* Thank God Jeff Eats Isn’t An Athlete!

Jeff Eats just read the “below” story at stack.com…

All I can say is…Thank God I’m not an Athlete!

Look!- where “eating right” got Bruce Jenner…

______________
The 6 Worst Foods for Athletes

Your practice sessions last an hour or two each day—a large chunk of time, for sure, but not quite as much as the hours available for you to sabotage your hard work. Because even if you bust your butt at practice, if you use other times during your day to pound down pizza, chicken wings and soda, you will undermine your performance.

As an athlete, you need to power your body with the right fuel—and steer clear of the wrong stuff. That’s why STACK reached out to some of the smartest experts in sports nutrition to identify the foods that can compromise your efforts. Although it’s OK to indulge in these items every now and then, they should be seen as “once in awhile” treats, not everyday eats. Here are the foods our experts identified as the six worst offenders, along with a smarter, healthier option for each.

Bacon

That crispy, sizzling slice of meat sitting next to your eggs at breakfast is doing you no favors.

“Bacon has minimal protein, lots of saturated fat and minimal nutritional value,” says Leslie Bonci, RD, nutrition consultant to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers and other professional teams. “It’s also high in salt, which not all athletes need.”

Try this instead: Looking for a smoky flavor with your breakfast? “Turkey bacon, Canadian bacon, even a lean sausage will [be better options] per serving,” says Bonci.

Energy Drinks and Soda

Soda

Do you really think drinking something that looks like windshield wiper fluid is good for you? Come on.

“Sugar-sweetened beverages are something to keep to a minimum,” says Brian St. Pierre, sports dietitian and nutrition coach at Precision Nutrition. “They cause a tremendous amount of issues that can affect health, performance and body composition. Energy drinks usually also contain stimulants that provide short-term energy. Excess consumption could affect adrenal output and affect energy and athletic performance.”

What You Should Be Drinking: St. Pierre suggests coffee or tea if you really need a caffeine fix. “And if you want a sweetened drink, try fruit infused water—lemon, lime, strawberry, whatever have you,” St. Pierre says. “Many companies offer glass bottles with fruit infusers.”

Foods With Hydrogenated Oils & Trans Fats

Chips

These aren’t exactly foods. They’re ingredients—ones you should avoid at all costs. In fact, the FDA may eventually ban trans fats altogether. They took the first steps this past fall.

“Hydrogenated oils and trans fats are vegetable oils that have had a hydrogen molecule added to their chemical structure through a process called hydrogenation,” says Nate Miyaki, author of The Samurai Diet: The Science and Strategy of Winning The Fat Loss War. “This chemical alteration, however, is what makes these foods so problematic if you are an athlete. They’ve been shown to increase belly fat and abdominal obesity, and cause an inflammatory response in the body, which impairs optimal recovery.”

What You Should Be Eating: Miyaki suggests opting for monounsaturated fats. “You can replace hydrogenated vegetable oil with olive oil,” he says. And check the labels of what you eat to make sure trans fats aren’t hiding there.

Alcohol

Beer

This one is a no-brainer—especially if you’re under 21. “An occasional drink is fine for special occasions, but not when someone is serious about their training,” says Joy Dubost, RD. “Alcohol does not enhance a workout and provides seven calories per gram with little nutrition.”

You Should Be Drinking: More water. Dubost recommends water, tea, coffee, 100 percent juice or low-fat dairy. “Sports drinks can be used during physical activity lasting more than an hour, but that really depends on the individual needs of the person,” she adds.

Cheese Puffs

Fried corn meal (what these tasty little puffs are made of) and a cheesy coating should not be a staple in any athlete’s diet. While some of them tout real cheese dust, others achieve that salty taste by using something else.

What You Should Be Eating: You can still get that satisfying crunch—just get it from a snack with some nutritional value. Try tortilla chips. “Corn tortillas provide whole grains and calcium, and are great dipper to use with salsa,” says Bonci. “Even popcorn with a little Parmesan on it provides the fill and fiber without the fat.”

