* MARDI GRAS CASINO DOES 60’s *
Most of you guys know that Jeff Eats is a huge fan of 1950s-1960s Rock N Roll.
During the past 20 or so years that I’ve been down here in South Florida, I have seen a huge number of 50s-60s recording acts and oldies tribute/cover bands. The list of recording acts is virtually “endless” with The Turtles, The Zombies, The Crystals, The Duprees, The Contours, Joey Dee & The Starliters, The Shirelles, The Beach Boys, The Drifters, The Critters, being on it—and for sure, Jeff Eats has never met a 50s-60s band/act that he didn’t like. Some are better than others—but give or take a very rare one, they all get the job done. While I’m on the subject of “top notch” South Florida 50s-60s cover bands Whitestone–Viva Classic Rock N Roll Band–The Shindigs–The Fabulons–Orange Sunshine–Rocky & The Rollers immediately come to mind. On top notch South Florida 50s & 60s “track” groups, Joey Dale & Gigolos, Brylcream, Sha-Boom, Lola & The Saints and Amanda & the Earth Angels are 5 of the best.
Now to the point…
Jeff Eats wants to give you guys who like this kind of stuff–a heads up!
From what I understand, the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach is “now” setting its sights on the “60’s rock n roll crowd”—last Tuesday night, the Mardi Gras had- The Lovin’ Spoonful and earlier today-announced a 2013 concert calendar that includes–The Grass Roots, Jay & The Americans, The Manhattans, The Association, The Atlanta Rhythm Section and The Marshall Tucker Band.
The next scheduled concert is Tuesday Night, June 18th at 8pm—The legendary group The Grass Roots will be performing…and for what it’s worth—Jeff Eats has seen the current Grass Roots’ lineup twice in concert and I am telling you that they are absolutely amazing–right up there with the best “60’s” acts working in America today. The group- which had such hits as “Midnight Confessions” and “Where Were You When I Need You” has sold millions of records and in their hey-day, was on the Billboard charts for something like 307 consecutive weeks—Tickets go on sale May 24, 2013.
You can check www.mardigrascasinofl.com for concert schedule/to buy tickets. Mardi Gras Casino’s phone number: (954) 924-3000.
I saw The Grass Roots a few years ago as part of The Happy Together tour. The band stole the show. Gary Puckett and The Turtles couldn’t come even close. If you haven’t seen The Grass Roots make it your business to get to the Mardi Gras for this show. You won’t be sorry.

No pricing yet.
I would bet tkts will be priced $10 $15 $25 just like they were for The Spoonful.
Jeff, The Grass Roots are a tremendous band. I saw them on Long Island last year and they blew the crowd away…1234 Sha La La La…
They are a must see.
Rob Z
The Grass Roots are one of the greatest 60s-early 70s bands.
They had a huge number of hits.
Jeff, if The Mardis Gras Casino is going to have all kinds of oldies bands I will definitely start to gamble there. I usually play in Coconut Creek or The HR but they get a lot of money for tkts. For example The Rascals are close to 100 bucks next week at HR. I have been offered free tkts but you have to be there 3pm the day of the show to pick them up. A real pain in the ass.
The Mardi Gras doing tkts at 10, 15, 25 makes it a no brainer for me.
I love oldies music and The Grass Roots were one heck of a band.
I am definitely going to come to see them and I will definitely catch Jay & the Americans and The Association.
I think that HR and Coconut Creek problem is that they dont really have venues where they can do concerts for basically free.
I’ll be hitting the Mardi Gras on nights that they have these great bands.
the association sang
cherish
thats my favorite song of all time.
My favorite song is also by The Association.
“NEVER MY LOVE”
One of the best 60’s bands with great harmonies.
The Grass Roots are one of my all time favorites.
Definitely going to catch them at Mardi Gras.
