***** DISH OF THE WEEK (Sunday- 3/1/15).

One of Jeff Eats’ favorite menu items…

CHICKEN EMPANADA
$2.25

Pizza Chef Italian Bistro
23269 State Road 7
Boca Raton

Latest Review: 4/25/14

I know! Pizza Chef Italian Bistro- EMPANADA…the owner is originally from Argentina! Mystery solved.

Long story short, this joint makes delicious empanadas…4-kinds…meat, chicken, spinach, ham & cheese- they’re all dynamite. Like I said up-top $2.25 a pop, but if you buy them like Jeff Eats does-12 (that’s a dozen) at a time, they run a buck & half a piece! Betcha didn’t know that being a mathematician was a prerequisite of being a food-blogger!-that’s why there are so few of us.

This Pizza Chef Italian Bistro joint is an absolute hole-in-the-wall…I’m thinking maybe on a good day it seats 30…

In addition to those empanadas- its- got… the full-boat mom & pop red sauce Italian joint menu and I am telling you that- Pizza Chef’s food is really good.

For what it’s worth, since I first found the joint- I have recommended it to a ton of people and not one single person-yelled at me for making a bad-call here!

Printed down below is Jeff Eats’ 4/25/14 review- for a bit more color…

You know…being in the restaurant business is an absolute bitch…

Jeff Eats’ mantra–“You want to eat in restaurants, you don’t want to own them. You want to eat in restaurants, you don’t want to own them. You want to eat…

To make a long story short, way back on September 8, 2008 I told you guys about Tony’s Authentic Brooklyn Pizza- a terrific “hole in the wall” mom & pop- red sauce Italian joint in Boca Raton. To make a long story short, Tony’s and the “pizza guy” (don’t recall the joint’s name) who came after him–are no more. Jeff Eats has absolutely no idea as to why Tony’s didn’t work…what I do know is- that Tony’s made real good pizza and other stuff.

Anyway,

About a year ago, Pizza Chef Italian Bistro opened where Tony’s use to be. Based on a recent Jeff Eats’ outing, décor-wise nothing changed–the joint seats 30. The one kitchen change, the Pizza Chef Italian Bistro installed a char-gas grill.

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats recently tried Pizza Chef Italian Bistro and I gotta tell you that this restaurant is GOLD! Now, not trying to sound melodramatic or nothing, but it’s joints like Pizza Chef Italian Bistro that make being- Jeff Eats fun!

As expected, Pizza Chef’s menu has the full boat of Italian pizzas, pastas, subs, entrees–but now for the kicker, it also has a ton of Argentinian dishes…Not sure on this, but Jeff Eats’ money says the owners are “of” Latin/Spanish heritage and not Italian–but that’s just a guess.

Anyway,

The recent eating- outing that I mentioned above- “netted” Jeff Eats, Mrs. Jeff Eats and another couple…cheese pizza, penne ala vodka, veal parmigiana, chicken marsala, zeppoles and I’m telling you–the stuff was delicious. For those of you wondering, Pizza Chef Italian Bistro has soup/salad-entrée-pasta side “specials” galore and neighborhood pizza joint prices. Oh! before I forget, we also had meat and cheese empanadas that were off the chart and a char-grilled sausage sub that I’m sorry I shared with my friend Norman

Pizza Chef Italian Bistro is a winner. I am telling you, go there! You’ll thank Jeff Eats for the heads-up!

Just so you know, your tee shirt/shorts- ensemble is the dress of the day.

Pizza Chef Italian Bistro is open Tuesday-Thursday 11am-9pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm, Sunday noon-9pm, closed on Monday.

The Pompano Beach Amp is proud to announce their first concert of 2017. Eddie Money and Starship featuring Mickey Thomas will kick off the New Year with a rockin’ double headliner show. The concert will have fans singing all night long as both Eddie and Mickey crank out decades of hits.

Eddie Money burst onto the scene with his double-platinum album on Columbia Records in 1977 spawning the two hits “Baby Hold On” and “Two Tickets to Paradise.” Legendary rock impresario Bill Graham raved, “Eddie has it all…not only can he sing, write, and play; he’s a natural performer.”

