* BAGGED!!!

Just read the following story in the New York Post–just think if these NYC-guys got elected down here!

“Council seeks 10-cent bag fee…Shoppers could soon be hit with a 10-cent bag fee for every paper or plastic bag they shlep out of the grocery and retail stores, under legislation set to be introduced in the City Council tomorrow. Eight council members have signed on to the eco-friendly endeavor, which would require retail stores to charge–and allow them to keep–a dime for every bag provided to customers. ‘We want to achieve dramatic reductions in bag waste, but we also want to make sure we don’t have any harmful impacts on…small businesses,’ one of the bill’s lead sponsors, Brad Lander (D-Brooklyn, right) said outside City Hall. ‘You can avoid it entirely if you bring your reusable bags.” He said the move emulates efforts in Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco and DC that have cut down bag waste by 60 to 95 percent. Officials said the goal was to hit at least the 60 percent mark here while saving on a good chunk of the $10 million the city spends yearly to ship used bags to out-of-state landfills. Customers who pay for groceries with food stamps would be exempt. Restaurants too, would be exempt, while street vendors would not.”

The way Jeff Eats sees it…

If a law like this “came” to South Florida, it actually would prove to be a wash—after you’ve spent all of those dimes at Publix, you’ll need to “go” on food stamps…

Governor Scott is looking better and better…

Went shopping yesterday at Publix. Would have cost me an extra 70 cents.

  2. ZIPPERMAN2232 says...

I guess no more double bagging for me.

  3. Mike says...

Was at Whole Foods Santa Monica, was asked for 40 cents to bag groceries. Next visit I brought reusables. Painless.
Makes good sense;,FL needs to follow suit.

  4. Johnny C. says...

only one who benefits are the stores who use to give you the bags for nothing.

  5. RORY says...

If a 10 cents law were to be imposed in s florida you would have an absolute disaster. the supermarkets to help older folks use loads of bags so that no one bag is too heavy. I know that when my wife shops for our family in publix sometimes she will come home with 10-15 bags of items. it would seem insane for her to have to pay an extra 1 1.50 for those bags. I know that Costco doesn’t use bags but that’s because the items are in bulk and really don’t need bags. no way this type of law ever comes to s fl.

Just another way to ROB the regular people.
    Enough already.

  7. EnoughAlready says...

    What a freaking dumb idea.
Always ripping off the little guy.
Let Al Gore pay the bill.

  8. Sheldon Hechtman says...

Jeff, still reading the Post. It means like me you can take the boy out of NY but you can’t take NY out of the boy. They will never let us do the 11PM news here.
P.S. I alwasy ask for paper bags and ask them to load it heavy. Who wants to schlep 10 or more bags and the paper bags recycle.

  9. Erin G. says...

Just shopped at Publix. Would of cost me $.50 for nothing.

  10. John Esposito says...

Bloomberg is a huge loser but nothing compared to all of the super losers running for the Dem’s nomination. Anyone of them gets the job and NYC goes down the tubes.
This 10 cent thing is absurd.
God bless the Republican Rick Scott.

    • HerbK says...

Bloomberg is a loser? He is worth $25 billion, how much are you worth?

  11. Darlene L says...

Was at Winn Dixie this pm. Bags alone 9 that’s 90 cents the suckers would have beat me for. The people of NYC should impeach those 8 City Council members.

  12. mark says...

I take my own bags anyway so it would not affect me. I am all for it. Remember then you had to pay 5 to 10 cents for a bottle and to get it back you had to recycle the bottle. We are just bringing back the good old days

  13. POSNER says...

    Love the blog.
This law would be a killer here in south Florida.
The elderly need a load of bags because of the weight/

  14. HerbK says...

When there was a proposal to ban smoking in the restaurants in NYC the right wing ignorati was predicting that it would destroy the industry. As soon as the ban went into effect sales started increasing and have stayed strong. That law is intended to change behavior and help protect the environment, something the post-science crowd doesn’t think is a problem. We have been using reusable bags for more than 5 years now and it works just fine for us.

