Got this e-mail this morning…

Jeff,
It was a pleasure meeting you and your wife at Friday night’s Morris Day & The Time concert in Pompano Beach. Terrific show.
As I mentioned, my wife and I in late April retired to Deerfield Beach after living our 41 years of married life in Plainview, Long Island. We are just getting organized and as I told you we literally stumbled across your jeffeats.com site while looking for restaurants to eat in. Your taste in both food and entertainment match up pretty close with ours.
You have tons of picks and I was wondering if you could give us a great ‘mom & pop’ Italian joint in the Deerfield Beach area. As you may recall we are living around the Powerline/Sample Road area and we’re looking for that one pizza tee shorts/tee shirt joint to really count on.
Once again, great meeting you.

Glad that you enjoyed Morris Day and the Time. It was a great show.

It was nice meeting you and your wife.

Real simple answer to your “request”…just by coincidence, last night- Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats ate dinner at Nino’s Pizzeria in Boca Raton- and I gotta tell you, that this joint for the past 23 years has been one of our go-to-“mom & pops”…never and I repeat-never- a bad meal. Just between you and me, Nino’s makes a veal chop parmigiana and chicken cacciatore/chicken scarpariello both on the bone- that are off the chart. As for New York Style Pizza, the joint’s pies and slices are top-shelf!

Printed down below is a “review” that Jeff Eats did back on 5/19/14…try Nino’s- the bet here, you and your wife will absolutely love it!

Thanks for reading..

Way back on March 20, 2008 Jeff Eats told you guys about Nino’s Pizzeria & Restaurant in Boca Raton.

Time for a little update on what is definitely one of the best “mom & pop” red sauce Italian joints in South Florida.

For your convenience the “original” story is printed below…gonna save you the trouble of scrolling around.

Anyway,

Just for background, Nino’s opened for business in Boca Raton in 1983-you mathematicians can do the math–for the rest of you-that’s 31 years ago. In something like 2005, it opened a second location in Delray Beach. Partners fall-out, one gets Boca Raton, the other gets Delray Beach. So now you know, the business angle here.

Now-just so we are straight, we are talking about Boca Raton- here. Absolutely-positively nothing wrong with the Delray Beach location–Jeff Eats (1) lives closer to the Boca joint and (2) Jeff Eats thinks that the food, service, ambiance are better in Boca Raton- but trust me Delray Beach ain’t exactly chopped liver either.

Anyway,

Jeff Eats has never “officially” counted the number of times-I’ve eaten in/taken out from Nino’s–but I’m guessing 70 maybe 80, let’s just say it’s a lot. I want to tell you, that not- even- one- time was the food not right on the money–same for the service. Real simple… its soups, salads, pizzas, calzones, subs, pastas, entrees are all delicious. Off the top of my head, I would match Nino’s veal chop parmigiana ($22 soup/salad, pasta side, garlic rolls), its chicken cacciatore on the bone ($17.95 soup/salad, pasta side, garlic rolls), its chicken scarpariello on the bone ($17.95 soup/salad, pasta side, garlic rolls) and its shrimp scampi ($22.50 soup/salad, pasta side, garlic rolls) up against South Florida’s best “mom & pop” and “upscale” players. While I’m on the subject of food, Nino’s plain pizza is always on the money and the joint makes what it calls an “upside down Sicilian” pie that is a work of beauty–if you go, get it!

You maybe wondering why the sudden “gushing” about Nino’s?

Last night, Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and some dear friends- ate dinner at Nino’s and we got to discussing “various” Italian joints–and like a bolt of lightening–it hit me as to how really good Nino’s stuff is! Just that simple! Real fast-right off the top of you head, other than Nino’s–name a “mom & pop” red sauce Italian joint that does chicken cacciatore and chicken scarpariello on the bone…you do know, that’s the only RIGHT WAY to make those dishes–but that’s just my take-on the-thing!

You can check menu/prices at www.ninosofboca.com.

Nino’s Pizzeria & Restaurant is open 7 days a week 11am-10pm.

Nino’s is one of my favorite “mom and pop” Southern Italian joints in South Florida. I could be going out on a limb here, but I think that after you have tried this joint, you will also become a big fan.

Just so you know, the Boca Raton location has been around for something like 25 years…the Delray Beach location has been in business for about 3 years. Over the years, I have eaten in the Boca location something like 30 times and the Delray location twice…although the menus are almost identical, I like the food, ambiance and service in the Boca restaurant better…call me a creature of habit, but I really feel at home when I enter the Boca joint…from the way I am greeted at the front door, to Nino the owner waving and talking from behind the pizza counter to the customers…the food and service in Delray Beach is just fine, but there is something “special” about the Boca location.

Although Nino’s seemingly “follows” the standard pattern…Soup or salad, garlic rolls, entree with a pasta side…this joint makes some of the most delicious dishes and pizza that you have ever eaten. I would personally match its veal chop parmigiana—bone in chicken cacciatore— bone in chicken scapriello—shrimp scampi entrees against any Italian restaurant down here in South Florida.

Like I said before, Nino’s has been around for something like 25 years. The Boca Raton joint is jammed for dinner 7-days a week and has a takeout business that seems to be never ending. The Delray Beach spot has also developed quite a following…but my heart belongs to the Boca joint. Both joints are open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

Great food. Great service. Pizza joint prices…

By the way, Nino and his wife Josephine own Josephine’s Italian Restaurant which is located on Federal Highway in Boca Raton. That’s a story for another day…but Josephine’s is a very good “white table cloth” joint.

