***** PDQ, 2341 North Federal Highway, Pompano Beach, Florida 33062, (954) 785-6285.

Real simple story to tell…

PDQ’s chicken tenders are absolute dynamite! They come either “crispy” or “grilled.”- 25 tenders run $31.80 and 50 go for $57.50.

Just wanted you guys to know, that on New Year’s Day 2016- Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats are having a whole bunch of people over to our house…

We just placed an order for 100 crispy- and 100 grilled tenders with PDQ’s Pompano Beach joint – we also got other stuff ordered… For the “math challenged” 2 x $57.50= $115.

When Jeff Eats sees a good deal, I like to tell you guys about it!

PDQ has 23 joints in Florida. You can check locations/menu/prices/info at eatpdq.com.

***** PDQ (People Dedicated to Quality), 2015 Okeechobee Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida 33409, (561) 594-1906.

On April 30, 2013 Jeff Eats told you guys about PDQ a “new” fast-food/casual chicken chain–that is scheduled to open its West Palm Beach location on Sunday, May 5, 2013. The April 30, 2013 writeup is reprinted “after” today’s “thoughts.”

For the record, this afternoon Jeff Eats “ate” at a Family & Friends outing in the West Palm Beach store and I gotta tell you, this joint is going to be an absolute homerun.

Before I tell you about my “meal”—for what it’s worth, I don’t really care for the name PDQ. To me, the letters P D Q really don’t convey what this joint is all about. Nothing for nothing, but the owners of this business have created a fast food/casual hybrid…think Panera Bread and you may appreciate where I’m going with this. What they “got” is an order at/pick up at the counter fast food restaurant that looks like an upscale sports bar. I loved the look of the joint (and yes, it’s got a load of large flat screen TVs) but if you do some checking, many people use the term PDQ to mean “fast” or “right away”…that said, I think the last thing that PDQ wants is for you to think of its food as being “fast food” The store is logoed with big letters that say, “People Dedicated to Quality”–so Jeff Eats sees where the PDQ comes from (actually if we wanted to get technical here it should be PDTQ)…personally, I wouldn’t have used PDQ because to a great number of people PDQ means “other” things. Jeff Eats’ personal favorites -Pretty Damned Quick and Pennies Dimes Quarters.

Now that Jeff Eats has pontificated on the PDQ name…let’s talk food.

First let me start by saying, this 4,200 square foot free standing building is absolutely great looking…it has a drive thru and looks like something right out of the Florida Keys. There is also a huge open kitchen and you can see everything being prepared. In talking with the its founders (who by the way, created the Outback Steakhouse chain) everything is freshly made and the restaurant has no freezers. While there, Jeff Eats got a kick out of watching the staff squeeze 100s of lemons for the fresh-squeezed lemonade—For you wise-guys out there, yes! I got a kick out of watching, nothing sinister, lewd or whatever your devious minds maybe thinking!

Jeff Eats “tried” the tenders, hand cut fresh French fries, chicken Caesar salad, fried chicken sandwich, turkey breast sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich, chocolate shake, apple slices with toffee—and I’m telling you, every item and I do mean every item was delicious. For the record–the food was “on the house”…which made it “easy” to literally order almost every menu item. If I got one bitch, I thought that the fries had just a drop too much salt on them—trust me, that one little itsy bitsy “problem” is easy to cure. Just a quickie, if you take a look at Jeff Eats’ 1/19/2007 Outback Steakhouse “review” note the salt-complaint… Goes to show you, Jeff Eats and the guys running this joint are consistent, if they are anything.

Check www.eatpdq.com for menu/prices/locations/pictures.

In talking to management, there are currently 4 Tampa, 2 North Carolina, 1 Oakland Park, 1 West Palm Peach PDQs…and “for” our purposes-2013-2014 planned locations-Wellington, Boca Raton and Pompano Beach.

Let me wrap this one up this way…

Based on what I saw, ate and heard PDQ is going to develop into a major national chain. The guys behind this deal know exactly what to do and how to do it…that is if they–

Just lose the salt shaker…

*****
April 30, 2013
PDQ’s menu features lightly fried chicken tenders/sandwiches, grilled chicken and turkey breast sandwiches, salads, French fries and shakes.

Just a quick heads-up…Jeff Eats is “hearing” tremendous things about a brand new-fast food chicken chain PDQ which currently has 4 Tampa/1 Oakland Park/1 West Palm Beach/2 North Carolina locations.

