Nino’s Pizza & Restaurant (Orlando)

***** Nino’s Pizza & Restaurant, 6194 Edgewater Drive, Orlando, Florida 32810, (407) 253-7363.

For our purposes let’s call Nino’s Pizza & Restaurant “an out of sight, out of mind joint”…

I don’t know about you guys, but in Jeff Eats’ book- Orlando (where Nino’s is located) and Boca Raton (where Jeff Eats lives) aren’t exactly a hop, skip, and jump from each other!

Last night, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “did” dinner at Nino’s and just- as it did back in 2013 (when Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats last visited) is still pumping out delicious reasonably priced stuff!

Let Jeff Eats wrap this tale up for you guys by saying, if Nino’s was by Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats’ Boca Raton abode, we’d be real steady customers!

The next time you are in Orlando…visiting the kid at UCF, or riding the rides at Disney & Universal, or doing Halloween Horror Night or shopping at some outlet mall—do yourself a huge favor and go eat at Nino’s Pizza & Restaurant–a “mom & pop” red sauce joint that will absolutely blow you away.

Jeff Eats’ poison-Halloween Horror Night at Universal Studios…Mrs. Jeff Eats’ -outlet mall, as if you didn’t see that one coming!

Anyway…

Like I said 9 seconds ago, you guys gotta try Nino’s Pizza. This un-assuming pizza joint, turns out some of the most delicious New York Style Pizza -Jeff Eats has had in Florida. A large 16 inch -thin crusted/sweet sauce pie will set you back $10.95. After you and your family/friends order the pizza, figure on splitting…equally-delicious sausage/peppers/onions stromboli roll ($6.95), a veal parmigiana 10″ sub ($8.45), a meatball 10″ sub ($6.95) and some meat lasagna ($9.95). By the way, based on how Jeff Eats eats, I’m thinking that the aforementioned (that’s the lawyer in me!) family/friends are maybe 3–tops 4 people…if you got more, just order more stuff.

You can check menu/prices/photos at www.ninospizzarestaurant.com

Let me wrap things up here…

Nino’s food was so terrific, that Jeff Eats “took to go” a sausage/pepperoni stromboli roll ($6.95) and a large mozzarella/ricotta calzone ($13) for a next day Boca Raton reheating.

No fooling around here…Nino’s is a must try.

The joint is open Monday-Saturday 10am-9pm, closed on Sunday.

“Zinger’s Delicatessen–1 Year Anniversary”

* “Zinger’s Delicatessen–1 Year Anniversay”

About a year-ago, I told you guys about Zinger’s Delicatessen which had just opened in Boca Raton. One year later–some things bear repeating…

Zinger’s Delicatessen is one of the best, if not the best–New York Kosher Style Deli in South Florida.

I have “reprinted” Jeff Eats’ August 18, 2011 review…and it needs “only” three minor changes:
1: Zinger’s is open 7 days a week for lunch/dinner and for breakfast on Saturday-Sunday,
2: Zinger’s “current” potato knishes are as good as the pushcart-ones I mentioned.
3: Zinger’s website is up and running.

If real New York Kosher Style deli is you game, you gotta try Zinger’s Delicatessen!

***** Zinger’s Delicatessen, 7132 Beracasa Way, Boca Raton, Florida 33433, (561) 826-7323.

If, delicious- New York Kosher Style Deli is your game—you absolutely, positively have to give Zinger’s Delicatessen in Boca Raton a try.

For you fressers out there…Zinger’s in a “former” life, was Pastrami Queen (see 9/12/08 writeup)…to make a long story short, family “matters” resulted in Pastrami Queen closing in late 2010. This past Tuesday, Zinger’s opened for business—for our purposes, SAME OWNER!–NEW “NYC” DECOR!–SAME TERRIFIC FOOD!

Last night I ate dinner at Zinger’s.

