Got something absolutely terrific for you guys…An Intimate Evening with Ambrosia- Special Guest Appearance by Martin Dube.

Real simple tale to tell you guys, on Tuesday, March 1st- Ambrosia who from 1975-1980 received 5 Grammy Nominations, had 5 top 20 singles, sold millions of records and played to SRO concerts all over the world-is set to appear at the intimate 400 seat The Plaza Ballroom in North Palm Beach. Trust Jeff Eats on this one, this concert is gonna be a SRO AFFAIR! This past January, 2016- Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats saw Ambrosia at the Pompano Beach Amphitheater and the SRO crowd of 3,000 absolutely loved the band’s appearance. If you can keep a secret, Ambrosia today, is as good as Ambrosia of 1975-1980. For you guys not familar with The Plaza Ballroom- the joint seats something like 400 and every seat works! The facility employs a gigantic video “wall” that enhances the music and sound – producing an indoor concert “experience” that is simply amazing.

If you guys can keep a secret, Martin Dube, the Canadian Superstar Singer Impressionist also on the bill- is alone worth the price of admission. Jeff Eats has seen Dube a number of times and the man is absolutely amazing, but that’s just between you guys and Jeff Eats.

from ambrosialive.net
Ambrosia (formed in 1971) is a hit-producing and eccentric progressive rock band, known for their seductive ballads and post-disco sound, hailing from Los Angeles, California, U.S.

Originally comprised of frontman David Pack, bassist Joe Puerta, keyboard player Christopher North, and drummer Burleigh Drummond, Ambrosia’s earliest inspiration came from the melodic pop of The Beatles and The Beach Boys. The group was subsequently influenced by the vocal harmonies of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, before attending a King Crimson concert and having their musical perceptions altered greatly. Following a poorly performed audition at A&M Records, the group impressed Rubicon Management with a demo and later inked a deal with 20th Century Fox Records.

With major-label backing Ambrosia issued their eponymously-titled debut album in February 1975. Spawning the hits “Holdin’ On To Yesterday” and “Nice, Nice, Very Nice”, the latter a musical composition set to Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s “Cat’s Cradle”, the album was subsequently nominated for the Grammy for Best Engineered Album. Produced by the extolled Alan Parsons, the group subsequently appeared on Parsons’ project album “Tales of Mystery and Imagination” in 1976. Despite its progressive nature and occasional inaccessibility, Ambrosia’s debut sold remarkably well and earned a host of favourable reviews.

Following a period of constant worldwide touring, the band returned to the studio with Alan Parsons to release their sophomore album “Somewhere I’ve Never Travelled” in September 1976. The album earned Ambrosia their second Grammy nomination and spawned the popular radio singles “Somewhere I’ve Never Travelled” and “Can’t Let A Woman”. With the success the record afforded the group, Ambrosia subsequently signed with Warner Bros. Records, later contributing the song “Magical Mystery Tour” to the musical Beatles documentary “All This and World War II”.

Taking a step back from the rich vocal arrangements and luscious orchestration, the band’s third full-length “Life Beyond L.A.” saw Ambrosia adopt R&B and jazz influences. The album spawned Ambrosia’s biggest hit to date “How Much I Feel”, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, with a number of other singles receiving regular radio airplay. Subsequent touring alongside Fleetwood Mac, Heart, and the Doobie Brothers did wonders for the group’s live reputation, however the release later marked the departure of keyboardist Christopher North.

In 1980 Ambrosia issued the full-length “One Eighty”, which produced two of the year’s biggest hits “Biggest Part of Me” and “You’re the Only Woman (You & I)”. Later securing three Grammy nominations, the album was toured internationally, notably with guitarist Cliff Woolley on the Japanese leg. Following the arrival of Bruce Hornsby with the departure of David Lewis, Ambrosia released their fifth full-length album “Road Island” in 1982. Despite the minor hit “How Can You Love Me” the album was a commercial disappointment and after which the group parted ways. The greatest hits compilation “Anthology” hit the shelves in 1997, three years later the group reformed with Doug Jackson permanently replacing Pack, for Ambrosia’s 30th anniversary tour.

