Got something off the chart good- for you guys…Poppa’s BBQ in Clearwater.

Real simple concept going on here…order at/pickup at the counter-smoked bbq joint- something like a dozen 4-top tables inside, handful of benches outside.

If you’re looking for “frills”…wrong joint!

A recent lunch outing had Jeff Eats “trying”- 1/2 rack of Memphis style dry rubbed baby back ribs ($10.49), pulled pork sandwich (comes with 2-sides and a drink- $5.99), chicken plate (smoked chicken breast, 2 sides, bun-$6.29) and I gotta tell you, everything blew me away. The food was absolute dynamite.

Just so we are straight with each other, Poppa’s menu is kinda “limited” but I’m thinking that there is enough stuff on it- so nobody in your party is gonna starve or nothing!

Let me wrap this up for you, Poppa’s BBQ is an absolute homerun…

Just between you guys and Jeff Eats, some things in life just can’t be explained. Like- Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats having never “tried” New York Style Pizza & Restaurant until last night, despite 1. the joint having been around since 1979, 2. since 1991 we’d heard nothing but terrific things about its food and 3. it’s only- 20 minutes from our Boca Raton home!

Long story short, last night (I know I already told you that) Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats ate dinner at red sauce- mom & pop – New York Style Pizza & Restaurant and the joint blew us away! Delicious food, big portions, super pleasant service, very reasonable prices!

Trust Jeff Eats on this baby, this joint is an absolute home run!

Real simple tale to tell- yesterday morning, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats “re-discovered” The Donut Shoppe which we last visited in late December, 2017. For you “historians” out there- the joint has been in business for something-like 59 years and I gotta tell you that its cake and yeast raised donuts absolutely kill! Order/pickup at counter, handful of tables and coffee to wash the donuts down with. Open 7 days a week, 5am-1pm.

Trust Jeff Eats on this- it doesn’t take a NYC cop to know that The Donut Shoppe’s donuts are off the chart delicious!

Trust Jeff Eats on this one…I know my donuts–I seriously doubt that there is anyone in America who knows donuts better than I do–except maybe for some current/and retired members of the New York City Police Department.

With the above in mind, Jeff Eats would match Jacksonville’s–The Donut Shoppe’s donuts against any player in America. Now nothing for nothing-as I just recently found this joint, but I understand, that for the past 52 years it has been cranking out donuts Tuesday-Sunday 5am-1pm (closed on Monday) to a constant line of customers (I know that sounds a bit over dramatic)–by the way, don’t tell the IRS (look at today’s date) but The Donut Shoppe is a cash-only joint.

Not going to bore you -telling you about the mixed dozen I “had”…suffice it to say, after eating these donuts you’ll know that Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme (to a lesser extent) got you hooked on-shall we say -g a r b a g e…there I said it!

One final thought, just so we are straight with each other, garbage is ok-unless real-good stuff is available nearby. You know, “any port in a storm.”

While I’m on Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme, Dunkin’s donuts are made in a central commissary and then delivered to its stores- Krispy Kreme is now building a “small foot print” store which follows the Dunkin’ commissary model. Obviously- the economics of baking in house, doesn’t work for these huge chains. Finally, I don’t know about you, but I find Dunkin’s donuts to have an oily after-taste and Krispy’s glazed donuts don’t taste so-hot (pun intended) when they aren’t straight out of the oven.

The Donut Shoppe is a great joint to know about. The only problem that Jeff Eats got with the joint–it’s only open until 1pm and a drive from Boca Raton every morning would be a bit nerve racking.

Got a real good diner for you guys to checkout- Long Island Cafe in Sunrise.

Real simple tale to tell- no frills decor, booth/table seating, reasonably priced breakfast/lunch menu loaded with all kinds of breakfast stuff/ sandwiches/ salads/ hot entrees/ burgers/ desserts, open every day of the week 7am-3pm except closed on Wednesday (you got me!).

Yesterday, Jeff Eats and two (formerly from Brooklyn) business associates “did” breakfast and I gotta tell you- the joint’s food was dynamite! I kinda think I know my “mom & pop” diners and I’m telling you guys- the Long Island Cafe definitely -got someone in the back of the house who knows how to cook!

If you’re a fan of “mom & pop” diners- the bet here is that you-will absolutely love Long Island Cafe!

Since that date, Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats have been real steady Josie’s customers! The primary reasons…real good food, real reasonable prices, full liquor bar, indoor/outdoor patio seating and not one single drop of drama going on!

Lunch, bar and dinner menu revamped with new items

BOYNTON BEACH, FL, May 9, 2016 – Josie’s Ristorante, a family owned and operated traditional Italian restaurant, is offering 25% off the entire menu during the summer months starting now through September. This special applies to dine in only, not valid with other offers, discounts or small plates at the bar.

Josie’s Ristorante, established in 1992 and located on the corner of South Federal Highway and Woolbright, features pasta, gourmet pizza, fish, steak and Osso Bucco. Josie’s is open Monday-Saturday starting at 11 a.m. with a lunch menu including a fine selection of paninis, salads and gourmet pizza. The restaurant opens on Sundays at 4 p.m.

The restaurant has revamped its lunch, bar and dinner menus with new menu items including San Francisco Cioppino (clams, lobster, scallops, calamari in a spicy lobster saffron broth over linguini: MKT), Prime Short Rib Meatball (antipasti menu: $14), Spanish Octopus (wood grilled octopus, fingerling potatoes roasted onions, tomatoes, capers, evoo, Antipasti menu, $14), and Fresh Burrata (red & gold beets, Barolo poached pears, arugula, herb balsamic dressing, toasted crostini, antipasti menu, $12).

Josie’s signature dishes include Eggplant Stefania (grilled eggplant, stuffed with angel hair, garlic & oil, marinara, mozzarella, $22), chicken or veal prepared Marsala, Pizziola, Piccata or Francese (chicken $19, veal $26), and Veal Bersaglieri (scaloppini, garlic, marinated artichokes, olives, capers, roasted bell peppers, white wine and lemon sauce, spaghetti pomodoro).

Happy hour is served at the bar and on the patio daily from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and after 9 p.m. with special prices on beer ($2 draft, $3 bottle), wine ($4.50 house by the glass and bottles from $26 to $28), specialty cocktails ($6) and specialty martinis ($7). The happy hour bar menu includes truffle fries ($5) , bruschetta ($6) , fresh mozzarella caprese ($7), calamari fritti ($7), and eggplant napoleon ($7).

The dinner menu includes a variety of antipasti, salads, pastas, fish, Panini, and specialties including stuffed dolphin, rack of lamb, Red Childe Grilled Hatfield Natural Pork Chop, simple grilled salmon, and Tortellini di Bologna. Josie’s offers a full bar with an extensive wine and cocktail list.

Josie’s Ristorante is Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 4 to 10 p.m. and offers delivery, take out and catering. Josie’s Ristorante is a “mom and pop” Southern Italian Red Sauce Joint. You know the drill, soup or salad, garlic rolls, entree and a side of pasta…pizzas, subs, calzones and strombolis. Prices are neighborhood pizzeria prices…Veal parmigiana $17.99 etc.

Over the years, I have eaten at Josie’s something like 10 times…the food is real good. I especially like Josie’s interior/atmosphere, it looks like an old bar circa 1960 with dark wood tables and booths and bar area. There is also an out-door dining patio. This is a real easy going joint, so tee shirts/shorts are a pretty common site here.

Last night I ate dinner at Josie’s. I “sampled” the veal parmigiana, veal marsala, and zuppa di pesce…everything was right on the money!

If you live in Josie’s neighborhood, this is a good joint to know about…