Jeff,
Last week my wife and I saw The Lovin’ Spoonful at the Mardi Gras. It was a terrific concert and we had a great time. Caught a quick bite in its fast food cafĂ© and then dropped a few bucks into the slots after the show before heading home to Delray Beach.
Although we have been in delray Beach for over 10 years we had never been to the Mardi Gras. We have been to Coconut Creek, Hard Rock and Isles a Number of times but the Mardi Gras had never been onour radar. By the way we had been to Gulfstream a few times but it wasn’t one of our favorite places.
Your mention of The Lovin’s Spoonful caught our attention so we gave Mardi Gras a try.
We had a lot of fun and loved the outdoor setup for this concert.
Both I and my wife are in our mid 60s and we love old rock n roll. The Lovin’ Spoonful was right up our alley.
We are going to see The Grass Roots and we also plan on seeing The Association.
We think that the Mardi Gras may have hot on a successful formula that being having oldies concerts. They will definitely draw the baby boomer crowd.
If these concerts were on the weekend they would get even bigger crowds.
Thanks for the telling us about The Spoonful and we’ll keep a close eye on Mardi Gras’ website for upcoming concerts.
Thanks,
The Grossmans

Just had a chance to read your comments.
Glad that you had a great time.
Jeff Eats and Mrs. Jeff Eats were also there and we had a blast.
Just so you know, we have seen The Grass Roots a number of times. Their lead singer Mark Dawson is a personal friend. All I can tell you, is- don’t miss them, they are fabulous.
Thanks for reading…
Jeff,
Not to be a pain in the neck, but we forget to mention the Meet & Greet with The Lovin’ Spoonful. Four lovely guys and it was really special meeting Boone and Butler to of the originals up close and personal.
Saw The Grass Roots last year when they were part of The Happy Together Tour. They were terrific. The group has a ton of hits and they are very engaging on the stage. If you haven’t seen them don’t miss them.
I saw The Lovin’ Spoonful last week.
The group started out very slow and was a drop on the boring side. I would say mid way through their show they really got going and by the end of the concert had the crowd excited. The meet & greet that followed was very nicely done. The seating was all good.
The Mardi Gras did a very nice job on staging this concert.
Like you I saw The Association a few years ago in Deerfield Beach. At that time the original lead singer YESTER wasn’t with them and the group was AWFUL. From what Ive heard Yester is back with leading the group and they are sounding like they did back in the 60s. If they don’t have Yester forget about this group because the show I saw was pitiful. If they have Yester give them a go.

Like you, Jeff Eats saw The Association in Deerfield Beach 7/4/09. Suffice it to say, they weren’t very good..and as you point out, lead singer Yester was not with them at that time.
Jeff Eats just checked The Association’s website and Yester is listed as being a member of the current group. I also spoke to a local booking agent and he confirmed that Yester is back with the group and that they are sounding better than ever.
Thanks for reading…
Jeff, saw The Association at The Broward Center last year and they were terrific. Yester was with them and they sounded just like their records.
In 2010 Mark Dawson who is The Grass Roots’ lead singer also sang with a band named American Pop 60’s. I saw American in 11/2010 and the band featured a whole segment of Grass Roots’ hits with Dawson on lead. The crowd couldn’t believe how good the band was. Dawson is a great lead singer and he is the spark for the current Grass Roots and back them for American. I haven’t seen Dawson up front with the Grass Roots but if his American lead is what you get with The Grass Roots you will get quite a show. A few years ago before he passed I saw original Rob Grill on lead. he was great in his prime but towards the end of his career he wasn’t really getting the job done vocally.
I am looking forward to seeing The Grass Roots at the casino. The band had huge hits and they were real rockers that can really get a crowd out of their seats, onto their feet.
The Manhattans are going to be there on New Years’ Eve, do you have any details on that?
I love their song ‘Kiss & Say Goodbye.’
Thanks,
Hey Everyone,
Jay & The Americans is also on the schedule for Oct.
I know Jay Black isn’t in this group but the new lead is pretty good.
