Just Kids from the Bronx: Telling It the Way It Was: An Oral History
* Just Kids from the Bronx: Telling It the Way It Was: An Oral History.
Great read…even if you didn’t grow up in THE BRONX!
Jeff Eats caught a hard-copy (which came out 3/3/15) on Amazon for $21.72.
Amazon Book Review:
A touching and provocative collection of memories that evoke the history of one of America’s most influential boroughs-the Bronx-through some of its many success stories
The vivid oral histories in Arlene Alda’s Just Kids from the Bronx reveal what it was like to grow up in the place that bred the influencers in just about every field of endeavor today. The Bronx is where Michael Kay, the New York Yankees’ play-by-play broadcaster, first experienced baseball, where J. Crew’s CEO Millard (Mickey) Drexler found his ambition, where Neil deGrasse Tyson and Dava Sobel fell in love with science early on and where music-making inspired hip hop’s Grandmaster Melle Mel to change the world of music forever.
The parks, the pick-up games, the tough and tender mothers, the politics, the gangs, the food-for people who grew up in the Bronx, childhood recollections are fresh. Arlene Alda’s own Bronx memories were a jumping-off point from which to reminisce with a nun, a police officer, an urban planner, and with Al Pacino, Mary Higgins Clark, Carl Reiner, Colin Powell, Maira Kalman, Bobby Bonilla, and many other leading artists, athletes, scientists and entrepreneurs-experiences spanning six decades of Bronx living. Alda then arranged these pieces of the past, from looking for violets along the banks of the Bronx River to the wake-up calls from teachers who recognized potential, into one great collective story, a film-like portrait of the Bronx from the early twentieth century until today

Mr. Nice Guy Band (Meatball Room- Boca Raton)
* Mr. Nice Guy Band.
Jeff Eats first told you guys about this superb Classic Rock band on 6/27/12 (that tale is down below).
Free show, but you know and Jeff Eats knows that Meatball Room wants you to eat and drink on its out-door patio -while the band is-on! So just maybe-if you go, you should go for some cash!
Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats already-got plans, but we’re gonna try and catch the band’s last set!

***** Mr. Nice Guy *****
Recently saw “Mr. Nice Guy” an absolutely dynamite classic rock band (1960s-1970s-1980s) at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood.
Speaking of dynamite, comedian- Jimmy J.J. Walker of tv’s 1970’s “Good Time” fame, just released a dynamite “tell-all” book, “DY-NO-MITE, GOOD TIMES, BAD TIMES, OUR TIMES”—that I highly recommend that tv afficianados catch. But I digress…
Trust me on this, Mr. Nice Guy “plays” some of the best Beatles, Santana, Eagles, Joe Cocker, Zeppelin and Stones covers that you will hear.
Mr. Nice Guy often reffered to as “MNG” is a local South Florida sextet having formed in 2002. If the group’s recent Hard Rock appearance is any indication-it has an enormous fan base.
At this stage of the story you can check audio/video/info/schedule at www.mngband.com.
The really beautiful thing about Mr. Nice Guy…in addition to a steady twice a month gig at the Hard Rock, you can catch the group at various South Florida clubs, restaurants, casinos…usually “sans” a cover charge.
If you enjoy this type of music, do yourself a favor and catch Mr. Nice Guy in action.
Super Subs Etc. (Coral Gables)
***** Super Subs Etc.
Real simple tale,
Told you guys about this amazing sub joint way-back on 11/29/11 (that tale is reprinted down below)…hadn’t been back until yesterday afternoon- the chicken cordon bleu and bbq steak 12″ subs that I split with Mrs. Jeff Eats were absolute dynamite.
No ifs ands or buts, Super Subs Etc. is a great sub joint!
Trust me, if Super Subs Etc. wasn’t so far (like 63 miles one way) from Jeff Eats’ Boca Raton home- I’d be a real steady customer!
If you like subs- you gotta try Super Subs Etc.

In my day, I’ve eaten my fair-share of subs/grinders/heros (pick your regional term)—I maybe going out on a limb here, but this 6-seat sub shop which has been around since 1977- has to be right up there with the best-of-all time. Now this isn’t an exact count, but its menu lists something like 100 different hot/cold (6″ & 12″) sandwiches. You can check menu/prices at www.urbanspoon.com.
A recent outing had me “doing”—chicken cordon bleu, philly cheesesteak, bbq steak, bbq pork rib, mushroom cheeseburger subs. I am telling you, some of the best sub-stuff that I have ever eaten. On the price front—no more expensive than your favorite neighborhood joint.
For you-guys out there who don’t get from where I am coming… A Super Subs’ sandwich is a Rembrandt, Picasso, Renoir, Van Gogh (Well, maybe not a Picasso!). Think, your favorite “slice” of pizza matched against a slice from Little Caesar’s…a Volkswagen CC against a Corvette…a 32″ flat screen tv against a 72 incher.
To sum it all…Super Subs Etc. is a terrific sub shop.
The joint is open Monday-Saturday 9am-8pm and Sunday 10am-5pm.
Big Joe’s Burgers, Wings, & Salads (Boca Raton)
***** Big Joe’s Burgers, Wings & Salads.
Way-back on 7/28/09 Jeff Eats told you guys about Big Joe’s- a “hole in the wall” burger joint in Boca Raton (“tale” is down below)…long story short, yesterday- Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats ate lunch at Big Joe’s and the mushroom cheese burger and French fries that I had-absolutely killed! Mrs. Jeff Eats’ cup of chicken noodle soup, hot ham/cheese wrap and macaroni & cheese were also- right on the money!
I know that like me, you guys are looking for real-good “hole in the wall” joints- that not too many people know about. Now, I can’t swear on how many people do or don’t know about Big Joe’s- but I can tell you that it’s definitely a hole-in-the-wall and that its food is real-good.
With the above in mind…just thought I’d mention Big Joes again- if you haven’t tried-it, try it!
By the way, back in 2009 the joint was open Monday-Friday 11am-8pm, closed on Saturday-Sunday…the hours are not 11am-7pm.

***** Big Joe’s Burgers and Wings, 2831 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton, Florida 33431 (561) 447-7995.
If you take out your Webster’s and look under “hole in the wall” burger joint…you will find Big Joe’s Burgers and Wings in Boca Raton. The joint seats something like 10, that’s right 10…and is located in a non-descript (aren’t they all) strip center on Federal Highway. Talk about crappy locations…This is what “we” call a destination spot.
Anyway…Big Joe’s is my kind of a joint. At this stage of this game, checkout its website www.bigjoesburgers.com for menu/prices.
Let me make this real simple…this joint is GREAT. The menu has loads of soups, burgers, sandwiches, wings…not to mention daily specials and desserts.
I recently did a taste-test of a bacon cheeseburger, chicken caesar salad, honey garlic chicken wings, blackened mahi mahi sandwich…absolutely delicious. Now…I don’t know how Big Joe’s makes them, but this joint serves mashed potatoes (you do remember Vice President Dan Qualye, don’t you?) that are absolutely incredible…by the way, the mashed potatoes come in “various flavors/combinations) I had the plain-old ones. The joint also has a lineup of home-made desserts…I did the chocolate peanut butter pie, great.
You absolutely-positively want to try this joint. Like I said before, it is a hole-in-the-wall—in a crappy strip center…so set your GPS or call ahead for directions.
Big Joe’s is open Monday-Friday 11am-8pm.
