***** PDQ, 2341 North Federal Highway, Pompano Beach, Florida 33062, (954) 785-6285.

Real simple story to tell…

PDQ’s chicken tenders are absolute dynamite! They come either “crispy” or “grilled.”- 25 tenders run $31.80 and 50 go for $57.50.

Just wanted you guys to know, that on New Year’s Day 2016- Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats are having a whole bunch of people over to our house…

We just placed an order for 100 crispy- and 100 grilled tenders with PDQ’s Pompano Beach joint – we also got other stuff ordered… For the “math challenged” 2 x $57.50= $115.

When Jeff Eats sees a good deal, I like to tell you guys about it!

PDQ has 23 joints in Florida. You can check locations/menu/prices/info at eatpdq.com.

***** PDQ (People Dedicated to Quality), 2015 Okeechobee Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida 33409, (561) 594-1906.

On April 30, 2013 Jeff Eats told you guys about PDQ a “new” fast-food/casual chicken chain–that is scheduled to open its West Palm Beach location on Sunday, May 5, 2013. The April 30, 2013 writeup is reprinted “after” today’s “thoughts.”

For the record, this afternoon Jeff Eats “ate” at a Family & Friends outing in the West Palm Beach store and I gotta tell you, this joint is going to be an absolute homerun.

Before I tell you about my “meal”—for what it’s worth, I don’t really care for the name PDQ. To me, the letters P D Q really don’t convey what this joint is all about. Nothing for nothing, but the owners of this business have created a fast food/casual hybrid…think Panera Bread and you may appreciate where I’m going with this. What they “got” is an order at/pick up at the counter fast food restaurant that looks like an upscale sports bar. I loved the look of the joint (and yes, it’s got a load of large flat screen TVs) but if you do some checking, many people use the term PDQ to mean “fast” or “right away”…that said, I think the last thing that PDQ wants is for you to think of its food as being “fast food” The store is logoed with big letters that say, “People Dedicated to Quality”–so Jeff Eats sees where the PDQ comes from (actually if we wanted to get technical here it should be PDTQ)…personally, I wouldn’t have used PDQ because to a great number of people PDQ means “other” things. Jeff Eats’ personal favorites -Pretty Damned Quick and Pennies Dimes Quarters.

Now that Jeff Eats has pontificated on the PDQ name…let’s talk food.

First let me start by saying, this 4,200 square foot free standing building is absolutely great looking…it has a drive thru and looks like something right out of the Florida Keys. There is also a huge open kitchen and you can see everything being prepared. In talking with the its founders (who by the way, created the Outback Steakhouse chain) everything is freshly made and the restaurant has no freezers. While there, Jeff Eats got a kick out of watching the staff squeeze 100s of lemons for the fresh-squeezed lemonade—For you wise-guys out there, yes! I got a kick out of watching, nothing sinister, lewd or whatever your devious minds maybe thinking!

Jeff Eats “tried” the tenders, hand cut fresh French fries, chicken Caesar salad, fried chicken sandwich, turkey breast sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich, chocolate shake, apple slices with toffee—and I’m telling you, every item and I do mean every item was delicious. For the record–the food was “on the house”…which made it “easy” to literally order almost every menu item. If I got one bitch, I thought that the fries had just a drop too much salt on them—trust me, that one little itsy bitsy “problem” is easy to cure. Just a quickie, if you take a look at Jeff Eats’ 1/19/2007 Outback Steakhouse “review” note the salt-complaint… Goes to show you, Jeff Eats and the guys running this joint are consistent, if they are anything.

Check www.eatpdq.com for menu/prices/locations/pictures.

In talking to management, there are currently 4 Tampa, 2 North Carolina, 1 Oakland Park, 1 West Palm Peach PDQs…and “for” our purposes-2013-2014 planned locations-Wellington, Boca Raton and Pompano Beach.

Let me wrap this one up this way…

Based on what I saw, ate and heard PDQ is going to develop into a major national chain. The guys behind this deal know exactly what to do and how to do it…that is if they–

Just lose the salt shaker…

*****
April 30, 2013
PDQ’s menu features lightly fried chicken tenders/sandwiches, grilled chicken and turkey breast sandwiches, salads, French fries and shakes.

Just a quick heads-up…Jeff Eats is “hearing” tremendous things about a brand new-fast food chicken chain PDQ which currently has 4 Tampa/1 Oakland Park/1 West Palm Beach/2 North Carolina locations.

Haven’t tried the joint out yet, but some buddies of mine-told Jeff Eats that PDQ (Oakland Park) makes amazingly delicious grilled chicken/fried chicken tenders/turkey/salads/fries/shakes. One caveat, three of those buddies way back when- thought that the Edsel was going to be a homerun and the fourth guy to this very day-claims that aliens abducted him in 1989.