Grain-based desserts

Cookies

We’re talking about things like cakes, cookies, pastries, those sponge cakes with the crème filling—y’know, all the stuff you know is bad. “They’re one of the top sources of added sugar and saturated fat in the diet,” says Dubost.

What You Should Be Eating: Plenty of sweet treats are not totally nutritionally useless. “How about an apple cobbler or an oatmeal cookie,” Bonci says. “Forgo all the unnecessary add-ins and packaged stuff.”

The Fish Guy (New Port Richey)

***** The Fish Guy, 4114 Grand Boulevard, New Port Richey, Florida 34852, (727) 264-8818.

Got a real good one for you guys…The Fish Guy which is a fish market/café combo-joint. You can eat-in (handful of tables) or you can takeout!

You can check flfishguy.com for menu/prices/info…there are 2-menus, 1-for the café and 1-for the market!

boat

Real simple story, tons of fried seafood, but there is enough grilled and blackened stuff so- the non-fried fish crowd is covered. In addition, there is plenty of non-seafood items like fried chicken, chicken wings, hamburgers so- the non-fish crowd is also good to go.

A recent outing had Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats eating-in and doing… 1/2 lb Fried Shrimp & 1/2 lb Fried Scallops Platter ($13.99, French fries, bean salad), blackened mahi mahi ($11.99, sweet potato fries, potato salad), bacon cheeseburger($7.49, fried onions, French fries) and I gotta tell you everything was right on the money! Just so we are straight with each other, The Fish Guy is sorta like a Fish Diner- nothing gourmet (whatever that means!) going on there- but trust Jeff Eats on this one- the food tastes great, the prices are super reasonable, the service is as pleasant as can be, you get to wear a tee shirt/shorts/flip flops or sneakers ensemble and you won’t need a tube of Clearasil after you eat!

shrimpy

Let Jeff Eats wrap this up for you, Jeff Eats and Mrs, Jeff Eats loved The Fish Guy…it’s like eating in a “mom & pop” neighborhood diner- that “emphasizes” fried-fish stuff rather than Greek food!

The Fish Guy is open Monday-Thursday 10am-7pm, Friday-Saturday 10am-8pm, Sunday 10am-3pm.

Are Kohl’s and T.J. Maxx Being Honest About Pricing?

* Are Kohl’s and T.J. Maxx Being Honest About Pricing?

Jeff Eats just read the below-article on dailyfinance.com.

Just between us guys, Mrs. Jeff Eats is a huge-fan of T.J. Maxx…the lady is in the store so often- that the staff “asks” her for “price checks.”

For what it’s worth- it seems to Jeff Eats that these “false advertising suits”- are no big deal, but I do- see where the plaintiffs are coming from!

Anyway…

What I really wanted to tell you guys is that…

Here in Florida on Mondays- you guys 55+ get a 10% discount at T.J. Maxx stores…Now I know, that many of you guys already knew that, but I’ll bet-that some of you didn’t know- that Home Goods and Marshall’s are owned by T.J. Maxx- and-now catch this, here in Florida there are a bunch of T.J. Maxx/Home Goods “Combo” stores…AND since the “Combo” only has 1- set of cash registers all programmed with the T.J. Maxx 10% discount-if you buy “any combination” of T.J. Maxx and Home Goods’ items, you will get 10% off your ENTIRE PURCHASE!

Now, don’t say that Jeff Eats never gave you nothin’!

Are Kohl’s and T.J. Maxx Being Honest About Pricing?

tj
Alamy Consumers flock to Kohl’s (KSS) and TJX’s (TJX) T.J. Maxx, expecting deep markdowns on apparel and other department store staples. They may not be getting the bargains that they think they’re getting.

Both retailers are being sued in different lawsuits, alleging that the discounts being promoted on price tags are deceptive. Anyone shopping at Kohl’s or T.J. Maxx knows the drill. Items appear to be on sale, referring to higher original or “compare at” prices. It helps justify or validate the purchase, and the argument here is that publishing these higher prices works on the psychology of the shopper. A fashionable $30 spring dress may seem like a good deal, but when the price tag claims that it’s selling elsewhere for $50, it may seem outright irresistible at a 40 percent discount.

