A recent e-mail received by Jeff Eats…

Jeff,

Maybe you can help our Home Owner’s Association with finding a terrific local 80’s tribute dance band for an upcoming date in late January, 2018. Our community is located in Palm Beach Gardens and we expect to draw between 250-300 to the indoor event which will also feature a large themed buffet.

Any help that you can give us will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

John Davidson

***** On The Roxx *****

If you like ’80’s’ music, you absolutely positively got to check out- On The Roxx–a local 5 piece South Florida band which is developing a huge following. Recently caught them at Boston’s On The Beach in Delray Beach–and I am telling you, they are dynamite. Checkout www.ontheroxxband.com for schedule/videos.

Like I said before DYNAMITE…some of the best covers of Katrina And The Waves, Joan Jett, The Go Go’s, Rick Springfield that I have ever heard. The band has two terrific frontmen–Jack James and Diane DeNoble…they’ll have you believeing that the original artists are in the house.

Just so you know, over the next 3 months the band has 4- free-public appearances set to go…1 in Coconut Creek, 2 in Port Saint Lucie and 1 in West Palm Beach.

Do yourself a solid and catch them, you’ll have a great time.

***** DISH OF THE WEEK (Sunday- 10/1/17- Mo’s Bagels & Deli).

One of Jeff Eats’ favorite menu items…

SWEET & SOUR CABBAGE SOUP
$5.34-$8.55 (pint-quart)

Mo’s Bagels & Deli
2780 Northeast 187th Street
Aventura
(305) 936-8555
Latest Review: 8/24/08

Really not too much to say, other than Mo’s Bagels & Deli is one of the best bagel-deli joints in South Florida and its sweet & sour cabbage soup is off the hook delicious!

***** Mo’s Bagel & Deli, 2780 NE 187th Street, Aventura, Florida 33180, (305) 936-8555.

Mo’s Bagel & Deli is a New York-Kosher Style-Bagel/Deli joint. Mo’s is open Monday 7am-4pm and Tuesday-Sunday 7am-9pm.

You know and I know, that South Florida has more New York-Kosher Style-Bagel/Deli joints than there are Chins in a Chinese phonebook…some are good, some are very good, some are great and some are lousy.

If you live in the Aventura area, Mo’s (which falls into the very good box) is a joint that you want to know about. Excellent hand-rolled bagels…delicious appetizing…very good deli meats and other stuff like potato pancakes and soups…clean/large joint…very reasonable prices. The joint is always jammed for Saturday-Sunday breakfast…Enormous take-out business. Mo’s is located about 5 minutes from the Aventura Mall.

You now know, what you need to know, about Mo’s.

Our Story

It all started in the 50s… Would you believe we started out as a small chain of convenience stores? It’s true. Way back in 1958. We were called Pronto Markets. In ‘67, our founder, the original Trader Joe, changed our name (yes, to Trader Joe’s) and the way we do business.

We made the stores bigger (if you can imagine), decked the walls with cedar planks and donned our crew in cool Hawaiian shirts. Most importantly, we started packaging innovative, hard-to-find, great-tasting foods under the “Trader Joe’s” name. That cut our costs and saved you money. Still does. And that’s important, because “Value” is a concept we take very seriously. And by ‘Value,’ we mean great everyday prices on all of our great products — no sales, no gimmicks, no clubs to join, no special cards to swipe… How do we do it?

We buy direct from suppliers whenever possible, we bargain hard to get the best price, and then pass the savings on to you.
If an item doesn’t pull its weight in our stores, it goes away to gangway for something else.
We buy in volume and contract early to get the best prices.
Most grocers charge their suppliers fees for putting an item on the shelf. This results in higher prices… so we don’t do it.
We keep our costs low — because every penny we save is a penny you save.

It’s not complicated. We just focus on what matters — great food + great prices = Value.

Okay, we skipped over a few milestones, but you can catch them in the Trader Joe’s Timeline. It’s a trip.

Jeff Eats was just by- Yamato Road & 441 in Boca Raton. Saw a huge tractor-trailer “unloading” a ton of cars- all with New York license plates!

To save you “ NY car owners” the time-effort of writing Jeff Eats…

Got an absolutely terrific Chinese-takeout joint for you…Gary Woo Express in Boca Raton.

Just so you know, Jeff Eats originally “reviewed” this joint on August 19, 2009…suffice it to say, I loved its food back in 2009. Anyway, about 8 months ago new owners took over and to their credit, the food they are “banging-out” is even better than the original stuff. Trust me on this one, Gary Woo Express is right up there with the best Chinese restaurants that Jeff Eats has tried down here in South Florida.

