Chuck E. Cheese parent company files for bankruptcy, another casualty of pandemic

Restaurant chain Chuck E. Cheese parent CEC Entertainment filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Thursday, making it the latest casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic that has crushed entertainment and leisure industries globally.

The company described the current crisis as the “most challenging” in its history and said it would use the bankruptcy proceedings to continue talks with stakeholders and landlords, as well as restructure its balance sheet.

CEC listed both assets and liabilities in the range of $1 billion to $10 billion, according to the bankruptcy filing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.

U.S. and international franchise partners as well as corporate entities outside the United States are not part of the process, it said.

Chuck E. Cheese and Peter Piper Pizza locations will continue to re-open as per government guidelines, CEC added.

As of Wednesday, 266 Chuck E. Cheese and Peter Piper Pizza restaurant and arcade venues were re-opened, with the company expecting to maintain ongoing operations in the locations throughout the Chapter 11 process.

Irving, Texas-based CEC was taken private by Apollo Global Management in 2014 in a $1.3 billion deal, including debt.

It has since sought to broaden its appeal beyond children and teenagers, expanding its alcohol offerings for adults.

Last year, the company terminated its earlier decision to merge with Leo Holdings, a blank check company.

As of March, CEC and its franchisees operated 612 Chuck E. Cheese and 122 Peter Piper Pizza venues, with locations in 47 U.S. states and 16 foreign countries.

PJT Partners is serving as a financial adviser, while FTI Consulting is its restructuring adviser, it said.

Got an absolutely amazing donut-joint for you…Jupiter Donut Factory in Jupiter.

I guarantee- that after eating this joint’s- glazed, bacon maple walnut, sour dough, chocolate glazed donuts you’ll want to enroll in Jupiter’s Police Academy. Being a drop too old to start a new career, Jeff Eats in homage to Jupiter Donut Factory- will henceforth be known as Jeff Eats Andy Sipowitz or JEAS, for short!

No fooling around, Jupiter Donut Factory makes some of the most delicious donuts that I have ever eaten. For sure, this “mom & pop” joint-has bagels, breakfast sandwiches, coffee, smoothies but the game here is DONUTS.

Not to editorialize or nothing, but…once you have had Jupiter’s donuts, you’ll have a very serious problem eating the stuff that Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme serve-up.

Let me start by saying that Jeff Eats LOVES-The Dandee Donut Factory-in Pompano Beach.

For the record, Jeff Eats originally told you guys about Dandee on 11/19/11-but some stories warrant “re-telling”…

Just so we are straight, there are two other Dandee Donut outposts in South Florida-Deerfield Beach and Hollywood…Pompano Beach and Hollywood are owned by the same guy, while the Deerfield Beach store has a totally different-unrelated owner.

For the purposes of today’s story…I’m only talking about the Pompano Beach joint…which is open 24/7-which has indoor table/counter–outdoor patio seating…which makes amazing donuts and serves-up delicious “diner” food. If you are wondering why Jeff Eats is “featuring” Pompano Beach–it’s because this is the joint that Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have been frequenting -to the tune of something like twice a month for years. While I’m busy telling you my life story- Hollywood’s donuts/food are as good as Pompano’s…Deerfield Beach’s donuts are OK-but not great (Remember! I told you -this joint has a different owner not to mention a different baker)-but its diner food is decent enough.

We rolled into Dandees about 1:00 AM at the end of August. Despite Pompano Beach being almost completely shuttered, Dandees was bustling. The donuts are far superior to Dunkin and the atmosphere was worth the trip. I believe my son met his future ex wife there

Absolutely love this mom & pop diner…

The Over Easy Cafe–“mom & pop” diner located in Oakland Park.

Let me start by saying, that everyone has an Over Easy Cafe…

It maybe called- George’s in Brooklyn, Tom Sawyer’s in Boca, Good Egg in Tucson, or Cozy Corner in Chicago—that small, neighborhood, formica table/booth joint (the grill is right behind the counter seating) that you go to—for breakfast/lunch. Absolutely impossible to get a count, but I’ll betcha that there are literally thousands of these mom & pop owned/operated restaurants in America.

You know the drill…menus- loaded with breakfast stuff, sandwiches, salads, burgers, dinner specials, desserts. Nothing gourmet (whatever gourmet means) seemingly happens at the -Over Easy Cafes of the world—Just decent food, pleasant waitresses, loads of coffee, endless conversation.

Like most of you, I absolutely love these kind of joints.

For the record, I have eaten 3 breakfasts and 1 lunch at the Over Easy Cafe. Can’t recall ever having had- a bad western, pancake, cheeseburger, chicken salad on toasted rye. You can check menu/prices at www.theovereasy.com.

The Over Easy Cafe is open Monday-Friday 6am-3pm, Saturday 6am-1pm, Sunday 7am-1pm.

One final item for you…The Over Easy Cafe makes some of the best home-made pies that this Brooklyn boy has ever tasted. Try the dutch-apple and I’ll betcha a buck, that the next time you’re in Costco- you’ll think twice about bringing home that 20 pounder (well it feels like it’s 20 lbs) that they have in the baked goods area.

Got a real good pizza joint for you guys to checkout- Pizza District in Boca Raton.

The Skinny- the joint opened about 3 months ago, table/hi-top/counter seating, menu of reasonably priced- pizzas/salads/calzones/wings/subs/garlic rolls/beers/wines, open Monday-Thursday 11am–10pm/ Friday–Saturday 11am-11pm/ Sunday noon–10pm.

Last night, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats gave Pizza District a shot and I gotta tell you that the joint killed it! Absolutely delicious thin crust pepperoni pizza/ garlic rolls/ chicken parm sub/ Greek salad!

Let me wrap this tale up by telling you guys- that Pizza District’s delicious food/ pleasant service/ reasonable prices/ cool looking “steel” decor/ easy going vibe- spell winner in Jeff Eats’ book!
