One of Jeff Eats’ favorite menu items…

DUBBLE BUBBLE BUBBLE GUM

Gonna let you in on something that very few people know, for the past 25 years or so- Jeff Eats has been a “closet” bubble gum chewer! I literally- chew the stuff all day long at home! My favorite brand is Dubble Bubble Bubble Gum but just between us- I wouldn’t kick Bazooka Bubble Gum out of bed!

Based on price, my favorite “source” for Dubble Bubble Bubble Gum is OldTymeCandy.com -that said, there are a gazillion retailers who carry the brand! For example, Target gets $2.09 for the 1lb bag pictured down below!

As to why Jeff Eats loves bubble gum- let me refer you to psychiatrist Ronald Furman, MD – who can provide you with a list of “reasons” for the habit…

***** Hong Kong City BBQ, 5301 North State Road 7, Tamarac, Florida 33319, (954) 777-3832.

Got a real-good Chinese joint for you…Hong Kong City BBQ in Tamarac.

The beautiful thing about Hong Kong City BBQ is that nobody in your car is gonna bitch about going there. The reason Jeff Eats says that, the joint has dim sum, Brooklyn-Jewish-American Chinese food circa 1957 and authentic Chinese food (whatever that is?).

Anyway,

A party of 6-of us recently gave Hong Kong City BBQ a shot and I gotta tell you, the food was right on the money.

Let me give you a fast run down of what was ordered…
House Wonton Soup.
Egg Drop Soup.
Chicken Corn Soup.
Pan Fried Pot Stickers.
BBQ Roasted Honey Roasted Spareribs.
BBQ Roasted 1/2 Duck.
Shrimp Pan Fried Noodles.
Roast Pork Fried Rice.
Peking Pork Chops.
Sweet & Sour Pork.
Steam Whole Tilapia.
Lobster Cantonese.

Now, nothing for nothing–not one person in our party “didn’t find what to eat” and everyone agreed that the food was really good. The prices are “neighborhood” Chinese joint prices, the décor is neighborhood Chinese joint décor. Playing to its name–Hong King City BBQ (with the emphasis on BBQ) the joint has some bbq chickens/ducks/pigs hanging over the front counter–which gives the joint a nice New York City Chinatown Dump feel.

You guys know that Jeff Eats really isn’t into doing “pecking orders”…that said, the House Wonton Soup, BBQ Honey Roasted Spareribs, Peking Pork Chops and Sweet & Sour Pork were at the top of my list. Like I said before, everything was really good, but the stuff I just mentioned–was really-really good.

I’m just guessing here, but I’m thinking that some of you guys may want to know: Does Hong Kong City BBQ have any “Early Bird” deals? Yes “Virginia”-from 3pm-7pm- 7 days a week Hong Kong City BBQ has an Early Bird which gets you–soup/egg roll/white or fried rice/entrée.

Let me wrap this one up,

Jeff Eats really enjoyed Hong Kong City BBQ. Give this joint a shot- I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

You can check menu/other stuff at www.hkcitybbq.com.

Hong Kong City BBQ is open Monday-Friday 11am-11pm, Saturday-Sunday 10:30am-11pm.

Maureen Langan the national touring headliner comedian is set to play the Boca Black Box in Boca Raton on Saturday, January 6th (8pm) and Sunday January (2pm)- and I am telling you that this lady’s act is not to be missed!

Simply put, Maureen Langan is one of the funniest female comedians currently working America’s comedy club casino/convention/resort/event circuit!

Like I just said, you don’t want to miss this lady’s act!

The Skinny…

Maureen Langan: Daughter of a Garbageman

Saturday, January 6th, 2018 (8pm) & Sunday, January 7th, 2018 (2pm)

8221 Glades Road, Boca Raton, FL 33434
Box Office: (561) 483-9036

Tickets: bocablackbox.com goldstar.com (discount tickets)

Langan’s one-woman show is a funny and moving tale of the journalist turned comic’s 1970s upbringing in New Jersey.

Raised by an Irish immigrant mother and Bronx-born sanitation worker father, Maureen was told that an education was the road to success.

But is that true? How do you tell your daughter to read and write when sex tapes lead to book deals? When “The Apprentice” becomes the president? Who is to blame? Our mothers? Our fathers? America?

In DAUGHTER OF A GARBAGEMAN, Maureen hysterically lambasts our “Kardashian culture” while sharing her parents deep struggles, strengths, and secrets and how that made her who she is today.

DAUGHTER OF A GARBAGEMAN has played to rave reviews in San Francisco, Berkeley, Nantucket, and Edinburgh, Scotland.

“The most emotionally moving show I have seen this Season … genuine laugh-out-loud hilarity.” —Daily Business, UK

“Maureen has something to say about family relationships, self- acceptance and American culture and is willing to be completely honest without sacrificing her killer sense of humor.”
-The San Francisco Examiner

Maureen Langan hosts a weekly talk show on KGO Radio in San Francisco. She is an award-winning broadcast journalist for PBS and Bloomberg TV & Radio. As a standup, Maureen has performed around the country and world, featuring at festivals from South Africa to Canada. A recent e-mail from reader, JKI…

Jeff Eats,
My wife and I recently (5/13/17) moved to West Palm Beach from Akron, Ohio where we were both born and lived for over 68 years.
Came across your site yesterday and I wanted to tell you about the Okeechobee Steak House in West Palm Beach. We ate there last night and the food and service were great and the prices beyond reasonable.
When you get a chance check this restaurant out, because it’s terrific.
Thank you,
JKI
_________

JKI,

Welcome to South Florida.
Thanks for the heads-up!
Thanks for “reading”…

The Okeechobee Steak House has been around for something like 68 years. Low key joint, that serves up top notch steaks/seafood at reasonable prices with no drama!-(or is it dramaless?)…

Anyway,

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, with all of the great steaks/seafood- many people over-look the joint’s Prime Steak Burger- which is off the chart delicious.

