Real simple tale, Sonny’s Famous Steak Hogies is what Jeff Eats calls an “out of sight, out of mind” joint.

First told you guys about Sonny’s Famous Steak Hogies on May 30, 2013- hadn’t been back until yesterday when Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats did lunch- the 2-steak and 1-meatball hogies killed!

This Sonny’s joint is an absolute must try.

All I know, if Sonny’s was closer to my Boca Raton neighborhood, Jeff Eats would be a REAL GOOD STEADY CUSTOMER!

Last Sunday night, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats were at the Hard Rock to see The Rascals in concert. Sitting next to us, were Lynee and Lou Cantor the owners of the “32 East” restaurant in Delray Beach…chit chat, chit chat—and Lou tells me, that if I want to eat great steak subs..then, I gotta try Sonny’s Famous Steak Hogies in Hollywood. Real fast, The Rascals killed it, absolutely fabulous concert…and plans are being set for Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats to check-out 32 East, which if the reviews in Yelp, TripAdvisor, OpenTable and various newspapers, magazines and publications are legit– is a terrific American Style joint (by the way, last night- Jeff Eats’ pal Eben–raved about 32 East’s hamburger, but then again Eben thinks that Ted Williams was better than Joe D. so his opinion maybe suspect-here).

To make a long story short…Lou really knows his stuff.

Jeff Eats got down to Sonny’s yesterday and “tried”– steak hogie, chicken parm hogie, tuna salad hogie, meatball hogie…and I gotta to tell you, this joint’s subs aren’t just good, they are amazing-good…right up there with the best that I’ve ever eaten…and you guys know that Jeff Eats has “done” his fair share of subs. Point of interest, Sonny’s bread is baked fresh every day—it alone is worth the trip…and we’re just talking about a sub roll here!

Just a drop of color…

Sonny’s has been in the same location since 1958. In addition to hot/cold subs, its got salads, pastas, pizzas—there is waitstaff service. Back in 2009, Guy Fieri did his tv show Diner, Drive-Ins & Dives there…so, this isn’t a hidden jewel discovered by Jeff Eats…yesterday at 1pm Sonny’s was jammed.

Just so we are straight, this guy-Guy Fieri as far as Jeff Eats is concerned, isn’t the be -all and end -all when it comes to knowing what great joint- food is all about. Nothing for nothing, but I honestly believe that huge-tv money/and other factors that have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with food- “slant” Fiere’s opinions. Take this for what it’s worth…Jeff Eats has been to a number of Fieri’s “picks” and much of the food that he raved about was mediocre at best…While I’m on the “subject”–Jeff Eats for years has questioned the various “reviews” that appear in South Florida’s newspapers and other publications. You guys are smart enough to know, that you gotta-check joints out for yourselves. On the most basic level, what Jeff Eats likes, you may not like and vice versa.

Anyway- Guy made a good call on Sonny’s in that- its subs are definitely dynamite.

Real simple…whether you call them subs, hoagies, grinders or whatever your regional preference is—you will absolutely love and I do mean L O V E Sonny’s Famous Steak Hogies…and no, Jeff Eats didn’t -spell hoagies wrong, that’s what Sonny’s calls the sandwiches.

You can check menu/prices/video of Guy Fieri at www.sonnysfamoussteakhogies.com.

The joint is open Monday-Saturday 11:30am-9:30pm, Sunday 11:30am-8:30pm.

Finally…Jeff Eats always says, a solid given deserves a solid in return…or something like that–anyway, since Lou gave me the heads up on Sonny’s–why don’t you guys check-out 32 East at www.32east.com and “see” if it’s a joint that might be of interest to you…solid returned

Got a real good breakfast & lunch joint for you guys…Goldies Restaurant in Naples.

Real simple concept going on here- maybe 12 4-top tables, a counter that seats 2, and a menu loaded with breakfast stuff, appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads. The joint is open Monday-Saturday 7am-3pm (breakfast is served all-day) closed on Sunday. Very reasonable prices and super and I do mean super pleasant and personable wait-service!

You can check menu/prices/info at goldiesrestaurant.com.

Jeff Eats loved Goldies (The Ultimate Breakfast and the corned beef/pastrami combo on rye which I “had” were both off the chart!) and just in case you’re a foreigner or from outer space or something- tee shirts/shorts are the dress of the day. By the way, the way “we” know that you are either a foreigner or from ouster space- the opened toed sandals with black socks that the males of your species wear-are the tip-off!

Finally,

There is an old Vietnamese saying “That one picture is worth a thousand words.” With that in mind…

***** Applebee’s, 15058 Jog Road, Delray Beach 33433, (561) 865-8757.

Got a good story for you guys…

Last night Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple ate at the Applebee’s located at 15058 Jog Road, Delray Beach. I’m assuming that you guys know what “an” Applebee’s is…if not, American Style -national chain with a full liquor bar/tvs, tons of reasonably priced appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, wings, entrees, desserts.

Anyway,

Prior to last night, the last time Jeff Eats had eaten in an Applebee’s was September 8, 1998. The reason that I remember that date, I was in an Applebee’s (1720 South Federal Highway, Delray Beach) and watched Mark McGuire hit homerun #62 breaking Roger Maris’ record. We’ll leave McGuire’s steroid story for another day.

Now nothing for nothing, back in 1998 Jeff Eats didn’t exist-it wasn’t until 2006 that I “decided” that you guys needed to know -what, where and how I ate. So other than the-homerun I really don’t remember the “actual” 1998 meal. In addition, for the life of me, I can’t figure out why 1998 was the last time I ate at Applebee’s.

