Sweetened Drinks Might Raise Men’s Risk for Heart Failure
By Dennis Thompson, Jr., HealthDay News

Two servings daily linked to higher odds for the disabling condition, study says.

After accounting for other factors, researchers found at least two servings of sweetened drinks a day increased heart failure risk by 23 percent.

Tuesday, November 03, 2015

People who regularly consume sodas or sweetened fruit drinks may have a higher risk for heart failure, researchers report.

In the study, Swedish men who drank two or more servings of sweetened beverages a day had a 23 percent higher risk of suffering heart failure, said lead author Susanna Larsson, an associate professor of epidemiology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

“People who regularly consume sweetened beverages should consider reducing their consumption to lower their risk of heart failure as well as obesity and type 2 diabetes and possibly other diseases,” Larsson said.

Sweetened drinks have been linked to stroke, diabetes, obesity and other health problems, but so far scant attention has been paid to the effects of excess sugar on heart health, said Dr. Christopher O’Connor, director of the Heart Center at Duke University School of Medicine and editor-in-chief of the journal JACC: Heart Failure.

Heart failure occurs when the heart grows too weak to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Patients tire easily, suffer shortness of breath and develop fluid buildup in their feet, ankles and legs.

Only about half of those diagnosed with heart failure are still alive five years later, researchers said in background material. More than 23 million people worldwide have heart failure, including about 5.8 million in the United States.

Soft drinks have been associated with an increased risk in high blood pressure and heart disease, so it makes sense that sweetened beverages might also increase the risk of heart failure, the researchers said.

Using national registry data, they tracked the health of 42,400 men living in two counties of Sweden between 1998 and 2010.

The men, aged 45 to 79, were asked to record their average consumption of 96 food and drink items over the preceding year. One serving of a sweetened drink was defined as 200 milliliters, or nearly 7 ounces.

The questionnaire made no distinction between drinks sweetened with sugar or artificial sweeteners. Fruit juices, coffee and tea were not included in the study.

Over an average of 12 years of monitoring, more than 3,600 new cases of heart failure were diagnosed. More than 500 people died of the condition.

After accounting for other potential factors, researchers found that at least two servings of sweetened drinks a day increased heart failure risk by 23 percent, compared with people who consumed no soft drinks or sweetened beverages.

“We controlled for other food groups that could reflect an overall healthy or unhealthy diet such as intakes of fruits, vegetables, fish, processed red meat and coffee consumption,” Larsson said. “We also adjusted for total energy intake.”

The findings were published online Nov. 2 in the journal Heart.

While the study only included men, “we expect that the association would be similar in women,” Larsson said. However, he added that because this is an observational study, it does not establish a cause-and-effect relationship.

Men in Sweden tend to weigh less and are more physically fit than American men, which means this association is likely to be amplified in the United States, O’Connor said.

“In the United States, you have people who are farther down the curve,” O’Connor said. The potential effect “would be larger and faster here.”

O’Connor noted some design problems that affect the clarity of the findings. For example, food surveys tend to be inaccurate because they rely on people’s memories of what they eat, and the beverage question included all sweetened drinks, whether they contained sugar or an artificial sweetener.

But this likely “just reduces the signal,” masking what is probably an even greater effect on heart health than observed here, O’Connor concluded. “The fact the signal is still there means it’s probably real,” he said.

The American Beverage Association responded to the findings by drawing attention to a new industry initiative aimed at reducing beverage calories in the American diet by 20 percent for every person by 2025.

“This initiative will have significant real-world impact by helping people reduce their consumption of calories and sugar from beverages,” the industry group said in a statement. “To reduce the incidence of heart disease, health professionals, industry and others must work together to educate Americans about all the risk factors and encourage people to maintain a healthy weight by balancing their calories and physical activity.”

