Kristof’s Kafe (Davie)
***** Kristof’s Kafe.
Jeff Eats recently “got” the following e-mail…
Jeff Eats,
Love the blog.
You know your stuff.
Really enjoyed many of your picks.
What’s a great place to eat breakfast in Davie?
Going to be down in that area for business late next week.
Thanks,
Joe Esposito

***** Kristof’s Kafe, 8912 West State Road 84, Davie, Florida 33324, (954) 475-8977.
Let Jeff Eats start by saying that Kristof’s Kafe is my kinda joint…a “mom & pop” diner–that serves terrific food, has super pleasant service/big portions and reasonable prices.
You can check menu/prices/photos at www.kristofskafe.com.
Jeff Eats recently tried Kristof’s for breakfast and I gotta tell you, that the- banana caramel french toast, western omelette, cinnamon challah french toast, country fried steak “sampled” were absolutely dynamite. No ifs or buts–this was one of the best breakfasts I’ve had in a very long time… Just so we are straight, I “did” breakfast—so how Kristof’s lunch/dinner stuff is-is open to conjecture—based on breakfast, I’d bet that those meals are real-strong. While I’m pontificating here, you guys do know, that Jeff Eats has never met a bagel, bialy, french toast or omelette that he didn’t like–but like everything in life-there are degrees…you got your IHOPs and then you got your Kristof’s-like I said, a matter of degrees. By the way-I take back that claim to having never met an omelette I didn’t like…check Jeff Eats 9/26/10 “story” on Cup ‘N Saucer in Lake Worth…Mrs. Jeff Eats says, I got a memory like an elephant (we’ll leave it at that).
Anyway…
Jeff Eats really enjoyed Kristof’s Kafe.
Kristof’s Kafe is open Sunday-Wednesday 8am-3pm, Thursday-Saturday 8am-9pm…breakfast served Monday-Saturday 8am-noon, Sunday all day.
Rich Little (Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park- Pompano Park)
* Rich Little.
Here’s a recent e-mail that Jeff Eats received from reader KE (Delray Beach)…
Jeff,
My buddies and I play poker at the Isle at least once a week. We like this casino because it is no-smoking. Every so often I ask the pit boss if I can get some complimentry tickets to the shows that they have. In the 5 years that I have been going there, the pit bosses have never come through for me or any of my friends. Meals yes, tickets no. Last week, one of the pit bosses offered me 2 tickets to see Rich Little on February 20th. I told him okay and my wife and I are planning on going.
What’s your take on the all of a sudden asking me if I wanted tickets and what do you think of Rich Little?
____
KE:
If you do some checking, you will find that Jeff Eats isn’t a fan of how the Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park is run.
Putting that aside, I will tell you that OUTDOOR COMEDY SHOWS usually suck! That’s about as blunt as I can be. Audiences at outdoor venues (which Isle is) are very- shall we say, in-attentive! I suspect, that the reason you got the free offer- is because the Isle was having big-big trouble finding paying customers for its seats ($15-$25).
As for Rich Little, if I got my facts straight-the well-worn comedian/impressionist is pushing 78- and to be quite honest with you, personally I don’t think that the guy has been funny since President George W. Bush was the Governor of Texas. Jeff Eats hasn’t seen Rich Little in years, but I did look at some of his recent You Tube-stuff and I gotta tell you, that the Johnny Carson crap that he does/did, is kinda dated. The crazy thing, is that many who will be in the audience probably never even “watched” Johnny Carson or know who Andy Rooney (another of Little’s favorites) is/was! If I was guessing, today, Little is probably best “known” for his guest appearances on those Dean Martin TV Roasts- copies of which you can “buy” all-night-long from never ending infomercials!
On the outdoor venue itself, like I said before- comedians in general don’t like-to play to outdoor crowds. For sure, guys like Bob Hope and Jerry Colonna did well entertaining our troops overseas, but they had what’s called a captured audience…my money says that most of our GIs went to the shows just to see Ann-Margaret.
My thoughts, go to the show…you don’t like, no big deal!

