***** Shiver’s BBQ, 28001 South Dixie Highway, Homestead, Florida 33033, (305) 248-2272.

Every so often Jeff Eats gets asked, “What’s one of your best bbq joints?”

Just so you know, it’s Shiver’s BBQ- the only problem I got with the joint is that it’s in Homestead and Jeff Eats lives in Boca Raton! Trust me, BIG DRIVE!

Long story short, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “just” finished eating lunch there…bbq babyback ribs, bbq beef ribs, bbq chicken, corn nuggets, cornbread soufflé, sweet potato souffle, corn on the cob, French fries- everything was dynamite!

Jeff Eats first told you guys about Shiver’s on September 18, 2011…like I said earlier, Big Drive!

All I know, if Shiver’s was closer to my Boca Raton home, I’d “literally” be eating in the joint all the time!

***** Shiver’s BBQ, 28001 South Dixie Highway, Homestead, Florida 33033, (305) 248-2272.

Let’s play Southerner…got a great bbq joint for you, Shiver’s BBQ in Homestead. Shiver’s has been around for something like 50 years. Just so you know, we are talking “smoked goods” here—so, if the sweet sauces of Tony Roma’s or Bobby Rubino’s are your game–come prepared! Personally, I’m not a huge smoked-fan…but Shiver’s like the Three Pigs, has the formula for Just Right. You can check menu/prices at www.shiversbbq.com.

Shiver’s got a cute idea going…you eat at long picnic tables which line the joint. So in theory, you “could” be eating with strangers. Over the years, I’ve seen this seating thing done at other joints—Shorty’s B-B-Q in Miami (9200 South Dixie Highway) which has been around since 1951, has a similar setup (see review 7/10/08)…I also remember eating in a few Amish joints in Lancaster, Pennsylvania—they had “group” seating, but also had family style portions—but that’s a whole ‘nother story.

A recent outing had me doing…corn nuggets, macaroni & cheese, cornbread souffle, french fries, babyback ribs, bbq chicken, pulled pork. Let me make this real-simple…Shiver’s BBQ is right-up there with the best bbq joints that- this originally from Brooklyn boy has ever eaten in. Everything was outrageously delicious.

Y’all–Shiver’s is a homerun.

Shiver’s BBQ is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-9pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-10pm.

“Live from Laurel Canyon – Songs and Stories of American Folk Rock” is a 90 minute retrospective of music and stories of some of the most influential artists who lived in Laurel Canyon between 1965 and 1975. Similar to other legendary rock and roll neighborhoods of the same era like Haight Ashbury in San Fransisco or Greenwich Village in the NYC, Laurel Canyon was a community of artists who would forge new genres of music (Folk Rock) and forever change the look, sound and attitude of American pop music. Bands like The Mamas and The Papas, the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Doors, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, James Taylor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, America, and the Eagles. Much more than a ‘tribute’ act, Live from Laurel Canyon not only performs the music you love, but shares with you the stories that inspired them. Live from Laurel Canyon is a journey through a special time in American pop music… won’t you join us?

A recent e-mail received by Jeff Eats.

Jeff,
Long time reader. First time writer.
Just between you and me, where can I find a really good Italian meatball? I’ve been in Florida for 5 years (formerly from Detroit) and really haven’t found a joint that makes ones that are special. My wife and I live in__________, Coconut Creek, but we’ll drive for the right meatball. By the way, we’ve been to tons of joints all over south Florida.
Thanks,
Ronnie G

To be perfectly honest with you- you sound kinda picky to me- but what the heck…

Thanks for reading…

***** Gianni’s Italian Restaurant, 1601 East Atlantic Boulevard, Pompano Beach, Florida 33060 (954) 942-1733.

I have been stuffing my face at Gianni’s for years. I don’t know how long this Southern Italian Joint has been in business, but my best guess is 20-25 years.

Real simple review…

Gianni’s is an absolutely terrific Italian restaurant. The food is delicious. The service is as friendly and as competent as can be. The prices are no more expensive than your favorite neighborhood “mom & pop” red sauce joint. Just so you know, Giann’s “enormous” garlic rolls are off-the-chart and worth the price of admission alone.

Gianni’s is open for lunch and dinner. If I were you, I would make a reservation, as the joint is always packed in the evenings.