Haven’t tried the joint out yet, but some buddies of mine-told Jeff Eats that PDQ (Oakland Park) makes amazingly delicious grilled chicken/fried chicken tenders/turkey/salads/fries/shakes. One caveat, three of those buddies way back when- thought that the Edsel was going to be a homerun and the fourth guy to this very day-claims that aliens abducted him in 1989.

As I mentioned 4 seconds ago, there is one location in Oakland Park…this coming Sunday-May 5th, PDQ is opening a second South Florida location in West Palm Beach.

Check www.www.eatpdq.com for menu/locations.

For what it’s worth–the chain is owned by one of the guys who created the Outback Steakhouse chain. Nothing for nothing, a few quick conversations with a handful of fast food/casual restaurant developers–had them figuring that PDQ had a real shot to develop into a major chain. The consensus was, that PDQ may appeal to a huge segment of Chik-fil-A’s customer base that is looking for a more diversified menu. Throw in 4,500 square foot stores/with drive thrus that are open on Sunday—and just maybe, PDQ has the formula to be a homerun-chain.

Bern’s Steak House (Tampa)

Bern’s Steak House, 1208 South Howard avenue, Tampa, Florida 33506, (813) 251-2421, bernssteakhouse.com.

A recent e-mail received from long time Jeff Eats’ reader, Andy Gold…

Hey Jeff,

As you know I’ve been reading you for years, blah, blah, blah.

Just curious, have you ever eaten in Bern’s Steak House in Tampa? The reason I ask, is because my wife and I are going to be visiting Tampa on some personal business the first week of March and we’ve been hearing about this legendary upscale Steak House for years and figured we’d give it a shot. It’s very hard to get a reservation, etc.

Your thoughts as always would be appreciated.

Thanks

Andy Gold
__________

Andy Gold,

As you may- or may not know, Bern’s has been around since 1956. If you check YELP and other review sites, many-many-many people swear by this joint!

Long story short, over the years I’ve eaten in the joint 3-times with the latest outing having been in January, 2020.

All I can tell you is that IMHO- Bern’s Steak House is an absolute JOKE! Its overpriced food stinks and its service is absolutely horrendous (no, make that- atrocious).

Just in case you were wondering, the reason for the 3- outings, business associates picked the joint.

As you know, food reviewing is purely a subjective call. You know the game- what I like, you may hate and vice versa.

In life there are things that can’t be explained…with that in mind, why anyone would rate Bern’s Steak House as being top-shelf is beyond my comprehension!

Thanks for being such a loyal reader…

DEFINITELY NOT A BERN’S STEAK HOUSE FAN!

Shaquille O’Neal — always a familiar face on the Super Bowl party scene courtesy of his wild bash Shaq’s Fun House — is heading to Tampa to mount a Sunday kick-off show, Mercari Presents The Shaq Bowl.

Broadcasting live from Tampa in a custom-built stadium, the event will feature athletes, celebrities and artists across two teams competing in challenges to win the first-ever Shaq Bowl trophy. The three-hour special kicks off at 3 p.m. ET and will stream free on Facebook and on the event’s website as well as being simulcast by LiveXLive across over 20 platforms including LiveXLive, YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, and Twitter.

“With no in-person events this year, I teamed up with Mercari to create The Shaq Bowl and connect Americans on the biggest day for sports of the year,” says O’Neal. “Featuring a ton of my celebrity friends competing in viral challenges, plus superstar musical artists all live from Tampa, prepare for the most fun and action-packed Big Game Sunday show ever.”

It will feature a performance by Migos and DJ Diesel with a surprise A-list guest.

Other sponsors include Corona, Quaker Chewy, Skillshare, Xersion, JC Penny, Bacardi, Truff, Aeropostale, Nautica, and Emsculpt Neo.

The Shaq Bowl is produced by Medium Rare, a company that previously rolled out Gronk Beach, Shaq’s Fun House, The Sports Illustrated Awards, Shaq vs Gronk, and Black Entrepreneurs Day.

Health Benefits of Strawberries

* Health Benefits of Strawberries.

Jeff Eats recently read the below story on Gayot (gayot.com).

Personally, I’d prefer 2-slices and a large Coke- to a bowl of strawberries any day of the week…

Now, no scientist here, but Jeff Eats is thinking- that just in case the Albert Einsteins of the world are onto something here- starting tomorrow on a daily basis, I’m gonna “do” 2-scoops of Breyers Strawberry Waffle Cone Ice Cream!

_______

Health Benefits of Strawberries

These Berries are Bursting with Benefits

image

With strawberries’ natural heart shape and deep red hue, they were perhaps destined to be associated with matters of the heart. They are a symbol for Venus, the goddess of love, and revered as an aphrodisiac. Legend has it that if you share a double strawberry with someone, he or she will become the object of your affection.