Zinger’s is located in the exact-spot where Pastrami Queen was. Gary Zinger who owned Pastrami Queen is Zinger’s owner. The restaurant’s layout hasn’t changed, but the decor has…let’s just say, that stainless steel walls/ceiling and art-deco signage rival the best-deli decor here and in NYC. The joint has 3-flat screen tvs and a takeout counter that will make you want to quit Weight Watchers.

Let’s talk food…

To be perfectly honest with you, I seriously doubt that there is a better New York Kosher Style Deli down here in South Florida. I’ll even go so-far as to say, Zinger’s Delicatessen can easily hold its own with legendary players like NYC’s- Carneige, Stage, 2nd Avenue and Katz’s delis…if you aren’t a native Nooo Yoorker, please feel free to insert your hometown favorite delis’ names.

Just so you know, I was a Pastrami Queen “regular”…so, it was absolutely impossible to eat-at Zinger’s, shall we say incognito. The meal was “on the arm” with Gary Zinger literally having me “try” everything in the joint. Take it for what it’s worth, the pastrami, corned beef, brisket, turkey off the bone are as good as it gets. The joint also makes- delicious, potato pancakes-chopped liver-tuna salad-chicken salad-matzoh ball soup-smashed French fries-Italian beef sub.

Just so we are straight…don’t want you to think that I’m a Zinger’s shill—I’ve eaten better potato knishes—like the ones I, my father and brother Andy use to get in 1958 from the pushcart stationed right outside of Fortunoff on Livonia Avenue in Brooklyn while waiting for my mother to finish shopping.

Trust me on this…Zinger’s is a homerun.

Like I said before, I tried a load of stuff. I will tell you, that the sandwiches being delivered to the tables were nice-sized… I didn’t see one group leave without a doggy bag… and no one bitched to Gary about the service/prices.

Zinger’s website is www.zingersdelicom. The site is currently under construction, so give it some-time to get up and running.

Zinger’s does breakfast, lunch and dinner…The joint is open 7 days a week 7am-10pm.

Walter Becker, Guitarist, Songwriter and Co-Founder of Steely Dan, Dies at 67

Posted on September 3rd, 2017 · Music/Events/Other · No Comments »

* Walter Becker, Guitarist, Songwriter and Co-Founder of Steely Dan, Dies at 67.

Jeff Eats’ bet here- is that most of you guys never had the honor nor privilege of seeing Steely Dan perform live!

As I’ve written countless times, you’re not getting any younger nor are the “greats”” of Rock n Roll!

Please! Go see these “acts” on their Florida tours!

______

from washingtonpost.com
Walter Becker, the co-founder of the 1970s supergroup Steely Dan, which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, died Sept. 3. He was 67.

His official website announced his death but provided no further details.

Mr. Becker had missed performances earlier in the summer in Los Angeles and New York.

Mr. Becker, a guitarist and bassist, met fellow musician Donald Fagen while they were students at New York’s Bard College in the late 1960s. They later moved to California and worked as songwriters and backup musicians before launching Steely Dan in 1972. (The band’s name derived from a sex toy mentioned in William S. Burroughs’s “Naked Lunch.”)

The group’s first release was the 1972 album “Can’t Buy a Thrill,” which included the hit songs “Reelin’ in the Years,” “Dirty Work” and “Do It Again.” Steely Dan often included a rotating cast of musicians, but Mr. Becker and Fagen were always the core figures and songwriters. Fagen was the lead vocalist.

The Steely Dan sound featured an original, sophisticated style of music that borrowed elements from rock, jazz, pop and soul.

“We play rock ’n’ roll, but we swing when we play,” Mr. Becker told Rolling Stone magazine in 1974. “We want that ongoing flow, that lightness, that forward rush of jazz.”

Later albums included “Countdown to Ecstasy” (1973), “Pretzel Logic” (1974), which featured the band’s biggest hit, “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number,” and “Katy Lied” (1975).