The Moody Blues

“The Moody Blues are still the Sistine Chapel of popular music.” – Rolling Stone

In an endless sea of rock and pop formats, The Moody Blues have distinguished themselves through four decades as that shimmering jewel vindicating rock music as a substantial artistic contribution to Western culture. Since the 60’s, as a part of the historic original British invasion of Supergroups, The Moody Blues have lit up the hearts and minds of millions of rock fans with inspiring anthems like “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon” and “I’m Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band),” which express universal themes of love, compassion and peace. The band’s unique style of music consistently finds airplay on radio stations globally and continues to illuminate concert arenas around the world. From being immortalized on The Simpsons to having their music featured in movies, television and in national advertisement campaigns such as VISA, The Moody Blues are embedded in not only music history but in pop culture.

The band and Universal Music Enterprises (Ume) recently released The Moody Blues’ new definitive, career-spanning collection, TIMELESS FLIGHT, in both 17-disc and four-CD configurations. The 17-disc set is housed in an LP-sized hardbound slipcase and includes 11 CDs of digitally re-mastered album tracks, previously unreleased mixes and outtakes, and complete concert recordings. It also includes three DVDs of rare television performances, promotional videos and a previously unreleased concert film; in addition to three DVD-Audio discs of long out-of-print 5.1 album mixes, a 120-page hardback collector’s book, faithful reproductions of Moody Blues memorabilia, and more. The four-CD TIMELESS FLIGHT boxed anthology culls audio highlights from the larger collection, including standout album tracks, singles and B-sides, previously unreleased mixes, and concert and radio performances.

Last year, the group celebrated the 45th Anniversary of their monumental 1967 album, “Days of Future Passed,” which features “Nights in White Satin,” one of the first four minute songs played on the radio, becoming one of the biggest selling singles in history, and hitting #1 three separate times on Billboard. In summer of 2012, “Nights” was the lead track in the movie and on the soundtrack of the Johnny Depp film, “Dark Shadows.” Universal Music Enterprises also released a new Moody Blues greatest hits collection in two editions titled ICON and ICON 2 — single disc and double disc formats.

Since they first hit the rock scene The Moody Blues have continued to produce music that bridges the gap between rock, classical and pop-rock genres without ever wavering in their integrity and commitment. Featuring the altruistic inflections of guitarist/vocalist Justin Hayward, bassist/vocalist John Lodge and drummer Graeme Edge, The Moody Blues’ sound has held its ground with exquisite harmonies over and over again, in a genre of music that is ever-changing. Since their formation in England, The Moody Blues have created music time and time again that offers rock music a depth that is unprecedented and inspiring.

The Moody Blues have sold in excess of 70 million albums worldwide and have been awarded an astonishing 14 platinum and gold discs. Their incredible roster of hits include: “Nights In White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon,” “Ride My See Saw,” “The Story In Your Eyes,” “Isn’t Life Strange,” “Question,” “I’m Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band),” “Your Wildest Dreams,” and “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere,” to name a few. The Moody Blues’ No. 1, Top 5, Top 10, Top 20, Top 40, Multi-Platinum, Platinum and Gold albums and singles, have generated sold-out tours on a consistent basis over the course of several decades, making them one of the top-grossing album and touring bands in existence.

Throughout the group’s indelible history, they have been embraced by every major music journal around the world. Says the New York Post, “The trio looked remarkably sound and sounded untouched by time.” Adds USA Weekend, “…a great rock n’ roll band with staying power beyond anybody’s ‘wildest dreams.’” “One of the biggest strengths the band has, is knowing what they do, and doing it extremely well,” praises the Toronto Sun.

Throughout the 60’s and 70’s, the group released a string of concept albums including DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED, IN SEARCH OF THE LOST CHORD, ON THE THRESHOLD OF A DREAM, TO OUR CHILDREN’S CHILDREN’S CHILDREN, A QUESTION OF BALANCE, EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR and SEVENTH SOJOURN, which can be listened to from beginning to end like turning the pages of a novel telling the story of our lives. The albums garnered the band respect and acclaim that would place them in that unusual distinctive category as pioneers of concept-rock with a message.