When you check menu/prices at www.garywooexpress.com- in addition to loads of Chinese stuff you will find a huge Japanese menu. For the record, Jeff Eats, didn’t try any of the Japanese items, but if the Japanese food is as good as the Chinese stuff was—Gary Woo Express will be a joint where you can get both-delicious Chinese and Japanese takeout. Just so you know, Gary Woo Express has a couple of tables inside and a handful outside—but this joint is basically a takeout.

Applying Jeff Eats’ 1950’s Brooklyn Jewish Taste Test…sampled items included— won ton soup, tomato egg drop soup, egg rolls, pan fried pork dumplings, bbq ribs, general tso’s chicken, sweet & sour pork, pepper steak, shrimp in lobster sauce, chicken lo mein, roast pork fried rice. The result…Gary Woo Express is one of the best Chinese-takeoout joints that Jeff Eats has tried down here in South Florida. No kidding around, every item “tried” was delicious. To be perfectly honest with you, Jeff Eats’ original plan was to put the “dishes” in some sort of pecking order- but they were all dynamite–so I’ didn’t bother. For you wise-guys out there, No!–Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats didn’t eat “all” that food all by ourselves in one sitting…The fact of the matter, the taste test was conducted in 2-parts…some of the food was picked-up on a Thursday night and some was picked up on Saturday night—so there!

If I got one bitch here, I found the prices a drop- on the high side. No big deal–no second job needed…but the prices were definitely higher than the local competition.

Before I run…if you decide to try Gary Woo Express–when you get to the joint, you’ll find a “menu-rack” outside the front door. The takeout menus in the rack–have coupons and you can use them “right away”— Now that I’m thinking, the coupon that I used saved me 10% off my entire order. The point of all this yapping—use the coupons to off-set the higher-prices I detected.

Gary Woo Express was a “huge” find.

I am telling you, this joint is right up there with best of breed.

Gary Woo Express is open Monday-Friday 11am-10pm and Saturday-Sunday 2pm-10pm.

***** Gary Woo Express, 9874 Yamato Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33498 (561) 483-4889.

Let me be straight-up with you guys…years ago, Gary “Woo” was a neighbor of mine…best friends, nope, but I know the guy. I remember when he opened his first joint- China Dumpling (Boynton Beach), his second joint-Gary Woo’s Asian Bistro (Boca Raton)…if you check, I rated China Dumpling one of the best Chinese restaurants in South Florida. To date, I have not reviewed the Asian Bistro.

Anyway…a few months ago a new strip center opened in Boca Raton…Gary Woo Express is the Chinese “anchor”…this is a takeout -only joint.

Let me start off by saying, that the food that this joint is cranking out is top-notch. Now, in most likelihood, I haven’t gotten stuff from your favorite neghborhood haunt, but based on 2-takeout outings…I’m gonna bet that Gary Woo’s food is better than the food you have been schleping home.

Recent taste-tests of…wonton soup, egg rolls, bbq ribs. pan fried dumplings, roast pork fried rice, sweet sour pork, general tso’s chicken, shrimp in lobster sauce…top-notch. I couldn’t find one item to really complain about.

At this stage of the game…checkout Gary Woo Express website www.garywooexpress.com for menu/prices.

I do have one problem with the joint…some of the prices are off-the chart…waaaaay tooo expensive.

So…you guys now know about a top-notch Chinese takeout joint.

Gary Woo Express is open Monday-Friday 11:30am-10pm and Saturday-Sunday 3pm-10pm.

He’s been called a “cross between Rodney Dangerfield and Ralph Kramden,” but comedian Vic DiBitetto is truly a talent like no other. Famous for his frenetic pace, vivid language and punchline-a-second style, DeBitetto whips the crowd into a hilarious frenzy until the audience is gasping for breath in between laughs. His own sitcom (Hulu’s Don’t Know Jack) was the latest in a long list of achievements for this Brooklyn-born comic, including winning America’s Funniest People on ABC and racking up 22 million views on YouTube (check out his “Bread and Milk” sketch and Justin Bieber rants). Now, after dabbling in film (Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2) and headlining top clubs on both coasts, this hugely talented entertainer steps up to the mic at the Boca Black Box in Boca Raton.

Comedian- Preacher Lawson

* Comedian- Preacher Lawson.

A recent e-mail received by Jeff Eats…

Jeff,

From past columns I know that you follow NBC’s America’s Got Talent show!
What do you think of comedian Preacher Lawson who was a finalist this year on Season 12 America’s Got Talent?

Thanks,
Andy Gold

_____

Andy Gold,

Jeff Eats is thinking that while growing up, Preacher Lawson watched a ton of Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy stand-up videos!

Jeff Eats enjoyed Preacher Lawson’s AGT appearances, that said, Ive seen “his” act many times before, if you get my drift?

Jeff Eats wishes Preacher well, but I wouldn’t bet the farm- that the AGT judges’ superstar predictions for him are in the cards!

(Does Preacher’s picture remind you of someone you know?)

Thanks for reading,

Jeff Eats