***** Okeechobee Steak House, 2854 Okeechobee Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida 33409, (561) 683-5151.

The Okeechobee Steak House has been in business since 1947. The joint is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

The Okeechobee Steak House is not a fancy schmancy upscale steakhouse. That said, the food is terrific and the menu is priced right. For around 35-40 bucks a head, you get salad, entree and side dishes. A similar meal at a fancy schmancy joint- which is maybe a 1/2 a notch higher in quality and service would run you $55-60.

The Okeechobee Steak House serves top quality steaks and seafood. Like I said a few seconds ago, it isn’t a fancy schmancy joint with tee shirts/shorts being pretty common there. What makes this a “beautiful” place is that it doesn’t take itself seriously like “upscale” joints do. The game here is good food and good service in a real-easy atmosphere.

Look…you don’t stay in business for 61 years without doing something right. Try this joint, you will really enjoy the food.

Every so often, you gotta go for the cash- and eat at an upscale-pricey joint! Just make sure that the food and service are dynamite!

By the way, if the steak doesn’t work for you- maybe the $48 16oz Double Rib Veal Chop or the $14 Oysters Rockefeller will!

***** New York Prime, 2350 Executive Center Drive, Boca Raton, Florida 33431, (561) 998-3881.

New York Prime is an “upscale steakhouse” located in Boca Raton.

This is a re-review…the original review July 23, 2008 was a “so-so” finding.

Over the years, I have eaten in this joint a number of times. My last outing was this past Saturday night with an 8:30 pm reservation. Let’s just say, that from the crowd, it appears that the “recession” didn’t hit New York Prime. Wall to wall people…with a 30-minute wait to “honor” that 8:30 pm reservation.

I have mixed “feelings” on New York Prime. The food is delicious and the service is as good as it gets…that said, there is something about this joint which doesn’t sit right with old Jeff Eats. Can’t exactly put my finger on it, but each and every-time I have eaten there, I find the joint surreal…the latest outing had me “defining” the feeling- as “New Jersey Houswives comes to Boca”—a lot of plastic surgery going on here…I’ll leave you guys to figure out what this all means…let’s just say that the crowd to say the least is eclectic.

Let’s talk food…Delicious—-chopped salad ($9.50–enough for 2 people), 22 oz. bone-in-ribeye steak ($39.50), garlic chicken ($23.50), petite New York strip steak ($34), large sauteed onions ($11), large southwestern creamed corn ($11), large hash brown potatoes ($12).

Let me sum up the experience…excellent food, excellent service, prices aren’t too terrible. Loud track/live keyborad music… with people singing along (and I do mean singing along at the top of their lungs to folks like Neil Diamond, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons and Dion & The Belmonts)—if you are looking for a quiet-intimate–or even a dinner where you can hear yourself talk, New York Prime at least on a Saturday night, isn’t the joint for you.)

Take a look at New York Prime’s website www.centraarchy.com for menu/prices. New York Prime is open 7 days a week 5pm-11pm.

Every once and awhile, a joint like New York Prime is a real good place for an upscale steak-seafood dinner. Like I said before, the food and service are top-notch and the prices not toooo bad. The “show” is also something to see.

New York Prime, 2350 NW Executive Center, Boca Raton, Florida 33431 (561) 998-3881.
This evening I ate dinner at New York Prime an upscale steakhouse…you know exactly what this kind of joint is all about…where a 22 oz. bone-in-ribeye goes for $42…where a baked potato goes for $7.50. Personally, if I closed my eyes and just ate, I couldn’t tell you if I was in New York Prime, Abe & Louie’s, Chops, Morton’s, Ruth’s Chris… as they all play the same tune, give or take a different “note” here and there. As for tonight’s food, it was okay, nothing great…the steak was very fatty…the hash browns bland, your neighborhood bagel-deli makes better ones and doesn’t charge $11…the onion rings and sauteed onions sides were good, but pricey at $8 and $11 respectively.

For information about menu/prices/hours… check this joint’s website at www.centraarchy.com.

Just for fun…Do a bit of homework here…look at the menu prices and figure out what “your” theoretical meal would cost. I think your calculator will show, that unless you eat like a bird… a no alcohol-no appetizer-no dessert meal is going to run you something like 60-85 bucks a head.

Last night, my party of 4 dropped $300+…everyone agreed that the food was just fair and was way overpriced. For that kind of money, you would expect at least one “Boy! that sure was delicious” comment…don’t you think?

I know people who swear by this joint…Personally, I think it’s “a- big- to-do-over-nothing.” The same goes for most of the upscale steak joints in South Florida, with one exception that being the Strip House (see review 5/9/08) in Palm Beach Gardens which doesn’t take itself all that seriously.