Over the course of his storied career, Money sold over 28 million records and amassed over 20 hits with overwhelming success at both Pop and Rock radio including “Shakin’,” “I Think I’m in Love,” “I Wanna Go Back,” “We Should Be Sleeping,” “Walk On Water,” “I’ll Get By,” and his legendary hit with Ronnie Spector, “Take Me Home Tonight”. Money’s songs have appeared in dozens of movies including, television shows and hit video games including “Mall Cop”, the infamous Geico commercial, “Grand Theft Auto”, and “Guitar Hero”.

Mickey Thomas is the owner of the soaring voice that propelled Starship through the decades of the 80’s and 90’s. With his soulful and compelling vocals, Mickey has established himself as one of rock music’s most recognizable stars. Mickey made his mark in 1976 as lead vocalist on the mega-hit “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” with The Elvin Bishop Band.

In 1979, Mickey’s joined Jefferson Starship and his powerful vocals brought a new wave of success. The group was renamed Starship and had an amazing string of hits including “No Way Out,” “We Built This City,” “Sara,” and an Oscar nomination for the #1 hit “Nothing Gonna Stop Us Now,” from the movie Mannequin. Other top hits included “Find Your Way Back,” “Stranger,” “Laying It On the Line” and “It’s Not Over Till It’s Over” which became Major League Baseball’s theme in 1987. Moreover, every Starship album released since 1979 has gone Gold, Platinum, or Multi-Platinum. Mickey’s stellar voice and video charisma on Starship’s video classics have become staples on MTV and VH1. Material covered in Starship’s live performance ranges from Mickey’s tenure with The Elvin Bishop Band and Starship, as well as songs from his two solo albums.

***** John The Baker, 2116 North Flamingo Road, Pembroke Pines, Florida 33028, (954) 252-0091.

Got a good story to tell you guys…

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have been eating- at John The Baker since 1996, but amazingly, Jeff Eats has never mentioned the joint to you! Why? I don’t know!

Anyway,

John The Baker is the consummate mom & pop red sauce Italian joint! If red sauce is “involved” John The Baker- got it!

Like I just said, the consummate mom & pop red sauce Italian joint- which incidentally makes absolutely delicious reasonably priced pizzas, pastas, subs, salads, meat/chicken entrees, other Italian stuff and totally off the chart amazing garlic rolls!

image

Jeff Eats has never actually counted the number of John The Baker dinners that Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have done – but I’m gonna take a shot and guess at least 47 with last night’s being the latest!

image

Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats love this joint and I apologize for not having mentioned it sooner!

You can check menu/prices/info at johnthebaker.net.

John The Baker is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-10pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-11pm.

And, just in case the combination of the candidates/and Jeff Eats’ new My Pillow doesn’t have me in Rem Dreamland- for a nosh…2 portions of Scruby’s BBQ’s-Deluxe Potato Skins (crispy skins with cheese, bacon, sour cream, loaded with pulled pork- $7.99 each).

Posted on November 18th, 2010
***** Scruby’s BBQ, 8990 West State Road 84, Davie, Florida 33324, (954) 370-2774.

Scruby’s is a… really good-casual-reasonably priced “bbq chain”…there are currently- 3 locations, Davie, Pembroke Pines and Tamarac, Florida. You can check menu/prices/locations at www.scrubys.com. This writeup “concerns” the Davie joint. Based on the website, we are going to assume that all 3 restaurants have the same menu/prices and faux-old cowboy western decor. Just for the record, over the years, I must have driven by the Tamarac joint 22,000 times and never stopped.

Anyway…last week, I finally got around to trying Scruby’s Davie store. Based on an “outing” of a full rack of babybacks ($14.99), sliced bbq pork sandwich ($5.19), fried corn nuggets ($4.99), brunswick stew ($3.99)–I should have stopped years ago. Simply put — some of the best bbq that I’ve had in a very long time. The stuff is “first” lightly smoked and then grilled with a delicious sweet sauce…As you may or may not know, I am NOT a fan of heavily smoked bbq. Scruby’s smokes, but then grills in a dynamite sweet sauce. Best way to describe the bbq stuff, “real good” Tony Roma’s and Bobby Rubino’s.

Scruby’s menu has all kinds of “specials” and “deals”…super pleasant service, big portions, and delicious food. Absolutely nothing to complain about!

Scruby’s is open Monday-Thursday 11am-9:30pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-10pm, Sunday 5:30pm-9pm
