, Sunday noon-11pm.

Laspada’s is a “sub-grinder-hoagie-heroes”!(or whatever you call them) joint. There are currently 3 South Florida locations…Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Davie and Coral Springs. The Lauderdale joint is the original location…I must have gotten stuff there at least 20 times…I have also been to the Coral Springs location twice…Never been to the Davie store.

The guys who own Laspada’s are “masters” at making phenomenal-fantastic hoagies. Take a look at Laspada’s website at www.laspadashoagies.com for menu/pricing…also take a look at the photos of the stores and sandwiches being made.

If you want to eat absolutely incredible stuff, then you absolutely want to get to a Laspada’s. The joints are open 7-days a week for lunch and dinner. Keep in mind, that there is very limited seating and the game is primarily takeout.

Trust Jeff Eats when I tell you that Chris’ gyro wrap is off the chart-it is absolutely delicious. Just so you know, the original Chris’ review (5/21/10) has a different address listed-when Jeff Eats first “tried” Chris’ it was a small hole in the wall, the new location is in the same shopping center and seats a ton of people inside and on an outdoor patio. Without any hesitation, Jeff Eats will tell you, Chris’ Taverna is one of the best Greek restaurants in South Florida.

Chris’ Taverna is a GREEK RESTAURANT…maybe 20 formica tables inside, 20 outside. You can order at/pickup at the counter…or you can be fancy and have a waitress/waiter take care of you. Menu/prices/loads of photos at www.christaverna.com. This is strictly a shorts/tee shirt ensemble kinda-joint.

Now…and I really mean this, outrageously delicious food. I have to rank the Greek salad ($8.95), gyro entree ($11.95-2 sides), souvlaki entree ($11.95-2 sides), grilled baby lamb chops entree ($20.95, 5 chops-2 sides) right up there with the best that I’ve had in a Greek joint.

Really, that simple.