Cupcake Stores’ Advertising Campaign!
* Cupcake Stores’ Advertising Campaign!
Now, if cupcake stores converted themselves to gourmet donut-shops with coffee, Jeff Eats would bet you a nickel that many of them (that’s is- cupcake stores) would stay in business.
But they won’t and most (that is cupcake stores) won’t be around for too much longer!
Rhino Doughnuts & Coffee (Boca Raton, Lauderdale by the Sea, Sunrise)
***** Rhino Doughnuts & Coffee.
Every so often “somebody” builds a better mousetrap…and Rhino Doughnuts & Coffee currently with 1-location in Boca Raton, 1-location in Lauderdale by the Sea and 1- location set to open (in 10 days-give or take) in Sunrise- got an absolutely dynamite doughnuts & coffee mousetrap.
Rather than bother you with minute-detail…handmade gourmet doughnuts and coffee! Real simple game, 700-1,000 square foot stores with a handful of tables. Doughnuts are made in an off-premise commissary and delivered to the stores. The Boca Raton store is open 7am-5pm, the Lauderdale by the Sea store is open 7am-9pm. Each store receives 1,000 donuts (in the morning)- and when sold out, that’s it for the day…in addition to doughnuts, the stores have a mix of cookies, pastries and coffees to help keep the doors “open”! Nothing for nothing, usually by 3pm ALL OF THE DOUGHNUTS in both stores are history…
Here’s a call for you guys…assuming the folks behind Rhino- don’t really screw things up, – in a few short years you’ll be seeing Rhino stores all over South Florida. Trust Jeff Eats when I tell you, the “food” is off the chart, the stores are the perfect size, the price points just right (regular doughnuts (not so fancy ones) are $8.99 a dozen and the gourmet doughnuts go for something like $1.50 a pop)…only time will tell, if the Rhino folks can successfully take what is currently a 2-store concept to a greater number of stores! For what it’s worth, “these” doughnuts are handmade- and Jeff Eats is thinking… really-really labor intensive- so like I just said, we’ll just have to wait and see if Rhino can take its game-to the next level!
Jeff Eats loved the doughnuts (I picked-up a mixed dozen at the Boca joint), Mrs. Jeff Eats loved the coffee (said it was as good as Dunkin” Donuts)…

Kon Chau Chinese Restaurant ( Miami)
***** Kon Chau Chinese Restaurant, 8376 SW 40th Street, Miami, Florida 33155, (305) 553-7799.
Let’s call Kon Chau Restaurant another “out of sight out of mind” casualty.
Jeff Eats hadn’t been back- since I first mentioned the joint on 11/20/2008.
Ate there last night and the food was off the chart…delicious wonton soup, pan fried dumplings, egg rolls, bbq spare ribs, sweet & sour pork, pepper steak, chicken fried rice! I know-I know, pretty straight-up Jewish Brooklyn American Chinese stuff circa 1957…trust Jeff Eats, Kon Chau got the full dim sum lineup and “real” Chinese food that you professional foodies require!
No hesitation here- telling you that Kon Chau is right up there with Miami’s best Chinese joints.
Original story is down below and you can check menu/prices/info at konchauchinese.com.

***** Kon Chau Chinese Restaurant, 8376 SW 40th Street, Miami, Florida 33155, (305) 553-7799.
Kon Chau is right up my alley… I’m going to guess that this “hole in the wall” amazingly cheap Chinese dim sum joint has been around at least 30 years. I am also willing to bet, that the furniture-decorations today are exactly as they were when the joint first opened. Now about the food…this joint makes some absolutely delicious dim sum and must have at least 60 items…Kon Chau also has loads of top notch Cantonese dishes, so everyone is covered and no one is going to go home hungry…an hour later, that may-be a different story!
Anyway…if delicious Chinese food is your game, this is a real good joint to know about.
Kon Chau is open Monday-Saturday 11am-9:30pm and Sunday 10am-9:30pm.
Bill Haley and His Comets
* Bill Haley and His Comets.
The legendary Rock N Roll band- was Bill Haley and His Comets.
Son or no son, this Bill Haley Jr. And The Comets is nothing more than a TRIBUTE act…
By the way, being a tribute act doesn’t mean that you can’t-play…it does mean that you have absolutely nothing to do with the original group.
Jeff Eats is a great and I do mean a great ice skater, but that doesn’t make Son Jeff Eats a great ice skater. Capice!
Not picking on Bill Haley Jr. in particular- just trying to point out to you guys that when you “see” stuff advertised you should kinda “read” the fine print…trust Jeff Eats, the guy booking & promoting the show is hoping & betting that you don’t & won’t!
By the way, I can’t ice skate worth a crap…just making a point!