***** DeNucci’s Soft Serve, 2210 Sadler Road, Ferandina Beach, Florida (904) 310-6387.

Got an absolutely terrific fast food ice cream/burger/hot dog joint for you guys- DeNucci’s Soft Serve in Ferandina Beach.

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, if DeNucci’s which is open Sunday noon-8:30pm, Monday-Thursday 11am-9pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-10pm was “by” my house in Boca Raton- I’d probably weigh something like 347 lbs.- because, I’d literally eat there every day!

DeNucci’s (denuccis.com) describes itself as…”DeNuccI’s Soft Serve an ice cream / frozen yogurt / frozen custard shop based in Fernandina Beach – Amelia Island, Florida. We feature BOTH soft serve and hard hand dipped ice cream products. We also serve Nathan’s hot dogs, sandwiches, wraps and large soft pretzels. We have walk up windows, a drive up window and inside and outside seating. We’re proudly family owned and operated and our shop is catered toward families. You’ll notice our outdoor eating area and children’s play place. DeNucci’s is a great stop for the whole family to enjoy eats, sweets & treats!”

Long story short, the other day Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “tried” DeNucci’s for lunch and the joint absolutely killed- the 2 grilled Nathan’s hot dogs, bacon cheeseburger, onion rings, French fries, chocolate base Toffee Coffee Twister and vanilla base Turtle Twister were all right on the money delicious! By the way, if you think-Dairy Queen’s Blizzards- you’ll know what DeNucci’s Twisters are “all about.”

image

Like I said a couple of seconds ago, if DeNucci’s was closer to Jeff Eats’ Boca Raton home- I’d literally eat there every day- and if that isn’t a good enough endorsement of the joint, then I don’t know what is!

If you’re into- real easy going casual stress free no waitstaff delicious food dining- then you gotta try DeNucci’s Soft Serve!

Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Dinner (Council Oak Steaks & Seafood- Hollywood)

* Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Dinner.

Jeff Eats just got this “invite” from the Council Oak Steaks & Seafood which is located in the Seminoe Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood.

Just doing the “math” in my head- $450 x 6% (sales tax) x 20% (tip)= $572.40.

Sounds like a “real bargain” to Jeff Eats.😊

Now maybe- if Rip Van Winkle was gonna be there…

If you wanna go- seminolehardrockhollywood.com.

Anyway, let me get going here- gotta go pay a couple of bills this morning…City of Boca Raton quarterly water and Hyundai monthly car lease!- interesting, using that $572.40 per person number, Jeff Eats after paying those two bills still has $76.53 left to spend on something else!

***** Shiver’s BBQ, 28001 South Dixie Highway, Homestead, Florida 33033, (305) 248-2272.

Every so often Jeff Eats gets asked, “What’s one of your best bbq joints?”

Just so you know, it’s Shiver’s BBQ- the only problem I got with the joint is that it’s in Homestead and Jeff Eats lives in Boca Raton! Trust me, BIG DRIVE!

Long story short, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “just” finished eating lunch there…bbq babyback ribs, bbq beef ribs, bbq chicken, corn nuggets, cornbread soufflé, sweet potato souffle, corn on the cob, French fries- everything was dynamite!

Jeff Eats first told you guys about Shiver’s on September 18, 2011…like I said earlier, Big Drive!

All I know, if Shiver’s was closer to my Boca Raton home, I’d “literally” be eating in the joint all the time!

***** Shiver’s BBQ, 28001 South Dixie Highway, Homestead, Florida 33033, (305) 248-2272.

Let’s play Southerner…got a great bbq joint for you, Shiver’s BBQ in Homestead. Shiver’s has been around for something like 50 years. Just so you know, we are talking “smoked goods” here—so, if the sweet sauces of Tony Roma’s or Bobby Rubino’s are your game–come prepared! Personally, I’m not a huge smoked-fan…but Shiver’s like the Three Pigs, has the formula for Just Right. You can check menu/prices at www.shiversbbq.com.

Shiver’s got a cute idea going…you eat at long picnic tables which line the joint. So in theory, you “could” be eating with strangers. Over the years, I’ve seen this seating thing done at other joints—Shorty’s B-B-Q in Miami (9200 South Dixie Highway) which has been around since 1951, has a similar setup (see review 7/10/08)…I also remember eating in a few Amish joints in Lancaster, Pennsylvania—they had “group” seating, but also had family style portions—but that’s a whole ‘nother story.