As I mentioned 4 seconds ago, there is one location in Oakland Park…this coming Sunday-May 5th, PDQ is opening a second South Florida location in West Palm Beach.

Check www.www.eatpdq.com for menu/locations.

For what it’s worth–the chain is owned by one of the guys who created the Outback Steakhouse chain. Nothing for nothing, a few quick conversations with a handful of fast food/casual restaurant developers–had them figuring that PDQ had a real shot to develop into a major chain. The consensus was, that PDQ may appeal to a huge segment of Chik-fil-A’s customer base that is looking for a more diversified menu. Throw in 4,500 square foot stores/with drive thrus that are open on Sunday—and just maybe, PDQ has the formula to be a homerun-chain.

Got a real good pizza joint for you guys to checkout- Pete’s Pizza in Daytona Beach.

Real simple tale to tell…

Yesterday, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats were up in Daytona Beach and around 2:25pm- we were craving- some pizza and some guy named Alphonse or maybe it was Mohammed (sorry, I don’t really recall) working behind the counter in a Chevron Gas Station Mini-Mart recommended that we try Pete’s Pizza, a hole in the wall “mom & pop” red sauce Italian joint where you order at the counter/pickup at the counter, handful of tables, pizzas/ calzones/salads/ wings/ pastas/ hot & cold subs/ entrees menu, open Monday-Saturday 11am-11pm/Sunday 1pm-10pm, menu/prices at petespizzadaytona.com.

Let Jeff Eats wrap Pete’s Pizza up for you guys by saying, Alphonse’s call (or maybe it was Mohammed’s call) was right on the money- with the New York Style Pizza (thin/crisp/sweet sauce/nice oil drip) and the Philly cheesesteak we threw in for good measure both being off the chart delicious!

For you guys who like a drop more “flesh”- on your Jeff Eats’ tales, sorry- no can do, just dynamite- pepperoni cheese pizza and Philly cheesesteak- before the drive home to Boca!

Anyway, last night Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “did” some pizza there and I gotta tell you- off the chain delicious!

Today’s story- what constitutes or doesn’t constitute a Real New York Slice is anyone’s guess- all I know- is that Eddie & Sam’s New York Pizza kills and that if you live, work, or play anywhere near this joint- you should give it a shot!

Posted in May 5, 2014

***** Eddie & Sam’s New York Pizza, 203 East Twiggs Street, Tampa, Florida 33602, (813) 229-8500.

Real simple concept…order at/pickup at the counter…pizzas, pastas, salads, heroes. The joint has both indoor and outdoor table seating.

You can check menu/prices at www.eddieandsamspizza.com.

Eddie & Sam’s “bubameiser” (some of you guys may have to use Google-here) is that its pizza is made with water imported from New York.

Anyway…

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats recently did dinner at Eddie & Sam’s and I gotta tell you, the joint makes a delicious thin crust/crispy/sweet sauce pizza. Just as important, Eddie & Sam’s- Chicken Roll (chicken parmigiana wrapped in pizza dough), Sausage Onion Green Pepper Roll (grilled onions, green peppers, sweet sausage, mozzarella cheese wrapped in pizza dough) and Caesar Salad were delicious.

Let me sum things up for you…Eddie & Sam’s food is real-good and “specials” like 2-slices/Coke for $5.99 are right on the money (pun intended).

Now that you know about a real good pizza joint in Tampa–let me turn my attention to this NYC water thing.

Long story short, there are countless people who “argue” that it’s NYC’s tap water that makes pizza in NYC so good…these same people also claim that NYC tap water is what makes NYC bagels so good…

Now…

Jeff Eats was born in Brooklyn in 1949. Jeff Eats lived in Brooklyn from 1949-1979 and in Manhattan from 1980-1991-and has literally eaten in 100s of pizza joints in Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island, Manhattan and I gotta tell you, that I can distinctly remember eating numerous slices–that were absolutely horrendous-lousy-crappy-terrible-inedible–so just maybe this NYC tap water story isn’t-all that it’s cracked-up to be. Now Jeff Eats could be wrong here–but perhaps- the quality of the dough/ sauce/ cheese/ oil/ ingredients/ type of oven used/ and who the pizza maker is–plays a huge role in how good that slice ends up.

Not looking to burst anybody’s Advertising Campaign or nothing–but this NYC tap water-thing has literally become part of America’s pop culture–sort of like Big Foot, you know–it may exist, but then again maybe not.