Gianni’s is one of my favorite South Florida Italian Restaurants. Don’t miss this one.

Got a real good donut joint for you guys to checkout- Maxi Donas in Pembroke Pines.

Real simple tale to tell…mom & pop hole in the wall joint- order/pickup at counter, handful of tables, rotating daily selection of something-like 15 different donuts, coffee/handful of other beverages, open Tuesday-Saturday 9am/7pm/Sunday10am-7pm/closed Monday.

Yesterday- Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “discovered” Maxi Donas and I gotta tell you that this hole in the wall joint’s donuts absolutely killed.

Now I may not be a NYC cop- that said, I know my donuts and I am telling you guys, off the chart delicious!

Got one problem with Maxi Donas- who in their right mind first opens a DONUT SHOP at 9am Tuesday-Saturday and 10am on Sunday?

Anyway- you guys can check menu/prices/info at maxidonaspembroke.business.site.

* “Zinger’s Delicatessen–1 Year Anniversay”

About a year-ago, I told you guys about Zinger’s Delicatessen which had just opened in Boca Raton. One year later–some things bear repeating…

Zinger’s Delicatessen is one of the best, if not the best–New York Kosher Style Deli in South Florida.

I have “reprinted” Jeff Eats’ August 18, 2011 review…and it needs “only” three minor changes:
1: Zinger’s is open 7 days a week for lunch/dinner and for breakfast on Saturday-Sunday,
2: Zinger’s “current” potato knishes are as good as the pushcart-ones I mentioned.
3: Zinger’s website is up and running.

If real New York Kosher Style deli is you game, you gotta try Zinger’s Delicatessen!

***** Zinger’s Delicatessen, 7132 Beracasa Way, Boca Raton, Florida 33433, (561) 826-7323.

If, delicious- New York Kosher Style Deli is your game—you absolutely, positively have to give Zinger’s Delicatessen in Boca Raton a try.

For you fressers out there…Zinger’s in a “former” life, was Pastrami Queen (see 9/12/08 writeup)…to make a long story short, family “matters” resulted in Pastrami Queen closing in late 2010. This past Tuesday, Zinger’s opened for business—for our purposes, SAME OWNER!–NEW “NYC” DECOR!–SAME TERRIFIC FOOD!

Last night I ate dinner at Zinger’s.

Zinger’s is located in the exact-spot where Pastrami Queen was. Gary Zinger who owned Pastrami Queen is Zinger’s owner. The restaurant’s layout hasn’t changed, but the decor has…let’s just say, that stainless steel walls/ceiling and art-deco signage rival the best-deli decor here and in NYC. The joint has 3-flat screen tvs and a takeout counter that will make you want to quit Weight Watchers.

Let’s talk food…

To be perfectly honest with you, I seriously doubt that there is a better New York Kosher Style Deli down here in South Florida. I’ll even go so-far as to say, Zinger’s Delicatessen can easily hold its own with legendary players like NYC’s- Carneige, Stage, 2nd Avenue and Katz’s delis…if you aren’t a native Nooo Yoorker, please feel free to insert your hometown favorite delis’ names.

Just so you know, I was a Pastrami Queen “regular”…so, it was absolutely impossible to eat-at Zinger’s, shall we say incognito. The meal was “on the arm” with Gary Zinger literally having me “try” everything in the joint. Take it for what it’s worth, the pastrami, corned beef, brisket, turkey off the bone are as good as it gets. The joint also makes- delicious, potato pancakes-chopped liver-tuna salad-chicken salad-matzoh ball soup-smashed French fries-Italian beef sub.

Just so we are straight…don’t want you to think that I’m a Zinger’s shill—I’ve eaten better potato knishes—like the ones my father, brother Andy and I use to get in 1958 from the pushcart stationed right outside of Fortunoff on Livonia Avenue in Brooklyn while waiting for my mother to finish shopping.

Trust me on this…Zinger’s is a homerun.

Like I said before, I tried a load of stuff. I will tell you, that the sandwiches being delivered to the tables were nice-sized… I didn’t see one group leave without a doggy bag… and no one bitched to Gary about the service/prices.

Zinger’s website is www.zingersdelicom. The site is currently under construction, so give it some-time to get up and running.

Zinger’s does breakfast, lunch and dinner…The joint is open 7 days a week 7am-10pm.