In 1979, the band released OCTAVE, and stepped away from the concept theme by exploring new musical elements which spawned two hits “Driftwood” and “Steppin’ In A Slide Zone.” In the 80’s, while punk rock, power-pop and new wave were dominating the charts, The Moodies showed their resilience against the changing tides of trends and released the album LONG DISTANCE VOYAGER. The album went straight to the top and landed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with two hit singles: “Gemini Dream” and “The Voice.” The Moody Blues then released THE PRESENT in 1983 with the hits “Blue World” and “Sitting At The Wheel”; followed by another album that would win over a new generation of young fans in the mid-late 80’s entitled THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE, which gave birth to the hit song “Your Wildest Dreams”– one of their biggest selling singles of their career to date. The next two albums continued their momentum with the hit single, “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere” from SUR LA MER, the counterpart to “Your Wildest Dreams” and 1991’s “Say It With Love” from KEYS OF THE KINGDOM.

The 90’s marked yet another phase of the band’s illustrious career. The Moody Blues had reached a milestone in 1992 –– their 25th anniversary of the release of DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED. With this concept in mind, the band performed live in concert with a symphony orchestra. The event was filmed at the Red Rocks concert venue in Denver, Colorado, for a PBS special, home video and album titled THE MOODY BLUES – A NIGHT AT RED ROCKS WITH THE COLORADO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. The response from the broadcast, video and album was so phenomenal, the band took the symphony concerts on the road and sold out everywhere.

During this time period, The Moodies released their Gold-selling boxed set collection entitled TIME TRAVELLER, a greatest hits package in 1997 entitled THE BEST OF THE MOODY BLUES, and a double-CD ANTHOLOGY album. The group welcomed the new Millennium with the release of the appropriately titled STRANGE TIMES, which was their first studio album in eight years, charting yet again in the Top 100 on Billboard. Recorded in Genoa, Italy, the band took on the role of “producers” of the album, another first for the The Moodies.

The band then released a second PBS special and live album in 2001 entitled Hall Of Fame: Recorded Live At The Royal Albert Hall; and The Moody Blues: Live At The Royal Albert Hall, respectively. The performance re-visited the excitement of their live performances with a symphony orchestra, recorded and filmed in England’s famed Royal Albert Hall. The live concert, available on video, marked the first live Moody Blues performance released on DVD.

Also in 2001, The Moody Blues were featured in the highest grossing giant screen production of the year in the IMAX film entitled JOURNEY INTO AMAZING CAVES. Featuring two new Moody Blues songs, “We Can Fly” and “Water”; and their classics “Nights in White Satin” and “Ride My

Seesaw,” the film was awarded IMAX’ “Soundtrack of the Year Award,” which was simultaneously released on CD.

In 2003, The Moody Blues released the first holiday album of their career on Universal Records entitled DECEMBER. The band’s majestic, orchestral mix of rock and pop fit beautifully in the new Christmas CD – from its lush originals, to the band’s choice of traditional songs. Produced by Hayward and Lodge, DECEMBER features five original songs, five cover songs, and one newly arranged traditional tune with additional lyrics.

Nashville paid tribute to the band in 2004 with the release of MOODY BLUEGRASS, in which 31 of Nashville’s top musicians recorded and translated the group’s 70’s and 80’s classics into bluegrass form. Produced by mandolinist David Harvey, renowned bluegrass artists from Alison Krauss and Harley Allen to Tim O’Brien put their bluegrass interpretations on “Your Wildest Dreams,” “I’m Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band),” “Nights In White Satin,” and many other Moody hits.

The Moodies released the Image Entertainment DVD and CD THE MOODY BLUES: LOVELY TO SEE YOU, LIVE in 2005, recorded at the historic Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. This recording was pure Moody Blues, marking the first live performance recorded sans orchestra, since their historic 1969 live release THE MOODY BLUES LIVE +5.

In 2008, the band embarked on a tour of the U.K. and Europe; and Universal Music Enterprises re-released the group’s first seven albums, containing the band’s legendary chart-topping singles of the 60’s and 70’s. Each re-release by UMe features exclusive bonus tracks, alternate versions, radio sessions and outtakes; telling a story about the progression of rock & roll while diving into further detail with the inclusion of live BBC recordings and bonus tracks.

