***** Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor, 128 South Federal Highway, Dania Beach , Florida 33004, (954) 023-4445.

Jaxson’s has been around something like 50 years. This is one of the greatest joints in all of South Florida, not to mention the United States, to get great home-made ice cream. The Food Channel has done several stories on Jaxson’s.

Decorated in Early American License Plate, Jaxson’s is located in a non-descript strip-shopping center in Dania Beach. The joint is packed day and night with people stuffing their faces with some of the most delicious ice cream that you have ever tasted. The portions are enormous and “individual” servings can feed 1-2-3 people. Jaxson’s also does, burgers, hot dogs, salads etc., but the game here is ICE CREAM. Personally, my favorite is a waffle with a scoop of strawberry and a scoop of mocha chip. That single dish, is big enough to serve 2-3 people. Be smart and don’t over order here, because (1) you will be wasting a ton of great ice cream and (2) you will be wasting a ton of money.

I am telling you that you absolutely positively want to try this joint. The ice cream and food are great…the atmosphere is terrific…the service is terrific…and the “penny candy” assortment at the front of the joint will have you reminiscing about 1950’s Brooklyn-Bronx-Queens (etc,).

There are always lines waiting to get in and for take-out. Jaxson’s is open 7-days a week…Monday-Thursday 11:30am-11pm…Friday-Saturday 11:30am- midnight…Sunday noon-11pm.

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “discovered” Biergarten in 2012- and I gotta tell you guys, that we have been steady customers ever since! Just between us- it’s one of South Florida’s best sports bars- serves off the chart delicious food, features a line-up of top notch bands/ entertainment/ events and has great service.

This joint is an absolute must try!

***** Biergarten, 309 Via de Palmas, Boca Raton, Florida 33432, (561) 395-7462.

Last Saturday night around 10pm my wife and I- and another couple stopped by a German “bar-restaurant”—Biergarten in Boca Raton. The joint has indoor seating/huge outdoor patio seating. Real simple concept–tons of different beers, wines, specialty drinks—menu loaded with appetizers, burgers, salads, sandwiches, tacos, German style wursts-schnitzels-and other dishes—local bands and djs. The joint looks like “what” I guess a German beer garden in Germany is suppose to look like and the staff wears German beer garden costumes (I think!). You can check menu/prices at www.biergartenboca.com.

What a cool place!. It was JAMMED and I do mean JAMMED! I’m gonna bet here, that half the crowd was FAU/Lynn students. Although it was approaching “my” bedtime, I still “tried” a steak slider, bbq pork slider, pastrami slider, kielbasa, potato pancakes—and I’m telling you straight up, the food was absolutely dynamite. Absolutely some of the best “bar” stuff I’ve had in a very very long time. A great dj was spinning all-types of music and I understand that the bands that work the joint, play classic rock, reggae and new stuff.

Suffice it to say, the “kids” there were having an absolute blast–and us 4 old geezers did the same. Boy! If Ithaca, New York had a joint like Biergarten back in 1966-1970–just maybe, I wouldn’t have been so anxious to graduate from Ithaca College-to get back to Brooklyn. In all fairness, Bobby Comstock & The Counts was a great band, but if memory serves me right, the food at the Dewitt Clinton Hotel where they worked- wasn’t even in the same breath as Biergarten’s grub.

Biergarten hasn’t been around for very long. I’m guessing here, but I think something like 6 months. The joint is located in the “Pink Plaza” in Boca Raton…the spot that it’s in- has over the years-housed more restaurants than you can shake a stick at. I maybe going out on a limb here, but I think that the landlord has finally found a long-term tenant.

Let me close by saying, no matter how old or for that matter young you are—you gotta try Biergarten.

Biergarten is open Sunday-Monday 11am-midnight, Tuesday-Saturday 11am-2am.

If I said to you, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes–I’ll bet a buck, that most of you -would know exactly what I’m talking about. Now, real fast-tell Jeff Eats the name of the current World Heavy Weight Boxing Champion.

The Point?

Not really sure, but it has something to do with computers, the internet, social media, cable and satellite tv, Facebook, Twitter- just too much stuff hitting the human brain all at once.