It’s not right, and now legal fisticuffs are flying.

The first federal class action lawsuit was filed on July 17 in California. A pair of shoppers filed the suit, claiming that placing dubious “compare at” prices constitutes deceptive advertising. The lawsuit is specifically trying to compensate shoppers from California who have made purchases at T.J. Maxx over the past four years, but if it sticks, you know that more will follow.

T.J. Maxx explains on its website that the “compare at” price promoted on its price tag is based on its “buying staff’s estimate of the regular, retail price at which a comparable item in finer catalogs, specialty or department stores may have been sold.”

It then goes on to clarify that it buys products from thousands of vendors, so the actual item being sold may not be offered by other retailers at the “compare at” price that it’s broadcasting. It then encourages customers to do their own comparison shopping as another way to see the “great value” that it’s offering.

However, if customers are buying a pair of cargo shorts for $22 on the premise of a “compare at” price of $33 when there’s no one really selling the same item at $33, is the 33 percent discount real?

Four days after the class action lawsuit was filed against T.J. Maxx, a somewhat similar claim was made against Kohl’s. Two different California shoppers kicked off the fireworks at the popular department store chain, voicing concerns that it, too, is inflating the value of its bargains.

This is a particularly thorny issue at Kohl’s. The allegations claim that price tags offering higher “original” or “regular” prices on its own brands — including Croft & Barrow and Apt. 9 — are disingenuous if they were never offered at those higher prices. They are in-house brands, so it’s not as if they are being sold elsewhere.

It’s easy to shake our heads when folks initiate class action lawsuits, but there is some meat to these allegations. We’ll see how it plays out, and ultimately T.J. Maxx and Kohl’s may have to change their labeling practices. A good deal is still a good deal, and hopefully consumers will see it that way without having to be swayed by potentially dubious “original” or “compare at” pricing.

The hair was long, the skirts were short and tie-dye ruled the scene! Spend the night with an epic lineup of classic rock greats presenting music from the great era of the 1960’s and 70’s. Performances by Blue Oyster Cult, The Doors’ guitarist Robby Krieger and psychedelic foursome Vanilla Fudge. Sip on cooling beverage at one of our bars or sample delicious local food in between sets – concessions and drinks served all evening to round out an already awesome concert.

Blue Oyster Cult

Spanning three decades, Blue Öyster Cult has a long and storied history, including hits such as “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”, “Godzilla” and “Burnin’ for You”. The band has sold over 24 million albums worldwide, including 7 million in the United States alone. They got their start in the late ’60s on Long Island, New York, as the Soft White Underbelly, but each member had been involved in bands previously in high school and college, before ending up in the “right place at the right time” to create the beginnings of Blue Öyster Cult.
View Blue Öyster Cult’s website.

Robby Krieger of The Doors

Krieger’s energetic fingerstyle approach to the electric guitar, broad musical tastes, and songwriting helped establish the Doors as a successful rock band in the 1960’s and beyond. As the guitarist, and arguably the band’s secret weapon, he wrote or co-wrote many of the band’s songs, including “Light My Fire”, “Love Me Two Times”, “Touch Me”, and “Love Her Madly”. Krieger has performed alongside band members from Blue Oyster Cult, Oingo Boingo, The Black Crowes, Fuel, The Cult and Gov’t Mule. Rolling Stone has named him one of the 100 best guitarists of all time. Visit Robby Krieger’s website.

Vanilla Fudge

Still touring today, Vanilla Fudge retains their dynamic, psychedelic sound that helped them rise to stardom in the 1960’s. The band successfully covered of “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” by The Supremes, warping the song into a slowed-down, hard rocking version that put them in the Top 10. The band has been cited as “one of the few American links between psychedelia and what soon became heavy metal.” In 2007, they went back into the studio to record a cover of Out Through the In Door, the acclaimed Led Zeppelin album. Vanilla Fudge has been featured on hit TV shows such as Mad Men and The Sopranos. Most recently, the band returned to TV with a appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, who called them “a legendary rock ‘n’ roll band who are still as heavy as ever.”