I saw them at FAU.
By the way FAU is having Jay & The Americans on July 4, 2013.
Much cheaper to see them at Mardi Gras.
i saw jay & the americans with the new lead singer jay reinke a few months ago and they are ok, but not as good as when jay black was the lead singer. the new jay tries very hard to copy jay black’s sound but doesn’t quite get there, as far i’m concerned.
If The MARDI GRAS MANAGEMENT IS READING THIS:
CHEAPER???????????????????????That’s an understatement.
Mardi Gras $10-$15-$25 tickets are a steal. All the seats are great. They always throw you a few bucks on a player’s card and a buffet deal with a ticket.
I wish they would have more of these concerts.
I also would like to see concerts on the weekends when I could spend more time at the casino before and after the show. During the week isn’t the best timing for us working folks.
There were 3 Jays in Jay & the Americans.
First there was John Traynor who had the big hit She Cried. Then there was David Blatt who took the name Jay Black who had all of the other hits. Finally the third man in is John Reinke who is from Chicago.
I saw the latest version of Jay & The Americans and they are decent. They don’t come close to the days when Jay Black was a young vocalist. Jay Black still entertains with his own group. They are good but Jay Black isn’t what he use to be. He’s something like 73 years old and voice can’t quite there anymore.
In any event whether its Jay Black or Jay & The Americans they are both fun and enjoyable to see.
By the way Jay Traynor now performs with The Tokens.
Jeff,
A group of us went to The Lovin’ Spoonful show last Tuesday night. We had an absolute blast.
First, our tickets were 10 bucks and the seats were great.
Second, we got players cards which had 15 bucks of free play.
Third, The Spoonful put on a great show.
Four, The Spoonful did a fun meet & greet after the show.
Five, For $10.95 a head 6 of us had a terrific Italian buffet at the casino.
Six, I won a tee shirt from Majic Radio 101.2.
Seven,, We didn’t lose too much in the slots,
Eight, We were home in Delray Beach by 10:30pm.
Looking forward to doing it all over again with The Grass Roots.
Like you I love the oldies.
Recently saw The Grass Roots, Jay & The Americans, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Drifter, The Turtles, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap..
The Grass Roots put on a great show.
Same for The Drifters.
The others were okay but not great.
I did see the Association a few years ago. They were fair. From what I understand they now are sounding much better because they have original lead singer Jerry Yester back with them.
Can’t wait to see The Grass Roots, Jay & The Americans and The Association.
For us baby boomers these were three of the biggest groups when we were in our teens and early 20s.
They had songs like Midnight Confessions, She Cried, Never My Love.
Jeff:
I am definitely going to see The Grass Roots.
I see that tickets go on sale on May 24th.
The website doesn’t say how much the tickets cost.
Do you have any idea on how much tickets will be?
Thank you,
Anne Y.

Just had a chance to read your comments.
I am not 100% sure on ticket prices.
If memory serves me correctly, The Lovin’ Spoonful tickets were priced $10, $15, $25.
As you may know, Jeff Eats was at The Lovin’ Spoonful concert. From what I saw, every seat in the “venue” was terrific.
One final thought, if you don’t already have one—you might want to consider picking up a Mardi Gras Casino Krewe Club Card. The card is free and I think that for just signing up that give you “X” dollars in free play and offers of discounted/complimentary meals, tickets etc. Can’t go wrong getting it as it’s FREE.
As I’ve mentioned in other posts, Jeff Eats has seen The Grass Roots. They are terrific and put on quite a show.
Enjoy the show!!!
Thanks for reading…
I really enjoyed The Lovin’ Spoonful. Great band and the weather was spectacular. Since this show is basically outdoors, I’m going to wait to the day of the show and see how the weather is. If it’s good, I’ll buy a ticket at the gate.
The track/grandstand where the show is held is a great place for a concert. Sound was great and as Jeff mentioned every seat has a perfect view of the stage.