With a group of skilled studio musicians, including drummer Jim Keltner and jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Steely Dan released “Aja” (1977), which sold more than 5 million copies. The album, which contained the hits “Deacon Blues,” “Peg” and the title track, was named one of the 500 greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone.

Steely Dan became one of the top touring groups of the late 1970s, but Fagen and Mr. Becker broke up after the release of the 1980 album “Gaucho.”

They reunited in 2000 to record “Two Against Nature,” which won four Grammys, including Album of the Year. The group recorded one more studio album, “Everything Must Go,” in 2003.

In 2001, Steely Dan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and its music was cited for intellectual sophistication.

Mr. Becker was living on the Hawaiian island of Maui at the time of his death. Fagen said in a statement that he intends to continue to perform Steely Dan’s music with other musicians.

This hole in the wall, order at/pickup at the counter takeout pizza joint- makes an absolutely delicious thin crisp sweet sauce NY slice! The joint’s subs, salads and entrees are also real good.

***** Dean Anthony’s Express, 1449 Ysmato Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33432, (561) 988-2202.

There’s an old Chinese or maybe it’s an old Japanese-saying…”out of sight out of mind.”

Anyway,

Way back on August 26, 2009- Jeff Eats told you guys about Dean Anthony’s Express-a terrific red sauce Italian “takeout” joint that had just opened in Boca Raton. Long story short, ultra-crappy strip center location -literally made Jeff Eats forget all about the joint (which just happens to be 6 minutes from my home)…that is, until this past Monday when Mrs. Jeff Eats got a Dean Anthony’s Express flyer “advertising” all kinds of- specials in the mail…the result-the ordered 18″ $9.99 cheese pizza, chicken parmigiana sub/philly cheese steak sub/meatball parmigiana sub/sausage-peppers-onion sub ($6.50 each) put Dean Anthony’s Express back on the Eats’ radar.

Real simple…the food was absolute dynamite.

Dean Anthony’s Express is open Monday-Saturday 11am-8:30pm, closed on Sunday.

The original 8/26/2009 “review” is reprinted below.
*****
Dean Anthony’s Express
August 26, 2009

The folks in Boca Raton just-lucked out…let me explain.

Dean Anthony’s is a “mom & pop” red sauce Italian joint which currently has 1 full- restaurant in Wellington and 1 full-restaurant in Boynton Beach. Two days ago…in a real-small Boca Raton strip center a Dean Anthony’s Express opened… which if you forget about a few window-counter seats, is a takeout-only joint.

Over the years, I must have eaten in the Dean Anthony’s restaurants at least 10 times…I rank these joints right up there with the “best” in the mom & pop South Florida Italian category. By the way, before the Jeff Eats’ website crashed a few years ago, there was a very favorable review on the full-restaurants. On my to do list, is a revisit for an updated “opinion”…

Last night, I tried Dean Anthony’s Express…the menu is loaded with appetizers, salads, pastas, sandwiches, chicken wings (something like 12 different sauces), entrees, pizzas… I did a plain pizza, penne alla vodka, chicken parmigiana, greek salad, garlic rolls, cheese calzone, chicken wings (honey garlic), meatballs-spaghetti…everything I “sampled” was real-good. Gourmet food? Now, let’s not play dopey here! This is a takeout red- sauce -joint, but I am telling you, that give or take a handful of restaurants, this Dean Anthony’s Express is as good as neighborhood takeout gets. One thing that I gotta single out here for special treatment, the pizza…plain old slice with sauce/cheese—one of the best slices I have had down here in South Florida…let’s call it a real NY slice.

As for prices…strictly neighborhood prices. 10 wings $7.99–Greek salad (enough for 2) $9.99–a large pizza goes for $13.99. You definitely won’t go broke ordering from this joint.

You folks in Boca Raton really lucked out…I am telling you, that the next time you want takeout, you want to give Dean Anthony’s a try.

The joint is open Monday-Sarurday 11am-9pm and Sunday 3pm-9pm.