To make a long story short,

Very dear friends, Norman and Lynne swear by this chain. In addition to an apartment in North Miami they have a home in Belmont, North Carolina and an apartment in New Paltz, New York.–over the past 25 years -their numerous road trips have literally had them in Applebee’s all over the place.

Last night the four of us ate in Applebee’s and I gotta tell you- the food, service and reasonable prices blew me away. No fooling here-the house salads, bbq grilled wings, grilled chicken wontons/tacos, cheeseburger sliders, bbq ribs, grilled sirloin steak, french fries, onion rings, mashed potatoes, mozzarella sticks, white brownie/vanilla ice cream, pub pretzels with caramel sauce were all delicious.

Trust Jeff Eats on this one, no ifs ands or buts- last night’s “American Style” meal was one of the best I’ve had in years. To be perfectly honest with you, the food ran circles around most of the stuff served in South Florida’s sports bars–Not to start a pissing match or nothing, but chains like The Cheesecake Factory, Chili’s, Friday’s, J Alexander’s got nothing on Applebee’s.

On service-when we walked in, we were actually greeted by a pleasant- energetic hostess. Sammie our waitress knew the menu-cold making some great recommendations and made sure our glasses were never empty. One other thing, Jeff Eats notices things and I gotta tell you that George (GM) was all over the joint- visiting tables, chatting with customers, helping/bussing tables-doing what a GM is suppose to do, that being staying on top of his restaurant. Trust Jeff Eats on this, I’ve seen many a GM in action (or shall I say inaction!) and this guy was good-real good…The restaurant was real-busy, yet the service/food were all “handled” as they were suppose to be.

On the price front-real reasonable…check www.applebees.com for menu/prices/locations.
I will tell you, that Applebee’s gives you a ton of food for the money. When you’re on Applebee’s website checkout its- 2 eat for $20 or $25 deals.

Like I said 37 seconds ago, Applebee’s is a national chain. This “story” is about the Delray Beach Jog Road restaurant-that said, there are plenty of Florida locations for you to eat at.

Applebee’s is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-10pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm.

In closing, Norman and Lynne you were so right…Jeff Eats should have gotten “back” sooner.

Applebee’s is dynamite!

Drinking Tea Can Cause Genetic Changes in Your Body

* Drinking Tea Can Cause Genetic Changes in Your Body.

Read this article on yahoo.com this morning.

Thought I’d pass it on to you guys…

___________

Yahoo Beauty Korin Miller
Writer
Yahoo BeautyJune 1, 2017
In the battle of coffee versus tea, the latter has come in second for years in the United States. But new research suggests that people might want to give tea another look, as there’s new evidence that it can actually influence your genes.

Drinking tea specifically causes epigenetic changes (chemical modifications that turn our genes off or on) in women, according to a study from Uppsala University that was published in the journal Human Molecular Genetics.

For the study, researchers looked at DNA methylation, a gene signaling tool that can put genes in the “off” position. DNA methylation is linked with suppressing tumor growth and decreasing bodily inflammation, and scientists wanted to determine how much drinking tea and coffee has to do with it. To figure out the link, researchers took blood samples from more than 3,000 people and analyzed them for DNA methylation.

Here’s what they discovered: DNA methylation took place in women who were tea drinkers, specifically in genes that are known to interact with cancer and estrogen metabolism. (Research has linked poor estrogen metabolism with an increased risk of breast cancer.) The same effect wasn’t found in men or in people who drank coffee.

While it sounds like good news, study co-author L.H. Lumey, MD, from Columbia University, tells Yahoo Beauty that the findings are “very preliminary.” Researchers also don’t say in the paper whether this is a good or bad thing, but they point out that the methylation finding could indicate that certain components in tea have the potential to be useful in the future. However, they add, “further research is needed to understand how epigenetic changes found in this study affects our health.”

Women’s health expert Jennifer Wider, MD, tells Yahoo Beauty that she’s not surprised by the findings. “It has long been established that our food choices and compounds in different foods can have an impact on modifying disease risk,” she says.

Tea is often considered secondary to coffee in the U.S., but data from the U.S. Tea Association found that Americans drank almost 84 billion servings of tea in 2016. About 80 percent of all tea consumed was black tea, 16 percent was green tea, and the remaining amount was oolong, white, and dark tea — and the vast majority of Americans prefer their tea iced.

While the study’s researchers didn’t have any definitive conclusions, Wider points out that tea has some known benefits. Teas have antioxidant properties, contain less caffeine than coffee, and have compounds called flavonoids that have been linked to a lowered risk of heart attack and stroke. The National Cancer Institute also points out that the predominant polyphenols in green tea — EGCG, EGC, ECG, and EC — and certain elements in black tea known as theaflavins and thearubigins have antioxidant activity that may help fight tumor growth. Certified dietitian-nutritionist Lisa Moskovitz, CEO of NY Nutrition Group, tells Yahoo Beauty that tea can also protect against free radical damage and oxidative stress, promote healthy metabolism, and fight bodily inflammation.

Gina Keatley, a certified dietitian-nutritionist practicing in New York City, tells Yahoo Beauty that science definitely makes a case for drinking tea. “Given all of the positive research on tea, it may be beneficial to include tea in your routine,” she says. But, of course, drinking tea alone won’t help ward off disease, which is why Keatley recommends having other healthy lifestyle factors as well. “Without a generally healthy diet and exercise [routine], drinking tea may not be effective,” she says. Moskovitz agrees. “Tea can be a great addition to anyone’s diet, and is often a good replacement for other sources of caffeine,” she says. “However, nothing replaces a balanced diet and regular exercise when it comes to disease prevention and optimal health.”

So, if you’re wondering what to drink on a hot summer day, it can’t hurt to reach for an iced tea. Not only will it help refresh you — it could have a positive impact on your health.