Cinco de Mayo & Hellmann’s Mayonaise

* Cinco de Mayo & Hellmann’s Mayonaise.

A brief history lesson…

Most people don’t know that back in 1912,
Hellmann’s Mayonnaise was manufactured in England.
In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in VeraCruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.
This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico.
But as we all know, the great ship did not make it to New York.
The ship hit an iceberg and sank. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning.
The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

***** Ben’s of Boca Raton, 9942 Clint Moore Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33496–(561) 470-9963.

Ben’s is a KOSHER DELI. This joint opened about 2 years ago and every time that I have been there, there have been lines waiting to dine in and take-out. You native New Yorker’s probably know, that this is the same Ben’s which currently has 6 Long Island locations and 1 Manhattan spot.

DELI is a very funny thing…some people like fatty corned beef and some have to have it extra lean… The point to be made, is that you will have to try Ben’s and decide for yourself as to whether or not you like-love-hate this joint’s food.

Last night I had a great Rumanian Steak smothered in sauteed onions, a piece of stuff derma and a potato pancake. The derma’s gravy was a bit salty, but everything else that I ordered was delicious. I also “sampled” a hot-dog with mustard and sauerkrat, corned beef, brisket, turkey off the bone, pastrami and tongue…all absolutely perfect.

Ben’s is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. Like I said before, “deli” is a personal call, so try this joint and decide for yourself if it’s for you. Personally, I love the joint and try to get there once or twice a month.

Simple story…yesterday afternoon, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “found” Subpreme Grill and I gotta tell you- that based on the delicious subs that we fressed- in order to be closer to Subpreme Grill, we are thinking of moving from Boca Raton to Homestead (I also-got a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you!)- that said, trust me when I tell you that, Subpreme Grill makes off the chart delicious hot & cold subs, order-pickup at counter, handful- of tables/counter seating, open 7 days a week from 8am-9pm.

Now, we all know that this Jeff Eats’ “gig” is just one big subjective call- what I like, you may hate and vice versa. That said, I kinda think I know my “subs” and I’m telling you guys, this Subpreme Grill joint’s stuff absolutely killed!

Let me wrap-up Subpreme Grill by saying, if this joint was even remotely close to our Boca Raton abode, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats would definitely be big time steady customers!

South Florida-based TooJay’s files for bankruptcy
TooJay’s operates 16 locations in Broward, Palm Beach counties

By: Peter Burke
Posted at 6:20 PM, Apr 29, 2020 and last updated 6:26 PM, Apr 29, 2020
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A popular South Florida-based deli has filed for bankruptcy.

TooJay’s, which operates 16 locations in Broward and Palm Beach counties, on Wednesday announced the decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a statement from president and CEO Maxwell Piet.

Piet called the decision “the best path forward” for TooJay’s. He went on to say it is “the direct result of the devastating economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our restaurants throughout Florida.”

“This course of action will enable us to remain open to serve our communities with the same great food and service we are known for,” the statement said. “As we learn of the reopening plans for our dining rooms, we will rehire more employees and expand our services as restrictions allow.”

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a tiered reopening plan for the state Wednesday, but it excludes South Florida.

South Florida is the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, with more than 17,000 confirmed cases and hundreds of death.

TooJay’s opened in 1981 with a single location in Palm Beach. Other locations in Palm Beach County include Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter.

A recent e-mail received by Jeff Eats.

Hey Jeff,

My husband and I recently moved to Boca from Philadelphia.

We have eaten in the Too Jays located by Boca Town Center several times and love its food.

I recently came across your Too Jays’ April 28, 2009 review and couldn’t disagree more.

Just curious, have you changed your opinion during the past 6 years?

Anna G

________

Anna G:

The answer to your question is NOPE!

Jeff Eats has eaten in TooJay’s a number of times since that April 28, 2009 “story” first appeared- and I haven’t changed my opinion one iota!

Just so you know, “food reviewing” is nothing but a big game- what I like, you may hate and vice versa. Trust me, there is no right or wrong in this game.

If you like TooJay’s, I got no problem. That said, may I humbly suggest that you try “some” of the other New York Kosher Style Delis/Kosher Delis “mentioned” by Jeff Eats and see if just- maybe I’m onto something- when I tell you that TooJay’s food is nothing great, but nothing too terrible either!

Jeff Eats’ April 28, 2009 “story” is printed- down below…

***** TooJay’s Original Gourmet Deli, 3013 Yamato Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33496, (561) 997-9911.

TooJay’s is a “New York Style” deli…which has 27 locations in Florida. If you check its website www.toojays.com in addition to menu/prices you will find a listing of locations.

Just so we are straight…TooJay’s is not a top-notch deli in the same vein as joints like Pastrami Queen, Ben’s Kosher Deli or Pomperdale Deli. Simply put, TooJay’s serves decent enough food at very reasonable prices. Nothing great, but nothing terrible.

Over the past 16 years, I must have eaten in/taken-out from a TooJay’s something like 25-30 times…let’s just say, that convenience more than anything else was the “reason why”…as there are 3- locations all within 5 minutes of my home.

Let’s sum this one up…NY style deli, loads of appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, meat/chicken/fish entrees and desserts…decent food…reasonable prices. When I “think” TooJay’s I think white bread…not rye bread.

TooJay’s is open 7 days a week for breakfast-lunch-dinner.