One quick observation, on its website Eddie & Sam’s says-that New York water is used–it doesn’t say NYC tap water is used. Capice! You can call me Ray and you can call me Ray Jay, but don’t call me Eagle Eye Jeff Eats!

To wrap things up…

Eddie & Sam’s New York Pizza is a winner–no matter what- water it uses!

The joint is open Sunday, Tuesday-Thursday 11am-10pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm, closed on Monday.

The $25 Gift Card is good at any of Miller’s 90 Ale House locations (millersalehouse.com for locations/menus/prices/info).

Posted on March 24th, 2016

***** Miller’s Ale House, 1200 Yamato Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33431, (561) 988-9142.

Jeff Eats is gonna take a shot here and “think” that you guys know what Miller’s Ale House is! If not- sports bar chain that currently has 51 joints in Florida, 1 in Georgia, 2 in Illinois, 1 in Maryland, 1 in Massachusetts, 2 in Nevada, 3 in New Jersey, 6 in New York, 1 in Ohio, 4 in Pennsylvania. You can check millersalehouse.com for locations/menu/prices/operating hours/info.

Way-back on July 12, 2008 Jeff Eats told you-about the Miller’s Ale House in Jupiter, Florida. In 2008 I described the joint’s food as being okay and perfectly priced! That tale is reprinted down-below.

If you guys can keep a secret, since that 7/12/2008 tale printed (until this past Monday) Jeff Eats hadn’t been back “to” a Miller’s Ale House. No particular reason, just hadn’t been back!

Long story short, this past Monday- Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats, Son Jeff Eats and Daughter Jeff Eats ate dinner at the Miller’s Ale House on Yamato Road in Boca Raton- and I gotta tell you, we had an absolutely great-time. Rather than bother you guys telling you -that this location has a separate bar area/booth/table seating, more flat screen tvs than you can count, a covered out door patio with its own bar, a menu loaded with appetizers- burgers- salads-wings- entrees- desserts- beers- booze…let me tell you that the fried calamari, chicken Caesar salad, chicken nachos, breaded boneless garlic wings, grilled teriyaki wings, bbq baby back ribs, bacon cheeseburger, onion rings, French fries that we ordered were all delicious.

Look! I don’t know about your family, but getting the members of Jeff Eats’ immediate family to agree on virtually anything- is a monumental task. With that in mind, last night-all four of us agreed that the food killed, that the prices were super reasonable and that the service was as competent/pleasant as could be!

As I mentioned a few seconds ago, Jeff Eats hadn’t been to a Miller’s Ale House in something like 7 1/2 years! All I can tell you guys- the joint was absolute dynamite! If the other 71 Miller’s are like the Yamato Road outpost- you now know about a sports bar “chain” that really has its act together- and is an absolute must try!

Miller’s Ale House is open Sunday 11am-midnight, Monday-Saturday 11am-2am.

***** Miller’s Jupiter Ale House, 126 Center Street, Jupiter, Florida 33458 (561) 746-7620

Miller’s owns and operates a “ton” and I do mean a “ton” of sports-bars/ale houses in South Florida. Check millersalehouse.com for locations/menu/prices/hours.

Miller’s joints all take on a local name…in Boca Raton, the joint is the Boca Ale House…in Jupiter the joint is the Jupiter Ale House…in Coral Springs the joint is the Coral Springs Ale House…so on and so forth.

Over the years, I have eaten in a number of Miller’s South Florida locations…my most recent meal being in the Jupiter Ale House 3 weeks ago. All of the Ale Houses look alike…big bar area, tvs galore, small game room, wood booths. The menus are the same…tons of appetizers, burgers, sandwiches and entrees…something for everybody. Just so you know, the food is okay- not great…(operative word) OKAY… The prices are cheap…that’s the game…like a 20 oz. bone-in porterhouse steak with french fries for something like 10 bucks.

I have to tell you, that every so often, I really enjoy a grizzly-steak covered in grilled onions and french fries drenched in ketchup that costs $9.99…Sort of reminds me of Tad’s Broiled Steaks (you- New Yorkers know what I am talking about) circa 1960.

The Ale Houses are open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. Like I said, okay food priced perfectly.

By the way…some of you may not know, but Tad’s Broiled Steaks currently has a location at 152 West 34th Street, New York, New York 10001 (212) 630-0318…those were the days.

***** Wei’s Long Gong Chinese, 11920 Southwest 8th Street, Miami, Florida 33184, (305) 553-4644.

Look!