Though no one can quantify just how much strawberries contribute to healthy romance, evidence suggests that strawberries can play a significant role in heart health. A study conducted at the Harvard School of Public Health found that participants eating the most strawberries had the lowest blood levels of C-reactive protein, a marker for inflammation in the blood vessels, and slightly lower cholesterol levels than those who consumed fewer strawberries. Another study found that strawberry eaters have lower blood pressure than non-strawberry eaters. Further, strawberries are a good source of potassium, which helps regulate electrolytes in the body, lowering the risk of heart attack and stroke. Strawberries’ folate, fiber and vitamin C also provide heart-protective benefits.

A healthy heart also makes for a healthy brain, since brain cells need to be nourished by nutrients in the blood traveling through the cardiovascular system. The myriad phytonutrients in strawberries can protect against oxidative damage that impairs brain function. The USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging found that strawberries help prevent a decline in motor and cognitive skills commonly related to aging.

The same phytonutrients that benefit the heart and brain also make strawberries potent cancer-fighters. Anthocyanins, the pigments that give these berries their characteristic crimson color, are powerful antioxidants, which help protect cells from free radical damage, thereby curtailing the risk for cancer. As far as antioxidant content, strawberries rank third highest (just below blackberries and walnuts) out of 1,000 foods surveyed in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. In one study among the elderly, they found that those eating the most strawberries were three times less likely to develop cancer than their non-strawberry-eating counterparts.

Strawberry Health Benefits:

– Provide high levels of fiber, folate, and vitamin C; lowers C-reactive protein levels in the blood

– May protect cardiovascular health

– May protect brain function and guard against cancer with phytonutrients

– Boast third-highest level of antioxidants in a survey of 1,000 foods

– Possess anti-inflammatory properties

Those anthocyanins also possess anti-inflammatory properties. They work in much the same way as anti-inflammatory drugs, by blocking the activity of the COX enzyme. However, strawberries — unlike such pharmaceuticals — won’t cause side effects like intestinal bleeding. This makes them an ideal dietary choice for those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and related conditions.

Beyond such vital health benefits, strawberries can also enhance physical beauty. A cup of sliced strawberries contains as much vitamin C as one cup of orange juice, and vitamin C is essential for maintaining strong connective tissue in skin. In other words, strawberries may help keep your skin plump and healthy and stave off wrinkles. Perhaps that’s why Madame Tallien, one of the figures in Emperor Napoleon’s court, insisted on bathing in the juice of 22 pounds of crushed strawberries.

With so many benefits, it’s not surprising that strawberries would inspire such decadence. Even the indulgence of strawberries with Champagne or a strawberry daiquiri has its advantages; researchers have discovered that alcohol boosts the natural antioxidant capacity of strawberries by one-third and increases their ability to seek out and fight free radicals. Why not toast to the strawberry and to your good health?

***** Ruven’s, 13800 Jog Road, Delray Beach, Florida 33484, (561) 499-9003.

Back on February 20, 2011 Jeff Eats told you guys about Ruven’s a New York Kosher Style Deli that had just opened for business in the San Marco Shopping Center in Delray Beach. To make a long story short– Ruven’s opened in a spot where two bagel/delis had previously failed. I guess, Ruven’s owner, Steve Ratinetz was betting on real good food and “three times the charm” to make Ruven’s a winner…

Anyway…

Here it is 3-years later and Ruven’s is “sort-a” still around. Now follow me, a few months ago, Ratinetz moved Ruven’s…3 maybe- 4 bays down-into a store formerly occupied by Lenny’s New York Grille.

Anyway…

No doubt in Jeff Eats’ mind…the ‘new” Ruven’s is now in a much better spot–that being right next door to Publix. Same food and service-with the “new” Ruven’s featuring a really cool “lower NYC east-side” circa 1940-1950 decor. Having eaten in Lenny’s numerous times, I can tell you-that Ratinetz did a great job in combining his own decorative ideas with Lenny’s decor remnants.

Just wanted to re-introduce you guys to an old-favorite of mine.

Now…Does Ruven’s qualify under the “three times the charm” rule?

The original February 20, 2011 review is reprinted below.

***** Ruven’s, 13800 Jog Road, Delray Beach, Florida 33484, (561) 499-9003.
Bingo!— Home Run!

If you are looking for a terrific-New York Kosher Style Deli—your wish has been answered. Say hello, to Ruven’s which opened last Wednesday in Delray Beach. For right now, the joint is open 7 days a week from 8am-3pm—look for “dinner” to be added sometime in late March.