Seriously,

Jeff Eats was recently at a food truck event- 54 vying for my attention. Now don’t get me wrong, progress is good- but I fondly remember the days when it was simply a fight between the Good Humor and Bungalow Bar men.

Sometimes, too much of something is not a good thing.

Don’t know exactly where I intended to go with Boxing & The World…but it had something to do with enjoying the “moment” -not making every move you make a complicated decision and that you can’t- ever go wrong with a grilled Hebrew National Hot Dog topped with some deli mustard/ warm sauerkraut in a soft or lightly toasted hot dog bun.

For what it’s worth, Ali would have destroyed both Louis and Marciano!

Older Men Scam

Originally posted on July 14th, 2015 and everytime I read it- it cracks me up! Just thought I’d “share” it again!

* Older Men Scam.

Just got the following e-mail from Jeff Eats’ reader, Norman G.

No ifs, ands or buts- the e-mail’s “warnings” warranted- my passing them along to you guys…
_______

Subject: Older Men Scam

Women often receive warnings about protecting themselves at the mall and in dark parking lots, etc. This is the first warning I have seen for men. I wanted to pass it on in case you haven’t heard about it…

A ‘heads up’ for those men who may be regular customers at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Costco, or even Wal-Mart.

This one caught me totally by surprise. Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping.

Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don’t be naive enough to think it couldn’t happen to you or your friends.

Here’s how the scam works; Two nice looking, college-age girls will come over to your car or truck as you are packing your purchases into your vehicle. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, with their unmentionables almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. (It’s impossible not to look). When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say ‘No’ but instead ask for a ride to McDonald’s.

You agree and they climb into the vehicle. On the way, they start undressing.
Then one of them starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet.

I had my wallet stolen May 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, the 17th, 20th, 24th, and the 29th and again on June 1st, 4th, 8th, twice on the 16th & 17th, and very likely again this upcoming weekend.

So tell your friends to be careful. What a horrible way to take advantage of us older men.

Warn your friends to be vigilant.

Wal-Mart has wallets on sale for $2.99 each. I found even cheaper ones for $.99 at the Dollar Store and bought them out in three of their stores.

Also, you never get to eat at McDonald’s. I’ve already lost 11 pounds just running back and forth from Lowe’s, to Home Depot, to Wal-Mart.

So please, send this on to all the older men that you know and warn them to be on the lookout for this scam.

(The best times are just before lunch and around 4:30 in the afternoon).

TIME has named Alan Cumming one of the three most fun people in show business, and now he’s coming to The Studio at Mizner Park to dazzle us all! Alan Cumming Not Acting His Age will perform at The Studio for one-night only. See Alan up close and personal. Experience what others call hilarious and flirty! What exactly is acting your age? And who decides? These are the questions Alan Cumming has been grappling with for a very long time. In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age, he covers all the bases: sex, death and bacchanalia, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors, John Kander and Fred Ebb blend with contemporary favorites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had Botox! he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity, the time the mum from The Brady Bunch punched him in the stomach and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

Majesty of Rock: The Music of Journey & Styx

It all started when Chain Reaction banded together in South Florida and began re-creating the sounds of the American super group, Journey. They wanted to pay special homage to Journey’s best years (1977-1998), when Steve Perry fronted the band. The amazing voice of John D’Agostino, coupled with the exceptional musical talents of four equally sophisticated and experienced musicians soon propelled Chain Reaction to become one of the premier Journey reverence bands of our time. The band strives to re-create the exact sounds and nuances of Journey. Their passion for authenticity and attention to detail go a long way toward ensuring that the audience feels like they’re at a real Journey concert. While the band has enjoyed performing the music of Journey, front man John D’Agostino also loves another American super group, Styx. Turns out the rest of the band are huge Styx fans, too. So they began adding some of Styx’s best tunes to their already expansive repertoire of Journey material. The audience response was so positive, that Forever Styx was eventually added as a separate tribute band. Now you really CAN have it any way you want it: Majesty of Rock performing a Journey/Styx concert extravaganza. Take a journey with us back to the days of arena rock at it’s best.