Jeff Eats is a simple (left myself open there, didn’t I?) guy-who was born in Brooklyn in 1949. I was raised on “American” Chinese food…you know- wonton soup, bbq ribs, steamed dumplings, roast pork fried rice, egg rolls, sweet & sour pork, General Tso’s chicken, pepper steak, chicken chow mein, shrimp in lobster sauce with a drop of black bean sauce mixed in, pineapple chunks, vanilla/strawberry/chocolate/pistachio ice cream, fortune cookies. Like I said, I’m a simple guy!

Long story short,

I got friends-my age- who were born in Brooklyn, who for some reason think that- the “American” Chinese food we all grew up on-is now beneath them…when they eat Chinese, they have to have- REAL CHINESE stuff like…pepper salted quail, lambchoy minced with green bean, spicy fish with tofu, yam in sour sauce.

Being a pretty easy going guy, Jeff Eats is willing to try almost any restaurant “recommended” by friends to “accommodate” friends.

With the above in mind, Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and three “former” Brooklyn couples recently- did Wei’s Long Gong Chinese. Real simple- the wonton soup, egg rolls, steamed dumplings, General Tso’s chicken, roast pork fried rice, shrimp in lobster sauce with a drop of black bean sauce mixed in- were all delicious. I have absolutely no idea how the pepper salted quail, lambchoy minced with green bean, spicy fish with tofu, yam in sour sauce- tasted…but Jeff Eats’ Brooklyn friends said to tell you, these dishes were terrific. By the way, the pineapple chunks and the fortune cookies-were, pineapple chunks and fortune cookies!

Trust Jeff Eats with this one, Wei’s Long Gong Chinese’s “American” Chinese food is very-very good…if this joint was in my neighborhood, I’d be a real steady customer. Just a gut call, but I’m thinking that you guys who like REAL CHINESE FOOD will also- really enjoy Wei’s Long Gong Chinese.

Rao’s Made For Home Meat Lasagna (The Fresh Market- Boca Raton)

Rao’s Made For Home Meat Lasagna.

Real short tale…

Yesterday- “tried” 2- 9oz packages of frozen Rao’s Made For Home Meat Lasagna from The Fresh Market, 5540 North Military Trail, Boca Raton, Florida 33496, (561) 994-2221 on-sale for $3.99 (normally $5.99). Oven baked one, microwaved the other – and all I can say, LOUSY!- the meat lasagna had absolutely no taste whatsoever! Trust me on this one, my tastebuds were/are just fine and the pasta/meat/sauce/cheese combination literally had no taste- not to mention that the pasta had the consistency of a big old rubber band!

Now, you guys and Jeff Eats both know that this-food reviewing gig is purely a subjective call. With that in mind, you guys who “doubt” Jeff Eats’ opinion and/or like to waste their money- a quick internet search will provide a ton of retailers (in addition to The Fresh Market) like Walmart, Target, Publix, Costco, Amazon that carry Rao’s Made For Home Meat Lasagna.

Hole in the wall with scarily good American-Style food located at 215 Northeast 6th Avenue, Delray Beach after 23 years was forced to move- because the landlord sold the building it was in. A few months later (January, 2017) the “former” hole in the wall re-opened 3-times larger at 892 Southeast 5th Avenue, Delray Beach serving the same scarily good American-Style food!

All Jeff Eats can tell you guys, is that if you’re into absolutely dynamite burgers/ wings/ bbq ribs/ fried zucchini/ onion rings/ French fries/ tuna salad/ chili/ fried chicken/ onion soup/ meatloaf so-on and so forth, portions that could choke a horse, super reasonable prices and a staff that can’t do enough for you- Granger’s Grille is a must try for you!

You can check menu/info at grangersgrille.com.

Granger’s Grille is open Sunday noon-8pm, Monday-Friday 11:00am-9:30pm.

***** Granger’s Bar & Grill, 215 NE 6th Avenue, Delray Beach Florida (561) 276-7881.

Granger’s is a 38 seat bar-grill located on Federal Highway. The joint has something like 10 seats at the bar and a handful of booths and tables…one waitress-one busgirl-3 in the kitchen and that’s the whole shooting match. By the way, the waitress and busgirl are also the bartenders. The bathrooms are out-houses in the parking lot.

Granger’s food is absolutely great. Appetizers, burgers, salads, main dishes everything is delicious. How that little kitchen bangs out so much delicious food is beyond me, but in the 30-40 times that I have eaten at Granger’s everything was right on the money.

I am telling you, that this little joint is a MUST for you. Wear tee shirt/shorts so you don’t look stupid. The joint is open Monday-Saturday for lunch and dinner. The prices are also dirt cheap and if you are there on a Saturday Night you have to try the brick of meatloaf that is one of this joint’s specialities.

From the outside, Granger’s looks like a D U M P. Try it, you will love it.