  15. HelloMan says...

    hey herbk,
cant agree with you on Bloomberg or this bag thing.
just because you are loaded doesn’t make you a smart or a good guy. Bloomberg is like a little fag running around. you do recall his soda thing which the courts threw out, don’t you? he is a bully because he has bucks. many of his policies are burdensome and hurt the little guy. the city cant wait for his trm to end. by the way his bucks bought him that 3rd time which he shouldn’t have had in the first place.
on the bags. it only helps the big companies and govt. the little guy is going to eat that 10 cents. it all adds up. most people aren’t like you running around with recycle bags in their pocket. it is an impractical law which only hurts the small consumer.

  16. Shelly says...

HerbK: Do you read the NY Slimes in the AM to see how you should think? Someone doesn’t agree with you is an ignorati? Look in the mirror.

  17. zeke093 says...

    herbk
you got it so wrong that it isn’t funny.

  18. mark says...

Jeff as you seem to allow negative pejoratives for gays to be used on your blog with out any comment I wonder what other you will allow, Can we use ones for Black and Jews too? Not that I think you should censor but perhaps a comment to helloman not to use that language on your blog would be nice. Perhaps I am you only gay fan but I am sure even some of your straight readers don’t like bigotry also.

  19. JeffEats says...

    mark:

Just had a chance to read your comments.

Jeff Eats isn’t into censorship of readers…but I appreciate from where you are coming.

Take a look at the definition of FAG…for what it’s worth, HelloMan’s IP address is from the UK.

    Thanks for reading…

  20. mark says...

    From Webster fag·got noun \ˈfa-gət\
    Definition of FAGGOT
    usually disparaging
    : a male homosexual

    • ZELLMAN says...

in uk a fag is either a cigarette or a young school boy. nothing derogatory about either definition. live with it.

    • Joey D says...

Hey mark, now you want to make Jeff into a censor. don’t be so touchy. i’m sure helloman didn’t mean anything by it. I live in wilton manors so you know where i’m coming from, girl!

  21. mark says...

Zellman from Webster’s Nig$#r “member of a socially disadvantaged class of persons”
nothing derogatory there so I can use that word on Jeff’s blog now? Joey I don’t accept the use of a derogatory term for any group and I did not ask Jeff to censor I only suggested he would ask is posters not to use terms of bigotry on his page but again that’s up to him to decide what he will allow on his blog.

    • HelloMan says...

mark, sorry if I offended you. in London the word fag doesn’t have the same negative connotation that it obviously does here in the states. meant nothing by it.

  22. mark says...

Its ok Helloman i did not know you were in the UK. And yes words mean different things in other countries.

  23. COOPERMAN says...

Now that everybody has kissed and made up, I say that this 10 cents a bag deal is absurd. It will only the hurt the every day folk of NYC. In s Florida it would be a killer to the retired folks.

    • gary says...

“Killer to the retired folks” that’s funny…my father and his wife use to wash out paper cups and put them back in their cabinet. They would also wash plastic cutlery, plates and cups in their dishwasher. My father in law would save EVERY container from any food item he ever bought to use again and again.
Soda? “no thanks, just ice water with 3 lemon’s and 4 sweet & low.
Did you know that a Publix bag makes for a great rain bonnet, also a garbage bag or an overnight case.
      One other comment….
“it will only hurt the everyday folk”
      How about the Supermarket??

If the store charges for a bag, they make money on every bag you buy, I’ll give you that.

If the customer brings their own bag, the store reduces their paper expense and can ultimately pass this savings on to the consumer.
      however……
Do you really think that a supermarket wants to discourage you from Parading up and down the streets of Manhattan with their name prominently displayed on an eye catching bag over a couple of cents.

If anyone has conflict with what I am saying please don’t call me names, I am very sensitive……….

  24. Sid L. Turner says...

jeff, a 10 cents charge per bag is absurd. it would really hurt the elderly in s. fl. besides i’m a cheap bastard so why would I want to spend money that I didn’t have to before!