The 101 Best Burgers in America

“Our expert panel has spoken. Did your local favorite make the list?

June 4, 2015 | 03:21 AM By Kate Kolenda, Editor

This year’s list of the best burgers in America spans the country, from sea to shining sea.

The burger is one of the staples of American popular cuisine. The simple recipe allows for considerable creativity from the chef who’s making it, and there are thousands of variations, from one end of the country to the other. And when done properly, there are few foods more delicious.

The 101 Best Burgers in America

In a recent interview, meat-blending master Pat LaFrieda shared some of the key characteristics of the foundation of a great burger: the patty. LaFrieda has found that “An eight-ounce burger, inch-thick, is perfect for a barbecue — it can get a good sear without overcooking it.” What it’s actually made of, or not made of, matters, too; the butcher likes to keep it an all-beef affair and thinks that mixing in additions such as beans and red peppers makes it “taste like meatloaf. It no longer tastes like a burger.” Finally, not all meat blends are created equal, and he warned us that the meat-to-fat ratio should be 80/20 because “Anything else is a marketing ploy.”

We at The Daily Meal began ranking our country’s burgers back in 2013, when we detailed what we had found to be the 40 best, and last year, we took it up to a comprehensive 101. In order to compile this year’s ranking, we assembled a list of nearly 250 burgers from all across the country, from Hollywood, Florida, to Anchorage, Alaska. Building upon last year’s suggestions from various authorities on the subject, we dug through online reviews and combed existing best-of lists, both in print and online, that were published since our 2014 burger ranking. Even though each of the burgers we found was unique, certain qualities were universal must-haves: high-quality beef (you’ll find no turkey or black bean burgers here), proper seasoning, well-proportioned components, and an overall attention to detail that many would call “making it with love.” As usual, we didn’t include large chains like Shake Shack and In-N-Out — we celebrated the best chain burgers earlier this year — choosing instead to focus on smaller-time restaurant owners. We compiled a survey which was then taken by a panel of 50 noted writers, journalists, bloggers, and culinary authorities from across the country, asking them to vote for their favorites, limited to the ones that they’ve tried.

We divided these burgers by region and compiled a survey that was taken by a panel of 70 noted writers, journalists, bloggers, and other culinary authorities from across the country, among them Hamburger America author George Motz, along with the knowledgeable Daily Meal staff, City Editors, and contributors. Participants were asked to vote for their favorites, limiting themselves to places they’ve actually visited. We tallied the results, and the 101 burgers that received the most votes are the ones you’ll find in this story.

This year’s list spans the country, from sea to shining sea. New York City gained the most ground over last year, garnering three new spots to lead the way with 18 entries. Los Angeles edged up just slightly with one new spot to claim eight burgers joints on the list. Texas gained substantial ground; last year, there were only six burgers from the state that made the cut, whereas this year, there are five in Austin, two in Houston, and three others from smaller towns, which brings the grand total number of spots given to Lone Star State burgers to 10. Atlanta and Philadelphia each lost two spots since last year, winning three each out of 101. And San Francisco and Seattle lost ground as well. But great burgers aren’t limited to just big cities; other locations include Hackensack, New Jersey; Lake Oswego, Oregon; Meriden, Connecticut; Roanoke, Virginia; and Salina, Kansas.

Regionally, the Midwest slid from eight spots to 11 this year and the Southeast also lost ground, going from 27 to 21 spots. Conversely, the Northeast held steady at 30 entries, the West gained four to bring its total to 23, and the biggest gain was seen in the Southwest, which doubled its representation from eight spots to 16.

One question is: Why do burgers hold such a high place in the American culinary psyche? We think Mr. Motz said it best when he told us that “Americans are intensely proud of their hamburger heritage, probably because it’s widely known that the burger is an American invention. The burger also carries a lot of weight in the nostalgia department and is the ultimate portable comfort food available everywhere.” So, did your local favorite make the list? (If not, let us know and we’ll add it to our list to consider next year.) What about that burger you crave from that certain spot back in your hometown? You’ll just have to read on to find out.
