***** Diner By-The Sea, 215 Commercial Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33308, (954) 491-0642.

You guys into “mom & pop” diners are gonna love Diner By-The-Sea in Fort Lauderdale.

Simple concept working there- open 7 days a week 6am-2pm, breakfast/lunch, flat-top grill cooking, booth/counter seating, Saturday & Sunday complimentary mimosas with breakfast/lunch, cash only!

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats recently did breakfast at Diner By-The-Sea and the joint’s 1960’s retro decor, cool vibe, super pleasant service, reasonable prices and dynamite food-hooked (pun intended) us as fans!

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats absolutely loved Diner By-The-Sea… other than for a humongous sailfish (or whatever kinda fish it is!) mounted on the wall, flat screen tvs and some nautical chozzerai (Yiddish: junk, trash) for decor- we were back in Brooklyn 1962!

***** Menchies Frozen Yogurt, 11057 Pinese Boulevard, Pembroke Pines, Florida 33026, (954) 495-4044.

Holy Moly!!!—just what we need, a-n-o-t-h-e-r self-serve yogurt joint. Say hello to Menchies Frozen Yogurt…franchise chain with loads of locations all over America… When you check its website–www.menchies.com you will find, that (for our purposes) it currently has outlets in Pembroke Pines, Davie, Hialeah and Tamarac. Menchies also has spots in Orlando, Lake Mary, Kissimmee and Winter Park- Florida. The chain’s website has a “huge” list of furture South Florida-locations with addresses and phone numbers…so, if Pembroke Pines, Davie, Hialeah and Tamarac don’t “work” for you, don’t cha worry, you’ll soon be able to fill a cup at 44 cents an ounce with 10 rotating flavors and loads of toppings.

For the record…yesterday (Sunday), I tried the Pembroke Pines’ joint out. Got there about 3:30pm and there must have been at least 20 people on-line waiting to load their cups up. You regular Jeff Eats’ readers…know that I am not a big-yogurt-fan…give me a Dairy-Queen Chocolate Heath Bar Blizzard, any day. With that in mind, I found the chocolate-vanilla-original tart “samples” to be delicious. To be perfectly honest with you, I gotta rate Menchies right-up there with the best self-serve joints that I’ve been to. The yogurt was right on the money…the toppings bar literally had “tons” of offerings (check website for list), the joint was as clean as a whistle and the toppings bar was constantly being tended to by an employee who was as pleasant and helpful as could be.

You-regular readers know, that I consider the self-serve yogurt business to be a huge FAD…which will soon have loads of unhappy owners and franchisees. That said, for as long as this party lasts, from what I can tell…Menchies has a terrific product and knows how to operate stores on the ground level.

If self-serve is your game, you will really enjoy Menchies.

Menchies is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-11pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-midnight.

***** Lee’s Chinese Food Take-Out, 7102 Southwest 117th Avenue, Miami, Florida 33183, (305) 271-4891.

Got a real-good Chinese takeout joint for you guys who live/work in Kendall…Lee’s Chinese Food Take-Out.

Let me make this one short and simple…

Jeff Eats has eaten his fair share of South Florida Chinese food—and Lee’s Chinese has to be rated as one of the best Chinese takeout joints that I’ve had the pleasure to come across.

The other evening Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats visited with some friends “down” in Kendall—we picked-up some stuff from Lee’s Chinese…won ton soup, egg rolls, pan fried dumplings, bbq ribs, roast pork fried rice, beef with oyster sauce, shrimp with black bean sauce, honey garlic chicken, roast pork lo mein, mushu chicken—now nothing for nothing, I’m telling you that Lee’s Chinese food was right up there with best of breed. Look! Jeff Eats was born in Brooklyn in 1949—and as a result, I am an absolute expert on what constitutes good-great New York-Jewish Chinese food. For the record, from 1949-1991 Jeff Eats fressed (non Jews look-it up) his way through “countless” Brooklyn-Queens-Manhattan-Long Island Chinese joints–so I “say” I know my stuff…and I am telling you, that Lee’s Chinese is real-good. For those looking for some sort of pecking order…my favorites were the egg rolls, pan fried dumplings and the honey garlic chicken—that said, every dish was delicious.

While I’m pontificating here…You guys do know, that there really is no such thing as “bad” Chinese take-out, don’t you? This kinda food is just a matter of incremental degrees. A liter of Coke and a plate loaded with Chinese stuff in front of a tv—and there really isn’t too much to bitch about, is there? Be honest, who here hasn’t eaten cold Chinese food right out of the frig the next morning–or for that matter, just combined Chinese left-overs and then reheated for 90 seconds in the microwave? Everybody does it…and unless you’re from Mars or something, the “next” day stuff always tastes great.

Anyway…before I go off on another Chinese tangent—let’s just say that Jeff Eats really enjoyed Lee’s Chinese Food.

You can check menu/prices at www.leeschinesefood.com.

Lee’s is open Monday-Thursday 11:30am-10pm, Friday-Saturday 11:30am-11pm, Sunday noon-10pm.