A recent outing had me doing…corn nuggets, macaroni & cheese, cornbread souffle, french fries, babyback ribs, bbq chicken, pulled pork. Let me make this real-simple…Shiver’s BBQ is right-up there with the best bbq joints that- this originally from Brooklyn boy has ever eaten in. Everything was outrageously delicious.

Y’all–Shiver’s is a homerun.

Shiver’s BBQ is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-9pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-10pm.

The article below the ‘Pretzel Picture” first appeared on August 22, 2015. You guys should read that “story” first and then read from the top of this article!

Yesterday Jeff Eats received the following e-mail from reader ANONYMOUS READER IN DELRAY BEACH.

Jeff,

Just wanted to let you know that my uncle’s execution was stayed and his case is being reviewed by the state’s Court of Appeals.

You were so kind in giving me a list of food/restaurants and I just wanted you to know that I checked out each and every one of them. You made great calls and all of them were terrific.

I just wanted to return the favor and wanted to tell you that I recently found an absolutely great Italian restaurant, Firi Bistro Pizzeria & Restaurant (225 SW 6th Street, Pompano Beacg 33060, (954) 960-5489, firibistro.com). It’s a small restaurant and it’s decor is very unassuming. This restaurant makes delicious pizzas and pastas. I lthink that you will really enjoy it. Please try it on me and use the enclosed $100 gift card to pay the bill. Once again, thank you for being so kind and once again please have a wonderful dinner.
_______

ANOYMOUS READER IN DELRAY BEACH:

Thanks for the update on your uncle’s case.

I am glad that you enjoyed Jeff Eats’ picks!

The gift card is totally unecssary…that said, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats will definitely use the card and give Firi Bistro Pizzeria & Restaurant a shot.

As for Firi, you and other Jeff Eats’ readers- can look for a “story” sometime in the near future.

One final thought, I’m kinda thinking that you have no “business” or other relationship with Firi other than being one of its customers.

Thanks again,

Jeff Eats

Who Has The Best French Fries, Teriyaki Wings, Soft Pretzels, Meatloaf & Cherry Italian Water Ices In Florida? I live in Delray Beach and my uncle who is on Florida State Prison’s Death Row asked me to look into last meal possibilities.

Thank you in advance,

________

ANONYMOUS READER IN DELRAY BEACH:

Your question is kinda impossible to answer. You know- what Jeff Eats likes, you may hate- what I find too soft, you may find to be too hard- so forth and so on!

I will tell you, that if I was on Florida State Prison’s Death Row planning my last meal- I wouldn’t bitch if Zinger’s Delicatessen’s French fries, Burger & Suds’ teriyaki wings, Philly Pretzel Heaven’s pretzels, Granger’s Grille’s meatloaf and Cecilie’s Gourmet Italian Ices’ cherry Italian water ices found their way onto the menu.

One final thought, check with your uncle- as to his thoughts on adding this- Charm City Burger Company burger to the menu…it maybe a bit presumptuous on my part, but Jeff Eats is thinking that at this stage of the game- your uncle probably isn’t into calorie counting or worried about cholesterol counts- so what the heck!

Thanks for reading.

One of Jeff Eats’ favorite menu items…

CLASSIC “FLAT GRIDDLE” ANGUS SLIDERS
$9.99 (3 mini angus burgers topped with cheddar/grilled onions/ketchup/mustard/pickles, side of French fries)

Johnnie Brown’s

Latest Review: 12/12/09

Johnnie Brown’s is a really cool sports bar. The joint makes absolutely delicious angus sliders. Those sliders come with a side of French fries-which between you guys and me- kinda “suck”- But, the sliders more than make up for the crappy- bland tasting-definitely from a “frozen” bag fries (trust Jeff Eats, they look better than they taste). While I’m on the subject of food, Johnnie Brown’s -3 cheese grill sandwich is amazing delicious and its BBQ baby back ribs are real good. Throw in live music every night, tons of tvs, hip young waitstaff and great views of Alantic Avenue for “people watching” and you got a joint that- you gotta try!

