If you are looking for a real good New York Kosher Style Deli (and who isn’t?) that does breakfast, lunch and dinner- you gotta checkout Ruven’s in Boynton Beach.

Jeff Eats singled-out the joint’s pastrami on rye for special mention- that said, trust me when I tell you- it’s all good at Ruven’s! Of course some-things are better than other things, but Jeff Eats is kinda thinking that you’ll really-enjoy whatever Ruven’s serves up!

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, when you walk into Ruven’s- its look/its smell/its vibe is gonna have you thinking your’re in a NY Kosher/Kosher Style Deli somewhere in the 5- boroughs!- and you won’t have to hold down a second job to be able to pay the check!

Ruven’s is open 7 days a week 8am-8:30pm.

Back on February 20, 2011 Jeff Eats told you guys about Ruven’s a New York Kosher Style Deli that had just opened for business in the San Marco Shopping Center in Delray Beach. To make a long story short– Ruven’s opened in a spot where two bagel/delis had previously failed. I guess, Ruven’s owner, Steve Ratinetz was betting on real good food and “three times the charm” to make Ruven’s a winner…

Anyway…

Here it is 3-years later and Ruven’s is “sort-a” still around. Now follow me, a few months ago, Ratinetz moved Ruven’s…3 maybe- 4 bays down-into a store formerly occupied by Lenny’s New York Grille.

Anyway…

No doubt in Jeff Eats’ mind…the ‘new” Ruven’s is now in a much better spot–that being right next door to Publix. Same food and service-with the “new” Ruven’s featuring a really cool “lower NYC east-side” circa 1940-1950 decor. Having eaten in Lenny’s numerous times, I can tell you-that Ratinetz did a great job in combining his own decorative ideas with Lenny’s decor remnants.

Just wanted to re-introduce you guys to an old-favorite of mine.

Now…Does Ruven’s qualify under the “three times the charm” rule?

Bingo!— Home Run!

If you are looking for a terrific-New York Kosher Style Deli—your wish has been answered. Say hello, to Ruven’s which opened last Wednesday in Delray Beach. For right now, the joint is open 7 days a week from 8am-3pm—look for “dinner” to be added sometime in late March.

Just some background info… “this” Ruven’s is owned by Steve Ratinetz who in the mid 1990′s-2003 owned/operated Ruven’s in Plainview, New York—which was an absolutely terrific kosher deli. My January 25, 2011 Ruven’s of Long Island writeup- has more “history” if you are a history-buff.

You know and I know, that South Florida has more bagel delis than you can shake a stick at…just for the record, Ruven’s is not and I repeat the word NOT, a bagel deli. For sure, it has the requisite “500″ types of bagels, bialys and onion boards—that said, this joint is all about pastrami- corned beef- brisket- turkey- stuffed derma- potato pancakes- blintzes, chopped liver-stuffed cabbage-fried kreplach-matzo ball soup—that rival the best stuff served in NYC, Chicago…or for that matter, anywhere that you formerly called home.

If there is one thing that Jeff Eats knows—it’s good deli.

This afternoon, in no particular order– I did a “taste test” of pastrami, corned beef, brisket, turkey off the bone, matzo ball soup, cabbage soup, stuffed derma, potato pancakes, chopped liver. fried kreplach…absolutely delicious.

Based on Jeff Eats’ “maiden outing”—I’m putting Ruven’s right up there with South Florida’s best New York Kosher Style Delis. Throw-in huge portions at reasonable prices…and I can’t see Ruven’s not quickly developing an enormous following.

You now know about a terrific deli—this one is a keeper!

***** Windy City Pizza, 401 West Atlantic Avenue, Delray Beach, Florida 33444, (561) 266-2811.

Got a real good 4-month old pizza joint for you guys- and I do mean real good, Windy City Pizza in Delray Beach!

The joint seats something like 20 people and “specializes” in Chicago Style thin-crust pizza. Throw in a handful of appetizers, salads and hot subs- and you pretty much got the whole menu-shooting match! You can check menu/prices/info at delraywindycitypizza.com. The joint is open Tuesday-Friday 11:30am-9pm, Saturday-Sunday 3pm-9pm, closed Monday.

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats “most” people know that Chicago is known for deep-dish pizza…as Gomer Pyle once said (actually it was more like 23,489 times) surprise, surprise, surprise!- in reality there is more to that story than meets the eye (if you choose to believe Jeff Eats’ friend Warren who has lived in Chicago for the past 41 years)- North Chicago is known for deep-dish pizza and South Chicago is known for thin crust pizza!

Long story short,

Last night Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats ate at Windy City (for those who don’t know, Chicago’s nickname is The Windy City) and I gotta tell you that the joint makes some of the most delicious thin crust pizza that we’ve had in a very long time. Just so you know, Windy City’s round pizza is cut into small squares and features a delicious super thin crispy crust and a dynamite sweet sauce. For good measure, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats also split a house salad and a fried zucchini appetizer, both of which killed!

Let Jeff Eats wrap this baby up for you, Windy City makes delicious thin crust pizza. Based on Jeff Eats being on a diet 😏- I passed on trying Windy City’s sub-offerings! But trust me when I tell you, I definitely have plans to do so, in the very near future.

* Cantina Max, 6450 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton, Florida 33487, (561) 609-2426.

Wonton Garden Chinese Restaurant (Hallandale)

***** Wonton Garden Chinese Restaurant, 709 West Hallandale Beach Boulevard, Hallandale, Florida 33009, (954) 454-7259.

Got a real good Chinese joint for you guys, Wonton Garden in Hallandale. Just so you know the lay of the land, Wonton Garden is basically a ‘take-out” joint- but if you want to eat there, it’s got a 1/2 dozen or so tables.

Long story short, last night Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “had” Wonton Garden’s food over at our friends’ Linda & Bob’s house in Hallandale Beach. Bob paid the bill and Jeff Eats only involvement with the- meal (other than eating the food) was that I accompanied Bob when he drove over to Wonton Garden to pickup the takeout order!

image

image

image

image

Bob & Linda ordered- wonton soup, egg drop soup, egg rolls, bbq spareribs, pan fried dumplings, sweet & sour chicken, pepper steak, honey chicken wings, ham fried rice, shrimp with Chinese vegetables, pork lo mein and I gotta tell you- the stuff was real good. Now, for sure- some dishes were stronger than others, like the egg rolls, honey garlic chicken wings and bbq spareribs absolutely killed, while the pepper steak to Jeff Eats’ refined palate was a drop on the bland side. All in all, Wonton Garden scored quite well on Jeff Eats’ Brooklyn Jewish American Chinese Taste Test circa 1957!

image

image

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, I’ve eaten in/taken out from my fair share of South Florida Chinese joints. After awhile they all kinda run-into each other, if you know what I mean? With that in mind, if Wonton Garden was by-my Boca Raton house- I’m thinking that I would definitely be a pretty steady customer.

To wrap this one up…

You guys do know that food “reviewing” is purely a subjective situation, with that in mind- like I said a few seconds ago the egg rolls, bbq spareribs and the honey garlic chicken wings killed- and between you guys and Jeff Eats, rank right up there with the best that Jeff Eats has had in a very long time…so if you do get to Wonton Garden “see” if I made a good call on those 3-items!

Wonton Garden Chinese Restaurant is open Monday-Thursday 11am-10pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-10:30pm, Sunday noon-10pm.