Just some background info… “this” Ruven’s is owned by Steve Ratinetz who in the mid 1990′s-2003 owned/operated Ruven’s in Plainview, New York—which was an absolutely terrific kosher deli. My January 25, 2011 Ruven’s of Long Island writeup- has more “history” if you are a history-buff.

You know and I know, that South Florida has more bagel delis than you can shake a stick at…just for the record, Ruven’s is not and I repeat the word NOT, a bagel deli. For sure, it has the requisite “500″ types of bagels, bialys and onion boards—that said, this joint is all about pastrami- corned beef- brisket- turkey- stuffed derma- potato pancakes- blintzes, chopped liver-stuffed cabbage-fried kreplach-matzo ball soup—that rival the best stuff served in NYC, Chicago…or for that matter, anywhere that you formerly called home.

If there is one thing that Jeff Eats knows—it’s good deli.

This afternoon, in no particular order– I did a “taste test” of pastrami, corned beef, brisket, turkey off the bone, matzo ball soup, cabbage soup, stuffed derma, potato pancakes, chopped liver. fried kreplach…absolutely delicious.

Based on Jeff Eats’ “maiden outing”—I’m putting Ruven’s right up there with South Florida’s best New York Kosher Style Delis. Throw-in huge portions at reasonable prices…and I can’t see Ruven’s not quickly developing an enormous following.

You now know about a terrific deli—this one is a keeper!

***** Galuppi’s, 1103 N. Federal Highway, Pompano Beach, Florida 33062 (954) 785-0226.

Last night, I had an absolutely terrific time at a joint named Galuppi’s in Pompano Beach. Just so you know, Galuppi’s which calls itself “Galuppi’s Restaurant, Patio Bar & Banquets” is actually located on the public Pompano Beach Golf Course… the view from its out-door patio of the course is absolutely amazing.

Galuppi’s is basically a restaurant/catering facility. There is a small indoor restaurant that has a large sit-at-bar, 4 booths and maybe a half-dozen hi-tops…outside, there is another sit-at-bar and loads of tables…there is also a banquet room attached to the restaurant that can be used for private parties or for restaurant customers. Now, to put this whole layout in perspective…go to Galuppi’s website at www.galuppis.com where you will find actual pictures of what I have been blabbing about, along with menu/prices/and other details.

Last night, Galuppi’s which does lunch and dinner 7 days a week and brunch on Sunday had The Beatles’ tribute band “Anthology” performing from 8pm-midnight. Suffice it to say, this joint was absolutely packed… the restaurant-the banquet room-the outside bar/patio…the band was on a small stage on the patio and I’ll bet you that from 8:30pm-10:30 pm (time I was there) there were at least 500-600 people maybe even more, eating…drinking…dancing. I am telling you, it was an absolutely great “party.” By the way, there was no cover charge or minimum…so for the price of a meal or a drink…or for that matter, just walking in…got you into this “concert.”

Just a quick note, “Anthology” was terrific. They were dressed in replicas of The Beatle’s Shea Stadium army-uniforms and had the requisite Beatle haircuts…they did some great covers of The Beatles’ hits. The group is extremely personable and their interaction with the crowd had the joint really jumping. Their faux British accents which came and went all evening long, added to the fun…and yes, they even have a left-handed bass player. You can check “Anthology” out at www.myspace.com/fab4anthology. I guarantee that based on last night’s action, Galuppi’s owners will have “Anthology” back for another gig in the very near future.

I already gave you this joint’s website…take a look at its menu. There are plenty of appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches, entrees and desserts to keep everyone busy…By the way, the prices are very reasonable and last night our waitress Bobbi-Lynn was absolutely terrific despite the fact that the joint was absolutely packed (and I do mean packed). Last night I had babyback ribs, I also sampled the crab-cakes, snapper francaise and steak kabobs. The food is real-decent. Personally I would put it about “1-notch” above the stuff you get in your typical neighborhood sports bar. Just so you know, Galuppi’s also has tons of flat screen tv sets inside and outside…Last night every set was tuned to the Olympic Games, so if “The Beatles” weren’t your game, you could scream for the American swimmers.

One thing that I found interesting…the banquet room has sound-proof glass. Amazingly, while eating in the room, you couldn’t hear the out-door crowd or the band at all.

Galuppi’s is open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week and for brunch on Sunday. According to its website, the joint has all kinds of entertainment and “specials”…so If you want to try Galuppi’s, I would suggest that you ”call ahead” to find out “what’s on tap” (pun intended).