***** Johnnie Brown’s, 301 East Atlantic Avenue, Delray Beach, Florida 33483, (561) 243-9911.

Back on May 26, 2009, I told you guys about Johnnie Brown’s…at that time, Johnnie Brown’s was “under-construction” and was expected to open in October, 2009. Well!…Johnnie’s didn’t make the October date, but did open this past Wednesday (December 9, 2009). Do me a favor and read that original “review” so I don’t have to waste time typing the same background info…

Last night I ate at Johnnie Brown’s and I will bet you anything, that this “American Style–Roadhouse–Make Believe Biker Bar” joint is a major homerun. This joint has outdoor covered patio seating and indoor seating…to say that this is an easy going joint would be an understatement—your tee shirt/shorts/flip-flops ensemble is perfect. At this juncture, take a look at Johnnie’s website www.johnniebrowns.com for menu/prices.

Johnnie Brown’s has a full outdoor patio bar…a menu loaded with reasonably priced appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches, wings, bbq ribs. Last night I did—house salad, sliders, bbq ribs, grilled chicken breast, onion rings, french fries, sweet potatoes fries, jalepeno corn bread—trust me on this one, the food is outrageously good. The only item that I didn’t care for– was the jalepeno corn bread which came with the ribs, thought it was kinda bland tasting…the sweet potato fries were easily the best that I have ever eaten–and over the years, I have eaten my fair share of sweet potato fries. On the service side, now remember the joint was only open 3 days, was excellent. Our waitress, Rhonda knew the menu inside and out…the food came out right on time, beers, sodas and waters were constantly attended to—this joint was operating as if it had been opened 30 years.

Johnnie Brown’s “looks-like a biker-bar” (think Pee Wee Herman!)…neon signs—great ambiance. So—great decor—great food—great service—reasonable prices—and live-bands playing nightly and you got HOMERUN.

Wolfgang’s Steakhouse (Miami)

***** Wolfgang’s Steakhouse, 315 South Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, Florida 33131 (305) 487-7130.

Got a real good “upscale” steak joint for you guys, Wolfgang’s Steakhouse in Miami.

If Wolfgang’s works for you, it also has 5-locations in Manhattan, 1-in Beverly Hills, California, 1- in Somerville, New Jersey, 1-in Waikiki, Hawaii, 1-in Roppongi, Japan, 1-in Marunouchi, Japan, 1-in Osaka, Japan and 1-in Seoul, Korea For our purposes, the Miami joint is open Monday-Thursday noon-11:30pm, Friday noon-midnight, Saturday 5pm-midnight, Sunday 5pm-10:30pm. You can check menu/prices/locations at wolfgangssteakhouse.net.

Wolfgang’s “claim” to fame as stated on its website is:

“After 4 decades of experience, it is fair to say that Wolfgang Zwiener learned his craft well. Taking the core principles from his years as Peter Luger’s head waiter, Wolfgang didn’t just duplicate an exceptional steakhouse; he improved upon it making Wolfgang’s Steakhouse extraordinary. Wolfgang’s Steakhouse is serving lunch and dinner seven days a week including all major holidays.”

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, if you told me that you’d been Peter Luger’s Head Chef or maybe even Peter Luger’s Assistant Head Chef, or maybe even Peter Luger’s Assisant’s Assistant Head Chef you might have gotten a “rise” out of me- but Head Waiter, I don’t think so! Look at it this way, when Jeff Eats lived in Manhattan, Bill Cosby was a neighbor that I saw something like 3-4 times a week for something like 5 years- and I’m not a “charged” sex offender! See what I mean? 🙂

Anyway,

Last night Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple ate at Wolfgang’s- sizzling bacon appetizer, fresh mozzarella and beefsteak tomato salad, porterhouse for 2, grilled Chilean sea bass, veal chop milanese, fried onion rings, lobster mac & cheese, sautéed onions and I gotta tell you- everything was right on the money! If you promise not to tell Wolfgang- all four of us were very impressed by his- upscale but easy going décor, his pleasant-easy going and very competent wait-staff and his “prices”- which weren’t too over the top for the delicious food we had!

slider1

Let me wrap this up for you…

Jeff Eats loved Wolfgang’s Steakhouse- and on second thought, I’m thinking- that Wolfgang definitely learned a trick or two from his Peter Luger- “gig.”
