P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, 1400 Glades Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33431, (561) 393-3722.

Just got home from eating at P.F. Chang’s China Bistro in Boca Raton. I know-I know-I know, “everyone” loves this Chinese joint. To be perfectly honest with you, my family raves about P.F. Chang’s food….same goes for tons of my friends.

Call me the exception to the rule, but personally, I wouldn’t give you 5 cents for P.F. Chang’s food.

This evening I “sampled” egg drop soup, wonton soup, hot & sour soup, spare ribs, egg rolls, pan fried dumplings, mongolian beef, honey chicken, chicken with cashews, shrimp with lobster sauce—now, no fooling here, I thought that each and every dish was lousy. If you took this stuff–out of its fancy surroundings and served it at a “mom & pop” joint…the bet here, is that the mom & pop wouldn’t last very long. By the way, the mom & pop would probably charge 50% less for the same dishes.

Like I said before, this chain’s got a tremendous reputation… and tonight’s 30 minute 8pm wait tells me that tons of people love “it.”

I maybe crazy…but like I said before, I wouldn’t give you 5 cents for the food.

The way I see it, P.F. Chang’s is “chain food”…I checked the Boca location and the staff does have 2 Chinese employees…one works the kitchen, the other as a server. Now I’m not saying that you have to be Chinese to make good Chinese food…what I am saying is that P.F. Chang’s is “formula” food…anybody can make its food. The wontons were in a chicken broth and were as flimsy as a Kleenex. The spare ribs were covered in a sauce that was so–“something” that half-of them went “un”eaten. The cashew chicken wasn’t even as good as the Mall stuff you get for $4.99. Trust me, your favorite Chinese restaurant does every dish listed above better…and I say this, even though I probably haven’t been to your favorite.

You can check menu/prices at www.pfchangs.com.

P.F. Chang’s is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

What is there to like about PF Chang’s?

As you may already know, PF Chang’s is a popular chain restaurant with multiple locations. This is a place, where Asian food gets dressed up in a casual dining atmosphere for about double the price from a street vendor in Chinatown. But in Chinatown, the food is pretty damn tasty. Fulfilling and you don’t leave hungry or angry. Angry? Why do I say angry? If there is one thing that upsets me the most in a dining experience it is the lack of customer service and the aftermath. Let me explain.

We were seated at a table of four. Our waitress came only 5 minutes after settling in and asked if we were ready to order. I was flabbergasted. The host knew we had just received our menu. Obviously, there was a lack of communication between the two. 10 minutes later, our waitress came back and asked if we were ready to order again. No, we were not ready. Especially me! At that point, I requested to take our drink orders first and to bring us water.

It took 20 minutes for the drinks to arrive, which by the way, should have been virgin drinks. Boring! We decided on two apps and two entrees. Let’s begin with the chicken lettuce wraps. The presentation left me unimpressed and the flavor, What Flavor?? The degree of spices and tenderness and texture was completely out of range. How can anyone enjoy this appetizer? Unfortunately, I do not have a picture to show you, but just imagine cat food (out of a can) with a side of iceberg lettuce on a fancy white plate. Yea, it was bad. What was worse was the Crispy Green Beans. Either the batter was old or the green beans were rotten or the frying oil was really Castrol oil. We just couldn’t figure it out. After finishing nearly half of the dish we decided to give up.

Next, the Korean BBQ Chicken Stir Fry. This spicy chicken stir fry came with red peppers, green beans, onions and chili sauce served with vegetables and a bowl of brown rice. Sounds good, right? Here’s the problem, it wasn’t. The veggies were not fresh, the chicken was overcooked, and the sauce didn’t exist. The brown rice should’ve been listed as BLAND rice. We are both expecting this dish to be the highlight of the night.

After patiently waiting for our glasses to be refilled with water (for the 2nd time) by our waitress, out of frustration, I decided to catch another waiter’s attention. Luckily, he was kind enough to fill our glasses. Shortly after, my hot date caught my attention as he started to caress against me. Weird, is what I thought. Abruptly, he left my side and ran to the restroom, came back and informed me he was fine. But was he really? I began to observe him for the rest of the night.

Finally, the Hong Kong Style Sea bass arrived but in an unfamiliar matter. The food runner reached across, placed the dish incorrectly and didn’t realize his presentation of placing plates was not up to restaurant standards. There are basic rules of serving food. This gentleman didn’t know any of them. Cleary, I was disappointed. As far the dish goes, this is a steamed seafood dish which was light and mild with grape tomatoes, Asian mushrooms and greens. For being the most expensive item on the menu, I found it to be mediocre.

The dining experience was coming to an end. My date informs me, he just felt a terrible wave of nausea and blamed the food. At first, I didn’t believe it. We went on with our night. Just under two hours after leaving PF Chang’s , we were driving back home like we were in Grand Theft Auto video game! Better yet, my date quickly turned his car into some sort of vomit nightmare scene from The Exorcist. Awful.

Please avoid this location and if at all possible, avoid P.F. Chang’s overall.
Unless you think puking is fun.

    Jeff,
I live in Boca Raton. I’ve eaten in the PF 3x. The food sucks same for the service. The prices are double what they should be assuming the food was decent which it’s not.
If I win I’m going to give the Gift Card to my mother in law.

  3. Bill says...

    Omg love this joint. Thanks!!

  4. Murray Strauss says...

OK … I’d like to win. My family and I would enjoy the trip to PF Chang’s.

Let me just say that it’s different from EVERY place I’ve eaten Chinese food. Not bad / not good just different.

I suggest that going in realizing it is not same as the corner or or strip mall place will make the experience OK.

    Anyway take care.

  25. SidRidesABike says...

Not one of my favorite chains. Food is on the sketchy side and the prices way too high based on local Chinese joints’ prices.

I do like pei Wei which is their fast food restaurant.

Can’t figure the disconnect between the 2 chains, but both seem to be doing very strong business.