In 2011, in addition to the new ICON releases, a follow-up Moody Bluegrass tribute album was recently released featuring cameos by the band, Vince Gill, Ricky Scaggs, and more. MOODY BLUEGRASS TWO…MUCH LOVE. “Nights In White Satin” also landed at #2 on the UK Rock Chart, and at #27 on the BBC Radio 1 chart, making it the fourth time that “Nights” has charted in its 40-plus year history. The song’s resurgence ignited after a recent cover performance by Matt Cardle, winner of Simon Cowell’s hit UK show “The X Factor.”

In 2014, Universal Music Enterprises released two box sets titled “Timeless Flight,” The Moody Blues’ definitive, career-spanning collection, in both 17-disc and four-CD configurations. The lavish 17-disc set is housed in an LP-sized hardbound slipcase and includes 11 CDs of digitally re-mastered album tracks, previously unreleased mixes and outtakes, and complete concert recordings.

In 2014, Justin Hayward released a new solo album on Eagle Rock Entertainment titled Spirits Of The Western Sky – his first since 1996’s The View From The Hill; and live performance DVD based on his solo tour titled Justin Hayward’s Spirits…Live – Live At the Buckhead Theatre, Atlanta, recorded at The Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta on August 17, 2013. Hayward’s live DVD currently airs on PBS stations nationwide in 2015, and hit the Top 20 PBS revenue raising specials of the year.

John Lodge releases his first solo album since releasing Natural Avenue in 1977 on May 5, 2015, on Esoteric Antenna, a label of the Cherry Red Records Group, titled 10,000 LIGHT YEARS AGO. 10,000 LIGHT YEARS AGO also reunites Lodge with special guest contributions from former MOODY BLUES members – flutist RAY THOMAS and keyboardist/mellotron player MIKE PINDER on the song “Simply Magic.”

With the Hayward and Lodge solo projects, and 2015 Moody Blues tour this year, The Moody Blues have always been there to provide the world with live music that is engaging and appropriate to the times. The Moody Blues will always offer that unique experience of rock & roll delivered with connectedness, commitment and a sentiment of peace.

Real simple tale to tell you, Jeff Eats is thinking- that Tucci’s Fire N Coal Pizza is one of the best coal-oven pizza joints in Florida.

No bs-here, its salads, pizzas, pastas and entrees are all- off the chart- and I really can’t think of another Florida coal oven joint that makes better coal oven wings.

Tucci’s is an absolute must try.

Jeff Eats can’t even begin to imagine- that you won’t love this joint!

Regular, Jeff Eats’ readers know that…I love a good pizza. I don’t care if it’s brick-oven, wood oven, coal oven, this oven or that oven…just as long as it tastes good. You also do know that I speak fluent Italian…”Give me two slices and a large Coke.”…don’t you? Over the past 3-years or so, South Florida has been “hit” with a ton of new pizza joints which play the “coal oven-chicken wings” card…guys like Anthony’s, Coal Mine, Carolina’s, Mona Lisa, just to name a few…and by in large, they are all pretty decent… of course, some are better than others…that’s why Jeff Eats is here.

Anyway…last night, I gave Tucci’s Fire N Coal Pizza in Boca Raton a shot. The joint which has been open for something like 3 months… has indoor seating for about 50 and maybe 10 outside. The menu has 4 appetizers, chicken wings, escarole & beans, eggplant rollatini and sauteed broccoli rabe & sausage…2 salads, Italian and caesar…loads of coal/wood cooked pizzas…2 desserts, cheesecake and cannoli…beer and soda by the bottle.

Let’s make this review easy. I had an Italian salad, margherita/ricotta pizza, chicken wings. The food was delicious. The salad was cold, fresh, crisp… The chicken wings were seasoned with garlic and carmalize onion, The pizza was thin crusted, crisp, perfectly well-done, right on the money sweet sauce…As for service, pleasant as can be…Price-wise, small wings (10) $9.95, salad which could have feed 3 ($10.95), pizzas–depending on what you order (that’s obvious) start at- small ($13.95)-large ($17.95).

Tucci’s Fire N Coal Pizza is a really good coal-oven pizza/chicken joint. I enjoyed its food and casual “hole in the wall” atmosphere. By the way, you can check Tucci’s menu/prices at www.tuccispizza.com.

Tucci’s is open for lunch & dinner Tuesday-Sunday…the joint is closed on Monday.
